Toxicological test methods generate raw data and provide instructions on how to use these to determine a final outcome such as a classification of test compounds as hits or non-hits. The data processing pipeline provided in the test method description is often highly complex. Usually, multiple layers of data, ranging from a machine-generated output to the final hit definition, are considered. Transition between each of these layers often requires several data processing steps. As changes in any of these processing steps can impact the final output of new approach methods (NAMs), the processing pipeline is an essential part of a NAM description and should be included in reporting templates such as the ToxTemp. The same raw data, processed in different ways, may result in different final outcomes that may affect the readiness status and regulatory acceptance of the NAM, as an altered output can affect robustness, performance, and relevance. Data management, processing, and interpretation are therefore important elements of a comprehensive NAM definition. We aim to give an overview of the most important data levels to be considered during the development and application of a NAM. In addition, we illustrate data processing and evaluation steps between these data levels. As NAMs are increasingly standard components of the spectrum of toxicological test methods used for risk assessment, awareness of the significance of data processing steps in NAMs is crucial for building trust, ensuring acceptance, and fostering the reproducibility of NAM outcomes. Two-stage autoignition of n-dodecane droplets with varying ambient oxygen concentrations in oxygen-nitrogen mixtures are investigated experimentally under microgravity conditions using high-speed shadowgraphy. The ambient pressure and temperature are held constant at 3 atm and 650 K, respectively, while the droplet initial diameter is fixed approximately at 1.2 mm. During the two-stage autoignition process, first a cool-flame front forms in the leaner regions farther away from the evaporating droplet, and it then propagates toward the fuel-rich region closer to the droplet surface, eventually encompassing the droplet. A hot-flame kernel is then initiated in the wake of the cool flame and very quickly expands, establishing a classical diffusion flame around the droplet. The first and second ignition delay times are measured from shadowgraphic images captured at 3000 frames per second. The first induction time is found to be insensitive to the ambient oxygen concentration, while the second induction time varies approximately as the negative 2 power of the oxygen mole fraction. Field studies suggest that changes in the stable isotope ratios of phytoplankton communities can be used to track changes in the utilization of different nitrogen sources, i.e., to detect shifts from dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) uptake to atmospheric nitrogen (N2) fixation by diazotrophic cyanobacteria as an indication of nitrogen limitation. We explored changes in the stable isotope signature of the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichormus variabilis in response to increasing nitrate (NO3−) concentrations (0 to 170 mg L−1) under controlled laboratory conditions. In addition, we explored the influence of nitrogen utilization at the primary producer level on trophic fractionation by studying potential changes in isotope ratios in the freshwater model Daphnia magna feeding on the differently grown cyanobacteria. We show that δ15N values of the cyanobacterium increase asymptotically with DIN availability, from -0.7 ‰ in the absence of DIN (suggesting N2 fixation) to 2.9 ‰ at the highest DIN concentration (exclusive DIN uptake). In contrast, δ13C values of the cyanobacterium did not show a clear relationship with DIN availability. The stable isotope ratios of the consumer reflected those of the differently grown cyanobacteria but also revealed significant trophic fractionation in response to nitrogen utilization at the primary producer level. Nitrogen isotope turnover rates of Daphnia were highest in the absence of DIN as a consequence of N2 fixation and resulting depletion in 15N at the primary producer level. The consumer literature on branding to date coalesces around the notion that brands are constantly contested. Brand contestation arises where the actions of consumer brand actors meet, and sometimes confront, those of the brands' legal owners. This article integrates the extant branding research, a qualitative prestudy, and two complementary empirical studies to advance a theoretical process model of brand contestation. First, an in-depth analysis of thirty historical cases reveals its dynamics and how both the magnitude of contestation and the momentum of mobilization affect brand contestations' scope and evolution. Second, interviews with upper-level marketing and branding executives add an emerging perspective that brand managers can use the energy generated by consumers' contestation to develop antifragility—a brand's ability to grow and thrive as a result of contestation.
