18. Mid-infrared surface plasmon polariton chemical sensing on fiber-coupled ITO coated glass

Abstract

A novel fiber-coupled ITO coated glass slide sensor for performing surface plasmon polariton chemical monitoring in the 3.5 um mid-IR range is reported. Efficient mid-IR fiber coupling is achieved with 3D laser written waveguides, and the coupling of glass waveguide modes to ITO SPPs is driven by the varying phase matching conditions of different aqueous analytes across the anomalous dispersion range determined by their molecular fingerprints. By means of using both a mid-IR fiber supercontinuum source and a diode laser the excitation of SPPs is demonstrated. The efficient optical monitoring of mid-IR SPPs in smart glass could have a broad range of applications in biological and chemical sensing.

Abstract

Body fluids can potentially indicate the presence of non-small cancer cells. Studying these fluids is an emerging field that could be crucial for cancer detection and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Meanwhile, the examination of fluids on a microscopic level is part of the field of microfluidics. This study focuses on the development of a total analysis system that consists of various interconnected structures that are designed to mix, classify, concentrate, and isolate particles in fluids that mimic the behavior of cancer and normal cells. Using the COMSOL Multiphysics software, the device's performance was optimized to use a pressure input of 35 kPa for water or serum and 29.4 kPa for a mixture of liquid and serum samples, which are the optimal pressure inputs. The numerical models were validated by experiments using two types of polystyrene particles, with diameters of 5 and 20 mu m. Moreover, the developed system was applied to monitor the behavior of red blood cells. The microfluidic chip is capable of addressing several challenges through visual detections, including mixing tests of two fluids with similar densities, proper particle size classification using Dean flow fractionation, and single-step recovery of large, labeled particles. Finally, the collected particles were examined using an environmental scanning electron microscope to determine their size, and the results demonstrated that successful size separation was achieved, with particles around 20 mu m completely separated from the smaller ones.

Abstract

Massive gene expression analyses are widely used to find differentially expressed genes under specific conditions. The results of these experiments are often available in public databases that are undergoing a growth similar to that of molecular sequence databases in the past. This now allows novel secondary computational tools to emerge that use such information to gain new knowledge. If several genes have a similar expression profile across heterogeneous transcriptomics experiments, they could be functionally related. These associations are usually useful for the annotation of uncharacterized genes. In addition, the search for genes with opposite expression profiles is useful for finding negative regulators and proposing inhibitory compounds in drug repurposing projects. Here we present a new web application, Automatic and Serial Analysis of CO-expression (ASACO), which has the potential to discover positive and negative correlator genes to a given query gene, based on thousands of public transcriptomics experiments. In addition, examples of use are presented, comparing with previous contrasted knowledge. The results obtained propose ASACO as a useful tool to improve knowledge about genes associated with human diseases and noncoding genes. ASACO is available at http://www.bioinfocabd.upo.es/asaco/.
