Background: Internet has become an indispensable source of health‐related information. However, several studies have shown there to be a lack of quality control for webpages related to disability. Specifically, available content concerning Down syndrome (DS) and dentistry is limited and of dubious quality. Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the quality of online content in Spanish and Portuguese on dental care for individuals with DS. Methods: A simultaneous search in Google and Bing using the terms "Down syndrome" and "odontology/dentist/dental treatment" in Spanish and Portuguese was conducted in seven Ibero‐American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and Portugal). The first 100 consecutive pages of results from the three combinations of terms in each of the search engines were accessed and selected by applying conventional exclusion criteria. The selected pages were classified according to their authorship, specificity and dissemination potential. The quality of the online content was assessed using the DISCERN questionnaire and the Questionnaire to Evaluate Health Web Sites According to European Criteria (QEEC). The presence of the Health On Net (HON) and Accredited Medical Website (AMW) seals was also assessed. Results: The mean DISCERN score was 2.51 ± 0.85 and 2.57 ± 0.86 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. The mean readability score was 3.43 ± 1.26 and 3.25 ± 1.08 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. None of the selected webpages presented the HONcode or AMW trust seals. Conclusions: The content available online in Spanish and Portuguese regarding Down syndrome and dentistry is scarce and of highly questionable quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of free‐to‐access videos on oral biopsy procedures on the YouTube platform. Materials and Methods: We conducted a search on YouTube using the term "oral biopsy" and selected the first 100 videos in order of relevance. The following exclusion criteria were applied: language other than English, videos that did not cover oral biopsy techniques, videos on nonhuman specimens, postoperative instructions, personal experiences, exfoliative cytology, or "brush biopsy." Forty‐seven selected videos were classified based on their duration, country of origin, date of upload to the system, author, information source and number of views, and likes and dislikes. Video quality was analyzed using DISCERN, the Global Quality Scale (GQS), and the Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI). Results: The majority (78.7%) of analyzed videos were uploaded by dentists, originating from India (48.9%), with a mean duration of 11.8 min (SD, 20.4), with 104.5 likes (SD, 186.4) and 7.1 dislikes (SD, 10.55). The mean values for DISCERN, GQS, and VIQI were 1.3 (SD, 0.52), 2.1 (SD, 1.04), and 9.62 (SD, 1.69), respectively. Piezoelectric osteotomy is based on ultrasonic vibration of an osteotomic device that permits precise cutting of bone structures without cutting adjacent soft tissues. To date, however, there have been no studies of the outcome and complications of alveolar distraction for piezoelectric osteotomy versus conventional osteotomy. The present study evaluated piezoelectric versus conventional osteotomy in alveolar distraction. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was performed on all patients of the auothors who requested dental implants and who after preliminary evaluation were judged to require alveolar distraction osteogenesis for rehabilitation of edentulous mandibular regions. The distraction was performed using the same distraction system in all cases, but with the osteotomy performed either by conventional techniques using rotary instruments and chisels (conventional osteotomy group, n = 11), or by piezoelectric osteotomy using the Piezosurgery system (Mectron Medical Technology; Carasco, Genoa, Italy; n = 6). The 17 distractions were compared with respect to patient age, patient sex, intra- and postoperative complications, degree of surgical difficulty, postdistraction morphology of the alveolar ridge, and rehabilitation success rate. Results: Both surgical difficulty (as measured by the number of surgical instruments required) and the incidence of intraoperative complications were significantly lower in the piezoelectric osteotomy group than in the conventional osteotomy group. However, postdistraction morphology of the alveolar ridge (as determined at implant placement) was worse in the piezoelectric osteotomy group than in the conventional osteotomy group (P = .072). The overall rehabilitation success rate was 100% in the conventional osteotomy group versus only 66.7% (4 of 6 cases) in the piezoelectric osteotomy group. Conclusions: The use of piezoelectric osteotomy in alveolar distraction appears to simplify surgery and reduce the incidence of intraoperative complications. However, results also suggest that piezoelectric osteotomy increases the risk of postoperative and postdistraction complications and reduces the overall rehabilitation success rate. Actinic cheilitis is an oral potentially malignant disorder caused by UV radiation leading to damage to epithelial keratinocytes of the lips. It predominantly affects the vermillion border of the lower lip. Due to its association with chronic UV exposure, associated risk factors include geographic areas, outdoor occupations, and skin subtypes. A high proportion of lip squamous cell carcinomas arise from actinic cheilitis lesions, with histological examination usually showing a degree of dysplasia. This paper aims to review the existing literature regarding the clinical picture of actinic cheilitis, its prevalence, differential diagnoses, and consensus on management, for the education of the general dental practitioner in identifying and surveillance of this lesion.

