Abstract

This article analyzes SST remote forcing on the interannual variability of Sahel summer (June-September) moderate (below 75th percentile) and heavy (above 75th percentile) daily precipitation events during the period 1981-2016. Evidence is given that interannual variability of these events is markedly different. The occurrence of moderate daily rainfall events appears to be enhanced by positive SST anomalies over the tropical North Atlantic and Mediterranean, which act to increase low-level moisture advection toward the Sahel from the equatorial and north tropical Atlantic (the opposite holds for negative SSTs anomalies). In contrast, heavy and extreme daily rainfall events seem to be linked to El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Mediterranean variability. Under La Nina conditions and a warmer Mediterranean, vertical atmospheric instability is increased over the Sahel and low-level moisture supply from the equatorial Atlantic is enhanced over the area (the reverse is found for opposite-sign SST anomalies). Further evidence suggests that interannual variability of Sahel rainfall is mainly dominated by the extreme events. These results have implications for seasonal forecasting of Sahel moderate and heavy precipitation events based on SST predictors, as significant predictability is found from 1 to 4 months in advance.

4. Impact of Atlantic multidecadal variability on rainfall intensity distribution and timing of the West African monsoon.

Abstract

Previous studies agree on an impact of the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on the total seasonal rainfall amounts over the Sahel. However, whether and how the AMV affects the distribution of rainfall or the timing of the West African monsoon is not well known. Here we seek to explore these impacts by analyzing daily rainfall outputs from climate model simulations with an idealized AMV forcing imposed in the North Atlantic, which is representative of the observed one. The setup follows a protocol largely consistent with the one proposed by the Component C of the Decadal Climate Prediction Project (DCPP-C). We start by evaluating model's performance in simulating precipitation, showing that models underestimate it over the Sahel, where the mean intensity is consistently smaller than observations. Conversely, models overestimate precipitation over the Guinea coast, where too many rainy days are simulated. In addition, most models underestimate the average length of the rainy season over the Sahel; some are due to a monsoon onset that is too late and others due to a cessation that is too early. In response to a persistent positive AMV pattern, models show an enhancement in total summer rainfall over continental West Africa, including the Sahel. Under a positive AMV phase, the number of wet days and the intensity of daily rainfall events are also enhanced over the Sahel. The former explains most of the changes in seasonal rainfall in the northern fringe, while the latter is more relevant in the southern region, where higher rainfall anomalies occur. This dominance is connected to the changes in the number of days per type of event; the frequency of both moderate and heavy events increases over the Sahel's northern fringe. Conversely, over the southern limit, it is mostly the frequency of heavy events which is enhanced, thus affecting the mean rainfall intensity there. Extreme rainfall events are also enhanced over the whole Sahel in response to a positive phase of the AMV. Over the Sahel, models with stronger negative biases in rainfall amounts compared to observations show weaker changes in response to AMV, suggesting that systematic biases could affect the simulated responses. The monsoon onset over the Sahel shows no clear response to AMV, while the demise tends to be delayed, and the overall length of the monsoon season enhanced between 2 and 5 d with the positive AMV pattern. The effect of AMV on the seasonality of the monsoon is more consistent to the west of 10 ∘ W, with all models showing a statistically significant earlier onset, later demise, and enhanced monsoon season with the positive phase of the AMV. Our results suggest a potential for the decadal prediction of changes in the intraseasonal characteristics of rainfall over the Sahel, including the occurrence of extreme events. Abstract

