Dielectric transmission gratings with a similar period as the wavelength of the incident light can exhibit strong polarization dependence. By optimizing the groove width of a negative first-order Littrow transmission grating it can be achieved that light is transmitted to the zeroth order for one polarization, regardless of the groove depth, while it is efficiently diffracted for the other polarization. An investigation of this remarkable effect, based on a modal field representation inside the grating, as well as experimental results are presented. OCIS codes: 050.0050, 050.1950, 230.5440.

The Goos-Hanchen displacement in the usual total internal reflection configuration is greatly enhanced simultaneously for both reflected and transmitted light beams by coating a thin film onto the surface of the first prism when the angle of incidence is below but near the critical angle for total reflection at the prism-film interface. It is found that the largely enhanced displacements lead to applications in optical devices and integrated optics.

The possibility of achieving multifrequency transparency and cloaking for a cylindrical object by using a multilayered plasmonic shell is examined. The results have shown that the multifrequency transparency and cloaking for any dielectric or metal cylinder is achieved by a suitable adjustment of the structure parameter, permittivity and permeability of the multilayered shell.

The study related to the microwave radiation by a planoconcave lens based on photonic crystal superlattice consisting of dielectric rods of two different diameters is presented. The results shed light on the negative refractive index of subband arising from the Brillouin zone folding in the lattice with the composite unit cell.

Spatial and temporal evolution of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) during a single current pulse is analyzed. The results have shown that the DBD discharge cannot be considered as a one-dimensional object even for the flat parallel electrodes configuration.

The complex dielectric permittivity of biased superlattice (BSL) is calculated beyond the Born approximation for a wide spectral range. The appearance of a localized terahertz mode is explained when a biased superlattice is placed at a vacuum-dielectric interface.

The optimization of the magneto-optical (MO) response of dielectric/Fe/dielectric sandwich structures for microwave B-field sensor applications is reported. The results have shown that it is very important to optimize the bottom dielectric layer rather than the top layer in order to enhance the MO performance of the sensor.

A pump and probe system, where the pump pulse is stretched up and is much longer than the probe pulse duration, is developed and the time-resolved excitation processes in omnidirectional reflectors Si[O.sub.2]/Ti[O.sub.2] and ZnS/Mg[F.sub.2] studied. The results reveal that as the pump pulse energy is higher than the threshold value, the reflectivity of the probe, the reflectivity of the probe pulse decreases rapidly during former half, rather than around the peak of the pump pulse.
