Although there is a vast body of work on legitimacy, we still have a limited understanding of the discursive aspects of moral legitimation. This is surprising considering the increase in morally laden societal discussions, for example related to understanding gender, rights and regulations during a pandemic, political scandals and ethics of global business amongst others. In particular, from an organization studies perspective, we lack knowledge on how journalists negotiate moral legitimation of controversial organizational decisions such as closures or shutdown decisions related to global industrial restructuring. Therefore, drawing on the critical discourse studies tradition, we examine the media coverage of controversial shutdowns in Finland over the past 2 decades. Our analysis suggests three moral legitimation types: moral engaging, moral distancing and moral surrendering. These types involve specific discursive moralization practices and strategies, and they each paint a different picture of the moral options, responsibility, and inevitability in these decisions. These types can be found in the same texts supporting each other, but they also help us understand how legitimation may involve a pattern where the most explicit reflections (moral engagement) are followed by more indirect (moral distancing) and less apparent but very powerful (moral surrendering) forms of legitimation. By so doing, we also offer a heuristic that can, with due caution, be used for analyzing other texts on adverse effects of globalization or events that might include moral and ideological conflicts. Despite increasing attention to rapport building or management in police discourse, existing research on how and why particular types of police units such as traffic police officers manage rapport with civilians is still in its infancy. This study draws on a revised model of rapport management to scrutinize a veteran Chinese traffic police officer's discursive management of rapport with civilians during traffic law enforcement. It finds that the officer almost invariably seeks to maintain or enhance rapport with respect to diverse rapport bases through various discursive practices. It is argued that the officer's predominant positive rapport management may signify his effort to meet the requirement of civilized law enforcement in contemporary China. The findings contribute to the rapport-relevant studies in the police discourse through identifying more rapport bases managed by a veteran Chinese traffic police officer, and offering a socio-cultural account of positive rapport management. • The case study reports how a veteran Chinese traffic police officer manages rapport with civilians. • It finds that the officer almost invariably manages positive rapport through various discursive practices. • It identifies undocumented rapport bases managed by the officer. • The officer's rapport management is in line with the requirement of civilized law enforcement in contemporary China. Pedagogies for movement learning have been affected by a gap between natural science and social science. The gap has meant that pedagogy tend to focus relatively more on either product, material context, and normative ways of moving, or process, learners, social context, and non-normative ways of moving. Here, I suggest that philosopher and physicist Karen Barad's agential realist perspective may offer a theoretical approach that can contribute to enact pedagogies for movement learning that go beyond the gap between "the natural" and "the social." Such an approach does, however, not entail a "mixture," or "blending," of natural and social science theory. Rather, the perspective is based on a particular notion of discursive practice as (re)conceptualized by Barad. This approach is illustrated in the article by an empirical example. Abstract In today’s rapidly changing world, technology has profoundly impacted our daily lives, making it increasingly difficult to predict what skills will be necessary for the future. To address this challenge, 21st-century skills have been proposed as a framework for shaping future education, in which one of the skills is technological literacy. How the latter is understood, positioned, and approached is influenced by discourses produced within and among various societal practices, such as the educational system. This article provides a glimpse of the discourse on technological literacy by exploring how “technological literacy” is portrayed within the visual cultures of four Swedish upper secondary VET programs. Our results indicate that the portrayals of becoming technologically literate for VET students vary among the programmes. However, they all emphasise practical and hands-on activities, where students can be seen engaging with various tools, equipment, and objects relevant to each programme’s field of study. Teamwork and peer-to-peer learning are also portrayed as central to these programmes, simultaneously as leadership roles and the distribution of responsibilities among students are commonly featured. While the programmes’ visual portrayals reflect diversity in ethnicity and gender, traditional gender roles are still (re)produced in the pictorials.

The article examines the discursive practices of modern Russian public discourse, which includes political communication as a necessary part. The author considers first of all those discursive practices and the corresponding speech acts that are magical in nature. Such types of speech acts are proposed to be called “the acts of magical embodiment”. The pronunciation of the act of magical embodiment leads to a change in the world, resulting from the release of mystic forces associated with both the speaker’s supernatural abilities and the participation of mysterious forces. Among the acts of magical embodiment, there are vows, curses, tabooing and overcoming the taboos (use of euphemisms and concealment), prohibitions, benevolence, spells, and others. The use of magical practices in public discourse has a long tradition in political communication, especially in the creation of slogans. In modern public communication, many speech practices of magical nature have a legal basis. Current practice suggests that every mention of a prohibited political actor is accompanied by an indication of the prohibition. The curse as an act of magical embodiment sometimes adjoins the practice of imposing restrictions on “foreign agents”. Concealment (tabooing and overcoming the taboos) is enforced by the law on the “right to be forgotten”.

The article discusses the communicative and functional intentionality of femininity and masculinity in terms of grammar and semantics. The research aims to analyze the communicative and functional orientation of femininity and masculinity, examining their relationship and/ or lack of correlation with feminine and masculine forms, and their manifestations in discursive practices. The article proposes distinguishing trends in contemporary feminization by diagnosing traditional- normative and gender-sensitive approaches to naming female individuals based on social status, profession, and title. Additionally, it seeks to determine the key factors driving public demand for the use of derived feminine forms. By comparing the functioning of feminine forms in the German language, the article identifies the main psychological, social, pragmatic, cognitive (including cognitive-behavioral and cultural-historical) factors that burden the national memory with noun forms for the nomination of female individuals in the modern Ukrainian language.

