We present PDFCHEM, a new numerical method able to compute the photodissociation region (PDR) chemistry of large-scale inhomogeneous ISM regions using probability distributions of physical parameters as an input. We distinguish between two visual extinctions, namely the ‘effective’ (AV,eff) referring to the local extinction and the ‘observed’ (AV,obs) referring to the extinction taken from observations. Using 1,200 pre-calculated PDR simulations, we apply PDFCHEM to two hypothetical AV,obs−PDFs, representing a diffuse region and a Giant Molecular Cloud. PDFchem is fast and can replace the computationally expensive hydrodynamical models in understanding the chemistry of the ISM in different environments, including at low metallicities and high cosmic-ray ionization rates.

Context. Transition disks are protoplanetary disks with dust-depleted cavities, possibly indicating substantial clearing of their dust content by a massive companion. For several known transition disks, dark regions interpreted as shadows have been observed in scattered light imaging and are hypothesized to originate from misalignments between distinct regions of the disk. Aims. We aim to investigate the presence of misalignments in transition disks. We study the inner disk (12CO and 13CO molecular line archival data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to derive the orientation of the outer disk regions (>10 au). Methods. We fit simple parametric models to the visibilities and closure phases of the GRAVITY data to derive the inclination and position angle of the inner disks. The outer disk geometries were derived from Keplerian fits to the ALMA velocity maps and compared to the inner disk constraints. We also predicted the locations of expected shadows for significantly misaligned systems. Results. Our analysis reveals six disks to exhibit significant misalignments between their inner and outer disk structures. The predicted shadow positions agree well with the scattered light images of HD 100453 and HD 142527, and we find supporting evidence for a shadow in the south of the disk around CQ Tau. In the other three targets for which we infer significantly misaligned disks, V1247 Ori, V1366 Ori, and RY Lup, we do not see any evident sign of shadows in the scattered light images. The scattered light shadows observed in DoAr 44, HD 135344 B, and HD 139614 are consistent with our observations, yet the underlying morphology is likely too complex to be described properly by our models and the accuracy achieved by our observations. Conclusions. The combination of near infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations allows us to assess the geometries of the innermost disk regions and those of the outer disk. Whereas we can derive precise constraints on the potential shadow positions for well-resolved inner disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars, the large statistical uncertainties for the marginally resolved inner disks around the T Tauri stars of our sample make it difficult to extract conclusive constraints for the presence of shadows in these systems.

[Abridged] Far-infrared observations with Herschel revealed a surprisingly low abundance of cold-water reservoirs in protoplanetary discs. On the other hand, a handful of discs show emission of hot water transitions excited at temperatures above a few hundred Kelvin. In particular, the protoplanetary discs around the Herbig Ae stars HD 100546 and HD 163296 show opposite trends in terms of cold versus hot water emission: in the first case, the ground-state transitions are detected and the high-J lines are undetected, while the trend is opposite in HD 163296. We performed a spectral analysis using the thermo-chemical model DALI. We find that HD 163296 is characterised by a water-rich (abundance $\gtrsim 10^{-5}$) hot inner disc (within the snowline) and a water-poor ($< 10^{-10}$) outer disc: the relative abundance may be due to the thermal desorption of icy grains that have migrated inward. Remarkably, the size of the H$_2$O emitting region corresponds to a narrow dust gap visible in the millimeter continuum at $r=10\,$au with ALMA. The low-J lines detected in HD 100546 instead imply an abundance of a few $10^{-9}$ in the cold outer disc ($> 40$ au). The emitting region of the cold H$_2$O transitions is spatially coincident with that of the H$_2$O ice previously seen in the near-infrared. Notably, millimetre observations with ALMA reveal the presence of a large dust gap between nearly 40 and 150 au, likely opened by a massive embedded protoplanet. In both discs, we find that the warm molecular layer in the outer region (beyond the snow line) is highly depleted of water molecules, implying an oxygen-poor chemical composition of the gas. We speculate that gas-phase oxygen in the outer disc is readily depleted and its distribution in the disc is tightly coupled to the dynamics of the dust grains., Accepted for publication on A&A

