Abstract Background Since older adults spend significant time in their neighborhood environment, environmental factors such as neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, high racial segregation, low healthy food availability, low access to recreation, and minimal social engagement may have adverse effects on cognitive function and increase susceptibility to dementia. DNA methylation, which is associated with neighborhood characteristics as well as cognitive function and white matter hyperintensity (WMH), may act as a mediator between neighborhood characteristics and neurocognitive outcomes. Methods In this study, we examined whether DNA methylation in peripheral blood leukocytes mediates the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and cognitive function (N = 542) or WMH (N = 466) in older African American (AA) participants without preliminary evidence of dementia from the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Arteriopathy (GENOA). Results For a 1-mile buffer around a participant’s residence, each additional fast food destination or unfavorable food store with alcohol per square mile was nominally associated with a 0.05 (95%CI: 0.01, 0.09) and a 0.04 (0.00, 0.08) second improvement in visual conceptual tracking score, respectively. We analyze the Google matrix of directed networks of Wikipedia articles related to eight recent Wikipedia language editions representing different cultures (English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese). Using the reduced Google matrix algorithm, we determine relations and interactions of 23 society concepts and 17 religions represented by their respective articles for each of the eight editions. The effective Markov transitions are found to be more intense inside the two blocks of society concepts and religions while transitions between the blocks are significantly reduced. We establish five poles of influence for society concepts (Law, Society, Communism, Liberalism, Capitalism) as well as five poles for religions (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese folk religion) and determine how they affect other entries. We compute inter-edition correlations for different key quantities providing a quantitative analysis of the differences or the proximity of views of the eight cultures with respect to the selected society concepts and religions.

Myocardial fibrosis is a major pathologic disorder associated with a multitude of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The pathogenesis is complex and encompasses multiple molecular pathways. Integration of fibrosis-associated genes into the global MetaCore network of protein-protein interactions (PPI) offers opportunities to identify PPI with functional and therapeutic significance. Here, we report the generation of a fibrosis-focused PPI network and identification of fibroblast-specific arbitrators driving reparative and reactive myocardial fibrosis. In TGF-β-mediated fibroblast activation, developed network analysis predicts new regulatory mechanisms for fibrosis-associated genes. We introduce an efficient Erdös barrage approach to suppress activation of a number of fibrosis-associated nodes in order to reverse fibrotic cascades. In the network model each protein node is characterized by an Ising up or down spin corresponding to activated or repairing state acting on other nodes being initially in a neutral state. An asynchronous Monte Carlo process describes fibrosis progression determined by a dominant action of linked proteins. Our results suggest that the constructed Ising Network Fibrosis Interaction model offers network insights into fibrosis mechanisms and can complement future experimental efforts to counteract cardiac fibrosis.

Abstract During the April 2023 Brazil–China summit, the creation of a trade currency supported by the BRICS countries was proposed. Using the United Nations Comtrade database, providing the frame of the world trade network associated to 194 UN countries during the decade 2010–2020, we study a mathematical model of influence battle of three currencies, namely, the US dollar, the euro, and such a hypothetical BRICS currency. In this model, a country trade preference for one of the three currencies is determined by a multiplicative factor based on trade flows between countries and their relative weights in the global international trade. The three currency seed groups are formed by 9 eurozone countries for the euro, 5 Anglo-Saxon countries for the US dollar and the 5 BRICS countries for the new proposed currency. The countries belonging to these 3 currency seed groups trade only with their own associated currency whereas the other countries choose their preferred trade currency as a function of the trade relations with their commercial partners. The trade currency preferences of countries are determined on the basis of a Monte Carlo modeling of Ising type interactions in magnetic spin systems commonly used to model opinion formation in social networks. We adapt here these models to the world trade network analysis. The results obtained from our mathematical modeling of the structure of the global trade network show that as early as 2012 about 58% of countries would have preferred to trade with the BRICS currency, 23% with the euro and 19% with the US dollar. Our results announce favorable prospects for a dominance of the BRICS currency in international trade, if only trade relations are taken into account, whereas political and other aspects are neglected.

