Adoption by an alloparent of an offspring or a litter occurs in at least eight mammal orders, but is rare in marsupials, and was never confirmed in opossums. Here we report the first unequivocal and documented successful event of alloparental adoption of two distinct litters by a single captive female Southern Black-eared Opossum Didelphis aurita (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae). The female, still nursing her biological litter, accepted and nursed the two offered litters. All three litters were raised simultaneously, and the female cared for and displayed protective behaviour indistinctively of the biological or adopted pups. She was kept captive until released along with her biological litter, which was weaned and fled independently, and the two adoptive litters clinging on her back. This event sheds additional light on the little known social and maternal behaviour of opossums, suggesting it is possibly more complex than originally thought.

Erioscelis emarginata is a species of pollinator scarab beetle whose adults are predominantly associated with night-blooming aroid inflorescences (Araceae) of the Neotropical genus Thaumatophyllum, towards which they are attracted by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is assumed that olfactory preferences towards species-specific floral VOCs emitted by different plant hosts, as well as geographical segregation of natural populations of E. emarginata, might reinforce their reproductive isolation and differentiation, but external morphological dissimilarities between them are not evident. In the present work, body shapes of geographically isolated populations of E. emarginata associated with different species of Thaumatophyllum were compared using landmark-based geometric morphometrics. A total of 86 adult specimens of E. emarginata were analyzed, collected in inflorescences of Thaumatophyllum spp. at four locations in Brazil distant 333–912 km from one another. Eighteen landmarks and semi-landmarks were digitized to capture the shapes of the elytra and pronotum separately, and landmarks configurations were compared through Canonical Variates and pairwise Discriminant Function Analyses. Incluye contenido parcial de los autores Abstract.Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecologicalhealth and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carni-vores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide managementand conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropicalregion: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; andUrsidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropicalcarnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTRO-PICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data wereobtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organi-zations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including cameratrapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature(peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated inthis compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n=79,343; 79.7%) butalso includes non-detection data (n=20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data(n=43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute tomacroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspec-tives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distri-bution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans andsafeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combinedwith other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and relatedecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restric-tion for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of theinformation used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data.

Advances in our knowledge on the planet biodiversity have been largely dependent upon biological collections, and today they continue to be the cornerstone of several disciplines. Recently, the Brazilian Society of Mammalogists established the Mammal Collections Committee (CCM-SBMz) aiming to collect, organize and share information on the mammalian collections in Brazil, as well as support their management. As a first step, our goal here is to provide a diagnosis of mammal collections in Brazil, and the CCM-SBMz contacted 100 collections and successfully registered 71, distributed in all five Brazilian regions. These collections house ca. 372,200 specimens, with 60% of these concentrated in three institutions: MNRJ, MZUSP, and MPEG. The material more commonly deposited are voucher specimens. The database is completely digitized or in process of digitization in most collections, however, this information is not widely available online. The geographic coverage of the collections is mainly regional or national. In number of specimens, Rodentia is the most frequent order in the collections, followed by Carnivora. At the family level, Didelphidae, Cricetidae, and Felidae are the more frequent taxa. This study shows that Brazil houses an important volume of mammalian specimens. However, considering the country’s continental size and high mammal diversity, these numbers are still far from a sufficient representation of the Brazilian mammalian diversity. The results summarize the first efforts of the CCM-SBMz and the committee will continue monitoring the mammal collections in Brazil, as well as working to help the management and growth of collections.

Apresentamos uma breve introdução sobre a importância e uso de coleções científicas e um panorama geral dos artigos que fazem parte do número especial do Brazilian Journal of Mammalogy sobre coleções brasileiras de mamíferos. Os 19 artigos abrangem coleções distribuídas em oito estados da federação. Em sua maioria tratam de mamíferos viventes, sendo dois referentes a coleções paleontológicas. Dois artigos abordam ordens específicas de mamíferos e os demais apresentam dados para todas as ordens. Esperamos que este número represente uma contribuição significativa aos esforços para preservar as coleções científicas nacionais, fornecendo um panorama geral acerca das coleções e do uso atual e potencial dos espécimes nelas preservados.

We employed landmark-based 3D geometric morphometrics to assess cranial size and shape diversification in Trichechus manatus and T. inunguis to compare it with patterns among all manatee taxa (T. manatus latirostris, T. m. manatus, T. inunguis and T. senegalensis), and to analyse geographic variation within American manatee populations, using a sample of 189 skulls. Chromosome G- and C-banding techniques were performed in T. m. manatus from Brazil. All taxa were statistically discriminated by skull shape. Trichechus m. manatus and T. m. latirostris have larger skulls than T. inunguis. A morphological discontinuity was noted within T. m. manatus, with the Brazilian population south of the Amazon discriminated from the T. m. manatus Caribbean and T. m. latirostris USA populations. Specimens from Suriname and Guyana had a skull shape more similar to the one from the Caribbean population. The Brazil Antillean manatee population exhibited morphological differences similar in magnitude to those found between the Amazonian and African species. Additionally, structural chromosome differences were detected between that population (chromosome pair 4 is metacentric and 10 is submetacentric) and manatees from Puerto Rico and Florida. Based on such morphological discontinuity and chromosomal divergence, we hypothesize that the Amazon River mouth may be acting as a reproductive barrier for the T. m. manatus population in Brazil, thus indicating that its taxonomic status and conservation strategies need an urgent reassessment.

The Water Opossum, Chironectes minimus (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae), is the only semi-aquatic marsupial and can be easily identified for its uniquely patterned water resistant pelage and webbed hind-feet. The species is distributed along the Neotropical region (from Southern Mexico to Northwestern Argentina) and is currently divided on four subspecies (C.m. argyrodytes, C. m. panamensis, C. m. minimus, C. m. paraguensis), based on its geographical distribution. We evaluated the geographic variation in C. minimus, using traditional and geometric morphometrics techniques to capture the size and shape of the skull to identify differences between the populations that could relate to existing subpsecies or populations that and would merit particular taxonomic attention. We took 13 skull measurements, and digitized 37, 18, and 23 2D landmarks on the dorsal and lateral view of the cranium and on the lateral view of the mandible, respectively. The sample consisted on 135 individuals from 66 localities. Analyses of both datasets showed that the Southern South America and Northern Central America animals differ from the other populations. Geometric morphometrics shows on the three views that the Amazon animals differ from the others probably due to existing geographical barriers. These morphological differences among populations of the Water Opossum support the need for a proper phylogenetic assessment of these populations, in order to clarify their taxonomic status.

Usually considered a morphologically conservative group, didelphid marsupials present considerable variation in ecology and body size, some of which were shown to relate to morphological structures. Thus, changes on orbit morphology are likely and could be related to that variation. We calculated orbit orientation in 873 specimens of 16 Didelphidae genera yielding estimates of orbits convergence (their position relative to midsagittal line) and verticality (their position relative to frontal plane). We then compared similarities in these variables across taxa to ecological, morphological and phylogenetic data to evaluate the influencing factors on orbit orientation in didelphids. We found an inverse relation between convergence and verticality. Didelphids orbits have low verticality but are highly convergent, yet orbit orientation differs significantly between taxa, and that variation is related to morphological aspects of the cranium. Rostral variables are the only morphological features correlated with orbit orientation: increasing snout length yields more convergent orbits, whereas increase on snout breadth imply in more vertical orbits. Size and encephalization quotients are uncorrelated with orbit orientation. Among ecological data, diet showed significant correlation whereas locomotion is the factor that less affects the position of orbits. Phylogeny is uncorrelated to any orbital parameters measured. Ecological factors seemingly play a more important role on orbit orientation than previously expected, and differentiation on orbit orientation seems to be more functional than inherited. Thus, despite the apparent homogeneity on didelphid morphology, there is subtle morphological variability that may be directly related to feeding behavior.

