Search

We present a novel representation learning method for downstream tasks such as anomaly detection and unsupervised transient classification in high-energy datasets. This approach enabled the discovery of a new fast X-ray transient (FXT) in the Chandra archive, XRT 200515, a needle-in-the-haystack event and the first Chandra FXT of its kind. Recent serendipitous breakthroughs in X-ray astronomy, including FXTs from binary neutron star mergers and an extragalactic planetary transit candidate, highlight the need for systematic transient searches in X-ray archives. We introduce new event file representations, E-t Maps and E-t-dt Cubes, designed to capture both temporal and spectral information, effectively addressing the challenges posed by variable-length event file time series in machine learning applications. Our pipeline extracts low-dimensional, informative features from these representations using principal component analysis or sparse autoencoders, followed by clustering in the embedding space with DBSCAN. New transients are identified within transient-dominant clusters or through nearest-neighbor searches around known transients, producing a catalog of 3,539 candidates (3,427 flares and 112 dips). XRT 200515 exhibits unique temporal and spectral variability, including an intense, hard <10 s initial burst followed by spectral softening in an ~800 s oscillating tail. We interpret XRT 200515 as either the first giant magnetar flare observed at low X-ray energies or the first extragalactic Type I X-ray burst from a faint LMXB in the LMC. We present a search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced from kaon decay that decay to two muons inside the ICARUS neutrino detector. This channel would be a signal of hidden sector models that can address outstanding issues in particle physics such as the strong CP problem and the microphysical origin of dark matter. The search is performed with data collected in the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab corresponding to $2.41\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target. No new physics signal is observed, and we set world-leading limits on heavy QCD axions, as well as for the Higgs portal scalar among dedicated searches. Limits are also presented in a model-independent way applicable to any new physics model predicting the process $K\to \pi+S(\to\mu\mu)$, for a long-lived particle S. This result is the first search for new physics performed with the ICARUS detector at Fermilab. It paves the way for the future program of long-lived particle searches at ICARUS.

Many treatments are non-randomly assigned, continuous in nature, and exhibit heterogeneous effects even at identical treatment intensities. Taken together, these characteristics pose significant challenges for identifying causal effects, as no existing estimator can provide an unbiased estimate of the average causal dose-response function. To address this gap, we introduce the Clustered Dose-Response Function (Cl-DRF), a novel estimator designed to discern the continuous causal relationships between treatment intensity and the dependent variable across different subgroups. This approach leverages both theoretical and data-driven sources of heterogeneity and operates under relaxed versions of the conditional independence and positivity assumptions, which are required to be met only within each identified subgroup. To demonstrate the capabilities of the Cl-DRF estimator, we present both simulation evidence and an empirical application examining the impact of European Cohesion funds on economic growth.

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) studies the interaction between resonator-confined radiation and natural atoms or other formally equivalent quantum excitations, under conditions where the quantum nature of photons is relevant. Phenomena studied in cavity QED can also be explored using superconducting artificial atoms and microwave photons in superconducting resonators. These circuit QED systems offer the possibility to reach the ultrastrong coupling regime with individual artificial atoms, unlike their natural counterparts. In this regime, the light-matter coupling strength reaches a considerable fraction of the bare resonance frequencies in the system. Here, we provide a careful analysis of both incoherent and coherent spectra in circuit QED systems consisting of a flux qubit interacting with an LC resonator. Despite these systems can be effectively described by the quantum Rabi model, as the corresponding cavity QED ones, we find distinctive features, depending on how the system is coupled to the output port, which become evident in the ultrastrong coupling regime., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

DarkSide-20k (DS-20k) is a dark matter detection experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. It utilises ~100 t of low radioactivity argon from an underground source (UAr) in its inner detector, with half serving as target in a dual-phase time projection chamber (TPC). The UAr cryogenics system must maintain stable thermodynamic conditions throughout the experiment's lifetime of >10 years. Continuous removal of impurities and radon from the UAr is essential for maximising signal yield and mitigating background. We are developing an efficient and powerful cryogenics system with a gas purification loop with a target circulation rate of 1000 slpm. Central to its design is a condenser operated with liquid nitrogen which is paired with a gas heat exchanger cascade, delivering a combined cooling power of >8 kW. Here we present the design choices in view of the DS-20k requirements, in particular the condenser's working principle and the cooling control, and we show test results obtained with a dedicated benchmarking platform at CERN and LNGS. We find that the thermal efficiency of the recirculation loop, defined in terms of nitrogen consumption per argon flow rate, is 95 % and the pressure in the test cryostat can be maintained within $\pm$(0.1-0.2) mbar. We further detail a 5-day cool-down procedure of the test cryostat, maintaining a cooling rate typically within -2 K/h, as required for the DS-20k inner detector. Additionally, we assess the circuit's flow resistance, and the heat transfer capabilities of two heat exchanger geometries for argon phase change, used to provide gas for recirculation. We conclude by discussing how our findings influence the finalisation of the system design, including necessary modifications to meet requirements and ongoing testing activities., Comment: 45 pages, 24 figures

