Abstract Purpose Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) have been the cornerstone of COVID-19 pandemic control, but evidence on their effectiveness varies according to the methods and approaches taken to empirical analysis. We analysed the impact of NPIs on incident SARS-CoV-2 across 32 European countries (March-December 2020) using two NPI trackers: the Corona Virus Pandemic Policy Monitor – COV-PPM, and the Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker – OxCGRT. Methods NPIs were summarized through principal component analysis into three sets, stratified by two waves (C1-C3, weeks 5–25, and C4-C6, weeks 35–52). Longitudinal, multi-level mixed-effects negative binomial regression models were fitted to estimate incidence rate ratios for cases and deaths considering different time-lags and reverse causation (i.e. changing incidence causing NPIs), stratified by waves and geographical regions (Western, Eastern, Northern, Southern, Others). Results During the first wave, restrictions on movement/mobility, public transport, public events, and public spaces (C1) and healthcare system improvements, border closures and restrictions to public institutions (C2) were associated with a reduction in SARS-CoV-2 incidence after 28 and 35-days. Mask policies (C3) were associated with a reduction in SARS-CoV-2 incidence (except after 35-days). During wave 1, C1 and C2 were associated with a decrease in deaths after 49-days and C3 after 21, 28 and 35-days. During wave 2, restrictions on movement/mobility, public transport and healthcare system improvements (C5) were also associated with a decrease in SARS-CoV-2 cases and deaths across all countries. Conclusion In the absence of pre-existing immunity, vaccines or treatment options, our results suggest that the observed implementation of different categories of NPIs, showed varied associations with SARS-CoV-2 incidence and deaths across regions, and varied associations across waves. These relationships were consistent across components of NPIs derived from two policy trackers (CoV-PPM and OxCGRT).

Abstract Background Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is the most common form of interpersonal violence and a major public health problem. The COVID-19 pandemic might have contributed to an increase in IPV experiences. To evaluate changes in IPV prevalence during the pandemic, it is important to consider studies’ methodological characteristics such as the assessment tools used, samples addressed, or administration modes (e.g., face-to-face, telephone or online interviews), since they may influence disclosure and were likely affected by pandemic-imposed mobility restrictions. Methods Systematic review and meta-analysis of empirical studies addressing IPV against women, men, or both, during the COVID-19 period. We searched six electronic databases until December 2021, including articles in English, German, Spanish, French or Portuguese languages. We extracted and synthesised characteristics of studies related to sampling (clinical, community, convenience), type assessment tool (standardised questionnaire, specifically created questions), method of administration (online, telephone, face-to-face), and estimates of different forms of IPV (physical, sexual, psychological). IPV estimates were pooled stratified by study characteristics using random-effects models. Results Of 3581 publications, we included 103 studies. Fifty-five studies used a standardized instrument (or some adaptations) to assess IPV, with the World Health Organisation Questionnaire and the Revised Conflicts Tactics Scales being the most frequent. For 34 studies, the authors created specific questions to assess IPV. Sixty-one studies were conducted online, 16 contacted participants face-to-face and 11 by telephone. The pooled prevalence estimate for any type of violence against women (VAW) was 21% (95% Confidence Interval, 95%CI = 18%-23%). The pooled estimate observed for studies assessing VAW using the telephone was 19% (95%CI = 10%-28%). For online studies it was 16% (95%CI = 13%-19%), and for face-to-face studies, it was 38% (95%CI = 28%-49%). According to the type of sample, a pooled estimate of 17% (95%CI = 9%-25%) was observed for studies on VAW using a clinical sample. This value was 21% (95%CI = 18%-24%) and 22% (95%CI = 16%-28%) for studies assessing VAW using a convenience sample and a general population or community sample, respectively. According to the type of instrument, studies on VAW using a standardized tool revealed a pooled estimate of 21% (95%CI = 18%-25%), and an estimate of 17% (95%CI = 13%-21%) was found for studies using specifically created questions. Conclusions During the pandemic, IPV prevalence studies showed great methodological variation. Most studies were conducted online, reflecting adaptation to pandemic measures implemented worldwide. Prevalence estimates were higher in face-to-face studies and in studies using a standardized tool. However, estimates of the different forms of IPV during the pandemic do not suggest a marked change in prevalence compared to pre-pandemic global prevalence estimates, suggesting that one in five women experienced IPV during this period.

This study is a meta-analysis of recent global research articles on hydrogeochemical modelling of permafrost regions to determine trends and consensus on research gaps and future research directions. The hydrogeochemical response of permafrost to climate change remains challenging to estimate and forecast despite evidence of large-scale impacts on freshwater and ecological cycles. We investigate the feasibility, need, and potential for hydrogeochemical modelling of permafrost landscapes by reviewing recommendations from previous modelling, review, and primer papers, including discussing ways to advance this type of modelling science. Key permafrost hydrogeochemical processes are discussed, including heat transfer and associated freeze–thaw regimes, biogeochemical processes and rates, and surface and subsurface flow. Modelling considerations (i.e., model dimension, scale, heterogeneity, and permafrost zonation) and model parameters are subsequently examined. Finally, limitations and additional considerations for advancing permafrost hydrogeochemical modelling efforts are reviewed. The findings of this review are summarized in recommendations, tables, and two schematics incorporating key considerations for future hydrogeochemical modelling initiatives in permafrost environments.

ObjectivesViolence against women is a widespread public health concern with severe effects to women's sexual and reproductive health, including higher risks for miscarriage or stillbirth, unintended pregnancy and induced abortion. This study examined the association between women exposure to physical violence, psychological violence and sexual and reproductive health outcomes (contraceptive use, miscarriage or stillbirth and abortion) in Germany.MethodsThis study used a cross-sectional research design to analyze data on violence against women and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes collected through the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults, Wave 1, between 2008 and 2011 (n = 3149 women, aged 18-64 years). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between experiences of violence among women and the presence of sexual and reproductive health outcomes, considering the influence of socio-demographic and health-related factors (age, marital status, socioeconomic status, social support, number of children, alcohol consumption, health status, chronic conditions).ResultsThree associations remained significant (pConclusionsThe results suggest that adult German women who experienced physical or psychological violence since the age of 16, including violence perpetrated by a parent or caregiver, were more likely to report miscarriage or stillbirth and abortion. Direct assessment of violence experiences against women should be conducted by healthcare professionals in clinical encounters, particularly by obstetrics and gynaecological specialists, for the prevention of women´s adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Furthermore, violence should be treated as a major public health concern and addressed through a multisectoral approach, involving the healthcare and educational sectors, researchers and relevant policymakers.

