10. Observability preservation under sensor failure

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the study of observability in a structural framework. It turns out that the system is structurally observable if and only if the system is output connected and contains no contraction. We focus our attention on the observability preservation under sensor failure. We consider linear observable systems and we wonder if a given system remains observable in case of sensor failure. More precisely, we will characterize among the sensors those which are critical, i.e., which failure leads to observability loss, those which are useless for observability purpose and the set of those which are useful without being critical. Using a graph approach we classify the sensors with respect to their importance for output connection preservation, contraction avoidance and then observability preservation under sensor failure. 11. Sensor location for diagnosis in linear systems: a structural analysis

Abstract

We consider here the fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem for linear systems. We are interested in designing a set of observer-based residuals, in such a way that the transfer from the faults to the residuals is diagonal and the transfer from the disturbances to the residuals is zero. We deal with this problem when the system under consideration is structured, that is, the entries of the system matrices are either fixed zeros or free parameters. This problem can be solved in terms of the graph that can be associated in a natural way with a structured system. When the FDI solvability conditions are not satisfied, we assume that internal variables can be measured at a cost and look into the question of wether the problem is solvable with these new measurements. We give solvability conditions for a solution with a minimal number of additional sensors and among such solutions provide a minimal cost solution for the sensor location problem under consideration. We pay particular attention to the internal analysis of the system, and we propose a structural decomposition of the system associated graph based on some particular separators. This analysis leads to the definition of a reduced system. We prove that some potential additional sensors are inefficient for solving our FDI problem and that the FDI problem can be solved using only measurements on the reduced system. 16. Robust exponential stability of uncertain systems with time-varying delays

Abstract

This paper focuses on the problem of robust exponential stability of a class of uncertain systems described by functional differential equations with time-varying delays. The uncertainties are assumed to be continuous time-varying, nonlinear, and norm bounded. Sufficient conditions for robust exponential stability are given for both single and multiple delays cases. 19. Robust stabilization for uncertain time-delay systems containing saturating actuators

Abstract

A class of uncertain time-delay systems containing a saturating actuator is considered. These systems are characterized by delayed state equations (including a saturating actuator) with norm-bounded parameter uncertainty (possibly time varying) in the state and input matrices. The delay is assumed to be constant bounded but unknown. Using a Razumikhin approach for the stability of functional differential equations, upper bounds on the time delay are given such that the considered uncertain system is robustly stabilizable, in the case of constrained input, via memoryless state feedback control laws. These bounds are given in terms of solutions of appropriate finite dimensional Riccati equations.

20. Singularity-free adaptive pole placement using periodic controllers

Abstract

This note presents a globally convergent adaptive control scheme for nonminimum phase systems. The approach is based on a particular periodic pole-placement controller. An ad-hock parameter estimates correction procedure is used to prevent any possible singularities in the control law computation. Furthermore, a lower bound on the estimated model controllability is ensured. The a priori knowledge on the system is reduced to the process order.

Abstract

In this note a robustification procedure for the LQ state feedback design is presented. Such a procedure consists of choosing the state and input weighting matrices according to the kind of uncertainties on the system. Both cases, structured and norm bounded additive uncertainties, are addressed and upper bounds for the uncertainties that do not destabilize the closed-loop system are presented. Connections with the quadratic stabilizability problem are also established.

A tutorial introduction to the geometric theory of linear multivariable control equivalent to six hours of lecture in a graduate level engineering course is presented. Emphasis is on the intuitive control interpretation of main geometric concepts focusing on trajectory formulation for subspace invariance and discrete-time interpretations of basic subspaces and their construction algorithms. The application of geometric theory to the disturbance decoupling problem is used as an example.

National audience; L'étude à l'aide de graphes des propriétés des systèmes dynamiques qui dépendent essentiellement de leur structure, permet de résoudre de manière simple et pédagogique de nombreux problèmes d'observation et de commande. On donne un aperçu des différentes approches structurelles et on se focalise plus particulièrement sur les modèles à base de composants qui sont très utiles pour la conception de systèmes fiables. On développe à partir du treillis associé, des outils pour l'évaluation de la tolérance aux fautes des systèmes considérés et pour une propriété donnée. En particulier des mesures d'utilité des composants sont données pour des propriétés à satisfaire telles que l'observabilité ou la tolérance aux fautes de certaines propriétés. L'évaluation de l'importance de ces composants permet de décider de leur politique de maintenance ou de leur éventuelle duplication.