In this paper we consider a colouring version of the general position problem. The \emph{$\gp $-chromatic number} is the smallest number of colours needed to colour $V(G)$ such that each colour class has the no-three-in-line property. We determine bounds on this colouring number in terms of the diameter, general position number, size, chromatic number, cochromatic number and total domination number and prove realisation results. We also determine it for several graph classes, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, complete multipartite graphs, block graphs and Cartesian products. We also show that the $\gp $-colouring problem is NP-complete.

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. This paper reports on a measurement of electron-ion recombination in liquid argon in the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). A clear dependence of recombination on the angle of the ionizing particle track relative to the drift electric field is observed. An ellipsoid modified box (EMB) model of recombination describes the data across all measured angles. These measurements are used for the calorimetric energy scale calibration of the ICARUS TPC, which is also presented. The impact of the EMB model is studied on calorimetric particle identification, as well as muon and proton energy measurements. Accounting for the angular dependence in EMB recombination improves the accuracy and precision of these measurements.

The ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detector has been taking physics data since 2022 as part of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. This paper details the equalization of the response to charge in the ICARUS time projection chamber (TPC), as well as data-driven tuning of the simulation of ionization charge signals and electronics noise. The equalization procedure removes non-uniformities in the ICARUS TPC response to charge in space and time. This work leverages the copious number of cosmic ray muons available to ICARUS at the surface. The ionization signal shape simulation applies a novel procedure that tunes the simulation to match what is measured in data. The end result of the equalization procedure and simulation tuning allows for a comparison of charge measurements in ICARUS between Monte Carlo simulation and data, showing good performance with minimal residual bias between the two.

Dual-phase time-projection chambers (TPCs) filled with noble elements are used for particle detection, with many focusing on rare-event searches. These detectors measure two signals: one from scintillation light, and another from drifting ionized electrons. The DarkSide-20k design uses a transparent vessel with external photodetectors. Electrodes, used to drift the electrons, are located between the active medium and the photodetectors, requiring them to be transparent to allow scintillation light to transmit through them. The transparent electrode coating for DarkSide-20k is poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) or Clevios. For rare-event search detectors, the fluorescence of materials that are between the active volume and the photodetectors may lead to backgrounds in the data. Since Clevios is a new material for TPC electrodes, its fluorescent properties need to be characterized to understand their potential impact on backgrounds. Previous studies have indicated that Clevios can fluoresce, with maximal fluorescence produced using UV-excitation. Our study analyzes the fluorescence of Clevios, under UV-excitation, using both time-resolved and spectral techniques between 4 K and 300 K. We find that the fluorescence of Clevios is negligible when compared to the fluorescence of common fluorescent materials used in TPCs, such as 1,1,4,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene (TPB)., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

The dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber is presently one of the leading technologies to search for dark matter particles with masses below 10 GeV/c$^2$. This was demonstrated by the DarkSide-50 experiment with approximately 50 kg of low-radioactivity liquid argon as target material. The next generation experiment DarkSide-20k, currently under construction, will use 1,000 times more argon and is expected to start operation in 2027. Based on the DarkSide-50 experience, here we assess the DarkSide-20k sensitivity to models predicting light dark matter particles, including Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and sub-GeV/c$^2$ particles interacting with electrons in argon atoms. With one year of data, a sensitivity improvement to dark matter interaction cross-sections by at least one order of magnitude with respect to DarkSide-50 is expected for all these models. A sensitivity to WIMP--nucleon interaction cross-sections below $1\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$ is achievable for WIMP masses above 800 MeV/c$^2$. Motivated by efficiency requirements, most anomaly detection and segmentation (AD&S) methods focus on processing low-resolution images, e.g., $224\times 224$ pixels, obtained by downsampling the original input images. In this setting, downsampling is typically applied also to the provided ground-truth defect masks. Yet, as numerous industrial applications demand identification of both large and tiny defects, the above-described protocol may fall short in providing a realistic picture of the actual performance attainable by current methods. Hence, in this work, we introduce a novel benchmark that evaluates methods on the original, high-resolution image and ground-truth masks, focusing on segmentation performance as a function of the size of anomalies. Our benchmark includes a metric that captures robustness with respect to defect size, i.e., the ability of a method to preserve good localization from large anomalies to tiny ones. Furthermore, we introduce an AD&S approach based on a novel Teacher-Student paradigm which relies on two shallow MLPs (the Students) that learn to transfer patch features across the layers of a frozen vision transformer (the Teacher). By means of our benchmark, we evaluate our proposal and other recent AD&S methods on high-resolution inputs containing large and tiny defects. Our proposal features the highest robustness to defect size, runs at the fastest speed, yields state-of-the-art performance on the MVTec AD dataset and state-of-the-art segmentation performance on the VisA dataset.