This work reports on the surface functionalization of a nanomaterial supporting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) with (synthetic) thiolated oligonucleotide-based biorecognition elements, envisaging the development of selective LSPR-based DNA biosensors. The LSPR thin-film transducers are composed of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a TiO2 dielectric matrix, produced cost-effectively and sustainably by magnetron sputtering. The study focused on the immobilization kinetics of thiolated oligonucleotide probes as biorecognition elements, followed by the evaluation of hybridization events with the target probe. The interaction between the thiolated oligonucleotide probe and the transducer’s surface was assessed by monitoring the LSPR signal with successive additions of probe solution through a microfluidic device. The device was specifically designed and fabricated for this work and adapted to a high-resolution LSPR spectroscopy system with portable characteristics. Benefiting from the synergetic characteristics of Ag and Au in the form of bimetallic nanoparticles, the Au-Ag/TiO2 thin film proved to be more sensitive to thiolated oligonucleotide binding events. Despite the successful surface functionalization with the biorecognition element, the detection of complementary oligonucleotides revealed electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance, which hindered hybridization with the target oligonucleotide. This study points to an effect that is still poorly described in the literature and affects the design of LSPR biosensors based on nanoplasmonic thin films.

Amyloidosis is a group of protein misfolding diseases, which include spongiform encephalopathies, Alzheimer’s disease and transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis; all of them are characterized by extracellular deposits of an insoluble fibrillar protein. TTR amyloidosis is a highly debilitating and life-threatening disease. Patients carry less stable TTR homotetramers that are prone to dissociation into non-native monomers, which in turn rapidly self-assemble into oligomers and, ultimately, amyloid fibrils. Liver transplantation to induce the production of wild-type TTR was the only therapeutic strategy until recently. A promising approach to ameliorate transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis is based on the so-called TTR kinetic stabilizers. More than 1000 TTR stabilizers have already been tested by many research groups, but the diversity of experimental techniques and conditions used hampers an objective prioritization of the compounds. One of the most reliable and unambiguous techniques applied to determine the structures of the TTR/drug complexes is X-ray diffraction. Most of the potential inhibitors bind in the TTR channel and the crystal structures reveal the atomic details of the interaction between the protein and the compound. Here we suggest that the stabilization effect is associated with a compaction of the quaternary structure of the protein and propose a scoring function to rank drugs based on X-ray crystallography data.

A degradação dos solos representa um risco atual e futuro de comprometimento de serviços ecossistêmicos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar os atributos do solo de uma área degradada e fragmentos conservados de Cerrado no Triângulo Mineiro-MG. Para tanto, houve avaliação multitemporal de uma voçoroca por meio de fotogrametria em SIG; realizou-se trabalhos de campos com coletas em 39 pontos amostrais e descrição de 5 perfis de solo, em ambientes previamente estratificados da voçoroca; em laboratório, procedeu-se a determinação de atributos físicos, químicos e de matéria orgânica do solo e; análises estatísticas foram conduzidas. Ao longo do tempo, foi estimada uma evolução da degradação do solo de 62% na área, com avanço de 499,5 m²/ano no período de erosão mais acelerada (1964-1979) para 96,9 m²/ano (2005-2020). A ACP evidencia o ambiente de Mata como o de maior fertilidade, com vetores de matéria orgânica, soma de bases e macro e micronutrientes relacionados; testes estatísticos indicam variações entre as frações granulométricas de ambientes conservados e áreas degradadas e igualdade da matéria orgânica no Cerradão e Mata em detrimento da voçoroca. O manejo da matéria orgânica, visando sua incorporação e aumento no solo, deve ser privilegiado em projetos de restauração ambiental.

Abstract The aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify when the ascent of the conus medullaris occurs in human foetuses considering differences in evaluation methods and sample characteristics. Five databases were searched for relevant articles using different combinations of keywords. Article selection and data extraction were performed independently by two reviewers. Disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. The variables were distributed into four groups according to the gestational age of the specimens: I (13–18 weeks); II (19–25 weeks); III (26–32 weeks); IV (33 weeks to the probable date of birth). Eighteen articles were included. The majority used imaging exams as the evaluation method. Cadaveric dissections were reported in the remaining articles. Only morphological studies were included in the meta-analysis. Significant ascent occurs between groups I and III as well as groups II and IV. Despite the considerable heterogeneity among the studies included in the present review, the findings enabled the determination that the conus medullaris reaches its normal birth level by the 26th week. Further analyses should be performed based on nationality and ethnicity to diminish the heterogeneity of the data.

This work reports on the development of nanoplasmonic thin films consisting of Au, Ag, or Au-Ag nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 matrix and the optimization of the deposition parameters to tune their optical response. The thin films were produced by reactive DC magnetron sputtering of a Ti target with Au and/or Ag pellets placed on the erosion zone. The thicknesses (50 and 100 nm) of the films, the current density (75 and 100 A/m2) applied to the target (titanium), and the number of pellets placed on its surface were the deposition conditions that were used to tailor the optical (LSPR) response. The total noble metal content varied between 13 and 28 at.% for Au/TiO2 films, between 22 and 30 at.% for Ag/TiO2 films, and 8 to 29 at% for the Au-Ag/TiO2 systems with 1:1, 1:1.5, and 1:2 Au:Ag atomic ratios. After thermal annealing at 400 and 600 °C, LSPR bands were found for all films concerning the Au-TiO2 and Au-Ag/TiO2, while for Ag/TiO2, only for thin films with 28 and 30 at.% of Ag concentration. Refractive index sensitivity (RIS) was evaluated for Au and Au-Ag/TiO2 thin films. It was found that for bimetallic nanoparticles, the sensitivity can increase up to five times when compared to a monometallic nanoplasmonic system. Using Au-Ag/TiO2 thin films can decrease the cost of fabrication of LSPR transducers while improving their sensitivity.

Abstract Integration of blockchain systems into industrial applications show promise in increasing security, trust, and transparency along the value-chain during product and process tracking. However, current solutions suffer performance deficiencies, or often disregard legacy devices still in operation. We propose a blockchain system built upon an IoT architecture that is secure, modular, easily scalable, and deployable for fast certification of manufacturing data, compatible with current industrial landscapes. First, the proposed architecture is presented along with elements required to manage network functions. Second, easing integration with existing manufacturing solutions, custom APIs are created and subsequently explained. This grants the platform plug-and-play capabilities, requiring minimal hardware and software configuration for deployment. Lastly, a prototype is designed to validate the solution, concluding the viability of the proposed architecture as a fast and secure certification method of manufacturing data.

Abstract Background The mental health condition and healthcare needs of asylum seeking and refugee (ASR) children may go unrecognized if barriers to healthcare access exist accompanied by exclusive focus on somatic illness. We analysed the relationship between psychosocial functioning, health status and healthcare access of ASR children. Methods During 2018, 560 ASR adults in 58 collective accommodations in Germany’s 3rd largest federal state were randomly sampled and assessed. The parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess child psychosocial functioning. SDQ dimensions (Emotional, Conduct, Peer, Hyperactivity, Prosocial, Total) were compared by demographics (sex, age, region of origin, time since arrival, subjective social status), health status (long-lasting illness, physical limitation, pain) and healthcare access (utilization: paediatrician, specialist, dentist, psychologist, hospital/emergency department, prescribed medicines; and unmet needs: for paediatrician/specialist, reduced spending to cover healthcare cost). Age and sex-adjusted odds ratios (AOR, 95%CI-Confidence Intervals) for scoring in borderline/abnormal ranges in SDQ dimensions were estimated through logistic regression depending on children’ health status and healthcare access. Results We analysed parents’ answers pertaining to 90 children aged 1–17 years old, 57% of which were girls and 58% with (Eastern or Western) Asian nationality. Scoring in the borderline/abnormal range of the SDQ Total Difficulties score was associated with feeling bodily pain (compared to no pain, AOR, 95%CI = 3.14, 1.21–8.10) and with an unmet need for a specialist during the previous year (4.57, 1.09–19.16). Borderline/abnormal SDQ Emotional scores were positively associated with a long-lasting illness (5.25, 1.57–17.55), physical limitation (4.28, 1.49–12.27) and bodily pain (3.00, 1.10–8.22), and negatively associated with visiting a paediatrician (0.23, 0.07–0.78), specialist (0.16, 0.04–0.69), and the emergency department (0.27, 0.08–0.96). Conclusion Poor psychosocial functioning among ASR children is associated with somatic problems, unmet medical needs, and lower healthcare utilisation. Somatic clinical encounters with ASR should include children’ mental health symptomatology assessment, especially in those with worst physical health conditions.