Выявлены особенности и специфические характеристики цифровой дипломатии как особого вида дипломатического дискурса. Ключевым отличием цифровой дипломатии от традиционной является специфическое коммуникативное пространство, основными коммуникативными каналами которого являются социальные сети, электронные СМИ, персональные блоги. Использование этих ресурсов позволяет акторам влиять на коммуникативное событие вне зависимости от расстояния и места нахождения, формировать у различных социальных групп глобального диалога общественное мнение. Новым возможностям, которые открывает цифровая дипломатия для обеспечения внешнеполитической деятельности, противостоят также и новые риски.

The focus of this research is on the concepts of “communicative strategy” and “discursive practice,” which are frequently used today without being tied to a specific linguistic paradigm. The objective was to clarify whether these concepts can be classified as cross-paradigmatic, meaning they are not limited to a specific linguistic paradigm. The study revealed that despite their apparent similarities, these concepts differ in several key characteristics and are aimed at solving different tasks. Additionally, it was found that the main differentiation between these phenomena occurs at the level of their association with different linguistic domains: discursive practice is an element of discourse (and therefore belongs to the discursive paradigm), while communicative strategy is an element of communication (and is thus considered within the framework of the communicative-pragmatic / linguo-communicative paradigm and speech act theory). Analysis of contemporary research focused on studying communicative strategies and discursive practices showed a prevalence of a more “narrow” interpretation of the concept of “discourse,” which allows for the identification of specific forms of communicative practices within discourse. Furthermore, there is a simplification in the understanding of the implementation of discursive practices.

Finland has repeatedly been presented as a "success story" of equality and education, promoter of human rights and included equality and human rights as part of national curricula. However, research has shown the slow progress of integrating topics of equality and human rights in teacher education despite hundreds of project-based interventions during the past 50 years. We used historically informed discursive reading drawing from the existent literature, human rights and equality policy documents, and data from student teachers (n = 311) about their perceptions. The theoretical framework in this article is grounded in critical and feminist theories. The aim is to analyse why student teachers still report receiving too little education in human rights and equality despite the improvements in human rights and equality education law and policy. We argue that Finnish teacher education has an ambivalent role of representing itself as "exceptional" while reproducing inequalities. Furthermore, this alleged "exceptionalism" does not enable a focus on equality and human rights policies goals. We constructed a general theoretical frame to re-examine critically the role of ambivalence, ignorance, and "innocence", which reproduce inequalities. Our analysis describes several discursive realities of public narratives and student teachers' experiences concerning equality and human rights education. This article provides a novel interpretation frame for the persisting inequalities in education in a country that profiles itself as a champion of human rights and equality. Based on our results, we suggest critical self-reflection for educational policy to advance continuous measures to affect structural inequalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper traces the dynamics of the interpretation of the grammatical nature of the vocative in Ukrainian grammars from the 16th century until the present. The subject of the analysis is the content and presentation of this category in two sections of Ukrainian grammar books: (1) morphological, which clarifies the status of the vocative in the inflectional paradigm of the noun, and (2) syntactic, in which the means of expressing address are characterized. Based on the findings of the research, various trends in the description of the vocative in different historical periods have been identified, in particular: (1) until the beginning of the 20th, it was unequivocally qualified as an equal member of the inflectional paradigm of the noun, equal to other cases; (2) from the beginning of the 20th century to 1933 was a period of competition between two theories (the vocative is a case the same as others or the vocative is not a true case, but a “special” form in the inflectional paradigm of the noun); (3) the canonization of the “fake case” status theory; (4) from 1991 to the present there has been an unanimity of authors in qualifying the vocative as a case. Comparing the stages of fundamental changes in the scientific definition of the vocative in grammars with defining events in the history of Ukraine provides the basis for discussions about the influence of socio–political factors on the representation of linguistic theories and the codification of the linguistic norms.

Introduction: The influence of culture on translation has been a prominent feature of translation studies in recent decades. The place of cultural knowledge in the formation and development of a translator’s cultural competence, however, remains debatable. This paper argues that, in addition to general knowledge of a target culture (history, geography, literature, traditions, artefacts, etc.), it is crucial to be aware of the most important components of its deep culture, i.e., its social organization and worldview, which in turn have a major impact on identity. The study further develops the notion of I-culture vs We-culture and their respective identities. We suggest that an awareness of such cultural factors should form part of translators’ essential knowledge about language and their professional training. Purpose: The study aims to reveal linguistic and discursive manifestations of lingua-cultural identity in translating a Russian text into English. We explore nuances in the use of the pronouns we, our vs. I, my as well as some other markers of we-identity vs I-identity in the original Russian text of Vladimir Putin’s speech at the Valday discussion club meeting (2021), and how these were translated into English in the translation text. Method: Selection of a text containing sufficient examples; close reading to identify lexico-grammatical features; comparison of source text and translation; analysis of examples; drawing conclusions. The texts were subjected to contrastive lexico-grammatical, pragmatic, and discourse analysis. Sociolinguistic and cultural studies were used to interpret the results. Results: The findings suggest that a Russian text could express a more collective mindset than its English translation, which shows traces of what may appear a more personal/subjective focus. The study highlights the role of deep culture in discursive practices and demonstrates the relevance and effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach to translation studies. Conclusion: The study confirms the fact that manifestation of lingua-cultural identity can be observed at all levels of language, as well as in communicative strategies, and discursive practices. The task of how to accurately render these nuances in translation is a taxing one that requires a comprehensive understanding of the role of deep culture in discursive practices.

