The present study sought to evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-adherent potential of Eucalyptus radiata essential oil against food-borne strains of Escherichia coli. The study was performed using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). In addition, the disk diffusion technique was used to evaluate the association of Eucalyptus radiata essential oil with synthetic antimicrobials. The Minimum Inhibitory Adherence Concentration (MIC) was also performed. The results revealed that E. radiata showed antimicrobial activity against the E. coli strains tested, with MIC values ranging from 500 μg/mL to 1000 μg/mL and MBC values ranging from 500 μg/mL to 1,024 μg/mL. As for the associations, it was observed that E. radiata oil exhibited a synergistic effect for some antibiotics, especially Ceftriaxone, with greater interference from the essential oil. Furthermore, it was effective in inhibiting the adherence of bacterial strains of E. coli, showing a more significant antibiofilm effect than the antibacterial agent 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate. In summary, the essential oil of E. radiata showed antimicrobial potential against strains of E. coli of food origin, and can therefore, through in-depth studies, be used alone or in association with synthetic antimicrobials to combat infections caused by this pathogen.

Meat products represent an important component of the human diet and are a good source of nutrients. Food-borne microorganisms are the main pathogens that cause human diseases as a result of food consumption, especially products of animal origin. The objective of the present research was to verify the antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Thymus vulgaris against strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolated from meat products. For this, the analyses of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were performed in microdilution plates. The association of the product with antimicrobials was also studied using disk diffusion. And the anti-adherent activity, which was determined in the presence of sucrose, in glass tubes. Thyme oil showed a strong inhibitory activity against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, with the MIC values ranging from 64 to 512 μg/mL, and bactericidal effect for most strains, with MBC values ranging from 256 to 1,024 μg/mL. T. vulgaris oil exhibited varied interactions in association with the antimicrobials, with synergistic (41.67%), indifferent (50%) and antagonistic (8.33%) effects. Regarding the anti-adherent activity, the test product was effective in inhibiting the adherence of all bacterial strains under study. Therefore, thyme oil presents itself as an antibacterial and anti-adherent agent against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. saprophyticus, being a natural product that can represent an interesting alternative in the efforts to combat foodborne diseases.

Background: Most studies that seek to analyze the prevalence of allergic rhinitis do not include preschool children and the diagnosis in this age group is difficult., Objective: Identify complementary tests to the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis in preschool children and verify if there is scientific robustness to propose a diagnostic algorithm for this condition in this age group., Methods: Systematic review of the literature in four databases: SCIELO, PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS and SCOPUS. Each article was initially chosen by title, abstract and by the keywords "allergic rhinitis," "diagnosis" and "preschool." Those articles selected entered the complete reading and data extraction phase. The study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews under number CRD42020207053., Results: Fourteen articles were suitable for analysis. In the assessment using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies - 2, all studies had at least one domain considered "high risk" or "undetermined risk." Seven reports of nasal cytology, seven of specific IgE, four of immediate hypersensitivity skin test, one of nasal nitric oxide, three of total IgE and one of urinary leukotriene E4 were found. Eight articles evaluated more than one diagnostic test., Conclusion: There are no defined criteria for the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis in preschool children. Nasal cytology, serum specific IgE and immediate hypersensitivity skin test were the most used tests. A reliable diagnostic criterion in this age group is necessary so that in the future it is possible to propose a diagnostic algorithm for allergic rhinitis in preschool children.