International audience; This article presents a climatological study of the tropical Atlantic surface wind convergence, one of the main drivers of the marine intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) precipitations, including coastal northeastern Brazilian and West African rainfalls. Climatological monthly mean surface wind convergence budget, as well as that of their month-to-month variations, is analysed over the 2000–2009 decade, using ocean–atmosphere reanalyses and satellite-derived data sets. Sea surface temperature (SST) influence is particularly investigated via comparison of its Laplacian with that of sea level pressure. Results for monthly means reveal that the Lindzen-Nigam paradigm does hold in regions of deep convection but only on their flanks. In deep convection regions, the budget analysis suggests the entrainment due to elevated heating by cumulus convection as the leading term. Elsewhere, over the ‘open ocean ITCZ’ meridional flanks, as well as over the ‘coastal one’ (Gulf of Guinea and northeastern Brazilian coasts), the pressure contribution is positive and largely dominated by its component below the boundary layer closely related to the SST. Horizontal advection is also found important over these areas, but with the pressure as the first-order driver. Otherwise, month-to-month variations of ITCZ are controlled by the geostrophy within the pressure contribution tightly dominated by the free tropospheric component.

Abstract

International audience; We present a climatological study of the tropical Atlantic surface wind convergence, in order to establish wether is constitutes a major drivers of the marine precipitations distributions in general, and particularly over the coastal parts of Brazilian and African monsoon rainfalls. We analyze the climatological monthly-mean surface wind convergence budget, as well as that of their month-to-month variations over the 2000-2009 decade. Our main tool is an atmosphere mixed layer model forced by atmospheric reanalyses; and observed satellite datasets. We articularly investigate the influence of sea surface temperature (SST), via comparison of its Laplacian with that of sea level pressure. The convergence model is qualitatively very accurate for monthly means over the whole basin, with the notable exception of the core of the marine ITCZ, but generally overestimates the intensities. Results show that the positive and negative convergence signals are generally to the first order due at least qualitatively to sea level horizontal pressure gradient structures. Effect of advection of convergence or divergence may be as important however near the continents. Convergence and divergences moreover occur essentially within the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL), from about 850hPa to the sea surface where interactions with SST are expected to be the strongest. Our most remarkable results consists in the evidence of frequent tight correspondence between the Laplacian of MABL pressure, which explains principally the convergence distribution of the model, and the Laplacian of SST. This suggests the possibility of a local control of marine rainfall by the temperature distribution of underlying waters.

Abstract

International audience; Clustered with the summer 2016 DACCIWA (EU FP7) field campaign, the OLACTA project is focused on the role of the air-sea interaction on the southern West-African climate dynamics. This project thus aims at advancing knowledge on the low-level atmospheric circulation in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic in connection with air-sea interactions in the presence of significant sea-surface temperature (SST) gradients and highly variable background wind conditions. Three flights took place on 2, 7 and 14 of July 2016 on board SAFIRE ATR 42 with roughly 10 hours of flying time in total. The field campaign allowed for airborne measurements of SST that can be compared with satellite observations and observations of boundary layer structure with LIDAR instrument. The regions measured included cooling areas associated with coastal upwelling off the Southern West African coast and warm sea regions often observed to be collocated with regions of offshore afternoon convection, with the SST gradients being a potential source of instability

Abstract

International audience; The north-eastern Tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) becomes very warm in boreal summer, north of the seasonal equatorial cold tongue, with a maximum in the vicinity of the InterTropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The ITCZ has a significant contribution in the functioning and partitioning of the water cycle over the ocean, but also over West Africa. Using the regional Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF), this study aims to describe and quantify the influence of the warm SST band on the ITCZ: two simulations examine independently the cases when the SST is not warming or not cooling regarding its regular seasonal evolution. It then allows to separate the influences of northern and southern SST fronts (where the meridional gradients are most intense) on surface winds and precipitation. The seasonal SST distribution impact on the ITCZ is indeed found to be very strong, with significant consequences on the moisture flux within the marine ITCZ and toward West Africa.