Abstract

International audience; Component based models are very useful for the design of reliable systems since they allow for an easy introduction of components faults. As basic components, sensors and actuators have motivated a huge amount of work. Evaluation issues are important during the system design, for example the usefulness of a component allows to decide its maintenance policy or duplication for redundancy. Few works have dealt with evaluation issues in the control community. In this presentation we develop a comprehensive lattice representation of component based systems models aimed at providing tools for fault tolerance evaluation. This general representation needs no specific asumption on the system. This simple framework allows to propose interesting usefulness measures of components. In this talk we describe the underlying ideas of this new representation and illustrate the results with very simple academic examples

Abstract

International audience; The lattice of component subsets is a very useful structure for addressing Fault Tolerance and Architecture Design problems, for systems described as a set of components. This paper presents a number of concepts and techniques that are associated with this lattice, to evaluate the degree of fault tolerance of a given property, and to classify components with respect to their usefulness for this property. Being very general, the approach needs no assumption on the system, nor on the properties to be satisfied, and allows both deterministic and probabilistic measures to be used. A sensor selection example illustrates the practical use of the proposed tools.

Abstract

National audience; Dans cet article nous présentons quelques éléments pour la modélisation et l'étude de systèmes dynamiques dont les propriétés sont essentiellement liées à la structure du système, c'est-à-dire aux relations existantes entre variables. Le modèle présenté permet l'étude de propriétés génériques (c'est-à-dire ne dépendant que de la structure et pas de la valeur particulière des paramètres) à partir d'un graphe associé au système. Les applications visées sont du domaine de l'automatique, en particulier des problèmes d'observation et de commande classiques. L'étude du graphe permet de tester si le problème considéré est soluble et, dans le cas où le problème n'a pas de solution, de guider le concepteur dans le choix de capteurs ou d'actionneurs à ajouter pour satisfaire la propriété. Elle permet aussi de quantifier l'importance de chaque capteur ou actionneur pour la conservation de la propriété en cas de défaillance de ceux-ci.

Abstract

International audience; This paper is concerned with the study of property preservation under sensor failure in a structured framework. We focus our attention on the observability preservation as well as the solvability preservation of Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) problem under sensor failure. More precisely we will characterize among the sensors those which are critical \emph{i.e.} which failure leads to property loss, those which are useless to hold the property and the set of those which are useful. In this paper we use parameterized models which are well fitted to describe structural properties of dynamical systems. Using a graph approach we classify the sensors with respect to their importance for the preservation of observability and solvability of FDI problem under sensor failure. The sensor classification for observability and FDI problem is performed on a distillation column example.

Abstract

16-17 November 2006, Nancy, France; International audience; We present a structural analysis for sensor location in the Fault Detection and Isolation problem. We deal with this problem when the system under consideration is structured, that is, the entries of the system matrices are either fixed zeros or free parameters. With such structured systems one can associate a graph. We define in this graph a set of separators (Input Separators) which allows us to get sets of system variables in which additional sensors must be implemented to solve the considered FDI Problem. It is shown that these separators parameterize all the solutions, and allow to choose among a set of potential additional sensors to solve the FDI problem.

Abstract

Dans ce travail on considère le problème de détection et localisation de défauts pour une classe générale de systèmes linéaires dépendant de paramètres : les systèmes linéaires structurés. On présente de manière synthétique un certain nombre de résultats des auteurs sur le sujet qui sont illustrés sur un modèle de colonne à distiller binaire. A partir de l'analyse structurelle on peut facilement, sur ce procédé ayant un défaut et une perturbation, montrer qu'un capteur supplémentaire est nécessaire pour résoudre le problème de diagnostic considéré indépendemment de la valeur des paramètres du système. L'analyse du graphe associé au système permet de déterminer les variables que le capteur doit mesurer.
