In the framework of the model of a spatially non-uniform Bose-Einstein condensate with helicoidal spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we find abnormal Peregrine solitons (PSs) on top of flat and periodic backgrounds, with ultra-high amplitudes. We explore the roles of the SO coupling strength and helicity pitch in the creation of these anomalously tall PSs and find that their amplitude, normalized to the background height, attains indefinitely large values. The investigation of the modulation instability (MI) in the same system demonstrates that these PSs exist in a range of relatively weak MI, maintaining the feasibility of their experimental observation., Comment: To be published as a Letter in Phys. In designing material functionalities for transition metal oxides, lattice structure and d-orbital occupancy are key determinants. However, the modulation of these two factors is inherently limited by the need to balance thermodynamic stability, growth kinetics, and stoichiometry precision, particularly for metastable phases. We introduce a methodology, namely the gigantic-oxidative atomic-layer-by-layer epitaxy (GOALL-Epitaxy), enhancing oxidation power 3-4 orders of magnitude beyond conventional pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and oxide molecular beam epitaxy (OMBE), while ensuring atomic-layer-by-layer growth of designed complex structures. Thermodynamic stability is markedly augmented with stronger oxidation at elevated temperatures, whereas growth kinetics is sustained by laser ablation at lower temperatures. We demonstrate the accurate growth of complex nickelates and cuprates, especially an artificially designed structure with alternating single and double NiO2 layers possessing distinct nominal d-orbital occupancy, as a parent of high-temperature superconductor. The GOALL-Epitaxy enables material discovery within the vastly broadened growth parameter space.

The pairing mechanism behind the monolayer FeSe is one essential question for iron-based superconductors. In this work, we show the sublattice degree of freedoms of monolayer FeSe plays a special role in its pairing properties, namely the sublattice dichotomy. The high-quality monolayer FeSe samples with atomic flat $1\times1$ topography on the SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. By comparing the tunneling spectra at $\alpha$ and $\beta$ Fe sublattices, we find the coherence peak of $\alpha$-Fe at the inner gap $+V_i$ is higher than $\beta$-Fe while the coherence peak of $\beta$-Fe at $-V_i$ is higher than $\alpha$-Fe with a similar amount. We also observed a reversed effect at the outer gap $\pm V_o$. We propose the $\eta$-pairing mechanism between $k$ and $-k+Q$ is the key mechanism for this unconventional sublattice dichotomy effect., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The intrinsic magnetic order, large topological-magnetic gap and rich topological phases make MnBi2Te4 a wonderful platform to study exotic topological quantum states such as axion insulator and Chern insulator. To realize and manipulate these topological phases in a MnBi2Te4 thin film, precise manipulation of the electric field across the film is essential, which requires a dual-gate structure. In this work, we achieve dual-gate tuning of MnBi2Te4 thin films grown with molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3(111) substrates by applying the substrate and an AlOx layer as the gate dielectrics of bottom and top gates, respectively. Under magnetic field of 9T and temperature of 20 mK, the Hall and longitudinal resistivities of the films show inversed gate-voltage dependence, for both top- and bottom-gates, signifying the existence of the dissipationless edge state contributed by Chern insulator phase in the ferromagnetic configuration. The maximum of the Hall resistivity only reaches 0.8 h/e2, even with dual-gate tuning, probably due to the high density of bulk carriers introduced by secondary phases. In the antiferromagnetic state under zero magnetic field, the films show normal insulator behavior. The discovery of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas and low carrier density superconductivity in multiple SrTiO$_3$-based heterostructures has stimulated intense interest in the surface properties of SrTiO$_3$. The recent discovery of high-T$_c$ superconductivity in the monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ aroused the upsurge and underscored the atomic precision probe of the surface structure. By performing atomically resolved cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy characterization on dual-TiO$_{2}$-${\delta}$-terminated SrTiO$_3$(001) surfaces with ($\sqrt{13}$ $\times$ $\sqrt{13}$), c(4 $\times$ 2), mixed (2 $\times$ 1), and (2 $\times$ 2) reconstructions, we disclosed universally broken rotational symmetry and contrasting bias- and temperature-dependent electronic states for apical and equatorial oxygen sites. With the sequentially evolved surface reconstructions and simultaneously increasing equatorial oxygen vacancies, the surface anisotropy reduces, and the work function lowers. Intriguingly, unidirectional stripe orders appear on the c(4 $\times$ 2) surface, whereas local (4 $\times$ 4) order emerges and eventually forms long-range unidirectional c(4 $\times$ 4) charge order on the (2 $\times$ 2) surface. This work reveals robust unidirectional charge orders induced by oxygen vacancies due to strong and delicate electronic-lattice interaction under broken rotational symmetry, providing insights into understanding the complex behaviors in perovskite oxide-based heterostructures.