We introduce the Ising Network Opinion Formation (INOF) model and apply it to the analysis of networks of six Wikipedia language editions. In the model, Ising spins are placed at network nodes/articles and the steady-state opinion polarization of spins is determined from the Monte Carlo iterations in which a given spin orientation is determined by in-going links from other spins. The main consideration was the opinion confrontation between capitalism, imperialism (blue opinion) and socialism, communism (red opinion). These nodes have fixed spin/opinion orientation while other nodes achieve their steady-state opinions in the process of Monte Carlo iterations. We found that the global network opinion favors socialism, communism for all six editions. The model also determined the opinion preferences for world countries and political leaders, showing good agreement with heuristic expectations. We also present results for opinion competition between Christianity and Islam, and USA Democratic and Republican parties. We argue that the INOF approach can find numerous applications for directed complex networks.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this experiment was to investigate how different levels of Eimeria infection affect the performance, intestinal health, oxidative status, and egg production of Hy-Line W-36 pullets and laying hens. Three hundred and sixty Hy-Line W-36 pullets, aged 15 wk, were randomly distributed into 5 treatment groups, each comprising 6 replicates and a nonchallenged control. At 15 wk, pullets were inoculated with different levels of mixed Eimeria species as high-dose, medium-high, medium-low, and low-dose treatments. The growth performance and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were measured from 0- to 18-days postinoculation (DPI), whereas hen day egg production (HDEP) was recorded from wk 19. The markers of gastrointestinal health and oxidative status were measured at 6 DPI, 14 DPI, and 23 wk of age. The findings revealed a significant linear reduction in growth performance in response to increased Eimeria challenge dosage on 6 and 14 DPI (P < 0.0001, P-L < 0.0001). An interaction between the graded level of Eimeria infection and DPI was observed for ADFI. The challenged pullets showed a reduction in ADFI starting at 4 DPI, which persisted until 14 DPI, when ADFI recovered back to normal. The most significant drop in feed intake was observed in 6 DPI in all the Eimeria-infected groups. The markers of gastrointestinal health (gastrointestinal permeability and tight junction proteins) were upregulated in challenged pullets because of infection, whereas the relative mRNA expression of key nutrient transporters was downregulated following infection on 6 and 14 DPI (P < 0.05). As a result of an infection on 6 DPI, the oxidative equilibrium was shifted toward the oxidative stress, and at the same time, upregulation of proinflammatory and inflammatory cytokines was observed (P < 0.05). An interaction between the Eimeria challenge dosage and bird age was observed for HDEP (P = 0.0427). The pullets infected with Eimeria started to lay eggs later than the Control birds. However, the HDEP of the challenged groups became similar to Control only at wk 22, 3 wk after laying eggs. In conclusion, coccidiosis reduced growth performance, altered gastrointestinal health, induced oxidative stress, and delayed egg production when infected at the prelay stage of pullets and negatively impacted the laying hens' overall performance.

In a dissipative regime, we study the properties of several qubits coupled to a driven resonator in the framework of a Jaynes–Cummings model. The time evolution and the steady state of the system are numerically analyzed within the Lindblad master equation, with up to several million components. Two semi-analytical approaches, at weak and strong (semiclassical) dissipations, are developed to describe the steady state of this system and determine its validity by comparing it with the Lindblad equation results. We show that the synchronization of several qubits with the driving phase can be obtained due to their coupling to the resonator. We establish the existence of two different qubit synchronization regimes: In the first one, the semiclassical approach describes well the dynamics of qubits and, thus, their quantum features and entanglement are suppressed by dissipation and the synchronization is essentially classical. In the second one, the entangled steady state of a pair of qubits remains synchronized in the presence of dissipation and decoherence, corresponding to the regime non-existent in classical synchronization.

ABSTRACT: An experiment was carried out to evaluate the impact of mixed Eimeria challenge on skeletal health of Hy-Line W-36 pullets. A total of 540, 16-day-old pullets were randomly allocated into 5 treatment groups, including a nonchallenged control. A mixed Eimeria species solution containing 50,000 E. maxima, 50,000 E. tenella, and 250,000 E. acervulina oocysts per mL was prepared and challenged to 1 group as a high-dose treatment. The 2-fold serial dilution was done to prepare the medium-high (25,000 E. maxima; 25,000 E. tenella; 125,000 E. acervulina), the medium-low (12,500 E. maxima; 12,500 E. tenella; 62,500 E. acervulina), and the low (6,250 E. maxima; 6,250 E. tenella; 31,250 E. acervulina) dose treatments which were challenged to 3 corresponding groups, respectively. The mineral apposition rate (MAR) was measured from 0 to 14 d post inoculation (DPI) and 14 to 28 DPI using calcein injection. The microstructural architecture of the femur was analyzed using the Skyscan X-ray microtomography (microCT) on 6, 14, and 28 DPI. The results showed that the MAR decreased linearly with an increase in the challenged dose (P < 0.05) during 0 to 14 DPI. The results of microCT revealed that cortical and total BMD, BMC, bone volume (BV), and bone volume as a fraction of tissue volume (BV/TV) of femur decreased both linearly (P < 0.05). Conversely, the total number of pores increased linearly with an increase in challenge dosages on 6 and 14 DPI. Trabecular BMD, BV, BV/TV, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness decreased linearly with an increase in the challenge dosages (P < 0.05) on 6 DPI. Furthermore, Eimeria infection significantly increased the number of osteoclasts and osteoclastic activity (P = 0.001). The result of this study suggests that the mixed Eimeria challenge negatively impacts the quality of skeletal health in a linear or quadratic manner with an increase in the concentration of Eimeria oocysts. The negative impact on long bone development might be due to malabsorption, nutrient deficiency during the infection, along with oxidative stress/inflammation disrupting the balance of osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells and their functions.