Abstract

The surface-wind response to sea-surface temperature (SST) and SST meridional gradient is investigated in the Gulf of Guinea by using daily observations and re-analyses in the 2000-2009 decade, with a focus on boreal spring and summer months (May to August), where quasi-biweekly fluctuations in the position of the northern front of the equatorial cold tongue induce quasi-biweekly equatorial SST anomalies. Following a large-scale wind acceleration (deceleration), an equatorial SST cold (warm) anomaly is created within a few days. In order to explain the local atmospheric response to this SST anomaly, the two following mechanisms are invoked: first, a colder (warmer) ocean decreases (increases) the vertical stability in the marine atmospheric boundary layer, which favours a weaker (stronger) surface wind; and second, a negative (positive) anomaly of SST meridional gradient induces a positive (negative) anomaly of the sea-level-pressure meridional gradient, which decelerates (accelerates) the surface wind. The first mechanism has an immediate effect in the equatorial belt between 1 degrees S and 1 degrees N (and to a lesser extent between 3 degrees S and 1 degrees S), whereas the second takes 1 or 2 days to adjust and damps anomalous southeasterlies up to 800 hPa in the low troposphere between 7 degrees S and 1 degrees N, through reversed anomalies of meridional SST and pressure gradient. This negative feedback leads to weaker (stronger) winds in the southeastern tropical Atlantic, which forces the opposite phase of the oscillation within about 1 week. Around the Equator, where the amplitude of the oscillation is found to be maximal, both mechanisms combine to maximize the wind response to the front fluctuations. Between the Equator and the coast, a low-level secondary atmospheric circulation takes control of the surface-wind acceleration or deceleration around 3 degrees N, which reduces the influence of the SST-front fluctuations.

Abstract

A quasi-biweekly oscillation in the northern front of the eastern equatorial Atlantic's cold tongue is investigated by using observations and reanalyses in the 2000-2009 decade, with a focus on boreal spring and summer months (May to August). Fluctuations of the front latitude induce quasi-biweekly equatorial sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies that are strongly coupled with surface wind anomalies. Linear regressions performed onto a Northern Cold Tongue Index emphasize the two following mechanisms to explain the atmospheric adjustment to SST anomalies: first, a colder (warmer) ocean decreases (increases) the vertical mixing in the marine atmospheric boundary layer, which favors a weaker (stronger) surface wind; and second, a positive (negative) anomaly of SST meridional gradient induces a negative (positive) anomaly in sea level pressure meridional gradient, which accelerate (decelerate) the surface wind. The first mechanism has an immediate effect, while the second takes one or two days to adjust. Following a large-scale wind acceleration (deceleration), the second mechanism weakens (strengthens) southeasterlies in the low troposphere south of 1°N, through reversed SST and meridional pressure gradient anomalies, thereby forcing the opposite phase of the oscillation within about 6 to 8 days. Between the equator and the coast, both mechanisms possibly explain the observed intensification of the recirculation loop between the equator and the Guinean coast in the low troposphere, which sustains and accelerates surface wind around 3°N.

32. Intraseasonal variability of tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperature: air-sea interaction over upwelling fronts.

Abstract

Tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) maximum intraseasonal variability (ISV) and their interaction with local surface winds are investigated, applying statistical analysis to observations and to a recent coupled reanalysis over the 2000-2009 decade. Five cores of strong ISV emerge, with standard deviation reaching about 1 °C in frontal areas of the three main upwelling systems: equatorial, Angola-Benguela and Senegal-Mauritania (the southern side of the Canary upwelling). West of 10 °W along the Equator, a 20-60-day peak caused by tropical instability waves is shown to generate surface wind anomalies through the adjustment of the horizontal surface pressure gradient in addition to the modification of near-surface atmospheric stratification. East of 10°W along the Equator, an intense biweekly oscillation increases the ocean and atmosphere ISV. In the two coastal upwelling fronts, intraseasonal SST anomalies resemble each other. They are shown to be influenced by coastal Kelvin waves in addition to large-scale wind forcing. Over the Angola-Benguela upwelling, coastal wind bursts controlling the SST ISV are associated with anomalously strong pressure patterns related to the Madden-Julian Oscillation, the St Helena anticyclone and the Antarctic Oscillation. In the Senegal-Mauritania upwelling, the wind anomalies mainly linked to the Azores anticyclone in the southern front during November to May appear to be connected to the Saharan heat-low in the northern front from June to September. In all five regions and as expected for such upwelling regimes, vertical oceanic mixing represents the dominant term in the mixed-layer heat budget. In the equatorial band, as found in previous studies, horizontal advection is equally important, while it appears surprisingly weak in coastal fronts. 33. Potential Contribution of Climate Conditions on COVID-19 Pandemic Transmission over West and North African Countries.

