The prediction of solar potential is an important step toward the evaluation of PV plant production for the best energy planning. In this study, the discrete Kalman filter model was implemented for short-term solar resource forecasting one the Dakar site in Senegal. The model input parameters are constituted at a time t of the air temperature, the relative humidity and the global solar radiation. The expected output at time t+T is the global solar radiation. The model performance is evaluated with the square root of the normalized mean squared error (NRMSE), the absolute mean of the normalized error (NMAE), the average bias error (NMBE). The model Validation is carried out by means of the data measured within the Polytechnic Higher School of Dakar for one year. The simulation results following the 20 minute horizon show a good correlation between the prediction and the measurement with an NRMSE of 4.8%, an NMAE of 0.27% and an NMBE of 0.04%. This model could contribute to help photovoltaic based energy providers to better plan the production of solar photovoltaic plants in Sahelian environments.

Abstract Background Niger is a large country with many distant locations that can be difficult to access because the Sahara Desert covers 80% of the country’s land. In Niger, just 49% of residents have access to a health centre within 5 km of their house. Health care may be difficult to access in the Diffa region of Niger, as non-state armed groups strike on a regular basis and floods cause a high rate of vulnerability. This study looked at how mobile clinics can improve healthcare accessibility for vulnerable populations in the Diffa region. Methods This was a descriptive-comparative study conducted over the period from 15 August 2022 to 15 October 2022, using three months’ mobile outreach clinic to improve health outcomes in five districts of the Diffa region, including Bosso, Diffa, Goudoumaria, Mainé Soroa, and N’guigmi. Results During the three months of mobile outreach clinic, 42,251 people were sensitized about mobile outreaches and 12,004 were treated. A total of 18,708 vaccine doses were delivered to children aged 0–11 months, with Maine Soroa, Goudoumaria, Bosso, Diffa, and N’guigmi districts accounting for 29.24%, 24.62%, 18.54%, 18.05%, and 9.5%, respectively. In the same line, Goudoumaria, Bosso, and Maine Soroa districts recorded relatively high antenatal clinic (ANC) attendance percentages of 27.85%, 25.62%, and 21.89%, respectively. Furthermore, mobile clinic outreach provided a variety of healthcare treatments, both curative and preventative. Mobile Clinic 2 increased vaccine dose received among children aged 0–11 months by 1.11% (95%CI: 0.15%-2.06%, P = 0.023) when compared to Mobile Clinic 1. In the same line, mobile clinic showed a statistically significant increase of ANC between the three clinical rotations (P = 0001), showing an increased ANC update over time. Conclusion This study found that mobile outreach clinic can play an important role in improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations in the Diffa region. However, well-designed, and frequent mobile clinic outreach should be planned and included in the country’s public health policy.

Some basic parameters for equine in vitro embryo production have not yet been established, including the optimum temperature for maturation and embryo culture, and the optimum CO2 concentration and pH during early embryo development. To explore this, we first performed cultures in incubators set at 37.2°C, 37.7°C or 38.2°C. At these temperatures, the corresponding maturation rates were 33%, 38% and 42%; cleavage rates were 84%, 86% and 88%; and blastocyst rates were 35%, 44% and 44% per injected oocyte. These rates did not differ significantly (P > 0.2). We then evaluated three different CO2 concentrations (6%, 6.5% or 7% CO2) in 5% O2 for culture over Days 0–5 after intracytoplasmic sperm injection, using a commercial human embryo medium with added serum, at 38.2°C. The pH values of these media were 7.36, 7.33 and 7.29 respectively. In the presence of 6%, 6.5% or 7% CO2, cleavage rates were 68%, 80% and 70% respectively, and blastocyst rates per injected oocyte were 42%, 54% and 27% respectively. The blastocyst rate for the 7% CO2 treatment was significantly lower than that for the 6.5% CO2 treatment (P < 0.05). We conclude that equine in vitro embryo production is equally effective within the range of 37.2–38.2°C, but that equine early cleavage stage development is sensitive to small changes in CO2 atmosphere and/or medium pH. Some basic parameters for equine embryo culture are not yet established. We found that blastocyst development after intracytoplasmic sperm injection was not affected by incubator temperature between 37.2°C and 38.2°C, but was reduced under high CO2 tension (7%), associated with lower medium pH (7.29), during cleavage stage culture. Haemoperitoneum is a rarely reported but life-threatening complication of a multitude of disease processes that can affect horses. This report describes an unusual case of haemoperitoneum in a pregnant mare attributed to a unilateral ovarian haematoma during early gestation. The mare was treated with supportive care and discharged 8 days after initial presentation. Following discharge, the mare maintained her pregnancy to term and delivered a live colt at 321 days of gestation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vaginal prolapse is a condition characterised by excessive accumulation of mucosal oedema and protrusion of hyperplastic tissue through the vulva. It has been reported in ruminants and canines, but has not been characterised in felines. This report describes the history, clinical signs and treatment of a pregnant Maine coon cat with a Type III vaginal prolapse diagnosed approximately 54 days after the first day of mating. Prior to queening, the prolapse was reduced and retained using a vulvar cruciate suture. Due to the risk of dystocia and recurrence, a caesarean section with ovariohysterectomy was performed. Postoperatively, a stay suture was maintained in the vulva for 2 weeks, resulting in permanent reduction of the vaginal prolapse. To the authors' knowledge, this case represents the first report of the successful management of vaginal prolapse in a pregnant cat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Effective case management of malaria requires prompt diagnosis and treatment within 24 hours. Home-based management of malaria (HMM) improves access to treatment for populations with limited access to health facilities. In Senegal, an HMM pilot study in 2008 demonstrated the feasibility of integrated use of RDTs and ACT in remote villages by volunteer Home Care Providers (HCP). Scale-up of the strategy began in 2009, reaching 408 villages in 2009 and 861 villages in 2010. This paper reports the results of the scale-up in the targeted communities and the impact of the strategy on malaria in the formal health sector. Methods Data reported by the HCPs were used to assess their performance in 2009 and 2010, while routine malaria morbidity and mortality data were used to assess the impact of the HMM programme. Two high transmission regions where HMM was not implemented until 2010 were used as a comparison. Results and discussion From July 2009 through May 2010, 12582 suspected cases were managed by HCPs, 93% (11672) of whom were tested with an RDT. Among those tested, 37% (4270) had a positive RDT, 97% (4126) of whom were reported treated and cured. Home care providers referred 6871 patients to health posts for management: 6486 with a negative RDT, 119 infants Conclusion Home-based management of malaria including diagnosis with RDT and treatment based on test results is a promising strategy to improve the access of remote populations to prompt and effective management of uncomplicated malaria and to decrease mortality due to malaria. When scaled-up to serve remote village communities in the regions of Senegal with the highest malaria prevalence, home care providers demonstrated excellent adherence to guidelines, potentially contributing to a decrease in hospital deaths attributed to malaria.