Xenarthrans -anteaters, sloths, and armadillos- have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. Have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become. Akodon cursor and A. montensis are two morphologically cryptic species of Akodontini rodents, undistinguishable by external, skin or qualitative cranial characters. As they can only be separated based on the presence or absence of a gall bladder or by their karyotypes, previously collected individuals in scientific collections that had not these characters annotated cannot be used in any further study with certainty. The purpose of our study was to assess whether geometric morphometrics of the skull and mandible could identify and separate specimens of A. cursor from those of A. montensis. We used 74 adult specimens (48 - A. cursor e 25 - A. montensis) previously identified by their karyotypes, from Southeastern Brazil. We digitized 24, 22, 25, 13 landmarks on images of their skulls (in dorsal, ventral, and lateral views) and mandible, respectively. We assessed size variation (sexual dimorphism and species differences) through t-tests and ANOVAs of centroid sizes of each structure and view, and shape variation through Goodall tests, MANOVAs and Canonical Variants Analyses on Procrustes coordinates. Opossums of the genus Didelphis include the largest living species of New World marsupials. Although species of the genus have been morphometrically analyzed separately in several studies, size and shape variation within the genus has never been assessed with all species simultaneously. Here I provide the first comprehensive analysis of diversification in size and shape in the skull and mandible in the living species of Didelphis. I established a set of landmarks to capture the size and shape of the skull and mandible, using a sample of ca. 350 specimens, and compared species in size, and assessed the major axes of shape variation and differentiation through Principal Components and Canonical Variates analyses of the Procrustes coordinates of these landmarks. Additionally I assessed the effect of size on shape variation by regressing PC and CV scores onto centroid sizes. This analysis shows that almost all species can be distinguished in size, except for two species of white-eared opossums. Shape variation and diversification is also highly driven by size effects, as the most distinctive species in size, D. virginiana, is also the most distinctive species in shape, due to allometric shape changes. Major axes of shape variation are correlated with size, indicating that size plays a major role in the morphological diversification of the genus Didelphis, and these correlations are shared and conserved across species.

We analyzed the geographic variations in the shape and size of the cranium and mandible of two woolly opossums, Caluromys derbianus and Caluromys lanatus. Using geometric morphometrics we analyzed 202 specimens of C. derbianus and 123 specimens of C. lanatus, grouped in 7 and 9 populations, respectively. We found sexual dimorphism in shape variables only in the dorsal view of the cranium of Caluromys derbianus, which is not associated with geographical origin. We detected geographic variation in the size of the mandible in two populations (Nicaragua and Northern Panama), but no geographic variation in shape. The size of the cranium of C. lanatus varies significantly, with clinal variation in peri-Amazon populations, with a break between two populations, Bolivia and Paraguay. Shape analyses also revealed some separation between the Paraná population and all other populations. Our results suggest that the available name, Caluromys derbianus, should be maintained for all individuals throughout the geographic range of the species. The same is true for Caluromys lanatus, which can be separated into two distinct morphologic units, Caluromys lanatus ochropus, from the Amazon and Cerrado, and Caluromys lanatus lanatus, from the Atlantic forest.

Caluromysiops irrupta Sanborn, 1951 is a poorly known didelphid marsupial species, currently known from nine localities in south-central and western Amazonia. Only two records of C. irrupta were known from Brazil. Here we report the third record, in Rondônia state, northwestern Brazil. The specimen was sighted in a well-preserved forest area, in the Parque Estadual Guajará Mirim, Guajará Mirim, Rondônia. Although this record does not represent a distribution extension, it represents an additional record for a very poorly known species.

Local abundance results from the interaction between populational and environmental processes. The abundance of the species in a community is also one of the most basic descriptors of its structure. Despite its importance, information about species abundances is fragmentary, creating a knowledge gap about species abundances known as the Prestonian Shortfall. Here we present a comprehensive data set of small mammal abundance in the Atlantic Forest. Data were extracted from 114 published sources and from unpublished data collected by our research groups spanning from 1943 to 2017. The data set includes 1,902 records of at least 111 species in 155 localities, totaling 42,617 individuals represented. We selected studies that (1) were conducted in forested habitats of the Atlantic Forest, (2) had a minimum sampling effort of at least 500 trap-nights, and (3) contained species abundance data in detail. For each study, we recorded (1) latitude and longitude, (2) name of the locality, (3) employed sampling effort, (4) type of traps used, (5) study year, (6) country, and (7) species name with (8) its respective abundances. For every locality, we also obtained information regarding its (9) ecoregion, (10) predominant vegetation type, and (11) biogeographic subdivision. Whenever necessary, we also (12) updated the species names as new species were described and some genera suffered taxonomic revision since the publication. The localities are spread across the Atlantic Forest and most of the small mammal species known to occur in Atlantic Forest are present in the data set, making it representative of communities of the entire biome. This data set can be used to address various patterns in community ecology and geographical ecology, as the relation between local abundance and environmental suitability, hypothesis regarding local and regional factors on community structuring, species abundance distributions (SAD), functional and phylogenetic mechanisms on community assembling.

In this chapter we provide an updated checklist of Caatinga mammals, with a critical review of previous lists, and an overview of our current knowledge on the distribution and endemism patterns, ecology, behavior, evolution, and biogeography of these mammals. The Caatinga mammal fauna is composed of 183 species (including 11 endemics) that occur within its boundaries, mostly represented by rodents and bats. This list includes taxa with broad distributional ranges within the Caatinga only, those distributed in the Caatinga and in other regions, as well as taxa with very restricted distributions in the region, whether at its borders, in enclaves of specific vegetation types, or endemic to a particular region within the Caatinga. Ecology and behavior studies are still scarce for most species, and although there has been progress in assessing the relationship between precipitation and reproductive biology in small mammals and the physiological adaptations in selected taxa, there is a pressing need for more information on ecology, physiology, and behavior for most species. Caatinga mammals include taxa descending from forest ancestors as well as open area endemics that have been shown to be temporally heterogeneous, with divergence estimates ranging from Late Miocene to Early Pleistocene, leading to a complex evolutionary history for the Caatinga mammals. These mammals also show distinctive distributional patterns, posing challenges for conservation efforts, as these need to address the diversity of Caatinga vegetation physiognomies, such as transitional areas along its borders, humid forest enclaves, and dry formations in nearby ‘Serras’ and ‘Chapadas’, in order to preserve most of its richness.

Ecological aspects related to parasitism are one of the less studied issues in parasitology research, and the scarce evidence available supports that younger specimens present higher infestation rates. The purpose of this work is to establish if higher infestation rates are observed in nursing females and their young captured inside their roost. Bats were captured inside a shelter located in RPPN Estação Veracel, Santa Cruz de Cabrália, Bahia state, Brazil. A total of 56 individuals of Carollia perspicillata were observed, 17 captured inside the roost during the day and 39 in trails at night. Captures of C. perspicillata during the day in a shelter yielded similar infestation rates to bats netted in trails and higher prevalence. The hypothesis that young were more infected was confirmed, based on the higher infestation of nursing females with neonates and on the significant inverse relation between body weight and number of parasites in young and subadults.