Aim: The present study aims to investigate the discursive practice and rhetoric of hope in higher and lower-sharing people. Method: participants comprised 17 mothers married for 10 to 25 years with at least two children selected through purposive sampling. The present research was conducted with a qualitative approach and an interpretive paradigm. In-depth interviews were used to collect data and data analysis was done using discursive analysis. In order to discourse analyze in the field of discursive psychology, the discursive practice and rhetoric of the hope discourse and sharing were investigated. Findings: Higher-sharing participants enjoyed a wider discourse scope and higher dynamic and active relationships. They cared about the family environment peace, the harmony of spouses in their life route, raising children, and providing a suitable environment for their development, and used rhetoric that were harmonious and appropriate to the content in their words and behavior. Conclusion: Higher-sharing participants enjoyed a more hopeful rhetoric than the lower-sharing participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The issue of the semantic, pragmatic and axiological specifics of cybersecurity discursive practices as it is displayed in the genres of media and online communication is considered. The novelty of the work lies in the application of the corpus linguistics methodology to the study of discourse, understood as a language-mediated social practice. The relevance of the work is due to the interest of linguistics in the study of discursive practices that shape a new social reality formed as a result of the Russian language functioning. By using the methods of corpus linguistics, the cognitive-semantic structure of discursive thesaurus, which comprise a new layer of lexical units, has been reconstructed, thematic groups of lexical units have been identified and their distribution in various genres of cybersecurity discourse has been established. It has been found that along with the terminology focused on the transfer of operational, practical knowledge about safe online practices, the texts in the corpus regularly employ lexical units with military and aggressive semantics, which indicates the contradiction between the goals of the discourse aimed at forming a positive attitude towards digital technologies, and language means employed to achieve them. It is shown that due to regular occurrence of neutral lexical units in negatively colored contexts, they develop negative evaluative connotations, which also contributes to the formation of users’ distrust of new technologies, enhances the feeling of risk, and generates anxiety and concern.

The research paradigm of 21st century linguistics links the study of discourse with the use of language as a public practice. The subject of the study is linguistic features of different levels, characterizing the phenomenon of cancel culture. The new discourse practice or speech reality functions thanks to the media and the Internet in various areas of modern speech — in political and business communication, in professional and everyday life. The purpose of the study is to consider cancel culture as a linguistic object that reflects the speech life of modern society. The relevance of the study is determined by a modern request for regulation and control of speech behavior in the public sphere within the framework of constructive criticism. The article implements the following research tasks: to describe the linguistic essence of the cancel culture and characterize the latter as a phenomenon characteristic of the communicative behavior of representatives of the linguocultural community. The linguistic method of discourse analysis is used as the main tool for analyzing texts with functioning examples of lexical units representing the cancellation action, which makes it possible to identify features of the communication and evaluation activities of speakers. As a result, new language facts in the system of linguistic coordinates are localized and a possible vector for the study of aggressive communication in the language-environment category is determined. It allows for an expansion of the field of scientific understanding of the modern speech environment. The author concludes that the cancel culture as a new discourse practice has a thematic and semiotic dominant in the form of destructive criticism. Research of new discourse practice on the identified attractors of criticism and aggressive communication is set as a research perspective.

To contribute to the history of linguistics in Argentina, we are interested in studying the figure of María Beatriz Fontanella (1939-1995), who, throughout the last third of the 20th century, anchored her professional activity at the Universidad Nacional del Sur, but whose prolific work had national and international repercussions. With the aim of exploring how Fontanella positioned herself within the disciplinary field in our country, we focus on her discursive practice as a contextualized social action (Barton y Hamilton 1998). To do this, we analyzed a writing by the author from 1968 from three perspectives: the description of the space of production and circulation of the text; biographical data that are significant for the construction of her role as a member of the disciplinary field (Koerner 2007), and the rhetorical-discursive configuration of the text (Gross 1996), focused on salient aspects of the experiential and interpersonal metafunctions (Halliday & Matthiessen 1994). The analysis reveals the existence of two rhetorics that converge towards a dual purpose: on the one hand, Fontanella points out a theoretical-methodological gap in the discipline; on the other hand, she positions herself advantageously within the field, legitimizing her occupancy of that vacant space. In contemporary mainland China, writing about Chinese Christian history is no longer a practice reserved for Marxist theorists or highly-trained historians. It is now increasingly open to diverse authors, and recently, both local governments and local history buffs have shown an enthusiasm for producing historical texts linked to Christianity. This article re-examines that recent phenomenon in Nanfeng City, Fujian Province, exploring diverse forms of narratives about Chinese Christian history to uncover both official and unofficial discursive practices. It provides a basis from which to understand the state project of representing the past, where personal memories are mobilized as part of a grander project of historical reconstruction, paving the way to express different visions of the past. While unofficial narratives are emerging to challenge the master narrative of the state, this paper argues that official and popular historical accounts are not in any simple opposition to one another, often mingling together in a complex relationship. Neste artigo discutimos o funcionamento discursivo implicado na edição da Súmula 610-STF, que, embora não tenha efeito vinculante, tem regido as decisões nos diferentes tribunais brasileiros desde então. Na continuidade de uma discussão sobre a inadequação de seu conteúdo normativo, proposta por Moreira et al. (2019), neste artigo nos perguntamos sobre as condições de enunciabilidade que garantiram o seu surgimento e a sua consolidação. Para tanto, realizamos a análise da cena enunciativa implicada nos/pelos textos que fundamentam os cinco Habeas Corpus que consubstanciam a edição da Súmula epigrafada, com base em uma abordagem discursivo-ergológica. Questionando as enunciações no contexto de trabalho jurídico penal, encontramos uma cena enunciativa em que se confrontam os valores de dois bens jurídicos: a vida e o patrimônio. O funcionamento discursivo que estabelece este confronto aponta para um traço estruturante do sistema jurídico que, alinhado a racionalidades capitalistas, associa o direito à vida ao direito à propriedade.

