Abstract

A substance abuse consultation team can aid in the successful intervention with hospitalized trauma patients suffering from alcohol or drug related problems. Screening methods, such as physical examinations, blood alcohol concentration testing, urine drug screen tests and information from family and friends were used to diagnose 100 patients for substance abuse in a tertiary-care teaching hospital. 62% of these were 'rescreened' by the SAC.

Abstract

Three patients with venographically proven axillary vein thromboses were treated with low-dose streptokinase infused directly into the involved vein. These veins had been occluded from twelve hours to three weeks. No complications and no marked systemic effects occurred. Patency was achieved in all three patients. Directly infused, low-dose streptokinase may provide an alternative to treatment with heparin and may eliminate the sequela of chronic venous thrombosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A case of acute cardiac tamponade caused by an internal jugular central venous catheter which was successfully treated is reported. The English literature is reviewed and shows that tamponade can occur up to 37 days after insertion and has a 65% mortality. The tamponade is usually caused by the actual infusate and not by blood. Abstract

Abdominal injuries cause death. Unlike more commonly encountered strains, sprains, lacerations, pulled muscles, and fractures, abdominal injuries are often subtle in presentation. Because of this and because they are much less frequently encountered, they are often either unrecognized or poorly treated. The best defense that we and our athletes can use against the possibility of a life-threatening abdominal trauma is to be aware of the organs that one may expect to see injured and their presentation.