ABSTRACT This study verified the impacts of climate change on river flow in the Doce River basin, using the MGB and RCM Eta projections. Despite the differences between the trends, the basin will certainly be affected by the reduction of precipitation and the increase in temperature between 2025 and 2099. Results show considerable reductions in the trends of the average flow of the basin. In 2025 - 2049, these reduction trends are greater than 64% in 50% of river reaches, according to Eta-HadGEM2-ES RCP 8.5. In 2050 - 2074, the flows simulated with Eta-CanESM2 and Eta-HadGEM2-ES RCP 8.5 achieve reductions greater than 84% and 77%, respectively, in 50% of the simulated reaches. In 2075 - 2099 the reduction trends of Eta-CanESM2 and Eta-HadGEM2-ES RCP 8.5 are greater than 91% and 79%, respectively, in 50% of the drainage reaches.

The identity and phylogenetic relationships of Laetiporaceae taxa (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) remain poorly studied. In this work we carry out a multigene phylogenetic analysis to identify the Laetiporus species that grow in South America and move forward the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among the poroid genera of Laetiporaceae within the antrodia clade. Based on the morphology and molecular phylogenetic data, two new genera are proposed, Berckurtia to accommodate Berkcurtia persicina comb. nov. and Atlantiporus to accommodate Atlantiporus squalidus comb. nov., and 2 other new combinations Kusaghiporia talpae and Laetiporus dilatohyphus. A key to the poroid genera of the Laetiporaceae is also provided and the taxonomic implications for these species and related taxa are discussed.

Great progress has been made in recent years on taxonomy of brown rot polypores based on phylogenetical evidence, mainly Daeadalea within Fomitopsidaceae. However, the relations within the Fomitopsidaceae family remain unresolved. Some neotropical species of Daedalea were never included in molecular phylogenetic analyses, such as D. aethalodes, D. ryvardeniana, and south American specimens of D. modesta. To clarify the relationships of those species within Daedalea we carried out molecular phylogenetic analyses based on five molecular markers (ITS, nLSU, nSSU, RPB2, and TEF-1). Daedalea s. s. was recovered as a strongly supported clade including most species, however, Daedalea radiata grouped with Rodofomitopsis. A new neotropical species, Daedalea rajchenbergiana sp. nov., was described based on molecular phylogeny, morphology, and distribution evidence. The placement of Daedalea aethalodes, D. ryvardeniana, and D. rajchenbergiana sp. nov. within Daedalea s. s. was confirmed.

Abstract Background Assessing subjective social status (SSS) may be easily accommodated in the context of a Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). To our knowledge, no prior studies have examined the association of SSS and health in Angola. Subjective socioeconomic measures may provide a rapid assessment of a relevant social status construct, important for studying health inequalities. In this study, we addressed social determinants of health by examining the relationship between the subjective and objective social status, reported health and healthcare-seeking behaviour. Methods This research results from a cross-sectional study performed during 2015 in the Dande HDSS, in Angola. We tested the application of the MacArthur scale as a measure of SSS in a developing setting, in a sample of 12,246 households. First, we investigated its relation to objective socioeconomic indicators, and then we explored how subjective and objective social status associate with health reported needs and health-seeking behaviour of the surveyed population. Chi-square, ANOVA tests, and Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) Curves analysis were computed for testing relationships between subjective status ladder quartiles, sociodemographic and household characteristics. Logistic regression was used to examine the influence of subjective perception of status in self-reported health and health-seeking behaviour. Results Our findings suggest that the SSS follows a gradient distribution obtained with more objective socioeconomic indicators. Additionally, we found that subjective perception of status influence health needs reporting and health-seeking behaviour and its significant effect remained after controlling for the objective socioeconomic markers. Individuals standing in the second quartile of the social ladder have more odds of reporting illness and those in the highest quartiles of the ladder were twice more likely (OR = 2.23, 95% CI = 1.52–3.26) to seek help from formal health services than those at the bottom of the ladder. Conclusions The MacArthur Scale is a valuable tool to measure SSS in the Dande HDSS, relevant for studying socioeconomic disparities and health inequalities. It is also an easier alternative to traditional measures such as income, usually difficult to measure in developing settings. The social perception of status should be considered as a complement with objective indicators when exploring social determinants of health.

Organizing pneumonia is a pulmonary disease of undefined etiology, with few reported cases in children. It may be secondary to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, infectious agents, or hematopoietic cell transplantation. We present a case of an 18-year-old boy who presented to a follow-up consult with respiratory symptoms at the age of 11 years, 8 years after finishing treatment for a prostatic relapse of a pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma. Chest radiography revealed nodular opacities in the left lung, the one in the left lower lobe with silhouette sign with the left hemidiaphragm. Chest computerized tomography showed 2 nodular lesions in the left upper lobe, one of them cavitated, and another nodular lesion in the left lower lobe; 2 of these nodules had surrounding ground-glass opacities. Microbiological work-up, including tuberculosis screening, was negative. Biopsy revealed findings suggestive of organizing pneumonia. He presented spontaneous resolution. This case presented a diagnostic challenge due to rarity of this condition and its indetermined association with the patient’s history of rhabdomyosarcoma. With this case, the authors alert that organizing pneumonia must be considered in patients presenting with pulmonary lesions with a history of previous hematopoietic stem cell transplants, lung irradiation, or immunosuppression. Pulmonary metastases and secondary tumors must be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with a heavily treated relapsed rhabdomyosarcoma.

Abstract Background: Anaphylaxis is a constant perioperative concern due to the exposure to several agents capable of inducing hypersensitivity reactions. Patent blue V (PBV), also known as Sulfan Blue, a synthetic dye used in sentinel node research in breast surgery, is responsible for 0.6% of reported anaphylactic conditions. We present a case of a 49-year-old female patient who underwent left breast tumorectomy with sentinel lymph node staging using PBV and experienced an anaphylactic reaction. Methods: We conducted a literature search through PubMed for case reports, case series, review and systematic reviews since 2005 with the keywords “anaphylaxis” and “patent blue”. We then included articles found in these publications’ reference sections. Results: We found 12 relevant publications regarding this topic. The main findings are summarized, with information regarding the clinical presentation, management, and investigation protocol. Hypotension is the most common clinical manifestation. The presentation is usually delayed when compared with anaphylaxis from other agents and cutaneous manifestations are occasionally absent. Patients may have had previous exposure to the dye, used also as a food, clothes and drug colorant. Conclusion: The diagnosis of anaphylaxis in patients under sedation or general anesthesia may be difficult due to particularities of the perioperative context. According to the published literature, the presentation of the reaction is similar in most cases and a heightened clinical sense is key to address the situation appropriately. Finding the agent responsible for the allergic reaction is of paramount importance to prevent future episodes.

