Abstract: A package for pattern recognition and PID by COMPASS RICH-1 has been developed and used for the analysis of COMPASS data collected in the years 2002 to 2004, and 2006-2007 with the upgraded RICH-1 photon detectors. It has allowed the full characterization of the detector in the starting version and in the upgraded one, as well as the PID for physics results. Abstract: THGEMs (THick GEMs) are electron multipliers derived from the GEM design, with scaled geometrical parameters and manufactured using standard PCB production technology. Coupled to Cesium Iodide photo converting layer they are promising candidates as detectors for future Cherenkov Imaging Counters. More than 30 THGEMs, different in geometry and production process, have been characterized in order to optimize their performance for RICH applications. The photoelectron extraction and collection efficiencies have been studied for several gas mixtures. Encouraging results have also been obtained from the tests with multilayer THGEMs used either for ionizing particles or UV light detection. This paper presents the recent developments of these studies. © Società Italiana di Fisica.

Abstract: Particle identification at high rates is an important challenge for many current and future high-energy physics experiments. The upgrade of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector requires a new technique for Cherenkov photon detection at count rates of several $10^6$ per channel in the central detector region, and a read-out system allowing for trigger rates of up to 100 kHz. To cope with these requirements, the photon detectors in the central region have been replaced with the detection system described in this paper. In the peripheral regions, the existing multi-wire proportional chambers with CsI photocathode are now read out via a new system employing APV pre-amplifiers and flash ADC chips. The new detection system consists of multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMT) and fast read-out electronics based on the MAD4 discriminator and the F1-TDC chip. The RICH-1 is in operation in its upgraded version for the 2006 CERN SPS run. 21. In-Line Metrology Sensitivity Analysis on Multiwire Sliced Wafers

Abstract: 27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1010-1013, In this paper we studied the TTV (Total Thickness Variation) dependence on different metrology setups. Typical wafers cut by multi-wire saw show maximum thickness on one edge and minimum thickness on the opposite one. TTV is mainly due to the thickness of the 4 wafer edges, hence sensor locations and edge exclusions are decisive in TTV measurements. In this article we present a comparison of different TTV values measured by sensors located in different positions relative to the lateral edges of the wafer with the choice of top and bottom edges exclusion matching the lateral distance. The measurements have been carried on utilizing the same lot of wafers. The result is highlighting the need to have sensors positioned exactly at the same distance with respect to the lateral wafers edges and also the need to set the same top and bottom edge exclusion in order to compare TTV measurements from different systems.

22. Correlation of Wafer Surface Defects with Wire Sawing Parameters

Abstract: 27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 957-959, The surface quality of silicon wafers cut by multi-wire saw must be controlled in order to reduce the breakage risk during the process as well as to improve the final solar cell efficiency. In addition, investigating the wafer surface can also provide useful information for improving the wire-sawing process. In this paper, the experience with running wafer inspection lines and a wire sawing test lab will be described. The objective is to demonstrate the correlation of the wafer surface defects with the wire saw parameters, as well as to stimulate discussion on the use of wafer inspection systems for wire-saw process improvements. A database with more than 200 different cutting conditions was investigated. Certain types of surface defects in this investigation were found to be strongly related to the cut parameters variations during the cut. Building up a centralized system to monitor several wire saw machine parameters and the corresponding wafer inspection data contributed to manage the operating status of the machines as well as to improve the cutting process, which can eventually lead to cutting yield improvements and wafering cost reductions.

Abstract: This letter reports the experimental evidence of a 2.3 eV blue shift of the plasmon loss lines observed in the x-ray photoelectron spectra of an ultrathin Si layer equivalent to 1.5 X 10(15) at./cm(2) deposited onto a randomly oriented Al2O3 Single crystal. The plasmon line shifts, which is roughly proportional to the deposited Si(mass)(-2/3), are attributed to quantum confinement effects in agreement with electron energy loss measurements performed on nanosized Si particles.

Abstract: The central region of COMPASS RICH-1 has been equipped with a new photon detection system based on MultiAnode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT). The Cherenkov photons are focused by an array of 576 fused silica telescopes onto 576 MAPMTs. The quality and positioning of all optical components have been tested by Hartmann method. The validation procedures are described. The quality of the optical concentrators was checked and alignment corrections were made. The upgraded detector showed excellent performances during 2006 data taking.

Abstract: A fast photon detection system has been built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, the large size gaseous RICH detector in use at the COMPASS Experiment at the CERN SPS since 2001. The photon detectors of the central region have been replaced by a new system based on multi-anode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and a fast readout electronics system, while in the outer region the existing MWPCs with CsI photocathodes have been equipped with a new readout system, based on the APV chip. RICH-1 has been successfully operated in its upgraded version during the 2006 run. We report on the upgrade design and construction, and on the preliminary characterization of the upgraded RICH-1 performances: at saturation about 60 photons per ring have routinely been obtained and the background level has drastically been reduced thanks to the good time resolution of the new system, leading to a 2 σ π –K separation above 55 GeV/c.