The genus Oecomys Thomas, 1906 is currently composed of 16 species with unclear taxonomy and poorly known geographic limits. O. catherinae Thomas, 1909 is known to occur within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest from the states of Santa Catarina to Pernambuco (where the northernmost previously known specimen of Oecomys in the Atlantic forest was recorded), and along riverine forest into the Cerrado. To gain a greater understanding of its geographical and ecological distribution (mainly in Northeastern Brazil) and of its taxonomic characterization, we provide a short review of karyotypical and morphometrical data from specimens collected within the distribution range of the species. Specimens presented 2n = 60 and AN varying between 62 and 64. A table with external and cranial measurements of the analyzed specimens is provided. In this paper we also report the presence of O. catherinae in the semi-deciduous forests of the state of Paraíba, representing the northernmost records of the species in the Atlantic forest and thereby extending its known geographical limits. O. catherinae Thomas, 1906 é a espécie que ocorre ao longo da Floresta Atlântica brasileira dos estados de Santa Catarina a Pernambuco, onde se encontra o registro prévio mais ao norte para Oecomys na Floresta Atlântica, e ao longo de florestas de galeria no Cerrado. Pretendendo esclarecer aspectos relacionados à distribuição geográfica e ecológica de O. catherinae, com ênfase na região nordeste do Brasil, e auxiliar na sua caracterização taxonômica, fornecemos um breve resumo de dados morfométricos e cariotípicos de indivíduos coletados em diversos trabalhos ao longo da área de ocorrência da espécie. Os espécimens apresentaram 2n = 60 e NA variando entre 62 e 64. Uma tabela de medidas corporais externas e cranianas dos indivíduos analisados é fornecida. Também registramos pela primeira vez a presença de O. catherinae nas florestas semi-deciduais do estado da Paraíba, sendo atualmente os registros mais ao norte da espécie na Floresta Atlântica, estendendo os limites geográficos conhecidos para a espécie.

This study assessed the occurrence of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and sexual shape dimorphism (SShD) in the skull and mandible of representatives of most species within the 3 orders of living New World opossums, Didelphimorphia, Paucituberculata, and Microbiotheria, using geometric morphometrics. Centroid sizes and partial warps were extracted from landmarks set on images of the dorsal, ventral, and lateral views of the skull and lateral view of the mandible, and were compared between sexes to estimate SSD and SShD. Specimens totaling 2,932 from 71 species of Didelphidae, 5 species of Caenolestidae, and 1 species of Microbiotheriidae were analyzed. SSD was variable in the Didelphimorphia and the Paucituberculata and absent in Microbiotheria. Similar results were found for SShD, but SSD and SShD are not clearly coupled. I also evaluated the validity of Rensch’s rule—the widely observed phenomenon of correlated increases in SSD and body size for male-biased sexual dimorphism, or correlated decreases in SSD in body size for female-biased sexual dimorphism—in the Didelphidae. Didelphids span 2 orders of magnitude in body size, and, when present, sexual dimorphism is male-biased. Regressions of SSD and SShD estimators onto size, using phylogenetic independent contrasts, showed either no significant relationship between SSD or SShD with size in any of the structures and views analyzed, or a trend contrary to Rensch’s rule (smaller species more dimorphic, but with male-biased dimorphism). Lack of adherence to Rensch’s rule in Didelphimorphia may relate to a lack of social interactions and male territoriality, usually associated with such a trend via sexual selection. If the trend contrary to Rensch’s rule is real, an explanation may lie in the increasing amount of smallbodied species that recently have been found to be semelparous and thus subject to stronger selection for larger males. The analysis of owl pellets contents has long been used for inventorying small mammal communities and constitutes an important complementary method in addition to traditional surveys, because owls prey also on rare species or those with specific microhabitat requirements or behavioural traits, thus sometimes recording taxa that would have gone unnoticed with standard survey techniques (Martin 2005; Teta et al. 2006). Small mammals remains from Barn Owl pellets have also been extensively used in analyses of small mammals distribution throughout geographical gradients (Massoia et al. 1999; Torre et al. 2004). In Brazil, several studies have used this technique, but with one exception (Roda 2006), they were all conducted in southern, southeastern and central Brazil (e.g. MottaJunior 1996; Bonvicino and Bezerra 2003). The Atlantic Forest portion located north of the Sao Francisco River is considered an important centre of endemism in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest – the Pernambuco Endemism Centre (Costa et al. 2000; Silva and Castelletti 2003) and recent estimates indicate it has less than 12% of its original forest cover, composed mostly by small and

Gracilinanus microtarsus, from the Atlantic Forest and G. agilis, widespread in central Brazil in the Cerrado and in the northeastern Caatinga are two small Neotropical arboreal opossum species not frequently recorded in simpatry. Here we report eight G. agilis specimens from three localities and 17 G. microtarsus, from 10 localities, all in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia states. Species proper identification followed diagnostic characters as appearance of dorsum pelage, ocular-mark, ears and tail lengths and size proportion of the posteromedial vacuities in cranium. Chromosomes in metaphases of five specimens were obtained for both species. Our records extend the previous known geographical distribution of G. microtarsus to Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia State and report the occurrence of both species in simpatry. G. microtarsus, in coastal area, was captured in dense ombrophilous and in semideciduous forests, in deciduous seasonal forest and Cerradão in Chapada Diamantina. G. agilis was recorded in gallery forests of Cerrado and very green and dense bush formation of Caatinga. Autosomal complement showed the same diploid and autosomal number already described for both species (2n = 14, NA = 24). Measurements are according to those given in literature and pelage characteristics were useful for the correct species identification. Here we report both G. agilis, described to be endemic to the Cerrado/Caatinga, in opposite to G. microtarsus, considered to be endemic to Atlantic Forest occurring in simpatry in two localities of the Cerrado. Such results indicates that long term trapping effort are necessary to a better definition of species taxonomy, distribution patterns along time and comprehensive understanding how anthropic environmental changes can be interfering in their evolutionary history.

The sequence of molar eruption, along with the timing of replacement of the 3rd deciduous premolar by a permanent premolar, has been documented in several species in the family Didelphidae, and routinely used to establish age classes. We documented the dental eruption and replacement patterns in the 3 species of the neotropical marsupial genus Caluromys, which constitute one of the most basal groups within the Didelphidae. We examined 258 specimens of Caluromys derbianus, 54 specimens of C. lanatus, and 386 specimens of C. philander. These species have a dental eruption pattern that is similar to that of Marmosops, with replacement of the 3rd deciduous premolar after eruption of the 4th molar. However, we sometimes found incompletely erupted P3 and M4 occurring simultaneously as part of a M4–P3 eruption sequence. We suggest that the occurrence of this intermediate pattern in other taxa should be verified by examination of large series of specimens. Because teeth erupting in sequence can be erroneously considered as fitting an intermediate pattern, eruption sequence and time of completion of development should be used separately when using dental eruption in phylogenetic analyses. Because of the high degree of intraspecific variation observed in several taxa in Didelphidae, a system of age classes based solely on eruption of upper molars may be more useful than those that combine information on molar eruption sequence and timing of premolar replacement.

The Didelphidae are considered solitary opossums with few social interactions, usually limited to mating-related or mother–pouch young interactions. Anecdotal reports suggest that additional interactions occur, including den sharing by a few individuals, usually siblings. Here, we report novel observations that indicate opossums are more social than previously thought. These include nest sharing by males and females of Marmosa paraguayana , Gracilinanus microtarsus and Marmosops incanus prior to the onset of the breeding season and without signs of sexual activity; this is taken to indicate early pair-bonding matching and cooperative nest building. We also recorded den sharing among recently weaned siblings of Didelphis aurita and Caluromys philander . In addition, we observed 13 individuals of Didelphis albiventris representing three age classes resting without agonistic interactions in a communal den. These are the first reports of gregarious behaviour involving so many individuals, which are either unrelated or represent siblings from at least two litters, already weaned, sharing the same den with three adults. Sociality in opossums is probably more complex than previously established, and field experimental designs combining the use of artificial nests with camera traps or telemetry may help to gauge the frequency and extent of these phenomena.

