1. Fatigue reliability analysis of offshore wind turbines under combined wind-wave excitation via DPIM

Abstract

As offshore wind turbines develop into deepwater operations, accurately quantifying the impact of stochastic excitations in complex sea environments on offshore wind turbines and conducting structural fatigue reliability analysis has become challenging. In this paper, based on long-term wind-wave reanalysis data from a site in the South China Sea, a novel direct probability integral method (DPIM) is developed for the stochastic response and fatigue reliability analyses of the key components for the floating offshore wind turbine structures under combined wind-wave excitation. A 5MW floating offshore wind turbine is considered as the research object, and a fully coupled dynamic response analysis of the wind turbine system is conducted to calculate the short-term fatigue damage value of tower base and blade root. The DPIM is applied to calculate the fatigue reliability of the wind turbine structure. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are validated by comparing the obtained results with those of Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, the results indicate that the fatigue life of floating offshore wind turbine structures under combined wind-wave excitation meets the design requirements. Abstract

[Objective] The intensification of global change and human activities have increasingly exposed the complexity and vulnerability of grassland social-ecological systems (SES). Systematically analyzing the coupling and feedback mechanisms, driving mechanisms, and management strategies of grassland SES is crucial for enhancing its resilience and achieving synergies between socioeconomic and ecological benefits. [Methods] This article reviewed the current research theories, components, coupling and feedback mechanisms, driving mechanisms, and conservation management of grassland SES. [Results] The theories of grassland SES is evolving from single-discipline ecological research to complex interdisciplinary studies; soil, water, vegetation, livestock, and herders are the primary components of grassland SES; the research on coupling mechanism and feedback mechanism of grassland SES has evolved in terms of subjects, methods, and perspectives; human activities and climate change are the main drivers of grassland SES change; ecological restoration and rehabilitation, the establishment of protected areas, and enclosure for grazing prohibition are the primary measures for the conservation management of grassland SES. Innovation of socioeconomic systems plays a key role in grassland restoration. [Conclusion] In the context of increasingly complex human-environment relationships and global change uncertainties, future research should develop cross-scale and cross-regional comprehensive research theories; external policies should be incorporated into the components of grassland SES to better understand dynamic mechanisms; and future studies should also deepen the analysis of multi-factor interactions and policy applicability, optimizing management strategies to ensure the coordinated development of ecological, economic, and social benefits in pastoral regions.

Abstract

Greenspaces are important for sustaining healthy urban environments and their human populations. Yet their capacity to support multiple ecosystem services simultaneously (multiservices) compared with nearby natural ecosystems remains virtually unknown. We conducted a global field survey in 56 urban areas to investigate the influence of urban greenspaces on 23 soil and plant attributes and compared them with nearby natural environments. We show that, in general, urban greenspaces and nearby natural areas support similar levels of soil multiservices, with only six of 23 attributes (available phosphorus, water holding capacity, water respiration, plant cover, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and arachnid richness) significantly greater in greenspaces, and one (available ammonium) greater in natural areas. Further analyses showed that, although natural areas and urban greenspaces delivered a similar number of services at low (>25% threshold) and moderate (>50%) levels of functioning, natural systems supported significantly more functions at high (>75%) levels of functioning. Management practices (mowing) played an important role in explaining urban ecosystem services, but there were no effects of fertilisation or irrigation. Some services declined with increasing site size, for both greenspaces and natural areas. Our work highlights the fact that urban greenspaces are more similar to natural environments than previously reported and underscores the importance of managing urban greenspaces not only for their social and recreational values, but for supporting multiple ecosystem services on which soils and human well-being depends.

Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract

Woody plants are encroaching across terrestrial ecosystems globally, and this has dramatic effects on how these systems function and the livelihoods of producers who rely on the land to support livestock production. Consequently, the removal of woody plants is promoted widely in the belief that it will reinstate former grasslands or open savanna. Despite this popular management approach to encroachment, we still have a relatively poor understanding of the effects of removal on society, and of alternative management practices that could balance the competing needs of pastoral production, biodiversity conservation and cultural values. This information is essential for maintaining both ecological and societal benefits in encroached systems under predicted future climate changes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the social–ecological perspectives of woody encroachment based on recent studies and global meta‐analyses by assessing the ecological impacts of encroachment and its effects on sustainable development goals (SDGs) when woody plants are retained and when they are removed. We propose a working definition of woody encroachment based on species‐ and community‐level characteristics; such a definition is needed to evaluate accurately the effects of encroachment. We show that encroachment is a natural process of succession rather than a sign of degradation, with encroachment resulting in an overall 8% increase in ecosystem multifunctionality. Removing woody plants can increase herbaceous plant richness, biomass and cover, but at the expense of biocrust cover. The effectiveness of woody plant removal depends on plant identity, and where, when and how they are removed. Under current management practices, either removal or retention of woody plants can induce trade‐offs among ecosystem services, with no management practice maximising all SDGs [e.g. SDG2 (end hunger), SDG13 (climate change), SDG 15 (combat desertification)]. Given that encroachment of woody plants is likely to increase under future predicted hotter and drier climates, alternative management options such as carbon farming and ecotourism could be effective land uses for areas affected by encroachment. Abstract

Traditional recommendation systems, which rely on static user profiles and historical interaction data, frequently face difficulties in adapting to the rapid changes in user preferences that are typical of dynamic environments. In contrast, recommendation algorithms based on deep reinforcement learning are capable of dynamically adjusting their strategies to accommodate real-time fluctuations in user preferences. However, current deep reinforcement learning recommendation algorithms encounter several challenges, including the oversight of item features associated with high long-term rewards that reflect users' enduring interests, as well as a lack of significant relevance between user attributes and item characteristics. This leads to an inadequate extraction of personalized information. To address these issues, this study presents a novel recommendation system known as the Multi-Level Hierarchical Attention Mechanism Deep Reinforcement Recommendation (MHDRR), which is fundamentally grounded in a multi-layer attention mechanism. This mechanism consists of a local attention layer, a global attention layer, and a Transformer layer, allowing for a detailed analysis of individual attributes and interactions within short-term preferred items, while also exploring users' long-term interests. This methodology promotes a comprehensive understanding of users' immediate and enduring preferences, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of the system over time. 41. Impact of functional groups on aboveground biomass in alpine grassland communities.

Abstract

Alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are highly vulnerable to various treatments and face significant degradation risks due to global environmental changes. However, the response of these grasslands to different external treatments remains uncertain, and the patterns behind functional group responses are unclear, impeding our ability to restore alpine grasslands under changing climate. To address this gap, we compiled a comprehensive database of 797 experimental observations of alpine grasslands in the TP, classified these communities into four common functional groups (e.g., grass and sedge), and conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the response of aboveground biomass (AGB) to nine different treatments (e.g., grazing and nitrogen addition). Meta-regression was used to analyze the changes in AGB with treatment intensity and duration. We also used functional group asynchrony and unevenness to describe the complementary effects (CEs) and selection effects (SEs) of communities under these treatments. We found that among all the nine treatments, grazing had the biggest negative impact on the alpine grassland community by reducing AGB by 40.3%, mainly through decreasing the biomass of grass and sedge. Conversely, nitrogen and phosphorus addition had the largest positive effect, increasing AGB by 39.4% mainly by promoting the growth of grass. However, the increase in AGB was not significant in the interactive experiments involving grazing and nitrogen addition. The unevenness of the community decreased as grazing time prolongs, simplifying the structure of the community, with severe nutrient losses and weakened CE, while nitrogen addition could rapidly increase the AGB of grass and enhance the SE. CE or SE of communities can be enhanced through the restoration of specific functional groups, favoring the recovery of vegetation.