The interface-enhanced superconductivity in monolayer iron selenide (FeSe) films on SrTiO3 has been actively pursued in the past decade. Although a synergistic effect between interfacial charge transfer and interfacial electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is proposed to be responsible for the mechanism, the microscopic nature of the interfacial EPC in the enhancement of superconductivity remains highly controversial. Herein we experimentally reveal that a coherent optical phonon mode at 4.2 THz from the SrTiO3 substrate couples to FeSe electrons and modulates the quasiparticle relaxations using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. This mode originates from the antiferrodistortive (AFD) transition in SrTiO3 and is significantly stronger in the presence of monolayer FeSe than that in purely FeTe-capped Nb-doped SrTiO3. Pump fluence and temperature-dependent spectroscopy measurements suggest that SrTiO3 substrate facilitates the stabilization of FeSe structure and possibly prevents the occurrence of nematic phase transition, supporting that SrTiO3 substrate modifies the electronic structure of monolayer FeSe through a strong interfacial EPC strength as large as 0.77. Our results provide unprecedented direct evidence that the strong coupling of SrTiO3 coherent phonon to FeSe electrons is indeed responsible for the high-temperature superconductivity in monolayer FeSe and SrTiO3 heterostructure.

The interfacial FeSe/TiO$_{2-\delta}$ coupling induces high-temperature superconductivity in monolayer FeSe films. Using cryogenic atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we obtained atomic-site dependent surface density of states, work function, and pairing gap in the monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$(001)-($\sqrt{13} \times \sqrt{13}$)-33.7${\deg}$ surface. Our results disclosed the out-of-plane Se-Fe-Se triple layer gradient variation, switched DOS for Fe sites on and off TiO$_{5\square}$, and inequivalent Fe sublattices, which gives global spatial modulation of pairing gap contaminant with the ($\sqrt{13} \times \sqrt{13}$) pattern. Moreover, the coherent lattice coupling induces strong inversion asymmetry and in-plane anisotropy in the monolayer FeSe, which is demonstrated to correlate with the particle-hole asymmetry in coherence peaks. The strong atomic-scale correlations in lattice and electronic structure, and pairing gap in particular, put constraints on exploring the unconventional high-temperature superconductivity emerging from interface coupling, e.g., strong demand for atomic-scale interface engineering and characterization.

To study controlled evolution of non-autonomous matter-wave solitons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with spatiotemporal modulation, we focus on a system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with space-time-dependent external potentials and temporally modulated gain/loss distributions. An integrability condition and a non-isospectral Lax pair for the coupled GP equations are obtained. Using it, we derive an infinite set of dynamical invariants, the first two of which are the mass and momentum. The Darboux transform is used to generate one- and two-soliton solutions. Under the action of different external potentials and gain/loss distributions, various solutions for controlled non-autonomous matter-wave solitons of both ferromagnetic and polar types are obtained, such as self-compressed, snake-like and stepwise solitons, and as well as breathers. In particular, the formation of states resembling rogue waves, under the action of a sign-reversible gain-loss distribution, is demonstrated too. Shape-preserving and changing interactions between two non-autonomous matter-wave solitons and bound states of solitons are addressed too. In this context, spin switching arises in the polar-ferromagnetic interaction. Ultrathin films of intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 exhibit fascinating quantum properties such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator state. In this work, we systematically investigate the evolution of the electronic structure of MnBi2Te4 thin films. With increasing film thickness, the electronic structure changes from an insulator-type with a large energy gap to one with in-gap topological surface states, which is, however, still drastically different from the bulk material. By surface doping of alkali-metal atoms, a Rashba split band gradually emerges and hybridizes with topological surface states, which not only reconciles the puzzling difference between the electronic structures of the bulk and thin film MnBi2Te4 but also provides an interesting platform to establish Rashba ferromagnet that is attractive for (quantum) anomalous Hall effect. Determining the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ is the key to understanding the enhanced pairing mechanism; furthermore, it guides exploring new superconductors with high transition temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$). Despite significant efforts, it remains controversial whether the symmetry is the sign-preserving $s$- or the sign-changed $s_{\pm}$-wave. Here, we investigate the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe from a topological point of view. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we have systematically characterized the superconducting states at isolated edges and corners of single-layer FeSe. The tunneling spectra collected at edges and corners exhibit full gap and substantial dip, respectively, demonstrating the absence of topologically non-trivial edge/corner modes. According to the theoretical calculation, these spectroscopic features are strong evidence for the sign-preserving $s$-wave pairing.

Recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline superconductors has provided a promising platform to investigate novel quantum physics and potential applications. To reveal essential quantum phenomena therein, ultralow temperature transport investigation on high quality ultrathin superconducting films is critically required, although it has been quite challenging experimentally. Here we report a systematic transport study on the ultrathin crystalline PdTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Interestingly, a new type of Ising superconductivity in 2D centrosymmetric materials is revealed by the detection of large in-plane critical field more than 7 times Pauli limit. Remarkably, in perpendicular magnetic field, we provide solid evidence of anomalous metallic state characterized by the resistance saturation at low temperatures with high quality filters. The robust superconductivity with intriguing quantum phenomena in the macro-size ambient-stable ultrathin PdTe2 films remains almost the same for 20 months, showing great potentials in electronic and spintronic applications., Comment: The final version of the manuscript can be found in Nano Letters