The diet of the marsupial Philander frenata (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) at Restinga de Barra de Marica, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, was analyzed in 180 faecal samples collected in 29 months from 1986 to 1990, and by food preferences in the laboratory. In the faeces remnants mainly of invertebrates, besides fruits and vertebrates were found, and diet comparisons were made between sexes, ages and seasons of different humidity. Laboratory experiments corroborated the field data. No significant difference in diet was found between sexes. Although field data showed that subadults and adults eat more vertebrates than young, in the laboratory all animals irrespective of their age showed the same food preference. Invertebrates were more consumed in humid than in superhumid months. Vertebrates were taken opportunistically. There was an inverse relationship between eating of fruits and available water in the environment. Fruits are probably water complements in dry months, as these marsupials have difficulties...

We report the results of a terrestrial small mammal survey at one National Park in the northeastern Brazil, in the state of Pernambuco. The Catimbau National Park is located within the Caatinga domain with the characteristic thorn scrub vegetation. Our sampling encompasses several different vegetation/habitat types within the park area. All specimens collected were prepared as vouchers to be deposited in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. Karyotypes were obtained for all representative purported species collected. We report here the results of this first survey – two species of marsupials and seven of rodents - and added new occurrence localities for several small mammal species of this region, provide karyotypic information and register an undescribed species of arboreal rat of the genus Rhipidomys. This survey illustrates the need for extensive and planned sampling of the Caatinga domain.

The New World family Didelphidae, the basal lineage within marsupials, is commonly viewed as morphologically conservative, yet includes aquatic, terrestrial, scansorial, and arboreal species. Here, I quantitatively estimated the existing variability in size and shape of the Didelphidae scapula (1076 specimens from 56 species) using geometric morphometrics, and compared size and shape differences to evolutionary and ecologic distances. I found considerable variation in the scapula morphology, most of it related to size differences between species. This results in morphologic divergence between different locomotor habits in larger species (resulting from increased mechanical loads), but most smaller species present similarly shaped scapulae. The only exceptions are the water opossum and the short-tailed opossums, and the functional explanations for these differences remain unclear. Scapula size and shape were mapped onto a molecular phylogeny for 32 selected taxa and ancestral size and shapes were reconstructed using squared-changed parsimony. Results indicate that the Didelphidae evolved from a medium- to small-sized ancestor with a generalized scapula, slightly more similar to arboreal ones, but strikingly different from big-bodied present arboreal species, suggesting that the ancestral Didelphidae was a small scansorial animal with no particular adaptations for arboreal or terrestrial habits, and these specializations evolved only in larger-bodied clades.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Skulls are complex morphological structures that exhibit phenotypic plasticity and adaptations to different functions and processes, and are under different pressures, such as the geographical or environmental ones. South America is a latitudinal broad continent, encompassing a variety of biomes and climatic conditions, revealing ecomorphological variations in many mammal species. The main objective of this study was to investigate ecogeographical patterns and determinant factors related to cranial variations in species and genera of mammals with wide geographic distribution in South America (Marsupialia, Xenarthra and Glires), based on size and shape data. From skull photographs of 1.017 specimens in the ventral view in scientific collections, geometric morphometric techniques were used to understand skull variation within the different groups. Two species of marsupials were studied in Chapter I, Caluromys philander and C. lanatus, which were similar in shape, showing similar phenotypic trajectories. The effect of size on shape (allometry) was important for C. lanatus, helping biomechanically in environments southern Amazonia. In addition, the two species were spatially structured, also showing great environmental influence (especially temperature), following the inverse of the Bergmann’s rule. In Chapter II, three species of the Xenarthra superorder (Bradypus variegatus, Tamandua tetradactyla, and Dasypus novemcinctus) presented a weak allometric influence. However, geographical (neutral) factors influenced the shape of B. variegatus and the size of T. tetradactyla, which could be a reflection of the low mobility and dispersion capacity of both species. Importantly, the environmental influence (niche) affected the three species, most notably B. variegatus (which follows the Bergmann’s rule), and D. novemcinctus (highly mobile species, being locally affected by the environment). Chapter III deals with the taxa Cuniculus paca, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, Nectomys spp., and Sylvilagus brasiliensis. Allometry was present notably for the genus Nectomys, suggesting an association with the sexual dimorphism found only in this genus. The environmental influence was noticeable for highly dispersive and large body size species, such as H. hydrochaeris and C. paca. These two species were also affected by spatial filters (geography), but to a lesser extent, as occurred for the other two taxa. Finally, Chapter IV addressed more specifically the masticatory apparatus (molar series and zygomatic arch) of the species of Rhipidomys and Nectomys genus. The interspecific distinction within each genus was visible for some species of Rhipidomys (size and shape), whereas the species of Nectomys presented weak disparity. In relation to the biogeographical hypotheses, the phenotypic response of each genus was divergent, with Rhipidomys shape being related to the primary productivity, and the Nectomys size related mainly to precipitation and temperature. These distinct results suggest different responses according to constraints and ecological attributes of each genus (specialist and generalist, respectively). In general, the results found in this study suggest that the response of each taxon to the various influences suffered is not necessarily the same, but depends on its characteristics and particularities that induce different cranial modifications. Os crânios são estruturas morfológicas complexas que apresentam plasticidade fenotípica e adaptações a diferentes funções e processos e estão sob diferentes pressões, como as geográficas ou ambientais. A América do Sul é um continente latitudinalmente amplo, abrangendo uma variedade de biomas e condições climáticas, revelando variações ecomorfológicas em muitas espécies de mamíferos. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi investigar padrões biogeográficos e fatores determinantes relacionados a variações cranianas em espécies e gêneros de mamíferos com ampla distribuição geográfica na América do Sul (Marsupialia, Xenarthra e Glires), com base em dados de tamanho e forma. A partir de fotografias cranianas de 1,017 espécimes na vista ventral em coleções científicas, técnicas de morfometria geométrica foram usadas para entender a variação do crânio nos diferentes grupos. Duas espécies de marsupiais foram estudadas no Capítulo I, Caluromys philander e C. lanatus, as quais foram semelhantes na forma, demonstrando trajetórias fenotípicas similares. O efeito do tamanho na forma (alometria) foi importante para C. lanatus, ajudando biomecanicamente em ambientes ao sul da Amazônia. Ainda, as duas espécies foram estruturadas espacialmente, além de demonstrarem grande influência ambiental (especialmente temperatura), seguindo o inverso a Regra de Bergmann. No Capítulo II, três espécies da superordem Xenarthra (Bradypus variegatus, Tamandua tetradactyla, e Dasypus novemcinctus) apresentaram uma fraca influência alométrica. Entretanto, fatores geográficos (neutros) influenciaram a forma de B. variegatus e o tamanho de T. tetradactyla, o que poderia ser um reflexo da baixa capacidade de mobilidade e dispersão de ambas as espécies. Mais importante, a influência ambiental (nicho) afetou as três espécies, com destaque para B. variegatus (seguindo a regra de Bergmann), e D. novemcinctus (espécie altamente móvel, sendo afetada localmente pelo ambiente). O Capítulo III trata da variação da forma dos táxons Cuniculus paca, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, Nectomys spp., e Sylvilagus brasiliensis. A alometria esteve presente notoriamente para o gênero Nectomys, sugerindo uma associação com o dimorfismo sexual encontrado apenas neste gênero. A influência ambiental foi perceptível para as espécies altamente dispersivas e com grande tamanho corporal, como H. hydrochaeris e C. paca. Essas duas espécies também foram afetadas pelos filtros espaciais (geografia), mas em menor grau, como ocorreu para os outros dois táxons. E por fim, o Capítulo IV abordou mais especificamente o aparato mastigatório (conjunto dos molares e arco zigomático) das espécies dos gêneros Rhipidomys e Nectomys. A distinção interespecífica dentro de cada gênero foi visível para algumas espécies de Rhipidomys (tamanho e forma), enquanto as espécies de Nectomys apresentaram fraca disparidade. Em relação às hipóteses biogeográficas, a resposta fenotípica de cada gênero foi divergente, com a forma de Rhipidomys relacionada com a produtividade primária, e o tamanho de Nectomys relacionado com a precipitação e temperatura. Esses resultados distintos sugerem respostas diferentes de acordo com restrições e atributos ecológicos de cada gênero (especialista e generalista respectivamente). De modo geral, os resultados encontrados neste estudo sugerem que a resposta de cada táxon frente às várias influências sofridas não é necessariamente a mesma, mas depende de suas características e particularidades que induzem a modificações cranianas distintas.