Bacteria may be the initial cause of certain pathologies as well as a secondary agent responsible for the development of complications such as pressure ulcer infections. Pressure ulcers are a persistent health problem, especially in immunocompromised patients, and associated with infection by opportunistic microorganisms with antimicrobial resistance, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, highlight the need for the development of new antimicrobial approaches. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-adherent activity of Origanum vulgare L. (oregano) essential oil against Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, as well as the effect of its association with synthetic antimicrobials. To this end, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) analyses were performed on microdilution plates. The assay of the Minimum Inhibitory Adherence Concentration (MIAC), with test tubes. As well as, the association study through the infusion disc method containing ampicillin (AMP), gentamicin (GEN), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ceftriaxone (CEF). Therefore, it was possible to obtain that the essential oil of oregano presents antimicrobial and bactericidal activity, with MIC ranging between 128μg/mL and 256 μg/mL and MBC between 256 μg/mL and 512 μg/mL, on the tested K. pneumoniae strains. When used in association with ampicillin and gentamicin, oregano essential oil showed synergistic effect for some strains. Therefore, it is observed that the tested essential oil can act as a promising antibacterial in the treatment of diseases caused by K. pneumoniae.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy of needle revision using mitomycin C (MMC) for reviving failed filtering blebs during the late postoperative period and its safety for the corneal endothelium., Design: Prospective interventional case series., Participants: We recruited 125 eyes from 98 patients with uncontrolled glaucoma. All had at least 1 failed trabeculectomy, a flat filtering bleb, and a patent internal ostium on gonioscopy. The average time between the last trabeculectomy and needle revision was 5.3±5.3 years (range, 6 months to 30 years)., Intervention: Needling revision with a subconjunctival injection of 8 μg of MMC., Main Outcome Measures: Intraocular pressure (IOP) and number of hypotensive medications at latest visit, central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation of cell size (CV), and hexagonality before and after needling., Results: We performed 186 needling procedures on 125 eyes (mean, 1.5±0.6 procedures/eye). Seventy-three eyes (58.4%) were needled once, 44 eyes (35.2%) were needled twice, 7 eyes (5.6%) were needled 3 times, and 1 eye (0.8%) was needled 4 times. We reestablished aqueous flow and obtained a raised bleb in 115 eyes (92%). After an average follow-up of 20.8±12.0 months, the mean IOP decreased from 20.1±5.2 mmHg preoperatively to 13.2±6.8 mmHg (P<0.001), and the mean number of hypotensive medications per eye decreased from 2.4±1.1 to 0.8±1.3 (P<0.001) at the latest visit. The overall success rate (IOP ≤16 mmHg) was 76% (58.4% without medication and 17.6% with hypotensive medications). Kaplan-Meier survival rates were 91.2% at the 1-month follow-up, 84.5% at 6 months, 81.0% at 1 year, 74.6% at 2 years, and 66.3% at 3 years. We studied the corneal endothelium in 42 eyes of 36 patients. There was no statistically significant difference between preoperative CCT, ECD, CV, or hexagonality and postoperative measurements at 1 week and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months., Conclusions: Needling revision with adjunctive MMC is effective for reviving flat filtering blebs and controlling IOP, even several years after the original trabeculectomy, and seems to be safe for the corneal endothelium., (Copyright © 2011 American Academy of Ophthalmology. Objective: To investigate variation in the pre-surgical treatment planning after using conventional spiral tomography in addition to conventional radiographic exams., Material and Methods: Twenty-nine partial or fully edentulous patients referred to implant therapy were selected and submitted to periapical, panoramic and conventional cross-sectional tomography exams. Pre-surgical treatment planning of 120 potential implant sites in 69 edentulous areas was performed by two independent experienced dental implant surgeons. After clinical examination, pre-surgical planning was made using only periapical and panoramic exams. Examiners were requested to reformulated initial planning after assessing tomographic images. Four treatment parameters were evaluated: length and width of implants, need of bone grafting and need of other surgical procedures., Results: Implant length and width remained unchanged in 60.2% and 87.2% of cases, respectively. No difference in length (P=0.576) and width (P=1) scores was observed in treatment planning with and without tomography. Variation in implant dimension was not affected by location of edentulous areas. Bone grafting and other surgical procedures significantly changed after tomograms (P<0.001), independent of the location of edentulous areas. In 15.8% and 5.3% of cases bone grafting and other procedures were planned only after tomograms, respectively. Significant differences were observed in all maxillary and mandibular regions., Conclusion: Conventional spiral tomography plays an important role in pre-surgical treatment planning, increasing clinician's certainty of the need of additional surgical procedures (bone grafting, sinus lifting, and others) in pre-surgical treatment stage.

Low-grade central osteosarcoma is a rare type of osteosarcoma with peculiar clinical radiographic and microscopic features. The aim of this article is to report and discuss a case of low-grade central osteosarcoma in the mandible of a 42-year-old woman. The patient reported sensing mild pain and tooth mobility for a period of 4 years, despite continuous dental treatment. Radiographic evaluation showed a mixed radiopaque/radiolucenct lesion in the body, ramus, coronoid process, and condyle of the left side of the mandible. Destruction of the mandibular cortex in the area was also observed. After incisional biopsy, the patient underwent hemimandibulectomy. Microscopic findings showed a tumor exhibiting spindle cells with nuclear hyperchromasia and no mitotic activity, irregular osteoid formation, and soft tissue infiltration. The immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of Ki-67, Cyclin B1, and PCNA proteins (cellular proliferation markers) revealed a very low Ki-67+ and Cyclin B1+ cell index (mean 7% and 3%, respectively), but a moderate number of PCNA+ cells (mean 49%). The 2 years of clinical and imaging postoperative follow-up showed no evidence of recurrence. Clinicians should be aware of these lesions, because histopathologicially low-grade central osteosarcoma may be misinterpreted as fibrous dysplasia.
