6. FullBrain: a Social E-learning Platform

Abstract

We present FullBrain, a social e-learning platform where students share and track their knowledge. FullBrain users can post notes, ask questions and share learning resources in dedicated course and concept spaces. We detail two components of FullBrain: a SIR system equipped with query autocomplete and query autosuggestion, and a Leaderboard module to improve user experience. We analyzed the day-to-day users' usage of the SIR system, measuring a time-to-complete a request below 0.11s, matching or exceeding our UX targets. Moreover, we performed stress tests which lead the way for more detailed analysis. Through a preliminary user study and log data analysis, we observe that 97% of the users' activity is directed to the top 4 positions in the leaderboard.

Abstract

In this paper, we want to speculate about the possibility to model all the currently known/proposed approaches to terminology into a single schema. We will use the Entity-Relationship (ER) diagram as our tool for the conceptual data model of the problem and to express the associations between the objects of the study. We will analyse the onomasiological and semasiological approaches, the ontoterminology paradigm, and the frame-based model, and we will draw the consequences in terms of the conceptual data model. The result of this discussion will be used as the basis of the next step of the data organization in terms of standardized terminological records and Linked Data.

11. Incentives for Item Duplication under Fair Ranking Policies

Abstract

Ranking is a fundamental operation in information access systems, to filter information and direct user attention towards items deemed most relevant to them. Due to position bias, items of similar relevance may receive significantly different exposure, raising fairness concerns for item providers and motivating recent research into fair ranking. While the area has progressed dramatically over recent years, no study to date has investigated the potential problem posed by duplicated items. Duplicates and near-duplicates are common in several domains, including marketplaces and document collections available to search engines. In this work, we study the behaviour of different fair ranking policies in the presence of duplicates, quantifying the extra-exposure gained by redundant items. We find that fairness-aware ranking policies may conflict with diversity, due to their potential to incentivize duplication more than policies solely focused on relevance. This fact poses a problem for system owners who, as a result of this incentive, may have to deal with increased redundancy, which is at odds with user satisfaction. Finally, we argue that this aspect represents a blind spot in the normative reasoning underlying common fair ranking metrics, as rewarding providers who duplicate their items with increased exposure seems unfair for the remaining providers.

Abstract

Language interference is common in today's multilingual societies where more languages are being in contact and as a global final result leads to the creation of hybrid languages. These, together with doubts on their right to be officially recognised made emerge in the area of computational linguistics the problem of their automatic identification and further elaboration. In this paper, we propose a first attempt to identify the elements of a Ukrainian-Russian hybrid language, Surzhyk, through the adoption of the example-based rules created with the instruments of programming language R. Our example-based study consists of: 1) analysis of spoken samples of Surzhyk registered by Del Gaudio (2010) in Kyiv area and creation of the written corpus; 2) production of specific rules on the identification of Surzhyk patterns and their implementation; 3) testing the code and analysing the effectiveness.

Abstract

In this paper, we investigate how semantic relations between concepts extracted from medical documents can be employed to improve the retrieval of medical literature. Semantic relations explicitly represent relatedness between concepts and carry high informative power that can be leveraged to improve the effectiveness of retrieval functionalities of clinical decision support systems. We present preliminary results and show how relations are able to provide a sizable increase of the precision for several topics, albeit having no impact on others. Abstract

In-region location verification (IRLV) aims at verifying whether a user is inside a region of interest (ROI). In wireless networks, IRLV can exploit the features of the channel between the user and a set of trusted access points. In practice, the channel feature statistics is not available and we resort to machine learning (ML) solutions for IRLV. We first show that solutions based on either neural networks (NNs) or support vector machines (SVMs) and typical loss functions are Neyman-Pearson (N-P)-optimal at learning convergence for sufficiently complex learning machines and large training datasets . Indeed, for finite training, ML solutions are more accurate than the N-P test based on estimated channel statistics. Then, as estimating channel features outside the ROI may be difficult, we consider one-class classifiers, namely auto-encoders NNs and one-class SVMs, which however are not equivalent to the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), typically replacing the N-P test in the one-class problem. Numerical results support the results in realistic wireless networks, with channel models including path-loss, shadowing, and fading.

