In the contemporary security landscape, the incorporation of photonics has emerged as a transformative force, unlocking a spectrum of possibilities to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of security primitives. This integration represents more than a mere technological augmentation; it signifies a paradigm shift towards innovative approaches capable of delivering security primitives with key properties for low-power systems. This not only augments the robustness of security frameworks, but also paves the way for novel strategies that adapt to the evolving challenges of the digital age. This paper discusses the security layers and related services that will be developed, modeled, and evaluated within the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project. These layers will exploit novel implementations for security primitives based on physical unclonable functions (PUFs) using integrated photonics technology. This manuscript details and extends the SIMBa toolbox (System Identification Methods leveraging Backpropagation) presented in previous work, which uses well-established Machine Learning tools for discrete-time linear multi-step-ahead state-space System Identification (SI). SIMBa leverages linear-matrix-inequality-based free parametrizations of Schur matrices to guarantee the stability of the identified model by design. In this paper, backed up by novel free parametrizations of Schur matrices, we extend the toolbox to show how SIMBa can incorporate known sparsity patterns or true values of the state-space matrices to identify without jeopardizing stability. We extensively investigate SIMBa's behavior when identifying diverse systems with various properties from both simulated and real-world data. Overall, we find it consistently outperforms traditional stable subspace identification methods, and sometimes significantly, especially when enforcing desired model properties. These results hint at the potential of SIMBa to pave the way for generic structured nonlinear SI. Machine Learning (ML) and linear System Identification (SI) have been historically developed independently. In this paper, we leverage well-established ML tools - especially the automatic differentiation framework - to introduce SIMBa, a family of discrete linear multi-step-ahead state-space SI methods using backpropagation. SIMBa relies on a novel Linear-Matrix-Inequality-based free parametrization of Schur matrices to ensure the stability of the identified model. We show how SIMBa generally outperforms traditional linear state-space SI methods, and sometimes significantly, although at the price of a higher computational burden. This performance gap is particularly remarkable compared to other SI methods with stability guarantees, where the gain is frequently above 25% in our investigations, hinting at SIMBa's ability to simultaneously achieve state-of-the-art fitting performance and enforce stability. Interestingly, these observations hold for a wide variety of input-output systems and on both simulated and real-world data, showcasing the flexibility of the proposed approach. We study the problem of tuning the parameters of a room temperature controller to minimize its energy consumption, subject to the constraint that the daily cumulative thermal discomfort of the occupants is below a given threshold. We formulate it as an online constrained black-box optimization problem where, on each day, we observe some relevant environmental context and adaptively select the controller parameters. In this paper, we propose to use a data-driven Primal-Dual Contextual Bayesian Optimization (PDCBO) approach to solve this problem. In a simulation case study on a single room, we apply our algorithm to tune the parameters of a Proportional Integral (PI) heating controller and the pre-heating time. Our results show that PDCBO can save up to 4.7% energy consumption compared to other state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization-based methods while keeping the daily thermal discomfort below the given tolerable threshold on average. Additionally, PDCBO can automatically track time-varying tolerable thresholds while existing methods fail to do so. We then study an alternative constrained tuning problem where we aim to minimize the thermal discomfort with a given energy budget. With this formulation, PDCBO reduces the average discomfort by up to 63% compared to state-of-the-art safe optimization methods while keeping the average daily energy consumption below the required threshold.