No presente trabalho utilizo as abordagens de genética quantitativa e integração morfológica para compreender a evolução do crânio em morcegos da Família Phyllostomidae. Esses morcegos exibem uma diversidade de especializações alimentares que não encontra precedentes dentre os demais mamíferos, havendo atualmente formas envolvidas na insetivoria, hematofagia, nectarivoria, carnivoria, omnivoria e frugivoria. Neste trabalho comparo as matrizes de correlação e covariância fenotípicas que quantificam a associação entre caracteres que descrevem o crânio entre espécies de filostomídeos, com o objetivo de investigar se há similaridade estrutural entre elas. Além disso, exploro possíveis fatores que podem afetar a sua estabilidade, como a história evolutiva (filogenia), dieta e as associações funcionais e de desenvolvimento entre os caracteres cranianos. Por fim, investigo a presença de módulos nos crânios dos filostomídeos e avalio as consequências evolutivas dos padrões e das magnitudes de integração na evolução desse grupo. A base de dados compreende 35 medidas cranianas de 2665 indivíduos, abrangendo todas a subfamílias, e representando ao todo 48 espécies e 45 gêneros. Os resultados indicam que após um período de diversificação evolutiva de aproximadamente 33.9 milhões de anos, a estrutura fenótipica de variância/covariância se manteve até certo ponto similar entre as espécies de morcegos filostomídeos. Enquanto os padrões estruturais das matrizes de correlação e covariação permaneceram relativamente similares, a magnitude geral de integração se mostrou evolutivamente mais plástica entre as espécies. Os caracteres cranianos que mais divergiram entre as matrizes estão relacionados às regiões do crânio que expressam grande variação morfológica qualitativa e estão diretamente relacionadas aos hábitos alimentares das espécies. A independência entre a distância filogenética e a similaridade estrutural das matrizes de variância/covariância indica que as mudanças e as manutenções dos padrões de covariância são, até certo ponto, dissociados da história evolutiva do grupo. Por outro lado, mudanças nas estruturas de correlação e covariância fenotípicas estão associadas à dieta do grupo. Embora dieta e filogenia estejam relacionadas, estes fatores diferem quanto a sua associação (e potencial causalidade) com a evolução tanto do fenótipo médio quanto da estrutura de correlação entre os caracteres do crânio. A dieta mostrou um ajuste melhor do que a filogenia para as matrizes de correlação, e para as matrizes de distância morfológica. Além disso, os resultados demonstram que os filostomídeos compartilham padrão de modularidade craniana relacionado à função e desenvolvimento, e os resultados corroboram a organização modular encontrada em outras linhagens de mamíferos. Em geral, as subregiões oral, nasal e a abóbada craniana aparecem como módulos dominantes nos crânios destes morcegos, e um olhar para aspectos funcionais e de história evolutiva ajudam a compreender os padrões de integração morfológica desse grupo tão diverso e intrigante. Nem todas as espécies de filostomídeos estudadas aqui apresentaram variação associada ao tamanho no primeiro componente principal da matriz de covariância. Mesmo não sendo tamanho, esse componente ainda assim age como uma restrição à evolução. Esse resultado é evidente nos valores de correlação altos e significativos entre os índices de magnitude geral de integração e o primeiro componente principal, e das correlações entre o primeiro CP e os índices de flexibilidade e restrição. Espécies que apresentaram alta magnitude geral de integração entre os caracteres do crânio possuem menor capacidade de evoluir na direção da seleção, sendo portanto mais restritas evolutivamente. Espécies de filostomídeos que apresentam asssociações mais baixas nos caracteres cranianos apresentam maior flexibilidade evolutiva, ou seja, maior capacidade em responder na direção em que a seleção está atuando Here I use a quantitative genetics and morphological integration approaches to understand the evolution of bat skulls of the Phyllostomidae family. These bats display an unprecedented diversity in terms of dietary specialization that is unique in mammals, with insectivorous, hematophagous, nectarivorous, carnivorous, omnivorous and frugivorous species. In this thesis, I compare the covariance and correlation phenotypic matrices, which are a quantification of the relationship among skull traits, in order to investigate whether there is structural similarity between them. Furthermore, I explore possible factors that may affect its stability, such as evolutionary history (phylogeny), dietary habits and functional and developmental associations between cranial traits. Finally, I investigate the presence of modules in the skulls of phyllostomids and assess the evolutionary consequences of the patterns and magnitudes of morphological integration in the evolution of this group. The database comprises 35 cranial measurements of 2665 specimens, including all the subfamilies, representing 45 genera and 48 species. The results indicate that after an approximately 33.9 million years period of evolutionary diversification, the phenotypic variance/covariance structure remained, to some extent, similar among species of phyllostomid bats. While the patterns of covariance and correlation matrices remained relatively similar, the overall magnitude of integration presented considerable variation between species. The cranial traits that diverged the most between the matrices are related to the regions of the skull that display great qualitative morphological variation and are directly related to the dietary habits of the species. The independence between the phylogenetic distance and the structural similarity of variance/covariance matrices indicates that changes and stasis in covariance patterns are, to some extent, decoupled from the evolutionary history of the group. On the other hand, changes in the phenotypic correlation and covariance structure are associated with the dietary habits of the group. While diet and phylogeny are related, these factors differ regarding their association (and potential causality) with evolution, both concerning the average phenotype divergence, as well as the correlation structure between cranial traits. The diet showed a better adjustment than the phylogeny for correlation matrices, as well as for the morphological distance matrices. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the phyllostomids share the same patterns of cranial modularity for functional and developmental hypothesis, and confirm the modular structure found in other lineages of mammals. Generally speaking, the oral, nasal and cranial vault subregions appear as dominant modules in the skulls of these bats, and focusing on functional and evolutionary history aspects help to better understand the patterns of morphological integration of this group that is so diverse and intriguing. Not all species of bats that were included in this study showed size variation in the first principal component of the covariance matrix. Even if this first principal component is not size related, this component still acts as an evolutionary constrain. This result is evident in the high and significant correlation values between the overall integration indexes and the first principal component, and regarding the correlation between the first PC and the flexibility and constraint indexes. Species with high overall magnitude of integration between the skull traits have less ability to evolve in the direction of the selection and, therefore, are more evolutionary constrained. Species of bats that exhibit lower associations of cranial traits show greater evolutionary flexibility, i.e., greater capacity to respond in the direction in which selection is acting