We extend the opinion formation approach to probe the world influence of economical organizations. Our opinion formation model mimics a battle between currencies within the international trade network. Based on the United Nations Comtrade database, we construct the world trade network for the years of the last decade from 2010 to 2020. We consider different core groups constituted by countries preferring to trade in a specific currency. We will consider principally two core groups, namely, five Anglo-Saxon countries that prefer to trade in US dollar and the 11 BRICS+ that prefer to trade in a hypothetical currency, hereafter called BRI, pegged to their economies. We determine the trade currency preference of the other countries via a Monte Carlo process depending on the direct transactions between the countries. The results obtained in the frame of this mathematical model show that starting from the year 2014, the majority of the world countries would have preferred to trade in BRI than USD. The Monte Carlo process reaches a steady state with three distinct groups: two groups of countries preferring to trade in whatever is the initial distribution of the trade currency preferences, one in BRI and the other in USD, and a third group of countries swinging as a whole between USD and BRI depending on the initial distribution of the trade currency preferences. We also analyze the battle between three currencies: on one hand, we consider USD, BRI and EUR, the latter currency being pegged by the core group of nine EU countries. We show that the countries preferring EUR are mainly the swing countries obtained in the frame of the two currencies model. On the other hand, we consider USD, CNY (Chinese yuan), OPE, the latter currency being pegged to the major OPEC+ economies for which we try to probe the effective economical influence within international trade. Finally, we present the reduced Google matrix description of the trade relations between the Anglo-Saxon countries and the BRICS+.

Abstract The MetaCore commercial database describes interactions of proteins and other chemical molecules and clusters in the form of directed network between these elements, viewed as nodes. The number of nodes goes beyond 40 thousands with almost 300 thousands links between them. The links have essentially bi-functional nature describing either activation or inhibition actions between proteins. We present here the analysis of statistical properties of this complex network applying the methods of the Google matrix, PageRank and CheiRank algorithms broadly used in the frame of the World Wide Web, Wikipedia, the world trade and other directed networks. We specifically describe the Ising PageRank approach which allows to treat the bi-functional type of protein–protein interactions. We also show that the developed reduced Google matrix algorithm allows to obtain an effective network of interactions inside a specific group of selected proteins. In addition to already known direct protein–protein interactions, this method allows to infer non trivial and unknown interactions between proteins arising from the summation over all the indirect pathways passing via the global bi-functional network. The developed analysis allows to establish an average action of each protein being more oriented to activation or inhibition. We argue that the described Google matrix analysis represents an efficient tool for investigation of influence of specific groups of proteins related to specific diseases.

Growth performance, daily feed intake (FI), and mortality were calculated from 0-14 d postinfection (DPI). Gastrointestinal permeability (GP) was measured on 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9 DPI. The result indicated significant linear responses to the Eimeria challenge dosage in average body weight and body weight gain (P < 0.0001). An interaction between treatment and DPI was observed for FI (P < 0.0001). Feed intake significantly dropped from 4 DPI and did not recover until 12 DPI in the challenged groups. The lowest FI for each of the challenged groups was observed on 5 DPI. Gastrointestinal permeability increased linearly, peaking at 5 DPI, and was recovered back to normal by 9 DPI in the challenged groups. Furthermore, gene expression of tight junction proteins was linearly upregulated by increased Eimeria dosages. The oxidative status of the pullets was lowered in the challenged groups than the nonchallenged control group, whereas the expression of inflammatory and proinflammatory cytokines was upregulated by Eimeria challenge on 6 DPI (P < 0.05). The highest mortality was observed in pullets challenged with the High, followed by the Med-High (P < 0.0001) on 5 DPI. In summary, the mixed Eimeria challenge linearly reduced the growth performance of pullets with an increase in oxidative stress and inflammation. A severe effect of Eimeria on gastrointestinal health was observed on 5 or 6 DPI as suggested by GP, tight junction genes, and mortality results. This study indicates that Eimeria infection can be a threat to gastrointestinal health related issues in pullets.