Due to the complex specifications of current electronic systems, design decisions need to be explored automatically. However, the exploration process is a complex task given the plethora of design choices such as the selection of components, number of components, operating modes of each of the components, connections between the components and variety of ways in which the same functionality can be implemented. To tackle these issues, scripts are used generate designs based on high abstract constructions. Still, this approach is usually ad-hoc and platform dependent, making the whole procedure hardly reusable, scalable and versatile. This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. The wealth of text data generated by social media has enabled new kinds of analysis of emotions with language models. These models are often trained on small and costly datasets of text annotations produced by readers who guess the emotions expressed by others in social media posts. This affects the quality of emotion identification methods due to training data size limitations and noise in the production of labels used in model development. We present LEIA, a model for emotion identification in text that has been trained on a dataset of more than 6 million posts with self-annotated emotion labels for happiness, affection, sadness, anger, and fear. LEIA is based on a word masking method that enhances the learning of emotion words during model pre-training. LEIA achieves macro-F1 values of approximately 73 on three in-domain test datasets, outperforming other supervised and unsupervised methods in a strong benchmark that shows that LEIA generalizes across posts, users, and time periods. We further perform an out-of-domain evaluation on five different datasets of social media and other sources, showing LEIA's robust performance across media, data collection methods, and annotation schemes. Our results show that LEIA generalizes its classification of anger, happiness, and sadness beyond the domain it was trained on. LEIA can be applied in future research to provide better identification of emotions in text from the perspective of the writer. With more and more data being collected, data-driven modeling methods have been gaining in popularity in recent years. While physically sound, classical gray-box models are often cumbersome to identify and scale, and their accuracy might be hindered by their limited expressiveness. On the other hand, classical black-box methods, typically relying on Neural Networks (NNs) nowadays, often achieve impressive performance, even at scale, by deriving statistical patterns from data. However, they remain completely oblivious to the underlying physical laws, which may lead to potentially catastrophic failures if decisions for real-world physical systems are based on them. Physically Consistent Neural Networks (PCNNs) were recently developed to address these aforementioned issues, ensuring physical consistency while still leveraging NNs to attain state-of-the-art accuracy. In this work, we scale PCNNs to model building temperature dynamics and propose a thorough comparison with classical gray-box and black-box methods. More precisely, we design three distinct PCNN extensions, thereby exemplifying the modularity and flexibility of the architecture, and formally prove their physical consistency. In the presented case study, PCNNs are shown to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy, even outperforming classical NN-based models despite their constrained structure. Our investigations furthermore provide a clear illustration of NNs achieving seemingly good performance while remaining completely physics-agnostic, which can be misleading in practice. While this performance comes at the cost of computational complexity, PCNNs on the other hand show accuracy improvements of 17-35% compared to all other physically consistent methods, paving the way for scalable physically consistent models with state-of-the-art performance., Comment: Accepted in Applied Energy

Model-free Reinforcement Learning (RL) generally suffers from poor sample complexity, mostly due to the need to exhaustively explore the state-action space to find well-performing policies. On the other hand, we postulate that expert knowledge of the system often allows us to design simple rules we expect good policies to follow at all times. In this work, we hence propose a simple yet effective modification of continuous actor-critic frameworks to incorporate such rules and avoid regions of the state-action space that are known to be suboptimal, thereby significantly accelerating the convergence of RL agents. Concretely, we saturate the actions chosen by the agent if they do not comply with our intuition and, critically, modify the gradient update step of the policy to ensure the learning process is not affected by the saturation step. Despite the immense success of neural networks in modeling system dynamics from data, they often remain physics-agnostic black boxes. In the particular case of physical systems, they might consequently make physically inconsistent predictions, which makes them unreliable in practice. In this paper, we leverage the framework of Irreversible port-Hamiltonian Systems (IPHS), which can describe most multi-physics systems, and rely on Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODEs) to learn their parameters from data. Since IPHS models are consistent with the first and second principles of thermodynamics by design, so are the proposed Physically Consistent NODEs (PC-NODEs). Furthermore, the NODE training procedure allows us to seamlessly incorporate prior knowledge of the system properties in the learned dynamics. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by learning the thermodynamics of a building from the real-world measurements and the dynamics of a simulated gas-piston system. This manuscript offers the perspective of experimentalists on a number of modern data-driven techniques: model predictive control relying on Gaussian processes, adaptive data-driven control based on behavioral theory, and deep reinforcement learning. These techniques are compared in terms of data requirements, ease of use, computational burden, and robustness in the context of real-world applications. Our remarks and observations stem from a number of experimental investigations carried out in the field of building control in diverse environments, from lecture halls and apartment spaces to a hospital surgery center. The final goal is to support others in identifying what technique is best suited to tackle their own problems.

This paper presents a modeling and control framework for multibody flying robots subject to non-negligible aerodynamic forces acting on the centroidal dynamics. First, aerodynamic forces are calculated during robot flight in different operating conditions by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. Then, analytical models of the aerodynamics coefficients are generated from the dataset collected with CFD analysis. The obtained simplified aerodynamic model is also used to improve the flying robot control design. We present two control strategies: compensating for the aerodynamic effects via feedback linearization and enforcing the controller robustness with gain-scheduling. Hardware accelerators, such as those based on GPUs and FPGAs, offer an excellent opportunity to efficiently parallelize functionalities. Recently, modern embedded platforms started being equipped with such accelerators, resulting in a compelling choice for emerging, highly computational intensive workloads, like those required by next-generation autonomous driving systems. Alongside the need for computational efficiency, such workloads are commonly characterized by real-time requirements, which need to be satisfied to guarantee the safe and correct behavior of the system. To this end, this paper proposes a holistic framework to help designers partition real-time applications on heterogeneous platforms with hardware accelerators. The proposed model is inspired by a realistic setup of an advanced driving assistance system presented in the WATERS 2019 Challenge by Bosch, further generalized to encompass a broader range of heterogeneous architectures. The resulting analysis is linearized and used to encode an optimization problem that jointly (i) guarantees timing constraints, (ii) finds a suitable task-to-core mapping, (iii) assigns a priority to each task, and (iv) selects which computations to accelerate, seeking for the most convenient trade-off between the smaller worst-case execution time provided by accelerators and synchronization and queuing delays.