Bone marrow edema (BME) is the term given to the abnormal fluid signal seen within the bone marrow on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It usually indicates the presence of underlying pathology and is associated with a myriad of conditions/causes. However, it can be misleading, as in some cases, it may be associated with normal changes in the bone, especially during the growth period of childhood, and objective methods for assessment are lacking. In this work, learning models for BME detection were developed. Transfer learning was used to overcome the size limitations of the dataset, and two different regions of interest (ROI) were defined and compared to evaluate their impact on the performance of the model: bone segmention and intensity mask. The best model was obtained for the high intensity masking technique, which achieved a balanced accuracy of 0.792 ± 0.034. This study represents a comparison of different models and data regularization techniques for BME detection and showed promising results, even in the most difficult range of ages: children and adolescents. The application of machine learning methods will help to decrease the dependence on the clinicians, providing an initial stratification of the patients based on the probability of edema presence and supporting their decisions on the diagnosis.

Descrevemos o caso de uma paciente de 49 anos de idade, submetida à tumorectomia de mama esquerda com estadiamento de linfonodo sentinela, em que se empregou o APV e que apresentou reação anafilática. Método: Por meio do PubMed, pesquisamos publicações que documentavam relatos de casos, séries de casos, revisões e revisões sistemáticas desde 2005 usando as palavras-chave “anaphylaxis” e “patent blue”. Em seguida, incluímos artigos encontrados na lista de referências dessas publicações. Resultados: Encontramos 12 publicações relevantes sobre o tópico. Os principais achados estão resumidos, com informações do quadro clínico, tratamento e protocolo de investigação. A hipotensão foi a manifestação clínica mais frequente. De forma geral, o quadro clínico tem início tardio quando comparado à anafilaxia por outros agentes e, ocasionalmente, as manifestações cutâneas estão ausentes. Os pacientes podem ter tido exposição prévia ao APV, que também é usado como corante de alimentos, roupas e medicamentos. Conclusão: O diagnóstico de anafilaxia em pacientes sob sedação ou anestesia geral pode ser difícil devido às peculiaridades do contexto perioperatório. Segundo a literatura publicada, a apresentação da reação é semelhante na maioria dos casos e um discernimento clínico aguçado é fundamental para enfrentar o evento adequadamente. Encontrar o agente responsável pela reação alérgica é essencial para a prevenção de futuros episódios.

Abstract Background Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress experienced during childhood might have a negative impact on development. This study explores factors associated with such symptoms among Portuguese primary school-aged children. Methods A sample of children (n = 1022, mean age = 8.77 years old) was recruited in public and private schools from the cities of Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto, Portugal. The children’s version of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-C) was self-administered. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to measure associations (expressed as Odds Ratio, OR and 95% Confidence Intervals, CI) between each DASS-C subscale, dichotomized by its 4th vs. 3rd or less quartiles (symptoms increase with scores), and covariates: child sex, age, socioeconomic status (SES), sports activity beyond school, children self-assessed health status, child and mother’s body mass index and mother’s DASS scores. Results Age was negatively associated with anxiety symptoms (adjusted OR, 95% CI: 0.70, 0.57–0.87) and girls, compared to boys, presented lower odds of depressive and stress symptoms (adjusted OR, 95% CI: 0.65, 0.47–0.92 and 0.57, 0.41–0.80, respectively). A low socioeconomic status was associated with more frequent symptoms of stress (adjusted OR, 95%CI for low compared to high SES: 1.61, 1.01–2.56). Children with poorer self-assessed health status and whose mothers scored higher in the DASS also presented significantly higher odds of scoring in the 4th quartile (vs. 3rd or less) of the three DASS-C subscales. Conclusions These results suggest the need to tailor preventive efforts targeting childhood mental health symptoms.

The Covid-19 Pandemic Policy Monitor (COV-PPM) dataset prospectively documents non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) taken to contain SARS-Cov-2 transmission across countries in EU27, EEA and UK. In Germany, measures have also been recorded at the federal state and, partially, at the district levels. NPIs implemented since January 2020 have been retrieved and updated weekly from March 2020, from official governments webpages, Ministries of Health, National (Public) Health Institutes or Administrations. NPI categories collected refer to restrictions, closures or changes in functioning implemented in 13 domains: public events (gatherings in indoor or outdoor spaces); public institutions (kindergartens, schools, universities); public spaces (shops, bars, restaurants); public transport (trains, buses, trams, metro); citizens movement/mobility (e.g. pedestrians, cars, ships); border closures (air, land or sea, all incoming travels, from high-risk regions, only non-nationals); measures to improve the healthcare system (e.g. human resources or technical reinforcement, redistribution, material or infrastructural); measures for risk/vulnerable groups (e.g. elderly, chronically ill, pregnant); economic measures (e.g. lay-off rules establishment, actions to avoid job-loss, tax relaxation); testing policies (e.g. testing criteria changes); nose and mouth protection rules, vaccination and others/miscellaneous measures.

Smart water consumption metering can provide data at a much more specific spatial and temporal resolution. In this context, smart meters provide essential information for developing customer consumption models, which can be used to modify behavior, favor water savings, and bring other benefits. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the benefits of the smart metering system implemented in the pilot project for the individualization of water consumption in a residential block in the city of Brasília/DF, Brazil. To assess the benefits, two scenarios were considered: the first contemplated only the implementation of the system, whereas the second contemplated the possible impact of establishing a detailed temporary water balancing system and a leak alarm system for the consumer units. The results revealed that the adoption of these two features resulted in a financial return that was 8.5 times higher than average.