We report the case of a 77-year-old male with a history of aortic stenosis and interstitial lung disease, who debuted 3 years ago with an outbreak of necrotic and very painful canker sores. The severity of the lesions and their refractory response to treatment led to several hospital admissions and multiple consultations to different specialists (ENT, rheumatology, dermatology, ophthalmology, cardiology, and internal medicine). During this time, the patient received central parenteral nutrition with an episode of catheter-related septicemia, and he came to require psychiatric assistance for autolytic ideation. Numerous diagnostic tests were performed with inconclusive results, including biopsy of the lesion (histological study, immunohistochemistry for CD68 + , CD4 + , CD8 + , CD20 + , MCT +, and cytomegalovirus, PAS, Grocott-Gomori and Zielh-Neelsen staining, and in situ hybridization for Epstein Barr virus). Numerous treatments were unsuccessfully tested until thalidomide was administered, thus completely remitting lesions but leaving retractable scarring sequelae. Since then, the patient has had two recurrences, coinciding with the reduction of thalidomide dosages, which were controlled by increasing the dose of the immunomodulator. Recurrent necrotizing major aphthous stomatitis (Sutton's disease) is a clinical variant of recurrent aphthous stomatitis that may have a dramatic course. Unfortunately, the lack of etiopathogenetic uniformity precludes any specific treatment. In severe cases, immunomodulators, including thalidomide, may represent a valid therapeutic option. Introduction: The diagnosis of and risks associated with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) have been widely reported, but little has been published on the management of OPMDs in a primary dental care setting. Hospital services face ongoing pressures due to long-term follow-up, with a need for surveillance to be jointly undertaken with primary dental care clinicians. In a primary care setting, identification and surveillance of OPMDs can be challenging as no universal guidance exists on recommended recall intervals. Corpus: In this article, an update on OPMDs is provided and, based on the practices of six Oral Medicine units in Europe (London (United Kingdom), Milan (Italy), Bordeaux (France), Porto (Portugal), Zagreb (Croatia) and Santiago de Compostela (Spain)), aiming to provide guidance on monitoring in a primary care setting in Europe. Conclusion: Oral medicine clinicians can provide guidance to general dental practitioners (GDPs) on recommended recall intervals. It is important that they feel confident in monitoring these conditions and, when concerned, to arrange referral to a hospital or appropriate specialist. GDPs should document descriptions of lesions and, if possible, take clinical photographs. Patients should be counselled on modifiable lifestyle factors and directed to oral medicine society websites to access patient information leaflets.