Replacing poorly performing existing controllers with smarter solutions will decrease the energy intensity of the building sector. Recently, controllers based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) have been shown to be more effective than conventional baselines. However, since the optimal solution is usually unknown, it is still unclear if DRL agents are attaining near-optimal performance in general or if there is still a large gap to bridge. In this paper, we investigate the performance of DRL agents compared to the theoretically optimal solution. To that end, we leverage Physically Consistent Neural Networks (PCNNs) as simulation environments, for which optimal control inputs are easy to compute. Furthermore, PCNNs solely rely on data to be trained, avoiding the difficult physics-based modeling phase, while retaining physical consistency. Due to their high energy intensity, buildings play a major role in the current worldwide energy transition. Building models are ubiquitous since they are needed at each stage of the life of buildings, i.e. for design, retrofitting, and control operations. Classical white-box models, based on physical equations, are bound to follow the laws of physics but the specific design of their underlying structure might hinder their expressiveness and hence their accuracy. On the other hand, black-box models are better suited to capture nonlinear building dynamics and thus can often achieve better accuracy, but they require a lot of data and might not follow the laws of physics, a problem that is particularly common for neural network (NN) models. To counter this known generalization issue, physics-informed NNs have recently been introduced, where researchers introduce prior knowledge in the structure of NNs to ground them in known underlying physical laws and avoid classical NN generalization issues. In this work, we present a novel physics-informed NN architecture, dubbed Physically Consistent NN (PCNN), which only requires past operational data and no engineering overhead, including prior knowledge in a linear module running in parallel to a classical NN. We formally prove that such networks are physically consistent - by design and even on unseen data - with respect to different control inputs and temperatures outside and in neighboring zones. We demonstrate their performance on a case study, where the PCNN attains an accuracy up to 40% better than a classical physics-based resistance-capacitance model on 3-day long prediction horizons. The landscape of workflow systems for scientific applications is notoriously convoluted with hundreds of seemingly equivalent workflow systems, many isolated research claims, and a steep learning curve. To address some of these challenges and lay the groundwork for transforming workflows research and development, the WorkflowsRI and ExaWorks projects partnered to bring the international workflows community together. This paper reports on discussions and findings from two virtual "Workflows Community Summits" (January and April, 2021). The overarching goals of these workshops were to develop a view of the state of the art, identify crucial research challenges in the workflows community, articulate a vision for potential community efforts, and discuss technical approaches for realizing this vision. To this end, participants identified six broad themes: FAIR computational workflows; AI workflows; exascale challenges; APIs, interoperability, reuse, and standards; training and education; and building a workflows community. Scientific workflows are a cornerstone of modern scientific computing, and they have underpinned some of the most significant discoveries of the last decade. Many of these workflows have high computational, storage, and/or communication demands, and thus must execute on a wide range of large-scale platforms, from large clouds to upcoming exascale HPC platforms. Workflows will play a crucial role in the data-oriented and post-Moore's computing landscape as they democratize the application of cutting-edge research techniques, computationally intensive methods, and use of new computing platforms. As workflows continue to be adopted by scientific projects and user communities, they are becoming more complex. Workflows are increasingly composed of tasks that perform computations such as short machine learning inference, multi-node simulations, long-running machine learning model training, amongst others, and thus increasingly rely on heterogeneous architectures that include CPUs but also GPUs and accelerators. The workflow management system (WMS) technology landscape is currently segmented and presents significant barriers to entry due to the hundreds of seemingly comparable, yet incompatible, systems that exist. Another fundamental problem is that there are conflicting theoretical bases and abstractions for a WMS. Systems that use the same underlying abstractions can likely be translated between, which is not the case for systems that use different abstractions. Scientific workflows have been used almost universally across scientific domains, and have underpinned some of the most significant discoveries of the past several decades. Many of these workflows have high computational, storage, and/or communication demands, and thus must execute on a wide range of large-scale platforms, from large clouds to upcoming exascale high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. These executions must be managed using some software infrastructure. Due to the popularity of workflows, workflow management systems (WMSs) have been developed to provide abstractions for creating and executing workflows conveniently, efficiently, and portably. While these efforts are all worthwhile, there are now hundreds of independent WMSs, many of which are moribund. As a result, the WMS landscape is segmented and presents significant barriers to entry due to the hundreds of seemingly comparable, yet incompatible, systems that exist. As a result, many teams, small and large, still elect to build their own custom workflow solution rather than adopt, or build upon, existing WMSs. This current state of the WMS landscape negatively impacts workflow users, developers, and researchers. The "Workflows Community Summit" was held online on January 13, 2021. The overarching goal of the summit was to develop a view of the state of the art and identify crucial research challenges in the workflow community. Prior to the summit, a survey sent to stakeholders in the workflow community (including both developers of WMSs and users of workflows) helped to identify key challenges in this community that were translated into 6 broad themes for the summit, each of them being the object of a focused discussion led by a volunteer member of the community. This report documents and organizes the wealth of information provided by the participants before, during, and after the summit.