New mass media engage the medical community in digital communication and transform professional discourse by expanding the communicative interaction and creating new discursive practices. The paper introduces the discursive specifics of the professional communication of doctors in medical blogs on social networks. The research relied on the methodology of critical discursive analysis. Medical blogs focus on professional and personal self-presentation. The communicative interaction between the doctor and the patient via a medical blog remains within the framework of status-role institutional communication and reproduces the existing order of medical discourse. On-line medical communication produces media texts of various genres of medical, media, marketing, and personality-oriented discourses, forming a hybrid discursive area at the junction of medical discourse and media discourse. The digital mode of professional communication transforms the strategies of medical discourse and creates new ones. New discursive practices blur the boundaries of medical discourse. Internet environment affects the communicative behavior within the medical community.

The role of the addressee in mass media communication is becoming more active, thus restructuring the functional discourse parameters. This change has also affected institutional psychological practice on the radio and in social nets. The sender and the addressee share the same value orientations in their professional interaction and phatic communication. The present research featured the psychological practice in the media discourse that belongs to psychologist M. Labkovskiy and his followers on the radio and Instagram . Based on the communicative-discursive analysis, the authors revealed the communicative models of their interdiscursive interaction. These models shared the same values and focused on attracting and retaining the attention of the audience. As a result, the discourse needs a new genre system, as well as communicative and linguistic tools. The main results of these changes are manifested in the phatic component of communication and in the ways the discourse agents position themselves.