Abstract We use the United Nations COMTRADE database for analysis of the multiproduct world trade network. With this data, considered for years 2012–2018, we determined the world trade impact of the Kernel of EU 9 countries (KEU9), being Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, considered as one united country. We apply the advanced Google matrix analysis for investigation of the influence of KEU9 and show that KEU9 takes the top trade network rank positions thus becoming the main player of the world trade being ahead of USA and China. Our network analysis provides additional mathematical grounds in favor of the recent proposal (Saint-Etienne in: Osons l’Europe des Nations. Editions de l’Observatoire/Humensis, Paris, 2018) of KEU9 super-union which is based only on historical, political and economy basis.

Abstract We present a model of worldwide crisis contagion based on the Google matrix analysis of the world trade network obtained from the UN Comtrade database. The fraction of bankrupted countries exhibits an on-off phase transition governed by a bankruptcy threshold κ related to the trade balance of the countries. From the Bretton Woods agreement in 1944 till the present day, the US dollar has been the dominant currency in world trade. However, the rise of the Chinese economy has recently led to the emergence of trade transactions in Chinese yuan. Here, we mathematically analyze how the structure of international trade flows would favor a country to trade whether in US dollar or in Chinese yuan. The trade currency preference of a country is modeled as a binary variable with the properties of a spin in an Ising model. The computation of this trade currency preference is based on the world trade network built from the 2010–2020 UN Comtrade data and is determined by two multiplicative factors: the relative weight of trade volume exchanged by the country with its direct trade partners and the relative weight of its trade partners in global international trade. The performed analysis, based on the convergence of the Ising spin interactions, shows that from 2010 to present a transition took place, and the majority of the world countries would now have a preference to trade in Chinese yuan if one only considers the world trade network structure.

This study aimed to investigate the role of the probiotic Aspergillus niger on the production performance, egg quality, and cecal microbial load of Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli in Hy-Line W-36 laying hens. A total of 72, 45-week-old Hy-Line W-36 laying hens were randomly allocated to one of the three dietary treatments with six replicates, and each replicate had four individually caged laying hens (n = 6 and 4 hens/replicate). The hens in each treatment group were fed a corn and soybean meal diet (Control), a diet supplemented with bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) at a rate of 495 mg/kg of feed (Positive Control), or a diet supplemented with Aspergillus niger (Probioist®) at a rate of 220 mg/kg of feed (Probiotic). Supplementing probiotics in the laying hen diet significantly increased egg production at weeks 3 and 6 compared with the Positive Control. Haugh unit, a measure of egg quality, was significantly higher in laying hens fed the probiotic diet compared with the Control or Positive Control at week 10. Furthermore, the Probiotic group had numerically lower cecal microbial loads of pathogenic bacteria (Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli) compared with the Control and Positive Control groups. The results suggest that Aspergillus niger could be used as a probiotic to improve laying hen performance and egg quality.

We consider the network of 5 416 537 articles of English Wikipedia extracted in 2017. Using the recent reduced Google matrix (REGOMAX) method we construct the reduced network of 230 articles (nodes) of infectious diseases and 195 articles of world countries. This method generates the reduced directed network between all 425 nodes taking into account all direct and indirect links with pathways via the huge global network. PageRank and CheiRank algorithms are used to determine the most influential diseases with the top PageRank diseases being Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and Malaria. From the reduced Google matrix, we determine the sensitivity of world countries to specific diseases integrating their influence over all their history including the times of ancient Egyptian mummies. The obtained results are compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) data demonstrating that the Wikipedia network analysis provides reliable results with up to about 80 percent overlap between WHO and REGOMAX analyses.

We analyze how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the trade of products between countries. With this aim, using the United Nations Comtrade database, we perform a Google matrix analysis of the multiproduct World Trade Network (WTN) for the years 2018–2020, comprising the emergence of the COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The applied algorithms—PageRank, CheiRank and the reduced Google matrix—take into account the multiplicity of the WTN links, providing new insights into international trade compared to the usual import–export analysis. These complex networks analysis algorithms establish new rankings and trade balances of countries and products considering all countries on equal grounds, independent of their wealth, and every product on the basis of its relative exchanged volumes. In comparison with the pre-COVID-19 period, significant changes in these metrics occurred for the year 2020, highlighting a major rewiring of the international trade flows induced by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. We define a new PageRank–CheiRank product trade balance, either export or import-oriented, which is significantly perturbed by the pandemic.

