Abstract

The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is considered part of the ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ characterising the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site (WS WHS). The Trilateral Wadden Sea Plan aims to preserve the conservation status of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation Area, encompassing the WS WHS. The plan has specified two conservation targets for the harbour porpoise: (1) viable stocks and a natural reproduction capacity and (2) conservation of habitat quality for its conservation. To assess the current occurrence of the harbour porpoise in the Wadden Sea area, we collated and analysed data from regional and national research projects using telemetry, aerial surveys, strandings and passive acoustic monitoring, obtained over the years 1990–2020. The results illustrate that porpoises occur in both offshore and intertidal waters, showing seasonal movements and changes in local occurrence over time. Some porpoises displayed limited home ranges throughout the year, suggesting a possible residency for some of the animals using the Wadden Sea area. We also showed that methods, frequency and spatial coverage of monitoring activities vary among the countries Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. We discuss the suitability of the different methods both regarding the challenges of monitoring in the complex Wadden Sea habitat as well as their ability to target the conservation aims of the WHS. We give several recommendations to assess the status of the species to meet the identified conservation aims.

10. Regional differences in fatty acid composition in common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) from the North Atlantic

Abstract

Variation in fatty acid (FA) composition of blubber collected in 1998 from 170 common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) was used to study population structure in the North Atlantic. Samples from seven IWC management units were analysed: West Greenland (‘WG’, n = 69); East Greenland (‘CG’, n = 3); Jan Mayen (‘CM’, n = 24); Svalbard (‘ES’, n = 16); the Barents Sea (‘EB’, n = 30); Vestfjorden/Lofoten (‘EC’, n = 7); and the North Sea (‘EN’, n = 21). FA analyses were conducted on both deep and superficial blubber with a one-step extraction and esterification method followed by gas-chromatography. The 43 FAs identified comprised 93-99% of total FAs. CART and MANOVA analyses on FA signatures in both blubber sections suggested a ‘3-geographic Regions model’ where the regions were Greenland (WG, CG), the Northeast Atlantic (CM, ES, EB, EC) and the North Sea (EN). This is in general agreement with a genetic study on the same samples and suggests that differences in FA signatures can be used for studying population structure in minke whales. Potential variation in FA signatures caused by internal and environmental factors needs to be better understood. It is recommended that future studies of blubber FA signatures in minke whales include samples from their entire North Atlantic range (including Canadian and Icelandic waters). Samples should be collected from a pre-specified body site to rule out possible internal variation and during a narrow time-window in the same year to rule out seasonal exchange between areas.

12. Examining Evolving Performance on the Force Concept Inventory Using Factor Analysis

Abstract

The application of factor analysis to the "Force Concept Inventory" (FCI) has proven to be problematic. Some studies have suggested that factor analysis of test results serves as a helpful tool in assessing the recognition of Newtonian concepts by students. Other work has produced at best ambiguous results. For the FCI administered as a pre- and post-test, we see factor analysis as a tool by which the changes in conceptual associations made by our students may be gauged given the evolution of their response patterns. This analysis allows us to identify and track conceptual linkages, affording us insight as to how our students have matured due to instruction. We report on our analysis of 427 pre- and post-tests. The factor models for the pre- and post-tests are explored and compared along with the methodology by which these models were fit to the data. The post-test factor pattern is more aligned with an expert's interpretation of the questions' content, as it allows for a more readily identifiable relationship between factors and physical concepts. We discuss this evolution in the context of approaching the characteristics of an expert with force concepts. Also, we find that certain test items do not significantly contribute to the pre- or post-test factor models and attempt explanations as to why this is so. This may suggest that such questions may not be effective in probing the conceptual understanding of our students.

Abstract

This paper explores digital education for pupils in a humanities teaching-learning lab. So far, digital humanities educational approaches have been primarily aimed at students. Teaching-learning labs, in which students design, implement and evaluate teaching offers for pupils, have so far almost exclusively existed in STEM subjects.Based on a classification in European frameworks and a literature analysis on teaching-learning labs of digital history education, the current state of the art on the topic is elucidated. Using concrete practical examples, the first results of involving students in digital history projects will be presented and suitable digital tools for teaching humanities content will be introduced.