This article examines a case of internet posts discussing social issues affecting men and masculinity. Analysis of 500 posts containing masculine coded language on the subreddit r/unpopularopinion suggests that masculinity, especially when intersected with straightness and whiteness, is discursively constructed in an imagined social hierarchy where the plight of straight white men is invisible. By framing opinions as "unpopular," these posts suggest that while the poster's view may be objectively true, it is disvalued in mainstream discourses. Three key findings emerged from this analysis: First, regardless of the particular social issue discussed, efforts to reduce social inequality were negatively evaluated on average. Second, negative posts were more popular on the site; thus, amplifying the visibility of grievances. Third, masculine coded language is structured on Reddit, such that certain issues are bundled together to generate salient, interlocking themes indicating a robust meaning system. Overall, these findings suggest that criticisms of social equality are embedded within a discourse of threatened masculinity, straightness, and whiteness. This research extends past work on internet discursive practices related to masculinity and gender by showing the pervasiveness and intersectional nature of masculinity threat in digital forms. Based on the findings of the research, various trends in the description of the vocative in different historical periods have been identified, in particular: 1) until the beginning of the 20th, it was unequivocally qualified as an equal member of the inflectional paradigm of the noun, equal to other cases; 2) from the beginning of the 20th century to 1933 was a period of competition between two theories (the vocative is a case the same as others or the vocative is not a true case, but a "special" form in the inflectional paradigm of the noun); 3) the canonization of the "fake case" status theory; 4) from 1991 to the present there has been an unanimity of authors in qualifying the vocative as a case. Comparing the stages of fundamental changes in the scientific definition of the vocative in grammars with defining events in the history of Ukraine provides the basis for discussions about the influence of socio-political factors on the representation of linguistic theories and the codification of the linguistic norms. While reproductive health justice is often assumed to be inherent in reproductive health interventions, the nature of injustices, and the reasons for and mechanisms of concealment, are often unclear. In this article, we draw on an ethnography of priority setting and healthcare practice in eastern Uganda to illuminate these injustices and the mechanisms of concealement. We focus on discursive practices as the mechanisms through which power is activated and navigated, such that health practitioners are able to evade state surveillance and retribution. While language discourses conceal and normalise reproductive health injustices, discursive practices of care and priority setting enable reproductive controls to be navigated in ways that amplify these injustices and create new ones. In interventions, precarious conditions that impact women's reproductive health and living circumstances are often overlooked or concealed. We illustrate the convergence of biopower and necropolitical strategies to illuminate these conditions. Using the concept of reproductive materialism, we show how neoliberalism cultivates particular conditions of everyday life, in which populations are positioned as instruments for pecuniary motives, and normative controls are used to further financial gain. The discourse on the restandardisation of Afrikaans often raises the issue of the negative consequences of a hegemonic standard variety in the Afrikaans classroom and how the school system has been using teaching materials such as textbooks to protect the point of view that the standard language is the only legitimate language. Various educators, researchers, linguists, artists, and language activists have spoken out about how Standard Afrikaans (Standaardafrikaans) alienates learners who are speakers of Cape Afrikaans and how drastic changes to the language form of Standard Afrikaans and language functions of varieties such as Cape Afrikaans are needed so that Afrikaans can serve the entire Afrikaans-speaking community. Yet the school context and textbooks are predominantly underutilised as a source of language legitimation in the course of the current discussion on restandardisation. Bearing in mind Haugen's (1987:637) view that changes to the language form should be implemented by educational institutions, this conceptual article investigates how the inclusion of Cape Afrikaans in textbooks can legitimise this variety and ultimately advance the restandardisation of Afrikaans. First, Odendaal's (2012:125-126) theoretical exposition of the concept of "restandardisation" is discussed. From her definition, the conclusion is made that restandardisation could be a social restitution aimed at democratising Afrikaans by using varieties such as Cape Afrikaans as a source to expand the standard variety. The democratisation of Afrikaans entails that varieties like Cape Afrikaans must be destigmatised by introducing it in authoritative spaces such as the education system. In this way, the prestige of the varieties is increased, and it is established as a legitimate form of Afrikaans. It is argued that textbooks possess discursive qualities that offer productive possibilities to promote the restandardisation of Afrikaans by establishing Cape Afrikaans as a legitimate language form. These discursive qualities of textbooks are explored, as well as how textbooks as linguistic resources bring about legitimation. Textbooks act as a form of discourse because they are presented in a specific language variety and take the form of a series of thematic and ideologically structured communications that circulate between a specific community of communicators. As the production of textbooks is controlled by the dominant groups and institutions (the publishing industry and/or state approval committees), textbooks tend to reflect the ideologies of the dominant group. A textbook therefore functions on the one hand as an instrument that contains knowledge considered legitimate by political authorities and on the other hand it forms part of socialisation processes. One of the primary functions of a discourse (here: in the form of textbooks) is to influence the experiences of the participants in the discursive practice (here: learners who work from the textbook). By using a specific language or language variety in textbooks, textbook users are socialised to regard such a specific language or language variety as the legitimate language, because the legitimate knowledge - as set out in the school curriculum - is presented in that particular language or language variety. Similar to discourse, textbooks are thus not only modelled on social values and traditions, but they also possess the ability to shape social beliefs and values. Fairclough (1995:131) argues that discursive practices - such as compiling and using textbooks - act in socially reproductive and socially transformative ways. Depending on the socio-political circumstances, textbooks have the ability to perpetuate existing social beliefs, or they can transform existing beliefs by exposing users to new knowledge and insights. Furthermore, textbooks also comply with Van Leeuwen's (2007:92) exposition of linguistic resources that bring about legitimation. Textbooks are linguistic resources 1) that are used by persons with institutional authority (educators) 2) during institutionalised social interaction (the teaching-learning process) 3) while containing official and approved knowledge that reflects the values and beliefs of society 4) and at the same time possessing the ability to influence users' scholastic success. This article explores how textbooks can be used as resources to legitimatise Cape Afrikaans. Drawing on Odendaal's (2012:462) restandardisation framework as a theoretical point of departure, this article illustrates how textbooks in the relevant phases can promote the legitimation of Cape Afrikaans and, ultimately, the restandardisation of Afrikaans. Introduction. The struggle for historical truth systematically conducted by the Government makes it essential enough to address the topic of the Great Patriotic War for further insights into actual discursive practices across Soviet regions. Goals. The work aims at identifying certain patterns of discursive practices once instrumental in the shaping of new man through means of Soviet photography and, specifically, the images published by the Khalmg Ünn (Kalm. ‘Kalmyk truth’) newspaper, a key periodical of the Kalmyk ASSR, between 1957 and 1964. Materials and methods. The continuous sampling method has been instrumental in examining over 10.000 photographs published in 1957 to 1964, the analysis having included both local images and ones delivered by the ‘Center’ (TASS) for further publication in the republican media. The research methods employed are the photograph analysis method (at various levels), quantitative methods, and that of extrapolation. Conclusions. The analysis of 1957–1964 Khalmg Ünn photographs as visual evidence of the past reveals that the then ideological techniques did not involve the theme of the Great Patriotic War to the full: despite the latter served a key element in the shaping of common Soviet identity, it was thenceforth closely associated with the drama of Kalmyk Deportation to Siberia. The newspaper’s visual imagery depicts a republic under reconstruction which was allegedly determined by the specific situation to have resulted from that the Deportation had been undertaken and explained by false accusations of treason and collaborationism — during war years. So, the Center was articulating the idea of restoration and revival of the Republic to be perceived by the Kalmyks as a revival of the ethnos, withdrawal of any charges, complete rehabilitation — and this is manifested in all photographs (construction sites, new buildings and facilities), this key discursive practice employed was to meet the sentiments of Kalmyks to have just relieved and arrived in ancestral lands. The combination of true emotions and ideological patterns created a platform for the formation of new Soviet man in the Kalmyk ASSR.