Abstract

COVID-19, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a very contagious disease that has killed many people worldwide. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the spread of the disease appears to be slower in Africa. Although several studies have been published on the relationship between meteorological parameters and COVID-19 transmission, the effects of climate conditions on COVID-19 remain largely unexplored and without consensus. However, the transmission of COVID-19 and sensitivity to climate conditions are also not fully understood in Africa. Here, using available epidemiological data over 275 days (i.e., from 1 March to 30 November 2020) taken from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control of the European Union database and daily data of surface air temperature specific humidity and water vapor from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), this paper investigates the potential contribution of climate conditions on COVID-19 transmission over 16 selected countries throughout three climatic regions of Africa (i.e., Sahel, Maghreb, and Gulf of Guinea). The results highlight statistically significant inverse correlations between COVID-19 cases and temperature over the Maghreb and the Gulf of Guinea regions. In contrast, positive correlations are found over the Sahel area, especially in the central part, including Niger and Mali. Correlations with specific humidity and water vapor parameters display significant and positive values over the Sahelian and the Gulf of Guinea countries and negative values over the Maghreb countries. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic transmission is influenced differently across the three climatic regions: (i) cold and dry environmental conditions over the Maghreb; (ii) warm and humid conditions over the Sahel; and (iii) cold and humid conditions over the Gulf of Guinea. In addition, for all three climatic regions, even though the climate impact has been found to be significant, its effect appears to display a secondary role based on the explanatory power variance compared to non-climatic factors assumed to be dominated by socio-economic factors and early strong public health measures. Abstract

We analyse uncertainties associated with the main features of the annual cycle of West African rainfall (amplitude, timing, duration) in 15 CMIP5 simulations over the Sahelian and Guinean regions with satellite daily precipitation estimates. The annual cycle of indices based on daily rainfall such as the frequency and the intensity of wet days, the consecutive dry (CDD) and wet (CWD) days, the 95th percentile of daily rainfall (R95), have been assessed. Over both regions, satellite datasets provide more consistent results on the annual cycle of monthly precipitation than on higher-frequency rainfall indices, especially over the Guinean region. By contrast, CMIP5 simulations display much higher uncertainties in both the mean precipitation climatology and higher-frequency indices. Over both regions, most of them overestimate the frequency of wet days. Over the Guinean region, the difficulty of models to represent the bimodality of the annual cycle of precipitation involves systematic biases in the frequency of wet days. Likewise, we found strong uncertainties in the simulation of the CWD and the CDD over both areas. Finally, models generally provide too early (late) onset dates over the Sahel (the Guinean region) and overestimate rainfall during the early and late monsoon phases. These errors are strongly coupled with errors in the latitudinal position of the ITCZ and do not compensate at the annual scale or when considering West Africa as a whole.

Abstract

In order to increase the effectiveness and the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment procedures of the most common diseases, algorithmic pathways have been developed and applied within the implementation of the "Bamako Initiative Strategy" at the health post level in Senegal. Among the many expected advantages of these pathways, was a reduction of abusive prescriptions of parental drugs. A study comparing the trend of the prescriptions 2 years before (1991) and 2 years after (1996) the implementation of the Bamako Initiative strategy, was conducted using 810 randomly selected patients in 7 out of the 19 health posts of the Tambacounda Health district, one of the 45 health districts of Senegal. In 1991, all the oral drugs prescribed (sirup, pills, powder) represented 54.5% against 45.5% for parental drugs (intramuscular and intravenous drugs). These proportions had risen to respectively 78.1% and 21.9% in 1996. The difference thus observed is statistically significant with a khi2 test of 47.76 and p<10(-7). This result then suggests that the use of pathways had highly reduced the prescription of parental drugs among patients treated in the health posts of the Tambacounda health district in Senegal.
