TianQin is a geocentric space-based gravitational-wave observatory mission consisting of three drag-free controlled satellites in an equilateral triangle with an orbital radius of $ 10^{5}$ km. The constellation faces the white-dwarf binary RX J0806.3+1527 located slightly below the ecliptic plane, and is subject to gravitational perturbations that can distort the formation. In this study, we present combined methods to optimize the TianQin orbits so that a set of 5-year stability requirements can be met. Moreover, we discuss slow long-term drift of the detector pointing due to orbital precession, and put forward stable orbits with six other pointings along the lunar orbital plane. Some implications of the findings are pointed out.

In future geocentric space-based gravitational-wave observatory missions, eclipses due to passing through the Moon's and Earth's shadows can negatively impact the sciencecraft's thermal stability and steady power supply. The occurrence should be reduced as much as possible in orbit design. In regard to TianQin's circular high orbits, we tackle the combined challenges of avoiding eclipses and stabilizing the nearly equilateral-triangle constellation. Two strategies are proposed, including initial phase selection and orbit resizing to 1:8 synodic resonance with the Moon, where the latter involves slightly raising TianQin's preliminary orbital radius of $1\times 10^5$ km to $\sim 100900$ km. As the result, we have identified pure-gravity target orbits with a permitted initial phase range of $\sim 15^\circ$, which can maintain eclipse-free during the 3+3 month observation windows throughout a 5-year mission started in 2034, and meanwhile fulfil the constellation stability requirements. Materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE), which contract upon heating, are of great interest both technically and fundamentally. Here, we report giant NTE covering room temperature in mechanically milled antiperovksite GaNxMn3 compounds. The micrograin GaNxMn3 exhibits a large volume contraction at the antiferromagnetic (AFM) to paramagnetic (PM) (AFM-PM) transition within a temperature window ({\Delta}T) of only a few kelvins. The grain size reduces to ~ 30 nm after slight milling, while {\Delta}T is broadened to 50K. The corresponding coefficient of linear thermal expansion ({\alpha}) reaches ~ -70 ppm/K, which is almost two times larger than those obtained in chemically doped antiperovskite compounds. Further reducing grain size to ~ 10 nm, {\Delta}T exceeds 100 K and {\alpha} remains as large as -30 ppm/K (-21 ppm/K) for x = 1.0 (x = 0.9). Excess atomic displacements together with the reduced structural coherence, revealed by high-energy X-ray pair distribution functions, are suggested to delay the AFM-PM transition. By controlling the grain size via mechanically alloying or grinding, giant NTE may also be achievable in other materials with large lattice contraction due to electronic or magnetic phase transitions., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures

The present work reports on a feasibility study commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences of China to explore various possible mission options to detect gravitational waves in space alternative to that of the eLISA/LISA mission concept. Based on the relative merits assigned to science and technological viability, a few representative mission options descoped from the ALIA mission are considered. A semi-analytic Monte Carlo simulation is carried out to understand the cosmic black hole merger histories starting from intermediate mass black holes at high redshift as well as the possible scientific merits of the mission options considered in probing the light seed black holes and their coevolution with galaxies in early Universe. The study indicates that, by choosing the armlength of the interferometer to be three million kilometers and shifting the sensitivity floor to around one-hundredth Hz, together with a very moderate improvement on the position noise budget, there are certain mission options capable of exploring light seed, intermediate mass black hole binaries at high redshift that are not readily accessible to eLISA/LISA, and yet the technological requirements seem to within reach in the next few decades for China.
