Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and high toxicity. This study aimed to investigate changes in serum metabolites following exposure to PCDD/Fs and to reveal a novel pathogenesis of PCDD/Fs. Serum samples were collected from 75 residents living near a municipal solid waste incinerator in China to analyse the relationship between PCDD/Fs and serum metabolic components. The serum level in the low-exposure group [19.07 (13.44-23.89) pg-TEQ/L] was significantly lower than that in the high-exposure group [115.60 (52.28-592.65) pg-TEQ/L]. Non-targeted metabolomic studies based on liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry have been applied to the metabolomic analysis of serum. Thirty-seven metabolites with significant differences among the different groups were identified as biomarkers. Pathway analysis revealed that high dioxin exposure perturbed various biological processes, including glycerol phospholipid metabolism and the interconversion of pentose and glucuronate. The results of a population health survey showed that the serum dioxin concentration in patients with diabetes was significantly higher than that in the control population. Biomass plays a pivotal role in global energy production, with a significant share allocated for industrial heat and power generation. The combustion of biomass generates biomass ash, which is widely utilized as a fertiliser. However, concerns arise regarding the presence of dioxins in biomass ash, which may limit its continued use. Dioxins are toxic compounds listed under the Stockholm Convention due to their persistence and detrimental effects on human health and the environment. This study investigates the dioxin content in biomass ashes produced in various combustion plants with a capacity of 1-50MWth in Estonia, where biomass is widely used for heating and power production. The research encompassed samples from nine biomass combustion plants with varying technical parameters considering both bottom and fly ash. Dioxin concentrations were determined for 7 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), 10 polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and 12 dioxin-like PCBs (PCBs). The results indicate that dioxin TEQ content in all samples was well below the European Union's (EU) POP Regulation limit of 5 µg TEQ/kg, with most values being at least tenfold lower. However, some samples failed to meet the EU Fertilising Products Regulation's threshold of 20 ng TEQ/kg. Notably, fly ash exhibited higher dioxin concentrations than bottom ash. While PCBs were in significant concentrations, PCDDs dominated the overall dioxin TEQ content. This study provides essential insights into the dioxin content in biomass ash and its correlation with current EU regulatory limits. Polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins (PCDDs), comprising 75 congeners, have gained considerable attention from the general public and the scientific community owing to their high toxic potential. The base-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCDDs is crucial for the assessment of their environmental persistence. Nonetheless, owing to the substantial number of congeners and low hydrolysis rates of PCDDs, conducting hydrolysis experiments proves to be exceedingly time-consuming and financially burdensome. Herein, density functional theory and transition state theory were employed to predict the base-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCDDs in aquatic environments. Findings reveal that PCDDs undergo base-catalyzed hydrolysis in aquatic environments with two competing pathways: prevailing dioxin ring-opening and reduced reactivity in the hydrolytic dechlorination pathway. The resultant minor products include hydroxylated PCDDs, which exhibit thermodynamic stability surpassing that of the principal product, chlorinated hydroxydiphenyl ethers. The half-lives (ranging from 17.10 to 1.33 × 10 10 h at pH = 8) associated with the base-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCDDs dissolved in water were shorter compared to those within the water-sediment environmental system. This observation implies that hydroxide ions can protect aquatic environments from PCDD contamination. Notably, this study represents the first attempt to predict the base-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCDDs by using quantum chemical methods.

Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) are a form of emerging pollutant that has attracted great attention due to their structural resemblance to dioxins, which cast detrimental influence on the ecosystem and human health. This review shows the current status of research on PCDTs, focusing on their environmental occurrence, physicochemical properties, environmental behavior, and toxicity. Studies have suggested that the steps leading to the formation of PCDTs resemble those generating polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), indicating their probable origin from the same sources. Furthermore, they may undergo a dechlorination process as a result of their photodegradation in the environment and metabolic reaction occurring within organisms, which could result in the conversion of these substances into additional pollutants like dibenzothiophene. PCDTs exist widely in the environmental media and have high logK OW values (>4.0), indicating their tendency to bioaccumulate. Moreover, the prediction results of EPI (Estimation Program Interface) Suite demonstrated a strong accumulation capacity for tetra-CDTs in fish compared to other chlorinated PCDTs. The biotransformation half-life of PCDTs would prolong with an increasing number of substituted Cl atoms in fish. A limited number of studies have also suggested that PCDTs can cause damage to the liver and immune system in living organisms, and the toxicity of PCDTs depends on the number and position of substituted Cl atoms. Dioxins (PCDD/PCDF) are toxic compounds that are ubiquitous in the environment; although present in low concentrations, they are persistent and highly toxic and they bioaccumulate in food chains. Therefore, it is very important that feed is free of these types of contaminants, because otherwise they can become a source that can negatively affect animal health and the safety of food of animal origin. The aim of the study was to comprehensively assess the concentrations of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a variety of feed materials available on the Polish market. In addition, characteristic profiles of congeners for given categories of feeds were investigated and defined. Approximately 95 % of the 523 samples of various feed materials tested over seven years (2013-2018 and 2022) met the requirements of European Union feed law (Commission Regulation 277/2012/EU). The highest average PCDD/PCDF/dl-PCB concentrations were found in fish oils and meal and were respectively 1.17 ± 0.78 and 5.51 ± 4.51 ng WHO-TEQ/kg of feed at 12 % moisture. Median and background level concentrations of PCDD/PCDFs, dl-PCBs, PCDD/PCDF/dl-PCBs, and ndl-PCBs were significantly lower than their average concentrations for each individual feed material category. Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a "bottleneck" for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO 2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO 2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO 2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V 5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. Torrefaction constitutes one of the promising technologies for the management of waste biomass and the production of high-carbon products for combustion, gasification, adsorption of pollutants or soil treatment. Unfortunately, waste biomass may be contaminated with toxic persistent organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF) and dioxin-like biphenyls (dl-PCB). Literature does not provide consistent measurements on how the low-temperature thermochemical processing, such as torrefaction, affects the toxicity of biomass. This contribution assesses how a torrefaction treatment, conducted at 200 °C, modifies the toxicity due to PCDD/PCDF/dl-PCB in biomass. We deploy the XDS-CALUX biotest on five types of waste biomass (sewage sludge, tree bark, cattle manure, spent coffee ground, common reed), before and after treatment. The content of total dioxin- & biphenyl fraction compounds in the raw biomass, investigated in this study, varies from 0.14 to 3.67 pg BEQ·g -1 d.m. , and in the torrefied biomass between 0.17 and 6.00 pg BEQ·g -1 d.m. ; BEQ stands for bioanalytical equivalent. This increase is statistically insignificant at p = 0.05, taking into account all types of examined biomass. This proves that low-temperature torrefaction cannot detoxify biomass, i.e., chars, produced from biomass characterized by elevated concentration of PCDD/PCDF/dl-PCB, will reflect the contamination of the feedstocks. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were assessed in coastal sediments from industrial bays in South Korea to evaluate the pollution levels and their environmental impact. The mean sediment concentrations of Σ 17 PCDD/Fs, Σ 18 PCBs, and Σ 15 PCNs were 198 ± 140, 3427 ± 7037, and 85 ± 336 pg/g dw, respectively. Generally, pollutant concentrations in the inner bay were higher than those in the outer bay, indicating the influence of industrial emissions and harbor activities. The primary sources were identified as steel manufacturing and wastewater treatment plants for PCDD/Fs, harbor and shipbuilding activities for PCBs, and combustion-related sources for PCNs. Notably, PCDD/F concentrations exceeded sediment guideline values. The combined effects of PCDD/Fs and PCBs demonstrated adverse impacts on aquatic organisms. Pyrolysis is considered a highly practical, cost-effective, and environment-friendly technology for waste tires disposal. In this study, pyrolysis processes of waste tires were conducted in a pilot scale furnace feeding at 30 kg/h. The properties of pyrolytic products and the distribution patterns of pollutants generated in different operating stages (start-up, steady, and shut-down) were investigated. The pyrolytic gas in the steady state had a high caloric value of 10799 kJ/Nm 3 , valuable as heating source for