This work presents a fully data-driven, black-box pipeline to obtain an optimal control policy for a multi-loop building control problem based on historical building and weather data, thus without the need for complex physics-based modelling. We demonstrate the method for joint control of room temperature and bidirectional EV charging to maximize the occupant thermal comfort and energy savings while leaving enough energy in the EV battery for the next trip. We modelled the room temperature with a recurrent neural network and EV charging with a piece-wise linear function. Using these models as a simulation environment, we applied a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to obtain an optimal control policy. The learnt policy achieves on average 17% energy savings over the heating season and 19% better comfort satisfaction than a standard RB room temperature controller. When a bidirectional EV is additionally connected and a two-tariff electricity pricing is applied, the MIMO DRL policy successfully leverages the battery and decreases the overall cost of electricity compared to two standard RB controllers, one controlling the room temperature and another controlling the bidirectional EV (dis-)charging. Finally, we demonstrate a successful transfer of the learnt DRL policy from simulation onto a real building, the DFAB HOUSE at Empa Duebendorf in Switzerland, achieving up to 30% energy savings while maintaining similar comfort levels compared to a conventional RB room temperature controller over three weeks during the heating season., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables

With the growing complexity of computational and experimental facilities, many scientific researchers are turning to machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze large scale ensemble data. With complexities such as multi-component workflows, heterogeneous machine architectures, parallel file systems, and batch scheduling, care must be taken to facilitate this analysis in a high performance computing (HPC) environment. In this paper, we present Merlin, a workflow framework to enable large ML-friendly ensembles of scientific HPC simulations. By augmenting traditional HPC with distributed compute technologies, Merlin aims to lower the barrier for scientific subject matter experts to incorporate ML into their analysis. Chemical sensors are usually affected by drift, have low fabrication reproducibility and can experience failure or breaking events over the long term. Albeit improvements in fabrication processes are often slow and inadequate for completely surmounting these issues, data analysis can be used as of now to improve the available device performances. The present paper illustrates an algorithm, called Self-Repairing (SR), developed for repairing classification models after the occurrences of failures in sensor arrays. The procedure considers replacing broken sensors with replicas and eventually Self-Repairing algorithm trains these blank elements. Unlike the habitual alternatives reported in literature, SR performs this operation without the need of a whole new recalibration, references gas measurements or transfer dataset and, at the same time, without interrupting the on-going procedure of gas identification. Furthermore, Self-Repairing algorithm can utilize most of the standard classifiers as core algorithm; in this paper SR has been applied to k-NN, PLS-DA and LDA as examples. Models have been tested in a synthetic and real scenario considering sensor arrays affected by drift and eventually by failures. Real experiment has been performed with a set of metal oxide sensors over an 18-months period. Finally, the algorithm has been compared with standard version of chosen classifiers (k-NN, LDA and PLS-DA) showing superior performances of Self-Repairing and increasing the tolerance versus consecutive failures.

Abstract. We develop the global period map in the context of derived geometry, generalising Griffiths' classical period map as well as the infinitesimal derived period map. We begin by constructing the derived period domain which classifies Hodge filtrations and enhances the classical period domain. We analyze the monodromy action. Then we associate to any polarized smooth projective map of derived stacks a canonical morphism of derived analytic stacks from the base into the quotient of the derived period domain by monodromy. We conclude the paper by discussing a few examples and a derived Torelli problem.