Статья посвящена анализу интернет-мемов и демотиваторов как дискурсивных практик новых медиа, характеризующихся поликодовой структурой и представляющих гибридные образования в семиотическом, дискурсивном и семантическом плане. В процессе исследования выделены основные дискурсообразующие признаки интернет-мемов и демотиваторов, позволяющие говорить о данных дискурсивных практиках как о феноменах современной интернет-коммуникации, в структуре которых преобладает имплицитная вербально-визуальная информация, с помощью которой передаются и интерпретируются знания об окружающем мире в соответствии с коммуникативными установками автора и реципиента. Проведенный анализ показал, что семантика интернет-мемов и демотиваторов направлена на уплотнение контекстуальных связей, поскольку их компоненты характеризуются полидискурсивностью, гипертекстуальностью, а также фольклорной направленностью. Дана характеристика автосемантических и синсемантических отношений, в которые вступают вербальный и невербальный компоненты интернет-мемов и демотиваторов. Отмечена роль пресуппозиции, необходимая для адекватного декодирования смыслов, заложенных в интернет-мемах и демотиваторах.

the paper discusses the use of irony in modern public diplomatic discourse. The aim of the study is to describe the functions of irony in diplomatic communication and to show how ironic comments affect communication at the international level. The research is based on the speeches by Russian diplomats and official representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, as well as their publications and comments in social networks. Diplomatic discourse is carried out on the basis of diplomatic protocol and, ideally, should follow the requirements of explicitness, argumentativeness, and minimal emotionality. At the same time, an important property of this sphere of communication is competitiveness (agonality), which is associated with defending the interests of the state on the international level and manifests itself in the explicit competition of various points of view. The study suggests that in modern diplomatic discourse, there are frequent cases of deviations from the diplomatic protocol, when speakers use irony as a way of expressing an implicit critical assessment. Irony accompanies explicit critical assessments of events or actions of diplomats of other states and, as a rule, appears where there is an aggravation of international relations. Tactics used by the speakers to create irony make it easy for the addressee to recognize it. Since the purpose of ironic comments is to show the inconsistency of the opponents’ position, irony allows the speaker not only to express critical assessment of their statements or actions, but also to demonstrate the superiority of the stated point of view on events. Alternatively, it can be a sign of disappointment due to a diplomatic loss. In the context of intercultural communication at the state level, irony violates not only the requirements of diplomatic protocol, but also the principle of politeness, so it can be viewed as an instrument of confrontational agonality, which does not imply a constructive dialogue.