Uma abordagem multidisciplinar integrando sistemática molecular, morfometria e genética quantitativa foi utlizada para investigar a história evolutiva do gênero Pteronotus (Chiroptera:Mormoopidae). Esse grupo de morcegos neotropical que tem recebido particular atenção na ultima década por possuir uma diversidade genética incompátivel com a variação morfológica e diversidade taxonômica atualmente descritas. A ultima revisão sistemática do gênero descreve seis espécies e 17 subespécies, mas trabalhos recentes têm reportado elevados níveis de divergência genética entre táxons coespecíficos, sugerindo que a diversidade do grupo está subestimada. Até o momento, nenhum trabalho foi realizado reunindo evidências genéticas e variação morfométrica de todas as unidades taxonômicas atualmente reconhecidas no gênero. Baseada numa ampla amostragem que incluiu grande parte da extensão geográfica do grupo e representantes de 19 dentre os 20 táxons nominais existentes, eu investiguei a variação genética, morfométrica e o padrão de covariação fenotípica entre os caracteres que compõem o crânio das espécies do gênero Pteronotus. Investigaçãoes adicionais foram feitas a fim de propor intervalos de datas para os principais eventos de diversificação dentro do grupo, e quais processos evolutivos e biogeográficos foram os principais responsáveis pelo número e o padrão de distribuição das espécies atuais. As análises filogenéticas, utilizando cinco loci, confirmam resultados prévios sobre a diversidade críptica do grupo, além de sugerirem uma elevada correspondência entre as linhagens genéticas e as subespécies atualmente reconhecidas. Análises discriminantes de 41 variáveis que descrevem tamanho e forma dos ossos do crânio corroboram a elevação das linhagens genéticas ao status de espécie. Um novo arranjo taxonômico é proposto para o gênero, composto por 18 espécies. O padrão de integração nos crânios da Família Mormoopidae apresenta uma estrutura relativamente conservada, concordando com resultados observados em outros grupos de mamíferos, acompanhada por magnitudes gerais de integração relativamente baixas na maioria das espécies. Os resultados sugerem que os crânios dos mormoopídeos são bastante modulares e que o padrão estrutural de associação entre os caracteres cranianos não pode ser explicado apenas por ação da deriva genética na maioria dos nós da filogenia. Os dados indicam que os crânios em Mormoopidae devem ser bastantes flexíveis em suas respostas evolutivas e que a seleção natural agiu conjuntamente sobre eixos de variação distintos da estrutura craniana ao longo da diversificação do grupo. O gênero Pteronotus se originou no Mioceno, há cerca de 17 milhões de anos, e os eventos de diversificação que deram origem aos principais clados do táxon ocorreram entre 15 e 7 milhões de anos atrás. O padrão replicado de ocupação geográfica entre os diferentes clados de Pteronotus sugere um modelo de especiação essencialmente vicariante, mas que requer dispersão para explicar a distribuição de algumas linhagens atuais, assim como as áreas ancestrais estimadas em alguns nós da filogenia. Muitas das espécies do gênero surgiram nos últimos três milhões de anos, período em que o continente americano sofreu algumas reorganizações geográficas e oscilações climáticas intensas, enquanto os eventos de diversificação intraespecífica são bastante recentes, tendo ocorrido no Pleistoceno tardio A multidisciplinary approach integrating molecular systematics, morphometrics and quantitative genetics was used to investigate the evolutionary history of the genus Pteronotus (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae). This Neotropical bat group has received particular attention in the last decade for harboring a genetic diversity much higher than morphological variation and taxonomic diversity currently described. According to the last systematic review this genus has six species with 17 subspecies. However, recent studies reported high levels of genetic divergence among conspecific taxa, suggesting an underestimated diversity for the genus. To date, no work combining genetic evidences and morphometric variation from all taxonomic units currently recognized in this group was performed. Based on a comprehensive sampling including most of the geographic range and 19 from 20 nominal taxa recognized for the genus, I investigated the genetic and morphological variation and the phenotypic covariance patterns among skull characters of Pteronotus species. Additional investigations were made to propose date intervals for the main diversification events within the group, and possible evolutionary and biogeographic processes responsible for the number and distributional patterns of current species. The phylogenetic analyses, using five loci, corroborate previous results on the criptic diversity of the group, and suggest a high correspondence among the genetic lineages and the currently recognized subspecies. Discriminant analysis of 41 variables describing size and shape of cranial bones support the rising of these groups to the specific status. Therefore, we present an updated taxonomic arrangement composed by 18 species. The cranial integration pattern of the family Mormoopidae shows a relatively conserved structure, in accordance with previous results for other mammal groups, followed by low levels of overall magnitude of integration in the majority of species. Results suggest a highly modular skull for mormoopids, and a pattern of structural association among characters that cannot be explained by genetic drift alone in most part of phylogeny nodes. Data indicates that skulls of Mormoopidae should be very flexible in their evolutionary responses, and that natural selection acted together over different lines of variation in cranial structure during the group\'s diversification. Pteronotus arose in Miocene, around 17 million years ago, and the diversification events yielding to the main clades within the genus took place from 15 to 7 million years ago. The replicated pattern of geographic occupancy among different clades of Pteronotus suggest an essentially vicariant model of speciation, but dispersion is also required to explain the geographic range of some of the current lineages, as well as the estimated ancestral areas of some phylogeny nodes. Many of the species in the genus arose in the last three million years , when the American continent underwent some geographic reorganizations and severe climatic oscillations, while the intraspecific diversification events are very recent, having ocurred in the Late Pleistocene

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Tribosphenic molars are considered major innovations of mammals and are related to different structures and variables that may explain their adaptation. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship of body size, mandible shape and diet variables and all four molars of didelphid marsupials in a phylogenetic approach. Geometric morphometric analysis of shape of the lower molars were performed on 261 specimens, 130 females and 131 males, containing a total of 14 genera and 37 species of the Didelphidae family. Twenty- four anatomical landmarks were used to describe the shape of the molars, and twenty-three for the mandible. The body size was estimated from values of molar size (lnCS) and diet was categorized through the literature. All analyzes were performed separately for males and females due to sexual dimorphism. Regressions were performed between the shape of molars and the explanatory variables body size, mandible shape and diet. An analysis of Variation Partitioning was applied to test the explanation portion of each variable. The phylogenetic effect on shape was controlled in such analyses with the method of phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS). For females the diet has a major influence on the molars (30.1%), followed by body size (9.3%) and mandibular shape (2.7%), whereas for males the diet has also a lot of influence (31.4%), body size (10.3%) and mandibular shape (28.5%). The configuration of molars due to diet showed greater deformity in a gradient, showing increased size from the first to the fourth molar area (greater m4) for more faunivorous/omnivorous species and, contrarily, a decrease in size toward the lower m4 for frugivorous/omnivorous species. Variation Partitioning in the diet was more explanatory for females (18.6%) and mandibular shape (13.8%); and the interaction of mandibular shape with diet was more important for males (19.3%). The explanation of diet for both sexes, although significant, has a strong influence of phylogenetic relatedness, while both mandibular shape and body size for males show no such influence of phylogeny. The great difference in the results for both sexes highlights the importance of life style influencing differentially females and males. The variation of the non-uniform molar shape exposes what is already seen in the literature: that didelphids have not a fully exclusive diet. Thus, it is possible to realize the importance of molars in both function and phylogenetic history. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a importância da relação do tamanho corporal, da forma mandibular e da dieta, sob enfoque filogenético, no conjunto dos quatro molares inferiores dos marsupiais didelfídeos. Análises de morfometria geométrica da forma dos molares inferiores foram realizadas em 261 espécimes, 130 fêmeas e 131 machos, contemplando no total 14 gêneros e 37 espécies da família Didelphidae. Vinte e quatro marcos anatômicos foram estimados para descrever a forma dos molares; vinte e três para a mandíbula. O tamanho corporal foi estimado a partir de valores de tamanho molar (lnCS) e a dieta foi categorizada através de dados da literatura. Todas as análises foram realizadas separadamente para fêmeas e machos devido ao dimorfismo sexual. Regressões foram realizadas entre a forma dos molares e as variáveis tamanho corporal, forma mandibular e dieta. Uma análise de Partição de Variância foi aplicada para testar a porção de explicação de cada variável. E controlando o efeito filogenético sobre a forma, o método utilizado foi o de mínimos quadrados generalizados filogenéticos (PGLS). Para fêmeas a dieta apresenta grande influência sobre os molares (30.1%), seguido do tamanho corporal (9.3%) e forma mandibular (2.7%); enquanto para machos a dieta também possui muita influência (31.4%), o tamanho corporal (10.3%) e a forma mandibular (5.3%). A conformação dos molares devido a dieta mostrou maior deformidade, em um gradiente, evidenciando para espécies mais faunívoras/onívoras um aumento em tamanho de área do primeiro ao quarto molar (m4 maior) e espécies frugívoras/onívoras uma diminuição nos mesmos (m4 menor). Na Partição de Variância, a dieta foi mais explicativa para fêmeas (18.6%) e a forma mandibular (13.8%), bem como a interação dessa com a dieta para machos (19.3%). A explicação da dieta para ambos os sexos, apesar de significativa, apresenta forte influência da proximidade filogenética, enquanto a forma mandibular de ambos e tamanho corporal de machos não apresentam essa influência na sua explicabilidade. A maior diferença nos resultados para os sexos evidencia os hábitos de vida distintos, e o quanto essas pressões influenciam de formas variadas fêmeas e machos. Já a variação da forma molar não uniforme expõe o já constatado na literatura de que didelfídeos não apresentam uma dieta totalmente exclusiva. Sendo assim, é possível perceber a importância dos molares em expressar tanto a função quanto a história filogenética.