pyrolysis. The elements of sulfur and zinc were effectively fixed as ZnS in the pyrolytic carbon. The basic properties of pyrolytic oil were in line with commercial diesel oil except for the lower flash point. Heavy metals were mainly concentrated in the pyrolytic carbon, with slightly higher concentrations in the steady state. Moreover, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were mainly concentrated in the pyrolytic oil, with predominated low-ring PAHs and high chlorinated PCDD/Fs. The concentrations of PAHs and PCDD/Fs in the gas phase were higher during the start-up stage due to the memory effect, whereas were effectively reduced during the steady stage. The concentration of PAHs in the solid phase was highest during the furnace start-up and lowest in the shut-down stage. In contrast to PAHs, the PCDD/Fs in the solid phase reached their highest concentration during the shut-down stage, which was mainly affected by temperature. Dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) are anthropogenic pollutants that persist in the environment for long years, bioaccumulating in food & contaminating humans. In pregnancy, they can transfer through the placenta and reach the fetus, which negatively affects fetal growth. They can also reach newborns through breastfeeding. In this study, we focused on this critical subpopulation and identified the presence of PCDD/Fs among pregnant women in breast milk (n = 41) and cord serum (n = 49); we assessed the correlation between different matrices, evaluated the predictors and associations with newborn anthropometric measurements. Over 70.7 % of PCDD/Fs were detected in breast milk and 46.9-55.1 % in cord serum. Cord/maternal serum and breast milk to maternal serum ratios were > 1 with a significant positive Spearman correlation (0.669-0.729). Breast milk & maternal serum PCDD/Fs were associated inversely with age and positively with red meat intake. Cord serum PCDD/Fs were inversely associated with pre-pregnancy weight loss and passive smoking. Parity and gestational weight gain showed positive associations with Z-scores at birth. Biomass pyrolysis is the anoxic thermal conversion of biomass into a carbon rich, porous solid, often called biochar. This could be a better waste management alternative for contaminated organic wastes than incineration, due to the useful properties of biochar and potential for carbon sequestration. There are, however, concerns about the potential formation/destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). Six organic wastes, including digested sewage sludges, wood wastes, and food waste reject, were pyrolyzed (500-800°C) in a full-scale relevant unit (1-5 kg biochar hr -1 ). Removal efficiencies for PCBs and PCDD/Fs were > 99% in the produced biochars. Biochar PAH-content (2.7-118 mgkg -1 ) was not significantly correlated to feedstock or temperature. PAHs (2563-8285 mgkg -1 ), PCBs (22-113 µgkg -1 ), and PCDD/Fs (1.8-50 ngTEQ kg -1 ) accumulated in the pyrolysis condensate, making this a hazardous waste best handled as a fuel for high temperature combustion. Emission concentrations for PAHs (0.22-421 µgNm -3 ) and PCDD/Fs (≤2.7 pgTEQ Nm -3 ) were mainly associated with particles and were below the European Union's waste incineration thresholds. Emission factors ranged from 0.0002 to 78 mg tonne -1 biochar for PAHs and 0.002-0.45 µgTEQ tonne -1 biochar for PCDD/Fs. Drug consumption has grown exponentially in recent decades, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to their presence in various water sources. In this way, degradation technologies for pollutants, such as electrochemical oxidation (ELOX), have become crucial to safeguard the quality of natural resources. This study has as its starting point a previous research, which demonstrated the efficacy of ELOX in the removal of COVID-19 related-drugs, such as dexamethasone (DEX), paracetamol (PAR), amoxicillin (AMX), and sertraline (STR), using the electrolytes NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 . The present research aims to study the potential risks associated with the generation of toxic by-products, during the ELOX of cited drugs, specifically focusing on the highly chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Dioxins and furans can be formed potentially in electrochemical systems from precursor molecules or non-precursor molecules in chloride medium. First, the degradation of the parent compounds was found to be complete. At this point, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to identify and analyse the by-products formed during the degradation process; precursors of PCDD/Fs, such as chlorophenols or hydroquinones were identified. Additionally, in continuation of the previous study, PCDD/Fs congeners were investigated, revealing elevated concentrations; the highest concentration obtained was for the congener 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF (234.6 pg L -1 in NaCl) during degradation of the AMX. Finally, an assessment of the toxicity based on TEQ values was conducted, with DEX exhibiting the highest concentration among all compounds: 30.1 pg L -1 for NaCl medium. Catalytic destruction of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) combined with dust removal technique has attracted much attention, yet the application in the solid waste incineration air pollution control process is still lacking due to the complex flue gas atmosphere. In this work, the Mn-Ce-Co-O x catalyst-coated polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) filter fiber with efficient dust removal and low-temperature polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) destruction has been prepared with a redox-precipitation method. The catalyst was uniformly grown around the PPS fiber with appropriate catalyst loading. The effects of several key operating parameters (e.g., reaction temperature, catalyst loading amount, and