In this article, we analyze how the elderly are positioned in the discourse as an object of practice that is manifested in the institutional space of the nursing home São Vicente de Paulo, in Jacarezinho, PR. To do so, we start with a discussion about discursive practice - reference, object, and associative domain - and the precariousness of elderly people living in nursing homes, relating them to the way the body is inscribed in a mechanism that manages death by the government, exercised over the vulnerability implied in that space. The enunciative series was extracted from official documents, medical records, and interviews with those responsible for the institution. After that, these records were submitted to an archaeogenealogical analysis regarding the government and the objectification in exercise inside this institution. We first considered that vulnerable old age is an emblematic statement of this practice and, as such, allows us to identify a regularity around the incapacity, invisibility, and precariousness of aged bodies on which the regulation of life and the administration of death operate. This article analyzes the winning films at Indonesia's 2019 Police Movie Festival "Together We Are Strong." This film festival was organized by the Public Relations of the Indonesian National Police, which is allegedly one of the police's efforts to control the media. We argue that the festival became the vehicle for police to build positive images since the media published some violent cases perpetrated by the police against civilians; or negative sentiment toward the police because several police officers held strategic positions in government. In order to find out the positive image raised by the police, we analyze the police figures in these film festival winners. The analyses include the basic ideas, characters, setting, iconography, and narrative events of the police figures. The results show that the film festival winners portrayed police as patriotic heroes who defend the country from crimes that threaten the nation's integrity through genre analysis. According to the discursive practice in film, police's images as patriotic heroes become an attempt by the police to perform their power in socio-political life, especially in Indonesia. This research aims to answer the problems of meaning, theological values, philosophical values, and discursive practices in the context of the ritual mocera tasi with qualitative research methods. This research uses the cultural studies approach. Locus of the research included Lampenai Village and Bawalipu Village, Wotu District, East Luwu Regency. Primary data were collected by observations, interviews, and written documents from ritual practitioners. Primary data were collected by literature sources related to research. Resource persons were research informants. Informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were processed by identification, categorization, and classification stages. Data were analyzed by reduction, display, interpretation, inference, and verification process. The results showed that knowledge was gained by the contestation of meanings around the mocera tasi ritual. Mocera tasi as a spirit of the life of ethnic Wotu people has meaning based on theological and philosophical values. Theological values educate the Wotu community to give thanks to the Creator and give alms for all the blessings that were obtained. Philosophical values teach the emotional soul between humans and nature and fellow creatures created by Allah. The study implied that offending the mocera tasi ritual means touching on the knowledge and beliefs of the ritual participants. Therefore, changing or stereotyping of the mocera tasi ritual will touch on the aspects of the knowledge and beliefs of the Wotu ethnic community. يهدف هذا البحث إلى الإجابة على مشاكل المعنى والقيم اللاهوتية والقيم الفلسفية والممارسات الاستطرادية في سياق موﭼيرا تاسى مع أساليب البحث النوعي. واستخدم البحث منهج الدراسات الثقافية. تضمن محور البحث قرية لامبيناي وقرية باواليبو، منطقة ووتو، منطقة لوو الشرقية. وتم جمع البيانات الأولية عن طريق الملاحظات والمقابلات والوثائق المكتوبة من ممارسي الطقوس. تم جمع البيانات الأولية من خلال مصادر الأدب المتعلقة بالبحث. كان الأشخاص المرجعيون مخبرين للبحوث. وتم اختيار المخبرين بإستخدام تقنية أخذ العينات هادفة. تمت معالجة البيانات عن طريق مراحل التحديد والتصنيف والتصنيف. تم تحليل البيانات عن طريق الاختزال والعرض والتفسير والاستدلال وعملية التحقق. أظهرت النتائج أن المعرفة اكتسبت من خلال الطعن في المعاني حول طقوس موﭼيرا تاسى كروح لحياة شعب ووتو العرقي له معنى قائم على القيم اللاهوتية والفلسفية. القيم اللاهوتية تثقف مجتمع ووتو لتقديم الشكر للخالق وإعطاء الصدقات لجميع النعم التي تم الحصول عليها. القيم الفلسفية تعلم الروح العاطفية بين البشر والطبيعة والمخلوقات التي خلقها الله. أشارت الدراسة إلى أن الإساءة إلى طقوس موكيرا تاسي تعني لمس معارف ومعتقدات المشاركين في الطقوس. لذلك، فإن تغيير أو تنميط طقوس الموزيرا سوف يتطرق إلى جوانب المعرفة والمعتقدات الخاصة بمجتمع ووتو العرقي Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab masalah makna, nilai-nilai teologis, filosofis, dan praktik diskursif dalam konteks ritual mocera tasi dengan metode penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi budaya. Lokasi penelitian meliputi Desa Lampenai dan Desa Bawalipu, Kecamatan Wotu, Kabupaten Luwu Timur. Data primer dikumpulkan dengan observasi, wawancara, dan dokumen tertulis dari praktisi ritual. Data primer dikumpulkan oleh sumber literatur yang terkait dengan penelitian. Narasumber adalah informan penelitian. Informan dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data diproses oleh tahap identifikasi, kategorisasi, dan klasifikasi. Data dianalisis dengan reduksi, tampilan, interpretasi, inferensi, dan proses verifikasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan diperoleh dengan kontestasi makna di sekitar ritual mocera tasi. Mocera tasi sebagai ruh kehidupan etnis Wotu memiliki makna berdasarkan nilai-nilai teologis dan filosofis. Nilai-nilai teologis mendidik komunitas Wotu untuk bersyukur kepada Sang Pencipta dan memberikan sedekah untuk semua berkat yang diperoleh. Nilai-nilai filosofis mengajarkan jiwa emosional antara manusia dan alam dan sesama makhluk yang diciptakan oleh Allah. Studi ini menyiratkan bahwa menyinggung ritual mocera tasi berarti menyentuh pengetahuan dan kepercayaan para peserta ritual. Karena itu, perubahan atau stereotip ritual mocera tasi akan menyentuh aspek pengetahuan dan kepercayaan komunitas etnis Wotu.