Visibility problems have been investigated for a long time under different assumptions as they pose challenging combinatorial problems and are connected to robot navigation problems. The mutual-visibility problem in a graph $G$ of $n$ vertices asks to find the largest set of vertices $X\subseteq V(G)$, also called $\mu$-set, such that for any two vertices $u,v\in X$, there is a shortest $u,v$-path $P$ where all internal vertices of $P$ are not in $X$. This means that $u$ and $v$ are visible w.r.t. $X$. Variations of this problem are known as total, outer, and dual mutual-visibility problems, depending on the visibility property of vertices inside and/or outside $X$. The mutual-visibility problem and all its variations are known to be $\mathsf{NP}$-complete on graphs of diameter $4$. In this paper, we design a polynomial-time algorithm that finds a $\mu$-set with size $\Omega\left( \sqrt{n/ \overline{D}} \right)$, where $\overline D$ is the average distance between any two vertices of $G$. Moreover, we show inapproximability results for all visibility problems on graphs of diameter $2$ and strengthen the inapproximability ratios for graphs of diameter $3$ or larger. More precisely, for graphs of diameter at least $3$ and for every constant $\varepsilon > 0$, we show that mutual-visibility and dual mutual-visibility problems are not approximable within a factor of $n^{1/3-\varepsilon}$, while outer and total mutual-visibility problems are not approximable within a factor of $n^{1/2 - \varepsilon}$, unless $\mathsf{P}=\mathsf{NP}$. Furthermore we study the relationship between the mutual-visibility number and the general position number in which no three distinct vertices $u,v,w$ of $X$ belong to any shortest path of $G$.

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated an excellent understanding of images and 3D data. However, both modalities have shortcomings in holistically capturing the appearance and geometry of objects. Meanwhile, Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs), which encode information within the weights of a simple Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), have emerged as an increasingly widespread modality that simultaneously encodes the geometry and photorealistic appearance of objects. This paper investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of ingesting NeRF into MLLM. We create LLaNA, the first general-purpose NeRF-language assistant capable of performing new tasks such as NeRF captioning and Q\&A. Notably, our method directly processes the weights of the NeRF's MLP to extract information about the represented objects without the need to render images or materialize 3D data structures. Moreover, we build a dataset of NeRFs with text annotations for various NeRF-language tasks with no human intervention. Based on this dataset, we develop a benchmark to evaluate the NeRF understanding capability of our method. The knowledge of scintillation quenching of $\alpha$-particles plays a paramount role in understanding $\alpha$-induced backgrounds and improving the sensitivity of liquid argon-based direct detection of dark matter experiments. We performed a relative measurement of scintillation quenching in the MeV energy region using radioactive isotopes ($^{222}$Rn, $^{218}$Po and $^{214}$Po isotopes) present in trace amounts in the DEAP-3600 detector and quantified the uncertainty of extrapolating the quenching factor to the low-energy region., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures (added 1 figure, revised 3 figures), 2 tables, revised sections 3, 4, 5. For a set of robots (or agents) moving in a graph, two properties are highly desirable: confidentiality (i.e., a message between two agents must not pass through any intermediate agent) and efficiency (i.e., messages are delivered through shortest paths). These properties can be obtained if the \textsc{Geodesic Mutual Visibility} (GMV, for short) problem is solved: oblivious robots move along the edges of the graph, without collisions, to occupy some vertices that guarantee they become pairwise geodesic mutually visible. This means there is a shortest path (i.e., a ``geodesic'') between each pair of robots along which no other robots reside. In this work, we optimally solve GMV on finite hexagonal grids $G_k$. This, in turn, requires first solving a graph combinatorial problem, i.e. determining the maximum number of mutually visible vertices in $G_k$., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures

A potential phase transition between a normal ground state and a photon-condensed ground state in many-dipole light-matter systems is a topic of considerable controversy, exasperated by conflicting no-go and counter no-go theorems and often ill-defined models. We clarify this long-lasting debate by analyzing two specific arrangements of atoms, including a 3D cubic lattice and a cavity-embedded square lattice layer, which provides a physical model for single-mode cavity QED with coupled dipoles in the thermodynamic limit. These models are shown to significantly differ from the standard Dicke model and, in the thermodynamic limit, give rise to renormalized Hopfield models. We show that a ferroelectric phase transition can (in principle) still occur and the description of the abnormal phase beyond the critical point requires the inclusion of nonlinear terms in the Holstein-Primakoff mapping. We also show how our model agrees with recent experiments.