This paper concentrates on extracting painting art history knowledge from the network structure of Wikipedia. Therefore, we construct theoretical networks of webpages representing the hyper-linked structure of articles of seven Wikipedia language editions. These seven networks are analyzed to extract the most influential painters in each edition using Google matrix theory. Importance of webpages of over 3000 painters is measured using the PageRank algorithm. The most influential painters are enlisted and their ties are studied with the reduced Google matrix analysis. The reduced Google matrix is a powerful method that captures both direct and hidden interactions between a subset of selected nodes taking into account the indirect links between these nodes via the remaining part of large global network. This method originates from the scattering theory of nuclear and mesoscopic physics and field of quantum chaos. In this paper, we show that it is possible to extract from the components of the reduced Google matrix meaningful information on the ties between these painters. For instance, our analysis groups together painters that belong to the same painting movement and shows meaningful ties between painters of different movements. We also determine the influence of painters on world countries using link sensitivity between Wikipedia articles of painters and countries. The reduced Google matrix approach allows to obtain a balanced view of various cultural opinions of Wikipedia language editions. The world countries with the largest number of top painters of selected seven Wikipedia editions are found to be Italy, France, and Russia. We argue that this approach gives meaningful information about art and that it could be a part of extensive network analysis on human knowledge and cultures.

We apply the recently developed reduced Google matrix algorithm for the analysis of the OECD-WTO World Network of Economic Activities. This approach allows to determine interdependencies and interactions of economy sectors of several countries, including China, Russia and the USA, properly taking into account the influence of all the other world countries and their economic activities. Within this analysis, we also obtain the sensitivity of EU countries’ economies to the petroleum activity sector. We show that this approach takes into account the multiplicity of economical interactions between countries and activity sectors, thus providing a richer analysis compared to the usual export-import analysis.

We study analytically and numerically dynamics and eigenstates of two electrons with Coulomb repulsion on a tight-binding lattice in one and two dimensions. The total energy and momentum of electrons are conserved and we show that for a certain momentum range the dynamics is exactly reduced to an evolution in an effective narrow energy band where the energy conservation forces the two electrons to propagate together through the whole system at moderate or even weak repulsion strength. We argue that such a mechanism of electron pair formation by the repulsive Coulomb interaction is rather generic and that it can be at the origin of unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene.

We study analytically and numerically the thermoelectric properties of a chain of cold atoms with dipole-dipole interactions placed in an optical periodic potential. At small potential amplitudes the chain slides freely that corresponds to the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser phase of integrable curves of a symplectic map. Above a certain critical amplitude the chain is pinned by the lattice being in the cantori Aubry phase. We show that the Aubry phase is characterized by exceptional thermoelectric properties with the figure of merit Z T = 25 being 10 times larger than the maximal value reached in material science experiments. We show that this system is well accessible for magneto-dipole cold atom experiments that opens new prospects for investigations of thermoelectricity.

We study numerically the problem of dynamical thermalization of interacting cold fermionic atoms placed in an isolated Sinai oscillator trap. This system is characterized by a quantum chaos regime for one-particle dynamics. We show that, for a many-body system of cold atoms, the interactions, with a strength above a certain quantum chaos border given by the Åberg criterion, lead to the Fermi−Dirac distribution and relaxation of many-body initial states to the thermalized state in the absence of any contact with a thermostate. We discuss the properties of this dynamical thermalization and its links with the Loschmidt−Boltzmann dispute.

Conclusions: The presence of fast food destinations and unfavorable food stores with alcohol was associated cognitive measures, possibly due to greater social interaction provided in these venues. However, replication of these findings is necessary. Further examination of the potential pathways between the neighborhood environment and cognitive function/WMH may allow the development of potential behavioral, infrastructural, and pharmaceutical interventions to facilitate aging in place and healthy brain aging in older adults, especially in marginal populations that are most at risk. We analyze the Google matrix of directed networks of Wikipedia articles related to eight recent Wikipedia language editions representing different cultures (English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese). Using the reduced Google matrix algorithm, we determine relations and interactions of 23 society concepts and 17 religions represented by their respective articles for each of the eight editions. The effective Markov transitions are found to be more intense inside the two blocks of society concepts and religions while transitions between the blocks are significantly reduced. We establish five poles of influence for society concepts (Law, Society, Communism, Liberalism, Capitalism) as well as five poles for religions (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Chinese folk religion) and determine how they affect other entries. We compute inter-edition correlations for different key quantities providing a quantitative analysis of the differences or the proximity of views of the eight cultures with respect to the selected society concepts and religions.