Abstract The present article investigates the discursive encounter of the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education against the outbreak of Coronavirus and compares this ministry’s discursive strategies with those of other countries in dealing with the virus. To achieve this, all the news articles published in the "Coronavirus News" section in the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education website since the outbreak of the Virus in Iran from February 20, 2020, to November 20, 2020, which amounts to more than 1700 cases, have been analyzed to determine the ideologically-loaded news headlines. All the news headlines with the ideological concepts, which constitute a total number of 75 news articles, were coded based on Strauss and Corbin’s (1994) Grounded theory. The results implied that with the Coronavirus peak in the country in the four months leading up to November, the use of religious-revolutionary concepts by the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education had increased significantly. Based on Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis (1989), it is revealed that the usage of religious-revolutionary discourse by Iranian ministry and recalling the Iran-Iraq war bears the “experiential value” applied in the ideological use of slogans at the "text" level. Recalling the successful narratives of the war discourse can help to gain the support of a nation in defeating the epidemic. Relying on their civilizational and cultural reserves, different countries try to solve the social turmoil with solutions appropriate to their indigenous culture. Meanwhile, in today’s world, the role of national identity and social behavior is indispensable in dealing with unpredictable challenges. By highlighting the elements of cultural and national identities and social values as solid support, different countries worldwide encourage their nations to unite in the struggle against suffering. The elements of the national identity of each nation and the values that societies trust are reflected in the body of specific historical events. The frequent narration of these historical and cultural events and occasions by the dominant entities leads to the acceptance and internalization of the identity and values emanating from them. The critical historical events representing the most obvious and deepest values of a nation are not merely natural, but they are socially and ideologically motivated and play an undeniable role in shaping the nation's understanding of itself and its capabilities. Frequent references to these discursive and historical events and the attempt to link these events with the upcoming events of the present age are especially evident in Coronavirus. The present article seeks to analyze the discursive performance of the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education against the virus and show what identifying and unifying narratives this ministry uses to ask the nation to unite against the Coronavirus. Materials and Methods In order to determine the discursive patterns of the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical education against the virus, the "Coronavirus news" section in the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education website was studied. All the published news about the Coronavirus since the outbreak of the virus in the country from February 20, 2020, to November 20, 2020, which was over 1700 cases, were examined to find out ideologically-loaded news headlines. A total number of 75 ideologically-loaded news headlines were coded based on Strauss and Corbin’s (1994) Grounded theory. The key concepts in each news article were extracted several times through the three coding stages. Later, they were analyzed based on Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis (1989). The basic concepts in all 75 news items published in the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education website included topics such as "Martyrdom and Sacrifice," "Jihad," "Recourse to Divine Relief," "Heavenly characters of Medical Staff," and "Empathy." Discussion of Results and Conclusions The results indicated that the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education used religious discourse and hinted at the historical event of the Iran-Iraq war to communicate with the nation and gain their support against the pandemic. Slogans stated by the spokeswoman for the Iran Ministry of Health Education, such as "We will defeat Corona with the help of God," implied the religious discourse intertwined with scientific discourse in Iran. The study also proved that the frequency of ideologically-loaded news headlines was significantly increased at certain times when there was an increase in the number of Coronavirus victims. The Ministry of Health and Medical Education aimed to resurrect and continue the fight against the Coronavirus by reviving the established national values while reviving the nation's historical memory by victorious historical events. The ideological concepts called the rules of discourse based on Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis were well addressed in the news headlines of the Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education website.

The authors consider identity as a conditional discursive construct, the result of subjects of discourse identifications and offer their own methodology for its analysis. It is shown that regional identity can be represented in the form of a model based on spatial and temporal identifications that specify the coordinate system of reality in which there are residents of the region in question. The concept of space-time is complemented by a set of diverse thematic identifications, including economic, political, cultural, ethnic, religious, linguistic, etc. For the first time in the framework of the socio-constructionist paradigm, a discursive model of the regional identity of the inhabitants of Tatarstan is constructed in the article. The empirical material of the study is the corpus of texts of Tatarstan media for 2017-2019. It is shown that the spatial identification of Tatarstan people includes the practice of selecting, nominating and describing significant geographical objects, the practice of constructing relations of Tatarstan with other geographical objects. Particular attention is paid to the practice of constructing the capital status of a regional center, as well as the relationship of spatial and political identifications. Analyzing the practices of ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural identification, the authors come to the conclusion that the identity of the Tatarstan people is ethnocentric: despite the declared multinationality and multi-confessionality of the region, Tatars as an ethnic group, Tatar language, Tatar culture and Islam as a traditional religion of the Tatars are of particular importance.

Recent research on growth machines, in a prominent theme, has focused on how mobilized discourses promote urban redevelopment projects. Pushed to the margins, in this work, has been the issue of how alternative growth visions and voices are silenced or muffled. This article examines the notion of “silencing” in urban growth discourses. Silencing, it is argued, should not be understood as censorship but rather as attempts by growth machines to relativize the importance of critical and dissent voices in redevelopment projects. We believe that to understand how redevelopment projects operate and transform (urban) spaces, such rhetorical peripherialization is as important as pro-growth discourses. In developing this argument, the article focuses on the case study of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) on Chicago's Southeast Side. An OPC growth machine consisting of the Obama Foundation, the city mayor, the University of Chicago, and a coalition of local business and community organizations practices this simultaneity of offering their voice and undercutting alternative voices in adroit ways. Race, it is argued, is at the center of this systematic suppression. The OPC development provides an important example of how current redevelopment in cities across the global west currently proceeds.

The paper looks into the emergence of terms and neologisms related to COVID-19 outbreak, which are treated as lexical quantors (LQs). A LQ, as a linguistic nominative unit, reflects the amount of language knowledge (LK) represented in a certain segment of language worldview (LWV). It is represented by a word or a phrase, which constitutes some quantum of information to designate a certain segment of LWV. It has a systemic character and is reflected in the semantics of a linguistic unit. This research is aimed at exploring COVID-19 lexical quantors both in terminological and general vocabulary aspects and it defines the major language concepts for special purposes (LSP). It is characterized by the word formation means expressing all types of LK with the prevalence of a denotative special meaning. General COVID-19 lexical units employ all word formation means to render both denotative and connotative components of LQs meanings revealing also social, cultural, and axiological aspects of LK. The boundary between COVID-19 terminology and general lexical units is quite blurred when the transition from one layer of vocabulary to another is observed. Word formation is viewed as the process of constructing LQs in terms of aggregated, condensed and modified knowledge means. In conclusion, the informative potential realization of LQ is manifested in various discursive practices, namely: media, politics, and public service announcements (PSA) that embrace both linguistic and socio-cultural characteristics of communication.