FACEPE O estudo da integração morfológica, isto é, do relacionamento entre caracteres morfológicos, é relativamente recente. Desde a década de 50, estudos neste campo floresceram, envolvendo os campo da morfometria tradicional e, mais recentemente, a morfometria geométrica. Muitos dos trabalhos realizados com ferramentas da morfometria geométricas são heurísticos, visando o desenvolvimento de métodos analíticos, utilizando quase sempre asas de insetos ou mandíbula de roedores. Os estudos com morfometria linear têm se tornado mais exploratórios, se preocupado em comparar padrões de integração entre grupos taxonômicos, bem como verificar a existência de módulos (grupo de caracteres fortemente relacionados) hipotéticos. O resultado de cerca de 60 anos de estudos nesta área é uma gama de ferramentas e conceitos distintos, desenvolvidos por diversos autores, que não têm sido utilizados em conjunto em um mesmo estudo. No presente estudo, padrões de integração morfológica e modularidade em marsupiais didelfídeos foram investigados por meio de ferramentas da morfometria linear e geométrica, ao passo que as diferentes metodologias utilizadas foram comparadas. Para tanto, foram analisados 937 espécimes de crânio e 1040 de mandíbula de 13 espécies do grupo através de fotos. Os dados consistiram de medidas lineares com e sem efeito da variação de tamanho e coordenadas geométricas, sendo analisados separadamente. A partir destes dados, matrizes de correlação e matrizes de covariância foram extraídas, para cada espécie, e foram submetidas às análises de comparação de padrões (correlação de matrizes e correlação de vetores), magnitude geral de integração (coeficiente de correlação quadrado médio) e testes confirmatórios de modularidade. Testes confirmatórios de modularidade com base nas matrizes empíricas foram efetuados através da comparação com matrizes teóricas e cálculo do coeficiente RV. Todos os métodos concordaram que os padrões de integração são altamente similares entre os didelfídeos, mas os resultados da morfometria linear sem efeito do tamanho e geométrica foram mais similares, tanto para crânio quanto para mandíbula. Nas análises confirmatórias de modularidade, resultados semelhantes foram novamente obtidos entre as morfometrias geométrica e linear sem efeito do tamanho, principalmente para o crânio. A evidência de modularidade é maior quando se retira o efeito do tamanho e componente alométrico, principalmente para o crânio. No entanto, mais uma vez, morfometria linear e morfometria geométrica produziram resultados mais similares Estes resultados sugerem que padrões de integração e modularidade podem ser analisados por qualquer uma das ferramentas morfométricas (linear ou geométrica), porém é necessário levar em consideração o efeito alométrico e o fato de que os valores obtidos podem ser arbitrários dentro de certos limites, apesar de, no geral, apresentarem evidências de modularidade. Além disso, conclui-se que a evolução dos padrões de integração e modularidade na mandíbula e principalmente do crânio dos didelfídeos é fortemente dirigida pela mudança na magnitude geral de integração e efeito alométrico. The study of morphological integration, that is, the relationship between morphological traits, is fairly recent. Since the 50s, studies in this field flourished, encompassing the traditional (linear) morphometrics and, even more recently, the geometric morphometrics. Most works done through the geometric morphometric tools are heuristic, seeking the development of analytical methods, by mostly using either insect wings or rodents mandible. The studys with linear morphometrics, that are older, have become more exploratory, concerning about to compare patterns of morphological integration between taxonomic groups, as well as examine the existence of hypothetical modules (groups of tightly related traits). The result of nearly 60 years of research in this field is a range of distint tools and concepts, developed by several authors, that has not been used together in the same study. Here, the patterns of morphological integration and modularity in didelphid marsupials were investigated by means of tools from linear and geometric morphometrics, whereas the different used methodologies were compared. For this, through photos, 937 skull and 1040 mandible specimens from 13 species of that group were analysed. The data consisted of linear measures, with and without the size variation effects, and geometric coordinates, each individually analyzed. From these data, correlation matrices and covariance matrices were extracted, for each specie, and were submitted to the analysis of patterns comparision (matrices correlation and vectors correlation) and confirmatory analisys of modularity. Confirmatory analysis upon the empirical matrices were performed through comparision with theoretical matrices and coefficient RV calculation. All of the comparision methods agree among themselves that the patterns of integration are highly similar between the didelphids, but the results from linear morphometrics without size effects and geometric morphometrics were even more similar, for both skull and mandible. The evidence of modularity is larger when the size effects are removed and the allometric component, mainly for skull. However, one more time, linear morphometrics and geometric morphometrics yielded more similar results. These findings together suggest that the patterns of integration and modularity can be analyzed by any morphometrics tools (linear or geometrics), but it is necessary to take into account the size and allometric effects. Also, one must consider the fact that the values obtained might be arbitrary within certain limits, despite they yielded evidences of modularity. Furthermore, one might conclude that the evolution of pattens of integration and modularity in the mandible and especially in the skull, for didelphids marsupials, is tighly driven by the shifts in the overall magnitude of integration and allometric effects.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the diet of seven species of didelphids (Caluromys philander, Didelphis albiventris, Gracilinanus agilis, G. microtarsus, Marmosa (Micoureus) paraguayana, Marmosops incanus e Metachirus nudicaudatus) and the selection of the available food resources (arthropods and fruits). The study was conducted between November 2009 and October 2011 in a riparian area of Cerrado in the Parque Estadual do Rio Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Arthropods, fruits, flowers and vertebrates were consumed in different proportions by the studied species. Flowers and vertebrates were consumed mainly in the dry season and the diversity of the diet of all species was higher during the rainy season. Not all resources (arthropods and fruits) were consumed according to their availability in the study site. Although abundant, Hymenoptera (Formicidade) was rejected by all species being consumed below their local availability. The didelphids selected fruits of Melastomataceae (Miconia and Clidemia urceolata spp.) and rejected fruits of Rubiaceae, a feature highly abundant in the study site. The results suggest that the frequent use of a food item may be associated both with the preference (selection) of the consumers, as well as the local availability of the resource. Most seeds that remained intact after passage through the digestive tract of animals, do not show significant differences in their rates of germination compared with seeds from the control group and the average time of dormancy consumed by marsupials ranged from 30 (Cipocereus minensis) and 175 days (Cordiera sessilis). Gracilinanus agilis and G. microtarsus, which occur sympatrically in the study site, although having a high niche overlap showed differences in habitat use and dietary diversity. No Brasil, a Família Didelphidae é composta por 54 espécies com ampla distribuição por diferentes habitats e um padrão de consumo alimentar que pode variar desde espécies mais frugívoras até as mais insetívoras/carnívoras. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre a dieta de sete espécies de didelfídeos (Caluromys philander, Didelphis albiventris, Gracilinanus agilis, G. microtarsus, Marmosa (Micoureus) paraguayana, Marmosops incanus e Metachirus nudicaudatus) e a seleção de recursos alimentares (artrópodes e frutos) disponíveis. O estudo foi realizado entre novembro de 2009 e outubro de 2011, em uma área de mata ciliar de cerrado no Parque Estadual do Rio Preto, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Artrópodes, frutos, flores e vertebrados foram consumidos em diferentes proporções pelas espécies estudadas. Flores e vertebrados foram consumidos preferencialmente na estação seca e a diversidade da dieta de todas as espécies foi maior durante a estação chuvosa. Nem todos os recursos (artrópodes e frutos) foram consumidos de acordo com sua disponibilidade na área de estudo. Apesar de abundante, Hymenoptera (Formicidade) foi rejeitado por todas as espécies, sendo consumido abaixo de sua disponibilidade local. Os didelfídeos selecionaram frutos de Melastomataceae (Clidemia urceolata e Miconia spp.) e rejeitaram frutos de Rubiaceae, um recurso altamente abundante na área de estudo. Os resultados sugerem que o frequente consumo de um item alimentar pode estar associado tanto com a preferência (seleção) por parte do consumidor, bem como com a disponibilidade local do recurso. A maior parte das sementes, que permaneceram intactas após passagem pelo trato digestório dos animais, não apresentou diferenças significativas em suas taxas de germinação quando comparadas com as sementes do grupo controle e o tempo médio de dormência das sementes consumidas pelos marsupiais variou entre 30 (Cipocereus minensis) e 175 dias (Cordiera sessilis). Gracilinanus agilis e G. microtarsus, que ocorrem em simpatria na área de estudo, apesar de apresentarem uma alta sobreposição de nicho apresentaram diferenças no uso do habitat e na diversidade da dieta.