filtration velocity) on the catalytic efficiency were comprehensively investigated. The results show that the Mn-Ce-Co-O x /PPS has a decomposition yield of 78.0% in PCDD/Fs and 96% in nitric oxide (NO) conversion at 200 °C. The poisoned catalytic filter exhibits a removal efficiency of 88.6% for PCDD/Fs. In addition, the catalytic filter can completely reject particles smaller than 1.0 μm with a low filtration resistance. Therefore, this efficient and energy-conserving catalytic filter shows promising applications in flue gas pollution treatments., (© 2023. Understanding the transfer of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from oral exposure into cow's milk is not purely an experimental endeavour, as it has produced a large corpus of theoretical work. This work consists of a variety of predictive toxicokinetic models in the realms of health and environmental risk assessment and risk management. Their purpose is to provide mathematical predictive tools to organise and integrate knowledge on the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion processes. Toxicokinetic models are based on more than 50 years of transfer studies summarised in part I of this review series. Here in part II, several of these models are described and systematically classified with a focus on their applicability to risk analysis as well as their limitations. This part of the review highlights the opportunities and challenges along the way towards accurate, congener-specific predictive models applicable to changing animal breeds and husbandry conditions.

The amount of medical waste generated has increased enormously since the COVID-19 outbreak. An incineration process is the main method that is usually used to treat this waste, causing an increase in both medical waste bottom ash (MWBA) and medical waste fly ash (MWFA). In this work, the physical and chemical characteristics of MWFA and MWBA were reviewed. This ash contains high levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and heavy metals. Furthermore, medical waste ash appears to have high leachability in the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) test and the European standard test (EN 12457). Owing to its toxicity, medical ash can be treated using various methods prior to disposal based on the covered review. These techniques include chemical, supercritical fluid, cement-based, melting, microwave, and mechanochemical techniques. The shortcomings of some of these treatment methods have been identified, such as the emission of high levels of chlorine from the melting technique, limited applications of the flotation method on the industrial scale, long-term stability of leachate treated by cement-based methods that have not been confirmed yet, and high energy consumption in the supercritical technique. This review also covers possible applications of medical waste ash in cement production, agriculture, and road construction.

The biodegradation treatment of dioxins has long been of interest due to its good ecological and economic effects. In this study, the biodegradability of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) were investigated by constructing machine learning and multiple linear regression models. The maximum chlorine atomic charge (q Hirshfeld Cl + ), which characterizes the biodegradation ability of PCDDs, was used as the response value. The random forest model was used to rank the importance on the 1471 descriptors of PCDDs, and the BCUTp-1 h, Q XZ , JGI4, ATSC8c, VE3_Dt, topoShape, and maxwHBa were screened as the important descriptors by Pearson's correlation coefficient method. A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was constructed to predict the biodegradability of PCDDs. In addition, the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and random forest model were also constructed and proved the good predictability of QSAR model. The biodegradability of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) can also be predicted by the constructed three models from a certain level after adjusting some model parameters, which further proved the versatility of the models. Besides, the sensitivity analysis of the QSAR model and a 3D-QSAR model was developed to investigate the biodegradability mechanisms of PCDDs. Results showed that the descriptors BCUTp-1 h, JGI4, and maxwHBa were the key descriptors in the biodegradability effect by the sensitivity analysis of the QSAR model. Coupled with the results of PCDDs biodegradability 3D-QSAR model, BCUTp-1 h, JGI4, and maxwHBa were confirmed as the main descriptors that affect the biodegradability of dioxins. Dioxins, such as polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), are among the most toxic unintentionally produced persistent organic pollutants, and their emission is of great concern. Herein, we discovered abundant dioxin formation in soil and various organic carbon-containing matrices after digestion with aqua regia. Σ 17 PCDD/Fs concentrations were in the range of 66.6-142,834 pg/g dw (5.6-17,021 pg WHO 2005 -TEQ/g dw) in 19 soil samples after digestion with aqua regia for 6 h. Σ 17 PCDD/Fs concentration was significantly and positively correlated with soil organic carbon content ( R 2 = 0.89; p < 0.01). Compared with cellulose and lignin, humic acid served as an important organic matter component that was converted to PCDD/Fs during soil digestion. Strong oxidation and production of reactive chlorine by aqua regia may be the key factors in the formation of PCDD/Fs. The yearly emission of PCDD/Fs due to digestion with strong acids by the inspection and testing industry was estimated to be 83.8 g TEQ in China in 2021 based on the highest level, which was ∼0.9% of the total dioxin inventory in China. Great attention should be paid to unexpected dioxin formation during digestion processes considering the potential risk of release from laboratories and enterprises.

