Abstract: View factor – defined as fraction of total outgoing radiation from surface 1 intercepted by surface 2 – is a key concept in solving the radiative heat transfer in systems of surfaces. Analytical forms of the view factor have been developed by means of integration for many conventional systems of 2D and 3D surfaces in various spatial positions. However, little investigation has been carried out for situations in which there is no complete visibility between the surfaces involved in radiative exchange due to configuration of 3D surfaces or due to presence of interposing object that obstruct partially the mutual visibility. Radiative heat exchange was modeled in a finite length cylindrical annulus consisting of non-isothermal diffusely-emitting surfaces. The canonical definition of the view factor was extended by means of an analytical approach to both 3D and 2D surfaces with shading effects (incomplete mutual visibility) and numerical algorithms were developed in order to calculate view factors values and test view factor algebra rules. The system considered in this paper was an axysymmetric cylindrical annulus – frequently used in many heat transfer applications. View factor values for various surface elements were calculated by means of numerical integration. View factor algebra rules – summation and reciprocity – were verified. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Thermal energy storage is essential in solar cooling applications due to intermittent and uncontrollable availability of solar energy. Various technologies are available for low temperature energy storage. In the present work, a solar-assisted ejector cooling system with latent heat cold storage and conventional auxiliary heating was considered. The latter was applied in order to assure constant operating conditions for the ejector cycle. The analysis was carried out for an office building with cooling requirements during working hours only. The capacity of the cold storage was selected to ensure full coverage of the cooling load throughout the periods with cooling requirements. A quantitative energy analysis is presented, assessing the influence of parameters such as rated system power, ejector energy efficiency, solar collector area, ejector operating conditions and the amount of energy from the auxiliary source. Two energy efficiency parameters were defined, based on which the optimum system configuration and operating principle were identified. The advantages of each configuration were described. Abstract: Indoor space cooling represents a large potential for solar energy use due to the relative coincidence between energy availability and cooling demand. Solar-assisted air conditioning (AC) applications emerged with the development of high efficiency solar collectors. Energy storage (hot or cold) must be implemented for solar-assisted AC applications when cooling demand is present during intervals without available solar energy and also for cooling capacity optimisation (“peak shaving”). The present paper analyses a solar-assisted ejector cooling system with cold storage. Simulations were carried out over one year considering climatic data for a hot location (Béchar, Algeria) and the performance of the system was assessed for a set of design conditions. Effects of cold storage upon comfort conditions and energy demand were evaluated. Maximum room temperature and overall interval of time during which the room temperature exceeded the set-point value were the parameters used to quantify system performance. It was found that cold storage improved comfort conditions compared to a system without storage. For some design conditions it was found that increasing the cold storage capacity did not result in improved comfort conditions. The control algorithm of the system was identified as the cause of this behaviour. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Integration of building materials incorporating PCMs into the building envelope can result in increased efficiency of the built environment. A PCM-enhanced wall system is proposed in this paper and a simplified model for the heat exchange between the indoor environment and ambient was developed. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of occupancy pattern and ventilation on the energy savings potential of the wall system. It was found that (1) the occupancy pattern influences the value of the PCM melting point for which maximum energy savings value was reached and (2) the ventilation and its pattern reduces the relative value of the energy savings. Abstract: A new type of composite wall system incorporating phase change materials (PCMs) was proposed and its potential for air conditioning/heating energy savings in continental temperate climate was evaluated. The novelty of the wall system consists of the fact that two PCM wallboards, impregnated with different PCMs are used. The structure of the new wall system is that of a three-layer sandwich-type insulating panel with outer layers consisting of PCM wallboards and middle layer conventional thermal insulation. The PCM wallboard layers have different functions: the external layer has a higher value of the PCM melting point and it is active during hot season and the internal layer with a PCM melting point near set point temperature for heating is active during cold season. A year-round simulation of a room built using the new wall system was carried out and the effect of PCM presence into the structure of the wall system was assessed. It was found that the new wall system contributes to annual energy savings and reduces the peak value of the cooling/heating loads. Abstract: A new microencapsulated PCM (Phase Change Material) slurry (MEPCS) at high concentration (45% w/w) was developed based on microencapsulated Rubitherm RT6. Its heat storage and heat transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated in order to assess its suitability for integration into a low temperature heat storage system for solar air conditioning applications. Differential scanning calorimetry tests have been conducted to evaluate the cold storage capacity and phase change temperature range. An experimental setup was built in order to quantify the natural convection heat transfer occurring from a vertical helically coiled tube immersed in the MEPCS. First, tests were carried out using water in order to obtain natural convection heat transfer correlations and then a comparison was made with the results obtained for the MEPCS. It was found that inside the phase change interval the values of the heat transfer coefficient for the MEPCS were significantly higher than for water, under identical temperature conditions. Abstract: A new microencapsulated phase change material slurry based on microencapsulated Rubitherm RT6 at high concentration (45% w/w) was tested. Some heat storage properties and heat transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated in order to assess its suitability for the integration into a low temperature heat storage system for solar air conditioning applications. DSC tests were conducted to evaluate the cold storage capacity and phase change temperature range. A phase change interval of approximately 3°C and a hysteresis behaviour of the enthalpy were identified. An experimental set-up was built in order to quantify the natural convection heat transfer occurring from a vertical helically coiled tube immersed in the phase change material slurry. First, tests were carried out using water in order to obtain natural convection heat transfer correlations. Then a comparison was conducted with the results obtained for the phase change material slurry. It was found that the values of the heat transfer coefficient for the phase change material slurry were higher than for water, under identical temperature conditions inside the phase change interval. Abstract: Over the last years the use of phase change slurries (PCSs) based on microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) increased considerably due to their capacity of adaptation to various heat storage systems. PCSs are obtained by dispersing a microencapsulated PCM (particle diameter 5–20μm) into a heat carrier fluid (e.g. water). Heat storage systems are used in applications where the available energy supply is not synchronous with the demand, such as solar thermal and waste heat recovery systems. The theoretical study conducted here – based on heat transfer and energy conservation equations – is intended to developing a theoretical model of the heat storage properties of phase change slurries capable of predicting the transient thermal response of a thermal energy storage system (TES). Most of the research work was focused on investigating the enthalpy–temperature curves resulting from a heating–cooling cycle around the melting point of the PCM.