Objectives: To describe the historical evolution and dissemination of the Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology international societies and associations across the globe, and to provide insights into their significant contributions toward oral health promotion., Study Design: This review was conducted in accordance with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology Group guidance. The reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR)., Results: Search strategy was applied to 5 databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS)) and grey literature (Google Scholar, Open Grey and ProQuest), as well as additional sources, such as organization websites. Eighty-nine sources were included in this review. Forty-six professional associations/societies were identified, of which 39 represented a country or geopolitical region, 2 represented continents, 2 represented multinational organizations and 3 multinational study groups., Conclusions: Documentation of the historical establishment and development of Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology organizations worldwide is limited and describing these processes remains challenging. Analysis of global data reveals heterogeneous development and distribution, resulting in disparities in accessibility and standardization. As a relatively new tool, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine and dentistry has the potential to significantly transform the healthcare sector. AI has already demonstrated efficacy in medical diagnosis across several specialties, used successfully to detect breast, lung and skin cancer. In Oral Medicine, AI may be applied in a similar fashion, used in the detection and diagnosis of oral cancers and oral potentially malignant diseases. Despite its promise as a transformative diagnostic aid, the use of AI in healthcare presents significant safety, reliability and ethical concerns. There is no formal consensus on the safe and ethical implementation of AI systems in healthcare settings, but the literature converges on several key principles of ethical AI use including transparency, justice and fairness, non-maleficence, responsibility and privacy. This article provides a narrative review of the key ethical issues surrounding AI use in medicine, and reflects on these, providing view-points of a bioethicist and Oral Medicine clinicians from several units., (© 2024 The Author(s). Aims: This study's main objective was to analyze the discrepancy between the dental medication record (DMR) and the physician-prescribed active medications recorded in the medical medication record (MMR)., Methods: The study group consisted of 100 adults who attended the University Dental Clinic (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) requesting dental care. A dental history was created for all participants that included the DMR. The MMR were compiled from their electronic medical records., Results: About 80% of the patients consumed at least one drug (94.2% of those >65 years) and 19% took more than five drugs (26.4% of those > 65 years). In total, 54% of the patients had some discrepancy between the medications recorded in the DMR and those in the MMR (48.4% for those ≤65 years and 64.7% for those >65 years). The rate of participants who omitted some drugs was higher for those >65 years. The drugs most omitted from the DMR were analgesics/opioids, antihypertensives and anxiolytics/hypnotics/sedatives., Conclusions: It is imperative to access the MMR of patients requesting dental care because a significant number of medications are not reflected in their DMR. Background: In 1973, Saunders T. Frank described the diagonal earlobe crease (DELC) as a potential marker of cardiovascular disease. However, this anatomical finding is not routinely examined. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of this crease in the general population attending a dental setting and describe its anatomical variations to be able to categorize it as a physical sign., Methodology: A study group of 1050 white adults were selected, as participants in the framework of the "A Estrada Study of Glycation and Inflammation" (AEGIS), a cross-sectional, population-based descriptive study of a representative sample of the general adult population of the municipality of A Estrada (Pontevedra, Spain). Each participant's age, sex, and preferred head position when sleeping were recorded. Both earlobes were visually inspected and the anatomical variables of the crease were recorded (unilateral or bilateral, length, depth, and presence of secondary creases). The relationship between the study variables was analyzed using the chi-squared test, Student's t-test, the analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the nonparametric tests of Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis., Results: The DELC was observed in 65.2% of the participants. In 71.5% of the cases, the sign was complete (occupying the space from the tragus to the posterior edge of the earlobe); in 56.9% of the cases, the sign was bilateral; in 45.1% of the cases it was deep; and in the 43.6% of the cases, accessory creases were identified. Neither sex nor the habitual head position when sleeping were related to the prevalence or characteristics of the DELC. The prevalence, extent and depth of Frank's sign increased significantly with age (p < .001)., Conclusion: The prevalence of the DELC increases significantly with age, and its morphological characteristics are accentuated. Diuron and Irgarol are common antifouling biocides used in paints to prevent the attachment and growth of fouling organisms on