This special survey comprises 21 review articles on the world's refractories industry and the major mineral raw materials used. In view of the overlapping nature of the refractories and foundry industries in terms of the minerals used the latter has been discussed where relevant. In this regard the chapters on chromite, olivine, silica sand, and zircon also include a discussion on foundry uses and markets. The zirconia market is made up of two distinct raw materials: natural zirconia in the form of baddeleyite and higher purity zirconia produced from zircon or in some cases baddeleyite. Phosphate Development Corp. (Foskor) and Palabora Mining, both producing from the Phalabolora complex in South Africa account for the total world production of baddeleyite of 12 000 tons/year. The major producers of manufactured zirconia, by precipitation or thermal dissociation from zircon, are the USA, UK, Japan and France; production was estimated to be 6-8 000 tonnes in 1984.