R E S U M O Esse trabalho é parte complementar de uma pesquisa de pós-graduação que tem como objetivo avaliar a perda de solo na bacia do rio Santa Maria do Doce (Espírito Santos), vez que a região vem sofrendo pressão antrópica quanto ao uso do solo. Nesse sentido, devido ao desencadeamento de problemáticas ambientais diversos, modelos matemáticos foram desenvolvidos a fim de realizar o levantamento dos processos erosivos, com vistas a projetos e pesquisas de conservação. O advento dos sistemas de informações geográficas-SIG’s veio auxiliar essas análises, com a possibilidade de realizar mensurações espaciais a níveis regionais e globais. A partir disso, os parâmetros da Equação Universal Revisada de Perda de Solo-RUSLE foram espacializados pela área da bacia de interesse, resultando em um valor médio de perda de solo de 26,60 t.ha-1.ano-1. A região sudeste da bacia teve destaque por apresentar áreas de valor muito superior à média, possivelmente pelo uso agrícola em consonância a um relevo acidentado, alta taxa pluviométrica e solo do tipo Cambissolo. Em relação a produção de sedimentos enviado ao curso principal do rio Doce, o valor estimado de contribuição é de 5,33 t.ha-1.ano-1. Palavras-Chaves: RUSLE, Perda de solo, Produção de sedimentos. Survey of soil loss and sediment production in the Santa Maria do Doce (Brazil) river basin by mathematical modeling. A B S T R A C T This work is a complementary part of the postgraduate research that aims to evaluate the soil loss in the Santa Maria do Doce river basin, in the state of Espírito Santo, since the region has been suffering anthropogenic pressure in terms of land use. In this sense, due to the triggering of various environmental problems, mathematical models were developed in order to carry out a survey of erosive processes, in the face of projects and research aimed at their conservation. The advent of geographic information systems-GIS's came to help these analyses, with the possibility of performing spatial measurements at regional and global levels. From this, the parameters of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation-RUSLE were spatialized by the catchment area of interest, resulting in an average soil loss value of 26.60 t.ha-1.year-1. The southeastern region of the basin stood out for presenting areas with a value much higher than the average, possibly due to agricultural use in consonance with a rugged relief, high rainfall and Cambisol-type soil.. Regarding the production of sediments sent to the main course of the Doce River, the estimated contribution value is 5.33 t.ha-1.year-1. Keywords: RUSLE, Soil loss, Sediment production.

Background: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) may be at risk for COVID19. We synthesised evidence on SARS-Cov-2 infection, transmission, outcomes of disease, effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI), and the effectiveness of strategies for infection prevention and control (IPC). Methods: Systematic review of articles, indexed in electronic databases (EMBASE, WHOCovid19, Web of Science), institutional websites and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health's live map of COVID-19 evidence, and published from December 1st, 2019, to March 3rd, 2021. Empirical papers of any study design addressing Covid-19 and health(-related) outcomes in PEH or shelters’ staff were included. (PROSPERO-2020-CRD42020187033) Findings: Of 536 publications, 37 studies were included (two modelling, 31 observational, four qualitative studies). Random-effect meta-analysis yields a baseline SARS-Cov-2 prevalence of 2•32% (95% Confidence-Interval, 95%CI=1•30–3•34) in PEH and 1•55% (95%CI=0•79–2•31) in staff. In outbreaks, the pooled prevalence increases to 31•59% (95%CI=20•48–42•71) in PEH and 14•80% (95%CI=10•73–18•87) in staff. Main IPC strategies were universal rapid testing, expansion of non-congregate housing, and in-shelter measures (bed spacing, limited staff rotation, reduction in number of residents). Interpretation: 32% of PEH and 15% staff are infected during outbreaks of SARS-Cov-2 in homeless shelters. Most studies were conducted in the USA. No studies were found quantifying health-related outcomes of NPI. Overview and evaluation of IPC strategies for PEH, a better understanding of disease transmission, and reliable data on PEH within Covid-19 notification systems are needed. Qualitative studies may serve to voice PEH and shelter staff experiences, and guide future evaluations and IPC strategies. Funding: None.

Maraging steels are martensitic steels hardened by precipitation during thermal aging, with good machining properties and high strength and corrosion resistance. It is well suited for applications which require high strength-to-weight material, being used in aerospace, aeronautics and nuclear industries. A protective and corrosion resistant oxide layer can be formed during age hardening if treated in steam atmosphere. This work aims to use grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) to evaluate qualitatively the thickness of the layers formed during this process. GIXRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to identify and order the layered structure formed on four specimens of maraging steel grade 300 with different surface finishes that were previously solution annealed twice at (950 ± 5) °C for 1 h, air-cooled, and submitted to oxidation process under positive pressure around 1.5 kPa of steam at (480 ± 5) °C for 6 h followed by forced air cooling. The diffraction patterns were measured employing CuKα radiation and parallel beam, in step scan mode, using incident angles varying from 0.2º to 4.0º and 20º < 2θ < 85º. The results revealed the formation of two layers, the innermost was formed by γ-iron (austenite – fcc) phase followed by a mixture of oxides (hematite and magnetite) on the top, regardless of surface finish, which was confirmed by the SEM analysis that also allowed the measurement of the average layer’s thickness of oxides (1.130 ± 0.094) µm and austenite (0.507 ± 0.090) µm phases, and corroborated the qualitative thicknesses analysis made from GIXRD results.

The end of Moore’s Law aligned with data privacy concerns is forcing machine learning (ML) to shift from the cloud to the deep edge. In the next-generation ML systems, the inference and part of the training process will perform at the edge, while the cloud stays responsible for major updates. This new computing paradigm, called federated learning (FL), alleviates the cloud and network infrastructure while increasing data privacy. Recent advances empowered the inference pass of quantized artificial neural networks (ANNs) on Arm Cortex-M and RISC-V microcontroller units (MCUs). Nevertheless, the training remains confined to the cloud, imposing the transaction of high volumes of private data over a network and leading to unpredictable delays when ML applications attempt to adapt to adversarial environments. To fill this gap, we make the first attempt to evaluate the feasibility of ANN training in Arm Cortex-M MCUs. From the available optimization algorithms, stochastic gradient descent (SGD) has the best trade-off between accuracy, memory footprint, and latency. However, its original form and the variants available in the literature still do not fit the stringent requirements of Arm Cortex-M MCUs. We propose L-SGD, a lightweight implementation of SGD optimized for maximum speed and minimal memory footprint in this class of MCUs. We developed a floating-point version and another that operates over quantized weights. For a fully-connected ANN trained on the MNIST dataset, L-SGD (float-32) is 4.20× faster than the SGD while requiring only 2.80% of the memory with negligible accuracy loss. Results also show that quantized training is still unfeasible to train an ANN from the scratch but is a lightweight solution to perform minor model fixes and counteract the fairness problem in typical FL systems.

Optical biosensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are the future of label-free detection methods. This work reports the development of plasmonic thin films, containing Au nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 matrix, as platforms for LSPR biosensors. Post-deposition treatments were employed, namely annealing at 400 °C, to develop an LSPR band, and Ar plasma, to improve the sensitivity of the Au-TiO2 thin film. Streptavidin and biotin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were chosen as the model receptor–analyte, to prove the efficiency of the immobilization method and to demonstrate the potential of the LSPR-based biosensor. The Au-TiO2 thin films were activated with O2 plasma, to promote the streptavidin immobilization as a biorecognition element, by increasing the surface hydrophilicity (contact angle drop to 7°). The interaction between biotin and the immobilized streptavidin was confirmed by the detection of HRP activity (average absorbance 1.9 ± 0.6), following a protocol based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Furthermore, an LSPR wavelength shift was detectable (0.8 ± 0.1 nm), resulting from a plasmonic thin-film platform with a refractive index sensitivity estimated to be 33 nm/RIU. The detection of the analyte using these two different methods proves that the functionalization protocol was successful and the Au-TiO2 thin films have the potential to be used as an LSPR platform for label-free biosensors.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the Western world. In recent years, natural herbal and dietary supplements have become widely available to the general public and have increased in popularity. Reports of idiosyncratic liver injury caused by such supplements have also increased over the last decade. Horse chestnut is a herb used in dietary supplements primarily for complications of venous insufficiency. Clinically significant acute liver injury has been very rarely associated with its use. We present the case of a 70-year-old man with idiosyncratic horse chestnut-induced liver injury.

