The lifetime of a hydrogen bond between water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is found to be considerably longer than that between two water molecules in neat water. This is counter-intuitive because the charge on the oxygen in DMSO is considerably less than that in water. Additionally, the strength of the water–dimethyl sulfoxide (w–D) hydrogen bond is found to be strongly composition dependent; the lifetime of the hydrogen bond is ten times larger at 30% than at very low concentrations. Using computer simulations, we perform microscopic structural and dynamic analysis to find that these anomalies arise at least partly from an "action-at-a-distance" effect where the attraction between the hydrophobic methyl groups results in the self-aggregation of DMSO molecules that "cages" both the rotational and linear motions of the molecules involved. This is reflected in the observed strong correlation of the lifetime with the local coordination number of the associated methyl groups. The elongated w–D h-bond lifetime causes a slowdown of collective dynamics and affects the lifetime of the w–w h-bond. This nonlinear feedback mechanism explains the strong composition dependence of viscosity and is anticipated to play a dominant role in many self-assemblies. Furthermore, the w–D hydrogen bond breaking mechanism changes from low to high DMSO concentration, a phenomenon not anticipated a priori. We introduce a new order parameter-based free energy surface of the bond breaking pathway. We study, through molecular dynamics simulations, three aqueous solutions with one lysozyme protein and three different concentrations of trehalose and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). We analyze the structural and dynamical properties of the protein hydration water upon cooling. We find that trehalose plays a major role in modifying the structure of the network of HBs between water molecules in the hydration layer of the protein. The dynamics of hydration water presents, in addition to the α-relaxation, typical of glass formers, a slower long-time relaxation process, which greatly slows down the dynamics of water, particularly in the systems with trehalose, where it becomes dominant at low temperatures. In all the solutions, we observe, from the behavior of the α-relaxation times, a shift of the Mode Coupling Theory crossover temperature and the fragile-to-strong crossover temperature toward higher values with respect to bulk water. We also observe a strong-to-strong crossover from the temperature behavior of the long-relaxation times. In the aqueous solution with only DMSO, the transition shifts to a lower temperature than in the case with only lysozyme reported in the literature. We observe that the addition of trehalose to the mixture has the opposite effect of restoring the original location of the strong-to-strong crossover. In all the solutions analyzed in this work, the observed temperature of the protein dynamical transition is slightly shifted at lower temperatures than that of the strong-to-strong crossover, but their relative order is the same, showing a correlation between the motion of the protein and that of the hydration water. Potential applications of previously synthesized pillared graphene oxide frameworks with phenyldiboronic acid linkers in the field of the adsorption and separation of polar protic and aprotic liquid solvents have been systematically explored using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Particular attention was initially paid to the adsorption of pure liquid water, methanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The results obtained a significant increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption at low uptake in the case of dimethyl sulfoxide, which is about 17.9 and 26.8 kJ/mol higher than the values corresponding to methanol and water adsorption. These findings indicated that from a thermodynamic point of view, these pillared graphene oxide frameworks could be used in the separation of dimethyl sulfoxide–water liquid mixtures. Systematic grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations were then subsequently performed for dimethyl sulfoxide–water mixtures, with a low dimethyl sulfoxide concentration. The calculated values of the separation selectivity indicate that these materials could have potential applications in the separation of these mixed liquid solvents. Advances in cryobiology techniques commonly target either the cooling or the warming cycle, while little thought has been given to ≪repair≫ protocols applicable during cold storage. In particular, crystallization is the dominant threat to cryopreserved samples but proceeds from small nuclei that are innocuous if further growth is forestalled. To this end, we propose a laser editing technique that locally heats individual crystals above their melting point by a focused nanosecond pulse, followed by amorphization during rapid resolidification. As a reference, we first apply the approach to ice crystals in cryoprotected solution and use Raman confocal mapping to study the deactivation of crystalline order. Then, we examine dimethyl sulfoxide trihydrate crystals that can germinate at low temperatures in maximally freeze concentrated regions, as commonly produced by equilibrium cooling protocols. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique has been widely applied to biosensing technologies for the rapid quantification of biomolecules without enzyme and fluorescent labeling. However, the conventional prism-coupling SPR method generally has a detection area of a few mm2, and the large contribution of the background signal forms a barrier to highly sensitive detection. Based on a highly spatially resolved SPR method, the present study constructed a scanning GC-SPR imaging instrument using an objective lens with a high numerical aperture and a plasmonic chip that could be used for grating-coupled SPR. Focusing light on the diffraction limit can suppress background signals and improve detection sensitivity. SPR imaging can also be performed by scanning a focal spot. Using this method, the refractive index of a mixture of water and dimethyl sulfoxide was measured with a detection accuracy of 2.43 × 10−3 RIU. Polydopamine films prepared with a thickness of <5 nm were also measured, and each film thickness was evaluated with high sensitivity from the effective refractive index detected in a small area of <1 µm2. Two-dimensional terahertz–infrared–visible (2D TIRV) spectroscopy directly measures the coupling between quantum high-frequency vibrations and classical low-frequency modes of molecular motion. In addition to coupling strength, the signal intensity in 2D TIRV spectroscopy can also depend on the selection rules of the excited transitions. Here, we explore the selection rules in 2D TIRV spectroscopy by studying the coupling between the high-frequency CH3 stretching and low-frequency vibrations of liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Different excitation pathways are addressed using variations in laser pulse timing and different polarizations of exciting pulses and detected signals. The DMSO signals generated via different excitation pathways can be readily distinguished in the spectrum. The intensities of different excitation pathways vary unequally with changes in polarization. We explain how this difference stems from the intensities of polarized and depolarized Raman and hyper-Raman spectra of high-frequency modes. With DMSO both as the source of -SMe unit and solvent, an efficient and green electrochemical methylthiolation reaction of imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles was developed. The transformation was performed at room temperature in 8 h under external transition metal- and oxidant-free condition. Moreover, the 2,3-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles and 2-phenylbenzo[d]imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole also proceeded smoothly. An efficient heterogeneous copper-catalyzed cascade coupling/condensation/deacylation reaction of 2′-halotrifluoroacetanilides with β-keto esters has been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly in anhydrous dimethyl sulfoxide at 80–90 °C using Cs 2 CO 3 as base and 10–20 mol% SBA-15-immobilized l -proline–CuI complex [SBA-15– l -Proline–CuI] as catalyst and provides a general and practical method for the assembly of a variety of polysubstituted 2-(trifluoromethyl)indoles in good to high yields. Currently, flexible electronic devices based on ionic conductive hydrogels are receiving widespread attention in the field of human health detection. In this paper, a facile one‐pot method is proposed for the preparation of ionic organic hydrogels, in which polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), cellulose nanofiber (CNF), and graphene oxide (GO) are dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide‐water (DMSO/H2O), and the organic hydrogel is obtained by a freezing–thawing process. The ionic organic hydrogel with excellent properties is then prepared by soaking the hydrogel in a calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution using a salting‐out strategy. The ionic organic hydrogel possesses good tensile (283%) and strength (0.3 MPa), super electrical conductivity (7.72 S/m), and high strain sensitivity [gauge factor (GF) up to 5.22]. Meanwhile, it has excellent anti‐freezing and moisturizing properties. In addition, the ionic organic hydrogels can be used in flexible strain sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators to realize real‐time monitoring of human motion, traceless writing, and energy conversion. It is foreseen that the prepared ionic organic hydrogels provide a feasible method for realizing the long‐term use of wearable electronic devices in extreme environments and daily life. Plant melanin, a natural pigment, has gained significant attention recently due to its potential therapeutic and industrial applications. In this study, melanin pigments were extracted from Nigerseed hulls (NH) via alkali and acid extraction methods, followed by acid hydrolysis, organic solvent treatment, and repeated precipitation. The solubility of NH melanin was assessed, revealing solubility in alkali and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) but insolubility in other common organic solvents. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to measure the purity of NH melanin in comparison to standard melanin, while elemental analysis indicated a similarity between melanin extracted from nigerseed hulls and the standard counterpart. LC-MS data revealed a molecular weight of NH melanin. Furthermore, the stability of melanin was evaluated under varying conditions including temperature, oxidants, reducing agents, light exposure, and metal ion presence. Results demonstrated significant effects of Mg2+, Cu2+, and Fe2+ metal ions on melanin stability, with a minor effect observed for Ca2+, while sodium hyposulfite was found to destabilize the pigments. Our findings suggest that nigerseed hulls hold promise as a novel source for efficient melanin production, with potential applications in the food sector, food packaging, and biomedical fields. Introduction Adverse reactions (ARs) occur during infusion of thawed hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) either due to infusion or its contents. There is sparse literature on it in the world and none in India. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed ARs occurring during and within 1 hour of infusion of thawed HPCs. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of adverse reactions associated with the infusion of cryopreserved hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) and to categorize the types of adverse reactions observed in HPC transplant recipients during its infusion. Materials and Methods This study was done in a tertiary-care center, between 2019 and 2022. Data collected included age, gender, diagnosis, specifications of contents of infusion product (volume of product, volume of dimethyl sulfoxide per kg body weight, total nucleated cell count per microliter, and viability of CD 34+ cells), pretreatment given, and ARs, if any from the procedure records and the hospital information system. Results The present study included 55 transplant patients, and the commonest diagnosis was Hodgkin lymphoma. All were prophylactically hydrated and premedicated as per institutional protocol. AR was seen in 56.36% (n = 31); the commonest type of ARs was nausea (n = 26) followed by vomiting (n = 13), abdominal pain (n = 4), shivering (n = 3), transient tachycardia (n = 2), transient hypotension (n = 2), and hematuria (n = 1). All ARs were managed clinically by giving symptomatic treatment. No patients required intensive care, and there were no deaths or aborted procedures. Characteristics of infusion products had no significant correlation to ARs. Conclusions To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first such study from India. We report an overall incidence of ARs of 56.36%, which is similar to the previously published data on ARs during thawed HPC infusions. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have gained considerable attention due to their superior properties, i.e., high aspect ratio, high modulus and strength, low density, and have been widely studied as a key component in the development of green nanocomposites. In this study, electrospinning of CNC-loaded polymer blend of polylactide (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is reported for the first time. The polymer blend ratio and solvent ratio of dichloromethane (DCM)/ dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was optimized based on electrospinnability of the developed solution formulations, and successful fabrication of homogeneous bead-free nanofibers. Subsequently, CNCs were incorporated into PLA/PBAT polymer blends at various loading levels, i.e., from 1 to 5 wt%, in order to explore the influence of CNC incorporation on the key properties of PLA/PBAT nanocomposite nanofibrous webs, i.e., morphological and chemical structure, melting and crystallization behavior, thermal and hydrolytic degradation, mechanical performance and wettability characteristic. The main finding of this study was that well-distributed nanoparticles in the nanofibrous webs led to improved mechanical, thermal and wettability properties, even with a low CNC loading level, i.e., 1 wt%. The outcomes provide a groundwork for future studies on the design and fabrication of biodegradable nanocomposite nanofibers from PLA/PBAT blends for a variety of applications including tissue engineering, drug delivery, active/ intelligent food packaging, by clearly elucidating the structure–property relationships. Ultrasound‐assisted dehydration of fructose into 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) and subsequent oxidation to furandicarboxylic acid (2, 5‐FDCA) is studied in the current work with the main objective being to elucidate the effectiveness of ultrasound for intensified synthesis. The effect of reaction parameters like ultrasound power, duty cycle, reaction time, reaction temperature, solid to solvent ratio, and fructose concentration on the dehydration of fructose into 5‐HMF has been studied. Optimized conditions established were ultrasonic power of 140 W, duty cycle of 60%, reaction time of 60 min, temperature of 100°C, and fructose:dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) ratio of 3:100 (g/mL), which resulted in the highest 5‐HMF yield of 96% and fructose conversion of 100%. The conventional method carried out at optimized conditions resulted in only 13.5% as 5‐HMF yield. The obtained 5‐HMF was further oxidized to FDCA using Pd/C as the catalyst, H2O/DMSO as solvent, and K2CO3 as a base also using ultrasonic irradiation at 140 W power and 22 kHz frequency in the presence and absence of O2 as oxidant. 100% conversion of 5‐ HMF was obtained in 30 min and 4 h using ultrasound in the presence of O2 and in absence of O2, respectively. 75% conversion of 5‐HMF was observed using the conventional method in 5 h in the presence of O2. Plastic recycling is gaining traction to reduce the demand for fossil resources for plastic production. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), mainly used in the packaging and textile sectors, is often isolated in the sinking fraction during the density-based separation of mixed plastic waste streams. The heterogeneity of the sinking fraction makes direct mechanical recycling of PET impossible. Therefore, neutral hydrolysis of PET was investigated in the presence of other polymer contaminants to study their impact on the neutral hydrolysis of PET. PA6, PC, POM, and PVC were found to decompose during hydrolysis, whereas ABS, PMMA and a mixture of PE, PP and PS was chemically inert during the hydrolysis treatment. The subsequent BHET synthesis with excess ethylene glycol was performed directly on a mix of the polymer contaminated hydrolysis products or a hydrolyzed post-consumer plastic waste fraction. BHET was successfully formed in the plethora of decomposition products in the synthesis, and a subsequent recrystallization recovered the BHET in high purity with only water being used as solvent. This