Fundação de Amparo à Ciência e Tecnologia do Estado de Pernambuco A evolução do dimorfismo sexual de forma e tamanho do crânio e mandíbula foi estudada em 31 táxons de marsupiais didelfídeos, a fim de compreender melhor o desenvolvimento desse caráter na família. Para elucidar fatores que poderiam estar condicionando esse dimorfismo nos Didelphidae, foi analisada também a evolução de outros dois elementos: alometrias entre tamanho e forma do crânio e da mandíbula; e bionomia das mesmas 31 espécies. Foi realizado um mapeamento de todos estes caracteres, qualitativos e quantitativos, sobre uma filogenia da família, reconstruindo seus estados ancestrais utilizando métodos de parcimônia. Foram feitas também correlações utilizando contrastes independentes dos dados de dimorfismo sexual para auxiliar a esclarecer os padrões evolutivos do dimorfismo sexual. Tais correlações foram significativas, indicando coevolução entre os tipos de dimorfismo em ambas as estruturas estudadas. Não houve tendência unidirecional de surgimento/desaparecimento e aumento/decréscimo do dimorfismo nos Didelphidae. As reconstruções também indicaram coevolução entre os dimorfismos. Poucas espécies são altamente dimórficas e a maioria apresenta dimorfismo sexual de forma. Os resultados de alometrias entre os sexos foram iguais para crânio e mandíbula, mas elas também não apresentam padrão geral em direção à igualdade ou diferenciação das mesmas entre os sexos. Ambos os estados estão uniformemente distribuídos na filogenia. O comportamento das alometrias no crânio e na mandíbula coevoluiu, mas o padrão de alometrias entre os sexos não é conservado dentro de Didelphidae e não coevoluiu com o dimorfismo sexual, indicando que não explica a evolução deste caráter. Outros fatores, não-alométricos, devem condicionar este caráter nessa família. No entanto, apesar de padrões aparecem dentro de alguns clados, não há também evidência de coevolução entre bionomia e dimorfismo sexual nos Didelphidae. Espécies asazonais são poucas e não dimórficas de tamanho, talvez pelo fato de se reproduzirem continuamente e sofrerem menores pressões seletivas. A semelparidade é rara dentro de Didelphidae, surgindo apenas em Monodelphini e seguindo daí caminhos evolutivos distintos. Espécies semélparas exibem maiores tamanhos de ninhada nos Didelphidae por se reproduzirem uma única vez. Acredita-se que a seleção sexual direcione o padrão de dimorfismo sexual onde os machos são maiores que as fêmeas em espécies semélparas de Didelphidae. Portanto, nem alometrias nem bionomia, a princípio, explicam nem condicionam a evolução do dimorfismo sexual nos didelfídeos. A inclusão de uma maior quantidade de dados reprodutivos de marsupiais didelfídeos seria ideal para testar a veracidade da ausência de coevolução entre estratégias bionômicas e dimorfismo sexual. Associar dados ecológicos ou de padrões de distribuição poderiam ajudar a compreender melhor a evolução das estratégias bionômicas e a sua importância sobre a evolução do dimorfismo sexual nos Didelphidae

CNPq O reconhecimento de áreas de endemismo é essencial para entender a evolução espaço-temporal. Neste trabalho objetivei identificar as áreas de endemismo para mamíferos terrestres do Novo Mundo, e investigar os fatores biogeográficos e metodológicos envolvidos neste endemismo. Com dados de distribuição geográfica da IUCN, eu realizei uma PAE com todos os mamíferos excluindo as ordens Sirenia e Cetacea. Testei quadrículas de 1° ou 2°, com todos os mamíferos não aquáticos e com apenas terrestres (sem morcegos), com todas as quadrículas e removendo as ilhas, e dobrando o peso para surgimento do táxon (caractere) ou mantendo peso igual para todos os estados de caracteres. Apliquei algoritmos de parcimônia com o TNT (New Technology Search) usando em cada matriz o melhor nível de busca reconhecido em testes preliminares (encontrou a melhor resolução de árvore), e identifiquei a melhor árvore: a mais curta, e com Índice de Consistência (IC) e de Retenção (IR) mais altos. Listei os clados com valores de bootstrap ≥ 75 e com no mínimo duas sinapomorfias autênticas, e reconheci no mapa as áreas de endemismo. Buscando a árvore mais parcimoniosa com todas as matrizes do Novo Mundo, com quadrículas de 1° e 2°, removendo os táxons de ampla vagilidade ou não, excluindo as ilhas ou não, em todos os níveis de buscas testados a melhor árvore foi encontrada com quadrículas de 2° removendo os morcegos, incluindo as ilhas e não alterando o peso dos estados dos caracteres (matriz NM2°Terrestres) tendo IC = 0,13 e IR = 0,87. Identifiquei oito áreas de endemismo representando as três Américas, predominantemente na latitude tropical, em florestas de altas altitudes, com 32 espécies endêmicas representando as ordens Rodentia, Soricomorpha, Lagomorpha, Carnivora, Artiodactyla e Primates. Três espécies estão classificadas como “dados deficientes” pela IUCN e não assumi serem espécies endêmicas. Das outras 27, duas de médio porte e as outras são pequenos mamíferos. Mamíferos podem explorar vários nichos ecológicos, porém, nas áreas de endemismo no Novo Mundo percebi que fatores ecológicos, geográficos ou evolutivos devem interferir na distribuição de alguns táxons, formando as áreas de endemismo, pois existe uma forte relação dos mamíferos endêmicos do Novo Mundo com o habitat e o relevo das áreas. Reconheci que a quantidade e qualidade dos dados (tamanho e número das quadrículas, e excesso de quadrículas com mesma composição) influenciam os IC e IR da árvore, e possivelmente o excesso de táxons que ocorrem em muitas células interfira no arranjo da árvore mais parcimoniosa desvalorizando o bootstrap dos ramos e consequentemente prejudicando a identificação das áreas de endemismo.