ABSTRACT In this paper we synthesize the special sessions of the XXIII Brazilian Water Resources Symposium 2019 in order to understand the major advances and challenges in the water sciences in Brazil. We analyzed more than 250 papers and presentations of 16 special sessions covering topics of Climate Variability and Change, Disasters, Modeling, Large Scale Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Education, and Water Resources Management. This exercise highlighted the unique diversity of natural and human water features in Brazil, that offers a great opportunity for understanding coupled hydrological and societal systems. Most contributions were related to methods and the quantification of water phenomena, therefore, there is a clear necessity for fostering more research on phenomena comprehension. There is a vast network of co-authorship among institutions but mostly from academia and with some degree of regional fragmentation. The ABRhidro community now has the challenge to enhance its collaboration network, the culture of synthesis analysis, and to build a common agenda for water resources research. It is also time for us to be aligned with the international water science community and to use our experiences to actively contribute to the tackling of global water issues.

When performing In-Circuit Tests (ICTs) of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), there are certain phenomena related with strain analysis that must be known in order to obtain stronger and more accurate testing results. During testing, PCBs are often subjected to mechanical bending efforts that induce excessive strain. This study focuses on the building of a Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) methodology that prevents excessive bending strain in critical points of a PCB during an ICT. To validate this methodology, a set of experimental tests, matched with a set of FEA, were carried out. Thus, companies, before the development of an ICT machine (fixture), will be able to use this FEA methodology to predict whether the maximum strain of a PCB under study, when subjected to its ICT, will damage it, thus reducing unnecessary production costs. A guideline was thus designed to enable the creation of the most representative Finite Elements Model (FEM) for any PCB, based on its amount and direction of copper traces.

Information on the extent of violence against women is scarce in Angola. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of violence against pregnant women in Angola and to identify its sociodemographic determinants and effects on pregnancy outcomes. A cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2012 and February 2013, involving 995 women who delivered at a Maternity in Luanda, Angola. Information was collected through questionnaires administered by interviewers. The prevalence of violence during pregnancy was 13.0%. Exclusively physical, psychological or sexual violence was reported by 4.3%, 7.7% and 0.2% of the women, respectively. After adjustment, the occurrence of physical violence decreased with increasing age and education, and was more common among women who consumed alcohol during pregnancy, while psychological violence was significantly more frequent among women aged 20 to 24 years and those who had their first sexual intercourse before the age of 15, and less frequent among those who were married or in cohabitation. This first study describing violence against pregnant Angolan women showed that violence is a frequent event, supporting that violence assessment should be considered in antenatal care.

Background: Asylum seekers and refugees (ASR) experience substantial changes in subjective social status (SSS), pre and post migration, which may affect their mental health. However, the effect of SSS mobility on mental health among ASR has been underexplored so far. Methods: Population-based cross-sectional study among a random sample of 560 adult ASR living in 64 collective accommodation centres in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. SSS in the country of origin before emigration and in Germany was assessed with a multi-lingual, adapted version of the MacArthur social ladder. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL), anxiety and depressive symptoms were measured as mental health outcomes. Generalized linear regression models were fitted to estimate associations between changes in SSS and each outcome. Results: A perceived loss of three or more steps in SSS from origin to Germany (compared to no change) was associated with poorer scores in HRQoL (B, standardized coefficient = -2.679, standard error, se = 1.351, p = 0.047), with more depressive symptoms (B = 1.156, se = 0.389, p = 0.003) and anxiety (B = 0.971, se = 0.432, p = 0.025), in models adjusted for SSS in country of origin. The strength and direction of associations remained after adjusting for sex, age, education and time since arrival (HRQoL: B = -2.494, se = 1.351, p = 0.066; depression: B = 1.048, se = 0.393, p = 0.008; anxiety: B = 1.006, se = 0.438, p = 0.022). Conclusion: ASR experiencing downward SSS mobility present poorer mental health compared to those experiencing no change in SSS. Early integration efforts and intersectoral measures to counter social downward mobility could prevent poor mental health among ASR.

As an innovation to conventional biomass pyrolysis to produce liquid biofuels, different types of biomass wastes were pre-treated by autohydrolysis, prior to pyrolysis. Eucalyptus forestry waste, corn cobs agricultural residue, and miscanthus (an energy crop) were autohydrolysed. Autohydrolysis led to valuable sugar-rich stream that may be used in fermentation and to solids rich in lignin that were pyrolysed. Pyrolysis of autohydrolysed eucalyptus led to an increase in liquids yields of 24 % in relation to untreated eucalyptus, as autohydrolysis weakened initial macromolecular structure and thus helped chemical bonds breakdown during pyrolysis. However, similar pyrolysis liquid yields were obtained by autohydrolysed or untreated corn cobs and miscanthus, thus feedstock composition is an important issue. Nevertheless, the production of added value products by autohydrolysis may still justify this pre-treatment. Otherwise, more severe pre-treatments of these biomasses might improve co-pyrolysis as it happened with eucalyptus. As polyethylene (PE) is easier to pyrolyse than biomass and greatly favours the production of liquid hydrocarbons, autohydrolysed and untreated biomass was mixed with PE wastes to be used in co-pyrolysis. The rise of PE content in the blend clearly favoured the production of liquid products of pre-treated and untreated biomass. 75 %wt. of PE in the blend led to liquid yields of 72 %wt. for untreated eucalyptus and of 82 %wt. for autohydrolysed eucalyptus.

Do people want to be vaccinated against COVID-19? Herd immunity is dependent on individuals’ willingness to be vaccinated since vaccination is not mandatory. Our main goal was to investigate people’s intention to be vaccinated and their intentions to vaccinate their children. Moreover, we were interested in understanding the role of the personal characteristics, psychological factors, and the lockdown context on that decision. Therefore, we conducted an online survey during the lockdown in Portugal (15 January 2021 until 14 March 2021). Participants completed a socio-demographic questionnaire, questions about their intentions of being vaccinated, concerns about the vaccine, a COVID-19 attitudes and beliefs scale, a COVID-19 vaccine attitudes and beliefs scale, and the Domain-Specific Risk-Taking (DOSPERT) Scale. Our results showed that from the 649 participants, 63% of the participants reported being very likely to have the vaccine, while 60% reported being very likely to vaccinate their children. We conducted two linear regression models, explaining 65% of the variance for personal vaccination and 56% of the variance for children vaccination. We found that the COVID-19 vaccine general beliefs and attitudes were the main determinants of vaccination intention. Additionally, our proposed artificial neural network model was able to predict with 85% accuracy vaccination intention. Thus, our results suggest that psychological factors are an essential determinant of vaccination intention. Thus, public policy decision makers may use these insights for predicting vaccine hesitancy and designing effective vaccination communication strategies.