Nebular spectral lines provide insight into the properties of the interstellar medium and the ionizing radiation within galaxies. The presence of high-energy ionization lines, such as He II, indicates the existence of hard ionizing photons, because the second ionization energy of helium is high (54 eV). The enigma surrounding the origin of these lines observed in star-forming galaxies persists, as stellar ionization cannot account for such high energy emission. This paper proposes that supersoft X-ray sources (SSS) may produce these high energy ionization lines in star-forming galaxies. We model the spectra of such sources using blackbody radiation and then add the blackbody to stellar population spectra to represent the overall spectra of galaxies. We then use a photoionization model to predict the resulting emission lines and compare the contribution of SSS to the observation of highly ionized lines in star-forming galaxies, both at low and high redshifts. We find that incorporating a blackbody with temperatures between kT = 20-100eV can boost the He II emission line ratio to the observed level. The blackbody temperature range aligns with the observed temperatures of the SSSs. The number of SSSs in spiral galaxies listed in Chandra catalogues, and our estimates of the total population, confirms that SSSs are promising candidates for the source of the He II ionization., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, comments are welcomed

Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) have emerged as a standard framework for representing 3D scenes and objects, introducing a novel data type for information exchange and storage. Concurrently, significant progress has been made in multimodal representation learning for text and image data. This paper explores a novel research direction that aims to connect the NeRF modality with other modalities, similar to established methodologies for images and text. To this end, we propose a simple framework that exploits pre-trained models for NeRF representations alongside multimodal models for text and image processing. Our framework learns a bidirectional mapping between NeRF embeddings and those obtained from corresponding images and text. This mapping unlocks several novel and useful applications, including NeRF zero-shot classification and NeRF retrieval from images or text., Comment: Accepted at CVPRW-INRV 2024

Anomaly Detection and Segmentation (AD&S) is crucial for industrial quality control. While existing methods excel in generating anomaly scores for each pixel, practical applications require producing a binary segmentation to identify anomalies. Due to the absence of labeled anomalies in many real scenarios, standard practices binarize these maps based on some statistics derived from a validation set containing only nominal samples, resulting in poor segmentation performance. This paper addresses this problem by proposing a test time training strategy to improve the segmentation performance. Indeed, at test time, we can extract rich features directly from anomalous samples to train a classifier that can discriminate defects effectively. Our general approach can work downstream to any AD&S method that provides an anomaly score map as output, even in multimodal settings. We introduce the inclusive synthetic control method (iSCM), a modification of synthetic control methods that includes units in the donor pool potentially affected, directly or indirectly, by an intervention. This method is ideal for situations where including treated units in the donor pool is essential or where donor units may experience spillover effects. The iSCM is straightforward to implement with most synthetic control estimators. As an empirical illustration, we re-estimate the causal effect of German reunification on GDP per capita, accounting for spillover effects from West Germany to Austria.

There is general agreement that some form of regulation is necessary both for AI creators to be incentivised to develop trustworthy systems, and for users to actually trust those systems. But there is much debate about what form these regulations should take and how they should be implemented. Most work in this area has been qualitative, and has not been able to make formal predictions. Here, we propose that evolutionary game theory can be used to quantitatively model the dilemmas faced by users, AI creators, and regulators, and provide insights into the possible effects of different regulatory regimes. We show that creating trustworthy AI and user trust requires regulators to be incentivised to regulate effectively. We demonstrate the effectiveness of two mechanisms that can achieve this. The first is where governments can recognise and reward regulators that do a good job. In that case, if the AI system is not too risky for users then some level of trustworthy development and user trust evolves. We then consider an alternative solution, where users can condition their trust decision on the effectiveness of the regulators. This leads to effective regulation, and consequently the development of trustworthy AI and user trust, provided that the cost of implementing regulations is not too high. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the effect of different regulatory regimes from an evolutionary game theoretic perspective.