Abstract: In this work, a sensor formed by clustering three ad-hoc shaped piezoelectric patches is proposed for guided waves direction of arrival (DoA) estimation in laminate composite and metallic structures. The irregular shaping of the transducer electrodes allows to simplify the signal processing procedures which are necessary to detect the wave DoA. The cluster is conceived so that there is a linear dependence between the difference in time of arrival (DToA) of the wavefront at two of the sensor patches and the DoA of the wavefront itself. The third piezoelectric patch is shaped so that the estimation of the DoA from the DToA can be performed without knowing the actual wave velocity. The transducer performance in terms of DoA estimation accuracy are evaluated through numerical simulations, in which the plate response to a point source is evaluated in the frequency domain using the Green's function approach. Results show that the standard deviation of the error in the estimation of the DoA is less than 2°. This device is meant as a basic building block for the development of passive sensor networks in smart structure applications.

This system has replaced the MWPCs with CsI photo-cathodes in the central region ( 1.3 m 2 , 25% of the total area) of the COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors and has successfully been operated during the data taking in 2006 and 2007. We report about the fast photon detection system design, construction and commissioning, in particular about the design optimization and the validation tests of the lens telescopes. Preliminary values for the increased performances of COMPASS RICH-1 after the upgrade are also presented.

Abstract: A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultipliers. Abstract: The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam. Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a RICH counter and both hadron and electromagnetic calorimeters. The setup has been successfully operated from 2002 onwards using a muon beam. Data with a hadron beam were also collected in 2004. Abstract: The COMPASS experiment at CERN provides hadron identification in a wide momentum range employing a large size gaseous Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH). The presence of large uncorrelated background in the COMPASS environment was limiting the efficiency of COMPASS RICH-1 in the very forward regime. A major upgrade of RICH-1 required a new technique for Cherenkov photon detection at count rates of several 106/s per channel in the central detector part, and a read-out system allowing for trigger rates of up to 100 kHz. To cope with these requirements, the photon detectors of the central region have been replaced with a fast photon detection system described here, while, in the peripheral regions, the existing multi-wire proportional chambers with CsI photo-cathodes have been equipped with a new read-out system based on APV preamplifiers and flash ADC chips. The new system consists of multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes, and fast read-out electronics based on the MAD4 amplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1 TDC chip. The project was completely designed and implemented in less than two years: The upgraded detector is in operation since the 2006 CERN SPS run. We present the photon detection design, constructive aspects and test studies to characterise the single photon response of the MAPMTs coupled to the read-out system as well as the detector performance based on the 2006 data.

Abstract: A major upgrade of the Cherenkov photon detection system of COMPASS RICH-1 has been performed and it has been in operation since the 2006 physics run. The inner part of the photon detector has been replaced by a different technology in order to measure Cherenkov photons at high photoelectron rates, up to several times 10 6 per second and per channel. Cherenkov photons from 200 to 750 nm are detected by 576 multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) with 16 channels each, coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast, high sensitivity and high time resolution electronics read-out. To guarantee an optimal performance of the complete system, parameters like dark current, gain, uniformity, relative quantum efficiency have been measured for a totality of more than 600 MAPMTs (about 10 000 channels) in a fully automated test-stand, developed for this purpose. The ideal working point for each individual pixel could be ascertained by these measurements. In 2006 the newly equipped detector exhibited an excellent performance: about 56 detected photons per ring at saturation and a time resolution of better than 1 ns. We report about the MAPMT characterisation and the quality control set-up, protocol and results.

Abstract: A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.

Abstract: The COMPASS experiment at the SPS accelerator at CERN uses a large scale Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) to identify pions, kaons and protons in a wide momentum range. For the data taking in 2006, the COMPASS RICH has been upgraded in the central photon detection area (25% of the surface) with a new technology to detect Cherenkov photons at very high count rates of several 10^6 per second and channel and a new dead-time free read-out system, which allows trigger rates up to 100 kHz. The Cherenkov photons are detected by an array of 576 visible and ultra-violet sensitive multi-anode photomultipliers with 16 channels each. Abstract: In the context of the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, we are developing a fast photodetection system for RICH counters, based on UV extended Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) and a custom, low dead-time electronic readout system. Photons are concentrated on the MAPMT photocathode by an optical system that preserves the position information. The ratio between the collection and the photosensitive surfaces is ∼7.5 in our design, larger than in previous applications. A new front-end electronics, based on a modified version of the MAD4 discriminator chip, is being realized to digitize the MAPMT signals. We report about the design of the photodetection system and of the associated electronic readout system, and on the preliminary test beam results.

Abstract: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the elderly, characterized by aching and morning stiffness in the cervical region, shoulders and pelvic girdles. A steroid treatment course of 6-24 months is often required, but, due to important side effects, it is troublesome if the PMR patient is also affected by diabetes mellitus (DM) and/or osteoporosis. Aim of our study is to test anti-TNF alpha treatment as a steroid sparing tool in PMR patients affected by DM or osteoporosis. In particular, we hypothesise that TNF alpha blockade can be useful not only in remission maintaining, but also in the induction of clinical remission without corticosteroids in this kind of patients. In a six months follow up, patients had clinical improvement, confirmed by physical medical examination, and a statistically significant reduction in ESR and CRP mean values. Anti-TNF alpha treatment was well tolerated by all patients. These preliminary data suggest than Infliximab can be useful in the treatment of PMR patients, not only for steroid sparing purposes, but also as first line therapy in PMR patients with severe comorbidity, such as diabetes mellitus or osteoporosis.