Resumo: Introdução e objetivos: A prevalência da hipertensão arterial em Portugal situa‐se entre 29,1 e 42,2%. Estudos internacionais revelam que 13% são mascaradas e 13% dos diagnósticos baseados na pressão arterial medida no consultório são hipertensão bata‐branca. Métodos de medição da pressão arterial mais sensíveis e específicos podem evitar custos associados a erros de diagnóstico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão sobre a relação custo‐efetividade da monitorização ambulatória da pressão arterial (MAPA) comparativamente a outros métodos na abordagem da hipertensão arterial. Métodos: Realizou‐se uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados CMA Infobase, Guidelines Finder, NGC, Bandolier, Clinical Evidence, Cochrane Library, DARE, Medline, Trip Database, SumSearch e Índex das Revistas Médicas Portuguesas. Pesquisaram‐se artigos publicados entre janeiro de 2005 e agosto de 2015 nas línguas portuguesa, inglesa e espanhola, usando os termos MeSH «Hypertension», «Blood Pressure Monitoring, Ambulatory» e «Cost‐Benefit Analysis» e os DeCS «Hipertensão», «Monitorização Ambulatorial da Pressão Arterial» e «Análise Custo‐Benefício». Atribuíram‐se níveis de evidência e força de recomendação segundo a escala da Oxford Centre for Evidence‐Based Medicine. Resultados: Foram identificados 525 artigos. Incluíram‐se cinco estudos originais e uma norma de orientação clínica. Todos relatam que a MAPA é a mais custo‐efetiva. Dois associam‐na a melhor controlo da pressão arterial. Um estudo português mostrou uma economização de 23%. Conclusões: A evidência revela que a MAPA é custo‐efetiva, evitando iatrogenia e gastos com tratamento (força de recomendação B). Os estudos incluídos constituem uma base sólida, mas impõe‐se reprodutibilidade em estudos não fundamentados maioritariamente em modelos analíticos. Abstract: Introduction and Objectives: The prevalence of hypertension in Portugal is between 29.1% and 42.2%. International studies show that 13% of individuals have masked hypertension and 13% of diagnoses based on office blood pressure measurements are in fact white coat hypertension. More sensitive and specific blood pressure measuring methods could avoid costs associated with misdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to review the cost‐effectiveness of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) compared to other methods in the management of hypertension. Methods: We performed a literature search in CMA Infobase, Guidelines Finder, National Guideline Clearinghouse, Bandolier, BMJ Clinical Evidence, the Cochrane Library, DARE, Medline, the Trip Database, SUMSearch and Índex das Revistas Médicas Portuguesas. We researched articles published between January 2005 and August 2015 in Portuguese, English and Spanish, using the MeSH terms “Hypertension”, “Blood Pressure Monitoring, Ambulatory” and “Cost‐Benefit Analysis” and the Portuguese search terms “Hipertensão”, “Monitorização Ambulatorial da Pressão Arterial” and “Análise Custo‐Benefício”. Levels of evidence and grades of recommendation were attributed according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence‐Based Medicine scale. Results: Five hundred and twenty‐five articles were identified. We included five original studies and one clinical practice guideline. All of them state that ABPM is the most cost‐effective method. Two report better blood pressure control, and a Portuguese study revealed a saving of 23%. Conclusions: The evidence shows that ABPM is cost‐effective, avoiding iatrogenic effects and reducing expenditure on treatment (grade of recommendation B). The included studies provide a solid basis, but further evidence of reproducibility is needed in research that is not based mainly on analytical models. Introduction: This study aimed to describe demographic, socioeconomic and pregnancy-related characteristics associated with a caesarean delivery in Luanda. Material and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study which included 995 puerperal women and who were assessed between December 2012 and February 2013 at Lucrécia Paím maternity hospital in Luanda, Angola. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire administered by trained interviewers. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate the magnitude of associations (odds ratios—95% confidence intervals) between the type of delivery and variables showing a significant association in the bivariate analysis. Results: The prevalence of caesarean section was 44%. Women with caesarean delivery were less educated, resided more often in a periurban area and were more likely to disclose lower family income when compared with women who had vaginal delivery. Living in a periurban area was significantly associated with a caesarean delivery regardless of all covariates considered, for primiparous women (adjusted odds ratios, 95% confidence intervals = 2.14, 1.27 – 3.62) and for multiparous women (1.78, 1.26 – 2.51). Among multiparous women, a lower family income was also significantly associated with caesarean delivery. Hypertensive disorders during the current pregnancy were associated with a caesarean delivery in the multivariate models fitted for primiparous (3.96, 1.57 – 9.98) and for multiparous women (1.68, 1.03 – 2.74). Discussion: The associations between low socioeconomic position and high risk of caesarean delivery demonstrated in this study are consistent results in previous researches curried out in African contexts. The poorer and less educated women, who live far from health facilities, have few antenatal care visits and often arrive with complicated conditions, justifying a caesarean delivery. Lack of qualified human and material resources to manage emergencies in peripheral health centers and delaying in the reference system also leads to an increase in the number of caesareans performed in this particular maternity hospital. Conclusion: Sociodemographic differences were observed according to the type of delivery. Cesarean section was more prevalent among women with lower income and residents in periurban areas.

ABSTRACT In the Brazilian Cerrado biome, there are wetlands locally known as “Veredas”, which are swampy plains between hills and rivers. Since the 1970’s, the Cerrado biome has been gradually converted to livestock, crop, or forestry production. Until now, very few studies were conducted to evaluate the baseline contents of trace elements in Cerrado wetland soils. Due to their position in the landscape (bottom lands), the wetlands are potentially susceptible to contamination by runoff and/or leaching from surrounding areas at higher altitudes. This work evaluated the As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe contents in soils from six wetlands (undisturbed and disturbed) in the Minas Gerais Triangle region, Brazil. In each wetland, we collected topsoil samples (0.00-0.20 m layer) and subsurface samples (0.40-0.70 m layer) at different landscape positions in the wetlands (upper, middle, and bottom positions). The soil samples were air-dried, ground, and sieved through 2-mm mesh. Afterwards, the soil digestion was performed according to the USEPA 3051A protocol, and the trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (flame or graphite furnace atomization). Water samples were also collected monthly from September 2014 to September 2015 to determine the elemental composition by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The contents of all soil trace elements studied were below the threshold values established by Brazilian guidelines. The soil trace element (cations and/or oxyanions) distributions varied according to soil depth and organic matter content. Our findings contribute to the sparse inventory of Brazilian Cerrado wetlands regarding trace-element contents.