demonstrated a robust method to handle PET fractions in mixed plastic waste that can be applied without purification prior to BHET synthesis – enabling chemical recycling of PET. Background: To investigate the preventive efficacy of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on alveolar bone destruction in rats with periodontitis. Methods: Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, experimental periodontitis (Ep), and Ep-MSM. Periodontitis was induced by placing 4.0 silk sutures in the subparamarginal position on the necks of the mandibular first molars and applying the suture for 5 weeks. The Ep-MSM group was given 500 mg/body weight/day MSM intraperitoneally for 35 days. At the end of the study, bilateral mandibular samples were taken. Periodontal bone loss was measured through histologic sections. Histomorphometric and immunohistochemical (receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG)) evaluations were performed on right mandibular tissue samples, and biochemical (interleukin (IL)-1 beta (β)/IL-10, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), oxidative stress index (OSI)) evaluations were performed on left mandibular tissue samples. Results: No significant difference was found between the groups in IL-1β and IL-1β/IL-10 values ​​(p > 0.05). A significant decrease in IL-10 levels was observed in the Ep-MSM and Ep groups compared with the control group (p < 0.05). MDA levels significantly increased in the Ep and Ep-MSM groups compared with the control group, and GSH levels significantly decreased in the Ep group compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). OSI values ​​were significantly higher only in the Ep group (p < 0.05). RANKL levels showed a significant increase in the Ep group compared with the other groups. OPG levels were significantly increased only in the Ep-MSM group (p < 0.05). Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an aprotic solvent widely used in ecotoxicological assays, suitable for solubilizing a wide range of polar and non-polar substances. The aim of this study was to analyze the species-specific biological response of the model organisms Daphnia magna and Ceriodaphnia dubia to 0.5% DMSO, under feeding conditions. Both species were exposed in culture medium, with or without 0.5% DMSO, to the unicellular algae (Raphidocelis subcapitata, Tetradesmus obliquus), either individually or in combination; the algae were pretreated or not pretreated with 0.5% DMSO. The exposure was carried out in acute (24 h and 48 h) and chronic (72 h and 168 h) ecotoxicity tests. The experimental results suggest that a lower DMSO concentration limit (<0.5%) would be appropriate for C. dubia due to its greater sensitivity to the solvent. Finally, considering the ingestion of DMSO-contaminated algae, it can be concluded that, under certain experimental conditions, the solvent ingested through the diet may significantly affect the mortality of both D. magna and C. dubia. Preservation and long-term storage of readily available cell-laden tissue-engineered products are major challenges in expanding their applications in healthcare. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the development of off-the-shelf tissue-engineered products using the cryobioprinting approach. Here, bioinks are incorporated with cryoprotective agents (CPAs) to allow the fabrication of cryopreservable tissue constructs. Although this method has shown potential in the fabrication of cryopreservable tissue-engineered products, the impact of the CPAs on the viscoelastic behavior and printability of the bioinks at cryo conditions remains unexplored. In this study, we have evaluated the influence of CPAs such as glycerol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the rheological properties of pre-crosslinked alginate bioinks for cryoprinting applications. DMSO-incorporated bioinks showed a reduction in viscosity and yield stress, while the addition of glycerol improved both the properties due to interactions with the calcium chloride used for pre-crosslinking. Further, tube inversion and printability experiments were performed to identify suitable concentrations and cryobioprinting conditions for bioinks containing CPAs & pre-crosslinked with CaCl2. Finally, based on the printability analysis & cell recovery results, 10% glycerol was used for cryobioprinting and preservation of cell-laden constructs at −80 °C and the viability of cells within the printed structures were evaluated after recovery. Cell viability results indicate that the addition of 10% glycerol to the pre-crosslinked bioink significantly improved cell viability compared to bioinks without CPAs, confirming the suitability of the developed bioink combination to fabricate tissue constructs for on-demand applications. Background: Paraquat (PQ) is a widely used pesticide, can cause severe intoxication and respiratory failure. Myrtenol (Mrl), an essential oil derived in various plants, exhibits several biological properties, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. This study aims to investigate the protective potential of Mrl against oxidative stress and inflammation caused by PQ exposure. Methods: Twenty-five Wistar albino rats were divided into the following groups (n = 5 in each group): a control group (treated by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)), a PQ group (exposed to 54 mg/m³ aerosol PQ), and two treatment groups that were exposed to PQ aerosol and administered oral Mrl at doses of 25 mg/kg/day and 50 mg/kg/day, respectively. The final group was exposed to PQ aerosol and treated with oral dexamethasone at a dose of 0.03 mg/kg/day. Various hematological, oxidative, inflammatory, and pathological indices were measured at the conclusion of the treatment period. Results: PQ decreases the levels or activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and Thiol, while increasing the levels or activities of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Mrl restored activites of SOD, and CAT, as well as thiol levels to near-control values while reducing TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA levels. Pathological studies further confirmed the therapeutic effects of Mrl. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate the promising therapeutic effects of Mrl against inhaled PQ in rats. Background and Objectives Materials and Methods Results Conclusion The most widely used method of platelet cryopreservation requires the addition of 5%–6% dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO), followed by its pre‐freeze removal via centrifugation, to minimize toxicity. However, this adds complexity to the pre‐freeze and post‐thaw processing. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to simplify platelet cryopreservation by reducing the DMSO concentration and omitting the requirement for pre‐transfusion removal.Apheresis platelets were cryopreserved at −80°C according to standard blood‐banking methods using 5.5% DMSO, with centrifugation, pre‐freeze removal of DMSO and reconstitution in plasma following thawing (standard). In parallel, doses of DMSO (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 5.5%) were tested without centrifugation and reconstitution (no‐wash). In vitro platelet quality was assessed by flow cytometry, aggregation, viscoelastic testing (thromboelastography [TEG]) and clot retraction.Many in vitro platelet quality parameters showed DMSO dose dependency using the no‐wash protocol (recovery, annexin‐V, TEG maximum amplitude [MA]). Platelets frozen using the no‐wash method with 3% DMSO showed a higher abundance of GPIbα (3% DMSO no‐wash median fluorescence intensity [MFI]: 228 ± 16; standard MFI: 184 ± 16; p = 0.0016) and less degranulation (reduced P‐selectin‐positive platelets and concentration of supernatant P‐selectin) than platelets frozen using the standard method. All functional properties measured were comparable to those of platelets frozen using the standard method.This study shows that improvements in cryopreserved platelet quality parameters can be obtained by removing the centrifugation processes (standard vs. 5.5% DMSO no‐wash). A reduction in DMSO to 3% supports quality parameters, and if shown to be clinically acceptable, this cryopreservation method could improve platelet accessibility, as it is simpler and cheaper than the standard method. Microorganisms cause microbiologically influenced corrosion, for the prevention of which bactericide inhibitors are used. The aim of the work was to study in vitro the sensitivity of SRB Desulfovibrio oryzae NUChC SRB1 to different concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and evaluate the indicators of the microbial corrosion of steel induced by this bacterium in the presence of the pharmaceutical drugs DMSO and paracetamol. The sensitivity of SRB D. oryzae to 1–100% DMSO (v/v) was studied via the dilution method in Postgate's "C" liquid medium. The corrosion activity of D. oryzae against steel 3 was investigated under DMSO and paracetamol treatment at a final concentration of 45% (v/v) and 0.2% (w/v), respectively, according to the ability of bacteria to form a biofilm on the surface of the steel samples (via the crystal violet method) and the effect on the corrosion rate (via the gravimetric method). It was revealed that DMSO affected D. oryzae NUChC SRB1 and exhibited bactericidal properties (at a concentration range of 10–100%, v/v) and antibiofilm properties (at a concentration of 45%, v/v). Despite its antibiofilm properties confirmed by the reduction in bacterial biofilm mass, anticorrosion features were not observed in the model 35-day conditions of the microbial corrosion of steel in an anaerobic environment with bacterial sulfate reduction. Paracetamol (0.2%, w/v) did not affect biofilm formation by SRB under these conditions, and significantly contributed to an increase in the rate of the microbial corrosion of steel. The prospect of further research is to assess the effect of DMSO and paracetamol on the indicators of microbial corrosion induced by SRB under the influence of the concentrations of these compounds found in wastewater, to clarify the possible additional causes of damage to the equipment of treatment plants. Further research should also be directed at investigating the antimicrobial properties of complexes of compounds with DMSO, which should be considered as an ecological solution to the problem of microbiologically influenced corrosion prevention. Solvent environment on third-order nonlinear optical (TNLO) features of triarylmethane dye namely, basic blue 7 in different solvents is reported herein using 650 nm diode laser with continuous wave mode. The basic blue 7 dye is dissolved in different solvent media including ethanol, methanol, dimethyl formamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The influence of solvent characteristics such as solvent polarizability and dipole moment on solute molecule is discussed. TNLO characteristics such as nonlinear optical index of refraction, nonlinear optical coefficient of absorption, real and imaginary components of the TNLO susceptibility are measured to be the order of 10‒7 cm2/W, 10‒3 cm/W, 10‒6 esu and 10‒7 esu, respectively. The dye exhibits large TNLO susceptibility by dissolving in DMSO. The TNLO susceptibility of basic blue 7 dye is measured to be the order of 10‒6 esu. The overall results revealed that the basic blue 7 dye is suitable material for optoelectronics applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