Current bounds on neutrino Majorana mass are affected by significant uncertainties in the nuclear calculations for neutrinoless double-beta decay. A key issue for a data-driven improvement of the nuclear theory is the actual value of the axial coupling constant $g_A$, which can be investigated through forbidden $\beta$-decays. We present the first measurement of 4$^{th}$-forbidden $\beta$-decay of $^{115}$In with a cryogenic calorimeter based on Indium Iodide. Exploiting the enhanced spectral shape method for the first time to this isotope, our study accurately determines simultaneously spectral shape, $g_A$, and half-life. The Interacting Shell Model, which best fits our data, indicates a half-life for this decay at $T_{1/2}=(5.26\pm0.06) \times 10^{14}$,yr.

Abstract reasoning is a cornerstone of human intelligence, and replicating it with artificial intelligence (AI) presents an ongoing challenge. This study focuses on efficiently solving Raven's progressive matrices (RPM), a visual test for assessing abstract reasoning abilities, by using distributed computation and operators provided by vector-symbolic architectures (VSA). Instead of hard-coding the rule formulations associated with RPMs, our approach can learn the VSA rule formulations (hence the name Learn-VRF) with just one pass through the training data. Yet, our approach, with compact parameters, remains transparent and interpretable. Learn-VRF yields accurate predictions on I-RAVEN's in-distribution data, and exhibits strong out-of-distribution capabilities concerning unseen attribute-rule pairs, significantly outperforming pure connectionist baselines including large language models. The mutual-visibility problem in a graph $G$ asks for the cardinality of a largest set of vertices $S\subseteq V(G)$ so that for any two vertices $x,y\in S$ there is a shortest $x,y$-path $P$ so that all internal vertices of $P$ are not in $S$. This is also said as $x,y$ are visible with respect to $S$, or $S$-visible for short. Variations of this problem are known, based on the extension of the visibility property of vertices that are in and/or outside $S$. Such variations are called total, outer and dual mutual-visibility problems. This work is focused on studying the corresponding four visibility parameters in graphs of diameter two, throughout showing bounds and/or closed formulae for these parameters. The mutual-visibility problem in the Cartesian product of two complete graphs is equivalent to (an instance of) the celebrated Zarankievicz's problem. Here we study the dual and outer mutual-visibility problem for the Cartesian product of two complete graphs and all the mutual-visibility problems for the direct product of such graphs as well. We also study all the mutual-visibility problems for the line graphs of complete and complete bipartite graphs. As a consequence of this study, we present several relationships between the mentioned problems and some instances of the classical Tur\'an problem. In recent years, Neural Fields (NFs) have emerged as an effective tool for encoding diverse continuous signals such as images, videos, audio, and 3D shapes. When applied to 3D data, NFs offer a solution to the fragmentation and limitations associated with prevalent discrete representations. However, given that NFs are essentially neural networks, it remains unclear whether and how they can be seamlessly integrated into deep learning pipelines for solving downstream tasks. This paper addresses this research problem and introduces nf2vec, a framework capable of generating a compact latent representation for an input NF in a single inference pass. We demonstrate that nf2vec effectively embeds 3D objects represented by the input NFs and showcase how the resulting embeddings can be employed in deep learning pipelines to successfully address various tasks, all while processing exclusively NFs. We test this framework on several NFs used to represent 3D surfaces, such as unsigned/signed distance and occupancy fields. The paper explores the industrial multimodal Anomaly Detection (AD) task, which exploits point clouds and RGB images to localize anomalies. We introduce a novel light and fast framework that learns to map features from one modality to the other on nominal samples. At test time, anomalies are detected by pinpointing inconsistencies between observed and mapped features. Extensive experiments show that our approach achieves state-of-the-art detection and segmentation performance in both the standard and few-shot settings on the MVTec 3D-AD dataset while achieving faster inference and occupying less memory than previous multimodal AD methods. Multi-tasking machine learning (ML) models exhibit prediction abilities in domains with little to no training data available (few-shot and zero-shot learning). Over-parameterized ML models are further capable of zero-loss training and near-optimal generalization performance. An open research question is, how these novel paradigms contribute to solving tasks related to enhancing the renewable energy transition and mitigating climate change. A collection of unified ML tasks and datasets from this domain can largely facilitate the development and empirical testing of such models, but is currently missing. Here, we introduce the ETT-17 (Energy Transition Tasks-17), a collection of 17 datasets from six different application domains related to enhancing renewable energy, including out-of-distribution validation and testing data. We unify all tasks and datasets, such that they can be solved using a single multi-tasking ML model. We further analyse the dimensions of each dataset; investigate what they require for designing over-parameterized models; introduce a set of dataset scores that describe important properties of each task and dataset; and provide performance benchmarks.