Introdução: Doenças cardiovasculares são a principal causa de mortalidade, no Brasil e no mundo. Estudos em amostra populacional brasileira, fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento de doenças cardiovasculares são escassos. Objetivo: Estimar a prevalência de hipertensão arterial (HA) e cardiopatias e examinar a associação de estado nutricional, risco cardiovascular (RC) e sedentarismo com os desfechos. Métodos: Estudo transversal em amostra aleatória populacional de Aracaju-SE, com 399 participantes. Utilizou-se o teste t de Student e o teste c2 para comparar os dados por sexo. Para avaliar o efeito preditor das variáveis de exposição sobre os desfechos utilizou-se a razão de chances (odds ratio: OR). Resultados: Houve diferenças significativas, segundo sexo, em consumo de álcool, risco cardiovascular, obesidade grau II e HA, cuja prevalência foi significativamente maior entre homens (43,4%) comparando com mulheres (26,3%). Peso normal mostrou-se como fator protetor para HA (OR=0,44; IC95% 0,27-0,73). ObjectivesMaternal health care improvement and reduction of maternal and child mortality are priorities of the global health agenda. In Angola, maternal mortality remains high and the risk of pregnancy-related death was 1 in 32 during 2015. This study aims to identify demographic and social factors influencing antenatal care and health facility delivery among women in Dande and to understand their impact on birth outcomes.MethodsThis study is based on community-based longitudinal data collected by the Dande Health and Demographic Surveillance System between 2009 and 2015. Data on pregnancy outcomes (10,289 outcomes of 8,066 women) were collected for all reported pregnancies, including sociodemographic information, health services utilisation and women's reproductive history. Logistic regression was used to investigate the determinants of birth outcomes, antenatal care attendance and institutionalised delivery.FindingsOf the 10,289 pregnancy outcomes, 98.5% resulted in live births, 96.8% attended antenatal care, and 82.5% had four or more visits. Yet, 50.7% of the women delivered outside a health facility. Antenatal care attendance was a determinant of birth outcomes (stillbirth: unadjusted OR = 0.34 95% CI = 0.16-0.70; abortion: OR = 0.07 95% CI = 0.04-0.12). Older women, with lower education, living at a greater distance of a health facility and in rural areas, were less likely to use maternal health care. Having had previous pregnancies, namely resulting in live births, also decreased the likelihood of health care utilization by pregnant women.ConclusionsThe study identifies relevant social determinants for the utilisation of antenatal care, place of delivery and their impact on birth outcome, thereby providing insight on how best to address inequities in health care utilization.

Abstract Background The Dande Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) located in Bengo Province, Angola, covers nearly 65,500 residents living in approximately 19,800 households. This study aims to describe the main causes of deaths (CoD) occurred within the HDSS, from 2009 to 2012, and to explore associations between demographic or socioeconomic factors and broad mortality groups (Group I—Communicable diseases, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions; Group II—Non-communicable diseases; Group III—Injuries; IND—Indeterminate). Methods Verbal Autopsies (VA) were performed after death identification during routine HDSS visits. Associations between broad groups of CoD and sex, age, education, socioeconomic position, place of residence and place of death, were explored using chi-square tests and fitting logistic regression models. Results From a total of 1488 deaths registered, 1009 verbal autopsies were performed and 798 of these were assigned a CoD based on the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Mortality was led by CD (61.0 %), followed by IND (18.3 %), NCD (11.6 %) and INJ (9.1 %). Intestinal infectious diseases, malnutrition and acute respiratory infections were the main contributors to under-five mortality (44.2 %). Malaria was the most common CoD among children under 15 years old (38.6 %). Tuberculosis, traffic accidents and malaria led the CoD among adults aged 15–49 (13.5 %, 10.5 % and 8.0 % respectively). Among adults aged 50 or more, diseases of the circulatory system (23.2 %) were the major CoD, followed by tuberculosis (8.2 %) and malaria (7.7 %). CD were more frequent CoD among less educated people (adjusted odds ratio, 95 % confidence interval for none vs. 5 or more years of school: 1.68, 1.04–2.72). Conclusion Infectious diseases were the leading CoD in this region. Verbal autopsies proved useful to identify the main CoD, being an important tool in settings where vital statistics are scarce and death registration systems have limitations.

Resumo Previsões de vazão de médio prazo, que são geradas utilizando um modelo chuva-vazão forçado por previsões numéricas de precipitação, são muito úteis para a antecipação de eventos hidrológicos. Tradicionalmente estas previsões eram geradas de forma determinística, porém na última década o movimento por geração de previsões de vazão por conjunto vem ganhando força. No meio termo entre estas duas técnicas (determinísticas e por conjunto) o uso da informação de persistência de previsões determinísticas de vazão para a tomada de decisões, usando ela como uma medida do grau de incerteza dos resultados aparenta ser uma estratégia interessante. Esta pesquisa investiga justamente estes possíveis benefícios do uso da persistência, das previsões como informação de incerteza. Os resultados sugerem que o uso da previsão com base na persistência apresenta vantagens sobre a previsão simples determinística nos horizontes de previsão mais distantes.

ABSTRACT System for hydrological forecasting and alert running in an operational way are important tools for floods impacts reduction. The present study describes the development and results evaluation of an operational discharge forecasting system of the upper Uruguay River basin, sited in Southern Brazil. Developed system was operated every day to provide experimental forecasts with special interest for Barra Grande and Campos Novos hydroelectric power plants reservoirs inflow, with 10 days in advance. We present results of inflow forecasted for floods occurred between July 2013 to July 2016, the period which the system was operated. Forecasts results by visual and performance metrics analysis showed a good fit with observations in most cases, with possibility of floods occurrence being well predicted with antecedence of 2 to 3 days. Comparing the locations, it was noted that the sub-basin of Campos Novos, being slower in rainfall-runoff transformation, is easier forecasted. The difference in predictability between the two basins can be observed by the coefficient of persistence, which is positive from 12h in Barra Grande and from 24h to Campos Novos. These coefficient values also show the value of the rainfall-runoff modeling for forecast horizons of more than one day in the basins.

A esquistossomose mansônica é uma doença parasitária causada pelo helminto Schistosoma mansoni. A sua forma ectópica mais grave e incapacitante é a mielorradiculopatia esquistossomótica (MRE), caracterizada por atingir o sistema nervoso central. Atualmente, o uso da Realidade Virtual para o tratamento das sequelas de doenças neurológicas vem se desenvolvendo gradativamente. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a influência da Realidade Virtual (RV) sobre as funções neuromotoras de uma portadora de MRE. O estudo foi realizado com um indivíduo do sexo feminino, 30 anos de idade, com diagnóstico clínico de MRE e sem experiência prévia com o Nintendo Wii® ou similares. O procedimento de avaliação adotado visou à descrição e análise do comprometimento causado pelas afeções da MRE. A paciente foi avaliada, submetida à fisioterapia utilizando o Nintendo Wii® e a plataforma Wii Balance Board® que consistiu de 20 sessões com duração de 1 hora e frequência de três vezes por semana; após o tratamento a paciente foi reavaliada. Os resultados demonstraram que para a voluntária em estudo, a RV foi uma ferramenta eficaz na reabilitação neuromotora de MRE.

Industrial water circuits (IWC) are frequently neglected as they are auxiliary circuits of industrial processes, leading to a missing awareness of their energy- and water-saving potential. Industrial sectors such as steel, chemicals, paper and food processing are notable in their water-related energy requirements. Improvement of energy efficiency in industrial processes saves resources and reduces manufacturing costs. The paper presents a cooling IWC of a steel wire processing plant in which steel billets are transformed into wire. The circuit was built in object-oriented language in OpenModelica and validated with real plant data. Several improvement measures have been identified and an optimisation methodology has been proposed. A techno-economic analysis has been carried out to estimate the energy savings and payback time for the proposed improvement measures. The suggested measures allow energy savings up to 29% in less than 3 years’ payback time and water consumption savings of approximately 7.5%.
