The article discusses the issue of suburban townhouse developments in view of findings about housing design and crime in California. According to architect Oscar Newman, the basic components that comprise "defensible space" design to minimize the opportunity for crime are surveillance and territoriality. Moreover, Newman's principles of defensible space design apply under conditions where public open space is an important part of housing environments.