ship hulls and other submerged structures. Concerns about their toxicity to non-target aquatic organisms have led to various restrictions on their use in antifouling paints worldwide. Previous studies have shown the widespread presence of these substances in port areas along the Brazilian coast, with a concentration primarily in the southern part of the country. In this study, we conducted six sampling campaigns over the course of 1 year to assess the presence and associated risks of Diuron and Irgarol in water collected from areas under the influence of the Maranhão Port Complex in the Brazilian Northeast. Our results revealed the absence of Irgarol in the study area, irrespective of the sampling season and site. In contrast, the mean concentrations of Diuron varied between 2.0 ng L -1 and 34.1 ng L -1 and were detected at least once at each sampling site. We conducted a risk assessment of Diuron levels in this area using the risk quotient (RQ) method. Our findings indicated that Diuron levels at all sampling sites during at least one campaign yielded an RQ greater than 1, with a maximum of 22.7, classifying the risk as "high" based on the proposed risk classification. Delivering bad news has been widely studied in cancer, thus, this scoping review aims to identify the available evidence concerning the communication of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and their clinical and psychosocial impacts. A search was performed using electronic databases (Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science) and one grey literature database (Google Scholar). Studies focused on communicating the diagnosis of OPMDs and the patients' perceptions were included. Study selection and data extraction were performed by two authors in a two-phase process. Five publications were included in the qualitative analysis. Differences regarding the study design, population, OPMDs assessed, and outcomes of professional-patient communication were found in each study. Protocols for OPMD communication have not yet been reported and there is a need to standardize strategies as communication skills may provide better clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with potentially malignant disorders. Although future studies are needed, a brief list recommending the aspects that must be communicated is proposed.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral amoxicillin/clavulanate (AMX-CL) for the prevention of bacteremia following dental extractions. The study group (AMX-CLG) comprised 40 adults requiring dental extractions under general anesthesia who were administered a prophylactic regimen of 1875/125 mg of AMX-CL orally 1-2 h prior to the surgery. Venous blood samples were collected from each patient at baseline and at 30 s and 15 min after dental extractions. Samples were inoculated into BACTEC Plus culture bottles and processed in the BACTEC 9240. Conventional microbiological techniques were used for subcultures and further identification of the isolated bacteria. The results for the AMX-CLG were compared with those of a control group (CG; no prophylaxis) and an amoxicillin group (AMXG; 2 g of amoxicillin orally), consisting of randomly selected patients from among those participating in two clinical trials that we have previously published. The prevalence of bacteremia in the CG, AMXG, and AMX-CLG was 97%, 50%, and 15%, respectively, at 30 s after completing the extractions, and 67%, 10%, and 4% at 15 min, respectively, after the last extraction. The prevalence of bacteremia in the AMXG and the AMX-CLG at 30 s and at 15 min after completing the extractions was significantly lower than that in the CG (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively; Fisher's exact test). The prevalence of bacteremia in the AMX-CLG at 30 s after completing the extractions was significantly lower than that in the AMXG (p < 0.001; Fisher's exact test). Based in the results of this preliminary study, oral AMX-CL could be an excellent option for preventing bacteremia secondary to dental procedures in patients at risk., (© 2022 The Authors. Objective: There is a lack of consensus regarding clinician- and patient-reported oral lichen planus (OLP) outcomes. The World Workshop on Oral Medicine Outcomes Initiative for the Direction of Research (WONDER) Project aims to develop a core outcome set (COS) for OLP, which would inform the design of clinical trials and, importantly, facilitate meta-analysis, leading to the establishment of more robust evidence for the management of this condition and hence improved patient care., Study Design: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and Clinicaltrials.gov were searched for interventional studies (randomized controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, and case series including ≥5 participants) on OLP and oral lichenoid reactions published between January 2001 and March 2022 without language restriction. All reported primary and secondary outcomes were extracted., Results: The searches yielded 9,135 records, and 291 studies were included after applying the inclusion criteria. A total of 422 outcomes were identified. These were then grouped based on semantic similarity, condensing the list to 69 outcomes. The most frequently measured outcomes were pain (51.9%), clinical grading of the lesions (29.6%), lesion size/extension/area (27.5%), and adverse events (17.5%)., Conclusion: As a first step in developing a COS for OLP, we summarized the outcomes that have been used in interventional studies over the past 2 decades, which are numerous and heterogeneous., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors.