Transition metal oxides of the $4d$ and $5d$ block have recently become the targets of materials discovery, largely due to their strong spin-orbit coupling that can generate exotic magnetic and electronic states. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$, a new cubic pyrochlore oxide based on $4d^5$ Rh$^{4+}$ and characterizations via thermodynamic, electrical transport, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetic contribution, while heat capacity shows an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient, $\gamma$ = 21.8(1) mJ/mol-Rh K$^2$. Muon spin relaxation measurements confirm that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ remains paramagnetic down to 2 K. Taken in combination, these three measurements suggest that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ is a correlated paramagnetic metal with a Wilson ratio of $R_W = 2.5$. However, electric transport measurements present a striking contradiction as the resistivity of Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ is observed to monotonically increase with decreasing temperature, indicative of a nonmetallic state. Furthermore, although the magnitude of the resistivity is that of a semiconductor, the temperature dependence does not obey any conventional form. Thus, we propose that Lu$_2$Rh$_2$O$_7$ may belong to the same novel class of non-Fermi liquids as the nonmetallic metal FeCrAs., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We prepared single unit cell FeSe films on GaO$_{2-\delta}$ terminated perovskite NdGaO$_{3}$(110) substrates and performed ex situ transport and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements on the FeTe protected films. Our experimental measurements showed that the single unit cell FeSe films interfaced with GaO$_{2-{\delta}}$ layer are electron doped via interface charge transfer. Most importantly, this type of heterostructure can host interface enhanced superconductivity with an onset temperature of about 28 K, which is much higher than the value of 8 K in bulk FeSe. Our work indicates that FeSe/GaO$_{2-{\delta}}$can be a comparative platform with the FeSe/TiO$_{2-{\delta}}$ family for understanding the mechanism of interface enhanced high temperature superconductivity.

We investigated the magnetic properties of (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO with $x$ varying from 0.005 to 0.05 at an external magnetic field of 1000 Oe. For doping levels of $x$ $\leq$ 0.01, the system remains paramagnetic down to the lowest measurable temperature of 2 K. Only when the doping level increases to $x$ = 0.02 does the ferromagnetic ordering appear. Our analysis indicates that antiferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate for $x$ $\leq$ 0.01, as shown by the negative Weiss temperature fitted from the magnetization data. The Weiss temperature becomes positive, i.e., ferromagnetic coupling starts to dominate, for $x$ $\geq$ 0.02. The Mn-Mn spin interaction parameter $\mid$$2J/k_B$$\mid$ is estimated to be in the order of 10 K for both $x$ $\leq$ 0.01 (antiferromagnetic ordered state) and $x$ $\geq$ 0.02 (ferromagnetic ordered state). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in carrier-mediated ferromagnetic systems., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors (DMSs) that combine the properties of semiconductors with ferromagnetism have potential application in spin-sensitive electronics (spintronics) devices. The search for DMS materials exploded after the observation of ferromagnetic ordering in III-V (Ga,Mn)As films. Recently, a series of DMS compounds isostructural to iron-based superconductors have been reported. Among them, the highest Curie temperature $T_C$ of 230 K has been achieved in (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_2$As$_2$. However, most DMSs, including (Ga,Mn)As, are p-type, i.e., the carriers that mediate ferromagnetism are holes. For practical applications, DMS with n-type carriers are also advantageous. Here we report the successful synthesis of a II-II-V diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with n-type carriers, Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$. Magnetization measurements show that the ferromagnetic transition occurs up to $T_{C} \sim$ 45 K. Hall effect and Seebeck effect measurements jointly confirm that the dominant carriers are electrons. Through muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), a volume sensitive magnetic probe, we have also confirmed that the ferromagnetism in Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$ is intrinsic and the internal field is static., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Metal-to-insulator transitions (MITs) are a dramatic manifestation of strong electron correlations in solids1. The insulating phase can often be suppressed by quantum tuning, i.e. varying a nonthermal parameter such as chemical composi- tion or pressure, resulting in a zero-temperature quantum phase transition (QPT) to a metallic state driven by quantum fluctuations, in contrast to conventional phase transitions driven by thermal fluctuations. Theories of exotic phenomena known to occur near the Mott QPT such as quantum criticality and high-temperature superconductivity often assume a second-order QPT, but direct experimental evidence for either first- or second-order behavior at the magnetic QPT associated with the Mott transition has been scarce and further masked by the superconducting phase in unconventional superconductors. Most measurements of QPTs have been performed by volume-integrated probes, such as neutron scattering, magnetization, and transport, in which discontinuous behavior, phase separation, and spatially inhomogeneous responses are averaged and smeared out, leading at times to misidentification as continuous second-order transitions. Here, we demonstrate through muon spin relaxation/rotation (MuSR) experiments on two archetypal Mott insulating systems, composition-tuned RENiO3 (RE=rare earth element) and pressured-tuned V2O3, that the QPT from antiferromagnetic insulator to paramagnetic metal is first-order: the magnetically ordered volume fraction decreases to zero at the QPT, resulting in a broad region of intrinsic phase separation, while the ordered magnetic moment retains its full value across the phase diagram until it is suddenly destroyed at the QPT.