Abstract

In-region location verification (IRLV) in wireless networks is the problem of deciding if user equipment (UE) is transmitting from inside or outside a specific physical region (e.g., a safe room). The decision process exploits the features of the channel between the UE and a set of network access points (APs). We propose a solution based on machine learning (ML) implemented by a neural network (NN) trained with the channel features (in particular, noisy attenuation values) collected by the APs for various positions both inside and outside the specific region. The output is a decision on the UE position (inside or outside the region). By seeing IRLV as an hypothesis testing problem, we address the optimal positioning of the APs for minimizing either the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) or the cross entropy (CE) between the NN output and ground truth (available during the training). In order to solve the minimization problem we propose a twostage particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Abstract

Nowadays, most mobile devices are equipped with multiple wireless interfaces, causing an emerging research interest in device to device (D2D) communication: the idea behind the D2D paradigm is to exploit the proper interface to directly communicate with another user, without traversing any network infrastructure. A first issue related to this paradigm consists in the need for a coordinator, called controller, able to decide when activating a D2D connection is appropriate and eventually able to manage such connection. In this view, the paradigm of Software Defined Networking (SDN), can be exploited both to handle the data flows among the devices and to interact directly with every device. This work is focused on a scenario where a device is selected by the SDN controller, in order to become the master node of a WiFi-Direct network. The remaining nodes, called clients, can exchange data with other nodes through the master. The objective is to infer, through different Machine Learning approaches, the number of nodes actively involved in receiving data, exploiting only the information available at the client side and without modifying any standard communication protocol. The information about the number of client nodes is crucial when, e.g., a user desires a precise prediction of the transmission estimated time of arrival (ETA) while downloading a file.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce LemonizeTBX, a converter that enhances interoperability between terminological and lexicographical frameworks, acknowledging their divergent data modelling approaches. First, we present the theoretical implications of a conversion from the TermBase eXchange (TBX) concept-oriented framework to the OntoLex-Lemon sense-centred standpoint within Semantic Web technologies. Abstract

Europeana, a digital library that aggregates content from libraries, archives and museums from all around Europe, offers search functionality using the metadata of more than 62 million objects. However, in most cases, this data is only available in one language, while users come from countries with different languages. Europeana’s strategy for the improvement of multilingual experiences includes the design and implementation of a multilingual information retrieval system based on the translation of queries and metadata to English. As a first development in this context, we have implemented a pilot applying query translation to English for the Spanish version of the website in order to surface results that have English metadata associated with them. We conducted an evaluation to assess the performance of this pilot and identify issues. The good performance rates observed allowed us to take the pilot to production, and the issues identified led to a list of specific actions, which should be addressed to the extent possible before the application of a wider multilingual information retrieval system.

Abstract

This study aims at examining the phraseology of international disarmament treaties, through a comparative French-Italian case study, in a complementary perspective with a previous study on the terminology of this domain. The legal effectiveness of international disarmament treaties, as well as international efforts towards general and complete disarmament under international control, are subject to the consent of States to be bound by these treaties. Consequently, difficulties in the translation processes required in a multilingual and multicultural environment, such as that of international cooperation, cannot by any means hinder the application of international disarmament provisions. Furthermore, despite the high relevance and the strong impact they produce on international peace and security, the domain of disarmament still remains unexplored in the French-Italian language combination. Consequently, this study focuses on the phraseology of the legal language of disarmament treaties, in an attempt to fill the existing gaps in literature and to ensure their legal effectiveness also through the specificity and accuracy of their linguistic expression. The proposed methodological approach consists of three steps: 1) the analysis of the linguistic and conceptual dimension of the disarmament domain, in a bilingual perspective; 2) the implementation of a new specialised terminological resource on disarmament, named DITTO (Disarmament International Treaties TerminOlogy), freely accessible for consultation; 3) a translation exercise of the main international disarmament treaties for methodological validation purposes.