An expert meeting was organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1997 to streamline assessments of risk posed by mixtures of dioxin-like chemicals (DLCs) through development of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) equivalency factors (TEFs) for mammals, birds, and fishes. No reevaluation has been performed for fish TEFs. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to reevaluate the TEFs for fishes based on an updated database of relative potencies (RePs) for DLCs. Selection criteria consistent with the WHO meeting resulted in 53 RePs across 14 species of fish ultimately being considered. Of these RePs, 70% were not available at the time of the WHO meeting. These RePs were used to develop updated TEFs for fishes based on a similar decision process as used at the WHO meeting. The updated TEF for 16 DLCs was greater than the WHO TEF, but only four differed by more than an order of magnitude. Measured concentrations of DLCs in four environmental samples were used to compare 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents (TEQs) calculated using the WHO TEFs relative to the updated TEFs. The TEQs for none of these environmental samples differed by more than an order of magnitude. Therefore, present knowledge supports that the WHO TEFs are suitable potency estimates for fishes. However, the updated TEFs pull from a larger database with a greater breadth of data and as a result offer greater confidence relative to the WHO TEFs. Risk assessors will have different criteria in the selection of TEFs, and the updated TEFs are not meant to immediately replace the formal WHO TEFs; but those who value a larger database and increased confidence in TEQs could consider using the updated TEFs. As a group of pollutants listed in the Stockholm Convention, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) should be eliminated and their releases should be controlled. For this purpose, a complete PCB emission inventory is urgently required. Current unintentional releases of PCB were dominantly focused on waste incineration and non-ferrous metal production industries. The formation of PCB in chlorinated chemical manufacturing processes is poorly understood. In this study, occurrences and inventory of dioxin-like PCB (dl-PCB) in three typical chemical manufacturing processes, including chlorobenzene and chloroethylene production processes, were investigated. The bottom residues, which were high boiling point by-products after rectification tower, contained higher concentration of PCB than other stage samples in monochlorobenzene production and trichloroethylene production processes. The PCB concentrations were as high as 1.58 ng/mL and 152.87 ng/mL, respectively, which should be further concerned. The toxic equivalent quantities (TEQ) of dl-PCB in monochlorobenzene, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene products were 0.25 μg TEQ/t, 1.14 μg TEQ/t, and 5.23 μg TEQ/t, respectively. The mass concentration and TEQ of dl-PCB determined in this research can be used for the further development of dl-PCB emission inventory from these chemical manufacturing industries. In addition, temporal and spatial trends of PCB releases from typical chemical manufacturing processes from 1952 to 2018 in China were clarified. The releases increased rapidly in the latest two decades and presented an expansion tendency from the southeast coastal areas to northern and central areas. Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) eggs have been identified as useful indicators for biomonitoring the environmental pollution in China. In this study, we investigated thirty eggs of black-crowned night heron collected from the upper Yangtze River (Changjiang) Basin, Southwest China, for the occurrence of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Our results showed a general presence of POPs in night heron eggs with OCPs being the dominant contaminants, having a geometric mean concentration of 22.2 ng g -1 wet weight (ww), followed by PCBs (1.36 ng g -1 ww), PBDEs (0.215 ng g -1 ww), and PCDD/Fs (23.0 pg g -1 ww). The concentration levels were found to be significantly higher in night heron eggs than in poultry eggs by one or two magnitude orders. Among OCP congeners, p,p'-DDE was found to be predominant in night heron eggs, with a geometric mean concentration of 15.1 ng g -1 ww. Furthermore, species-specific congener patterns in eggs suggested similar or different sources for different POPs, possibly associated with contaminated soil and parental dietary sources. Additionally, estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were used to evaluate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk associated with consumption of bird eggs. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been measured using passive air samplers (PASs) over two years (2017-2018) in the city of Tunis within the framework of the UNEP/GEF GMP2 projects to support Stockholm Convention implementation. Several POPs, although banned for a long time from Tunisia, were registered in relatively high amounts in the atmospheric compartment. The most unexpected compound is hexachlorobenzene (HCB), with concentrations ranging from 5.2 ng/PUF to 16 ng/PUF. Furthermore, the current results seem to confirm the presence of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its transformation products and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) at relatively high concentrations (4.6 ng/PUF to 9.4 ng/PUF and 2.7 ng/PUF to 5.1 ng/PUF, respectively), followed by hexabromocyclododecane (HCBD), which varies from 1.5 ng/PUF to 7.7 ng/PUF. Nondioxin-like PCB (ndl-PCB) concentrations in Tunis were very high (62.0 ng/PUF to 419.3 ng/PUF), higher than those in other African countries participating in this project. Uncontrolled combustion seems to be one of the most important sources of the emanation of dioxin compounds dl-PCBs and Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins PCDD/polychlorinated dibenzofurans PCDF. Toxic equivalents (TEQs) ranged from 4.1 pg WHO-TEQ/PUF to 6.4 pg WHO-TEQ/PUF. The perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) and congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) show relatively low amounts that remain below the African continent average. The PFAS pattern suggests a local source rather than long-range transport. These results constitute the first exhaustive work capable of providing an overview of the levels of POPs in the air in Tunis. Background: Peripubertal concentrations of serum dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have demonstrated associations with altered age of pubertal onset and sexual maturity in boys, but associations with pubertal progression have received less attention., Methods: The Russian Children's Study is a prospective cohort of 516 boys enrolled in 2003-2005 at age 8 or 9 and followed annually up to 19 years of age. Serum concentrations of dioxin-like toxic equivalents (TEQs), polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and non-dioxin-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs) and whole blood lead levels (BLLs) were quantified from blood samples collected at study entry (age 8-9). Testicular volume (TV) was assessed annually using a Prader orchidometer. Pubertal trajectories were identified by applying Group-Based Trajectory Models (GBTMs) to TV measured from ages 8-19. Associations of peripubertal serum TEQs, PCDDs, PCDFs, and NDL-PCBs with specific progression trajectories were modeled using multinomial logistic regression, adjusting for each boy's birthweight, and for BLL, body mass index and nutritional factors at study entry., Results: Among 489 eligible boys with available exposure measures, we identified three pubertal trajectories using GBTMs: slower (34% of boys), moderate (48%) and faster (18%). Boys with higher peripubertal serum TEQs had higher adjusted odds of being in the moderate versus faster trajectory (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.79, 95% CI 1.01, 3.13) and the slower versus faster trajectory (aOR 1.52, 95% CI 0.82, 2.78) per 1 log unit increase in serum TEQs. Boys with higher peripubertal serum PCDFs had higher adjusted odds of being in the moderate compared to the faster trajectory (aOR 1.92, 95% CI 1.20, 3.03) and of being in the slower versus the faster trajectory (aOR 1.42, 95% CI 0.91, 2.33) per 1 log unit increase. Boys with higher NDL-PCBs had higher adjusted odds of being in the faster trajectory versus the moderate (aOR 2.56, 95% CI 0.91-7.20) or slower (aOR 3.31, 95% CI 1.07, 10.25) trajectory. Boys with higher blood lead levels also had higher adjusted odds of being in the slower trajectory of pubertal progression, compared to either the faster (aOR 1.47, 95% CI 0.89, 2.44) or moderate (aOR 1.20, 95% CI 0.83, 1.75) trajectories, per 1 log unit increase in BLL, although these associations did not attain statistical significance., Conclusion: Boys' peripubertal exposure to dioxins and certain PCBs may alter pubertal progression., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: None
