Abstract

This report presents testing of a prototype cantilevered liquid-nitrogen-cooled silicon mirror. This mirror was designed to be the first mirror for the new soft X-ray beamlines to be built as part of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade. Test activities focused on fracture, heat transfer, modal response and distortion, and indicated that the mirror functions as intended.

Issues concerning the surface-normal structure liquid Hg-Au alloys near a room temperature solubility limit of 0.14% atom % Au in Hg by the use of synchroton X-ray reflectivity are discussed.

Abstract

Lithium tetrahydridoboranate (LiBH4) may be a potentially interesting material for hydrogen storage, but in order to absorb and desorb hydrogen routinely and reversibly, the kinetics and thermodynamics need to be improved significantly. A priori, this material has one of the highest theoretical gravimetric hydrogen contents, 18.5 wt %, but unfortunately for practical applications, hydrogen release occurs at too high temperature in a non-reversible way. By means of in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (SR-PXD), the interaction between LiBH4 and different additives-SiO2, TiCl3, LiCl, and Au-is investigated. It is found that silicon dioxide reacts with molten LiBH4 and forms Li2SiO3 or Li4SiO4 at relatively low amounts of SiO2, e.g., with 5.0 and 9.9 mol % SiO2 in LiBH4, whereas, for higher amounts of SiO2 (e.g., 25.5 mol %), only the Li2SiO3 phase is observed. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a solid-state reaction occurs between LiBH4 and TiCl3 to form LiCl at room temperature. At elevated temperatures, more LiCl is formed simultaneously with a decrease in the diffracted intensity from TiCl3. Lithium chloride shows some solubility in solid LiBH 4 at T > 100°C. This is the first report of substituents that accommodate the structure of LiBH4 by a solid/solid dissolution reaction. Gold is found to react with molten LiBH4 forming a Li-Au alloy with CuAu3-type structure. These studies demonstrate that molten LiBH4 has a high reactivity, and finding a catalyst for this H-rich system may be a challenge. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

In this article, the authors report on the development of solid-state integrated cooling devices using Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3/Bi2Te2Se thermoelectric thin films fabricated using sputtering deposition. The multilayer thin films have a periodic structure consisting of alternating Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 layers or Bi2Te3 and Bi2Te2Se layers, where each layer is about 10 nm thick. The deposited Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 multilayer thin film has a p-type conductivity and the deposited Bi2Te3/Bi2Te2Se multilayer thin film has an n-type conductivity. The multilayer structure of films and the interface of layers were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and reflectivity. Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3/Bi2Te2Se multilayer thin film-based integrated cooling devices were fabricated using standard integrated circuit fabrication process. The temperature difference was measured from the fabricated cooling devices. The devices could be good candidates for the application of high-efficiency solid-state microcooling. 50. Resonant X-ray Scattering From the Surface of a Dilute Liquid Hg-Au Alloy

Abstract

We present the first resonant x-ray reflectivity measurements from a liquid surface. The surface structure of the liquid Hg-Au alloy system just beyond the solubility limit of 0.14at% Au in Hg had previously been shown to exhibit a unique surface phase characterized by a low-density surface region with a complicated temperature dependence. In this paper we present reflectivity measurements near the Au LII1 edge, for 0.2at% Au in Hg at room temperature. The data are consistent with a concentration of Au in the surface region that can be no larger than about 30at%. These results rule out previous suggestions that pure Au layers segregate at the alloy surface., Engineering and Applied Sciences