[Abridged] Planet formation is expected to be enhanced around snowlines in protoplanetary disks, in particular around the water snowline. However, the close proximity of the water snowline to the host star and water in the Earth's atmosphere makes a direct detection of the water snowline in protoplanetary disks challenging. Following earlier work on protostellar envelopes, the aim of this research is to investigate the validity of HCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$, as tracers of the water snowline in protoplanetary disks, as HCO$^+$ is destroyed by gas-phase water. Two small chemical networks are used to predict the HCO$^+$ abundance in a typical Herbig Ae disk. Subsequently, the corresponding emission profiles are modelled for H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ $J=2-1$, which provides the best balance between brightness and optical depth effects of the continuum emission. The HCO$^+$ abundance jumps by two orders of magnitude just outside the water snowline at 4.5 AU. We find that the emission of H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$ is ring-shaped due to three effects: destruction of HCO$^+$ by gas-phase water, continuum optical depth, and molecular excitation effects. The presence of gas-phase water causes an additional drop of only $\sim$13% and 24% in the center of the disk, for H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and HCO$^+$, respectively. For the much more luminous outbursting source V883Ori, our models predict that the effect of dust and excitation are not limiting if the snowline is located outside $\sim$40 AU. Our analysis of ALMA observations of HCO$^+$ $J=3-2$ is consistent with the water snowline located around 100 AU. The HCO$^+$ abundance drops steeply around the water snowline, but dust and excitation can conceal the drop in HCO$^+$ emission due to the water snowline. Therefore, locating the water snowline with HCO$^+$ in Herbig disks is very difficult, but it is possible for outbursting sources like V883Ori., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 13 pages, 11 figures + appendices

Combining adaptive optics and interferometric observations results in a considerable contrast gain compared to single-telescope, extreme AO systems. Taking advantage of this, the ExoGRAVITY project is a survey of known young giant exoplanets located in the range of 0.1'' to 2'' from their stars. The observations provide astrometric data of unprecedented accuracy, being crucial for refining the orbital parameters of planets and illuminating their dynamical histories. Furthermore, GRAVITY will measure non-Keplerian perturbations due to planet-planet interactions in multi-planet systems and measure dynamical masses. Over time, repetitive observations of the exoplanets at medium resolution ($R=500$) will provide a catalogue of K-band spectra of unprecedented quality, for a number of exoplanets. The K-band has the unique properties that it contains many molecular signatures (CO, H$_2$O, CH$_4$, CO$_2$). This allows constraining precisely surface gravity, metallicity, and temperature, if used in conjunction with self-consistent models like Exo-REM. Further, we will use the parameter-retrieval algorithm petitRADTRANS to constrain the C/O ratio of the planets. The emergence of life on Earth may have its origin in organic molecules formed in the interstellar medium. Molecules with amide and isocyanate groups resemble structures found in peptides and nucleobases and are necessary for their formation. Their formation is expected to take place in the solid state, on icy dust grains, and is studied here by far-UV irradiating a CH4:HNCO mixture at 20 K in the laboratory. Reaction products are detected by means of infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption - mass spectrometry. Various simple amides and isocyanates are formed, showing the importance of ice chemistry for their interstellar formation. Constrained by experimental conditions, a reaction network is derived, showing possible formation pathways of these species under interstellar conditions.

The identification of complex organic molecules, COMs, in inter- and circumstellar gas phase environments is steadily increasing. The formation of such COMs takes largely place on the icy dust grains, as has been shown in recent laboratory studies. Until now solid state features of smaller molecular species have been directly identified in these environments. The presented work on acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) in different astronomically relevant ice environments and for temperatures in the range 15 to 160 Kelvin, provides the necessary tools to guide or interpret astronomical observations, specifically for upcoming James Webb Space Telescope observations.

We present some new studies of the absolute photodissociation cross sections of astrophysically-relevant diatomic radicals.

Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) can be formed on icy dusty grains in molecular clouds and protoplanetary disks. The number of astronomical detections of solid COMs, however, is very limited. With the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) this should change, but in order to identify solid state features of COMs, accurate laboratory data are needed. Here we present high resolution (0.5 cm–1) infrared ice spectra of acetone (C3H6O) and methyl formate (HCOOCH3), two molecules already identified in astronomical gas phase surveys, whose interstellar synthesis is expected to follow solid state pathways.

The IAU Strategic Plan for 2020-2030 presents an overview of all of the activities of the IAU along with priorities, key goals, mandates, and specific actions. Here future plans and goals are outlined for the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD).

The evolution of millimeter-sized dust in a protoplanetary disk is one of the key observable constrains on the formation of planets. In recent years, ALMA surveys of disks in nearby star-forming regions have shown a dependence of the disk mass distribution on cloud properties and environmental factors. Due to the relatively small number of regions for which these statistics are available, several key questions have so far been out of reach for observers: do disk masses vary across clouds, or are they constant? How far does the influence of massive young stars reach in different environments? How do the masses of Class II-disks compare to those of embedded objects? We present new results from the Survey of Orion Disks with ALMA (SODA), based on observations of 882 disks in the southern part of the Orion A molecular cloud. This flux-limited survey is the largest of its kind so far, and spans a large area on the sky with multiple young groups and clusters, as shown in Figure 1. We find that disk properties across the cloud are remarkably uniform, between clusters and between regions of different stellar density. However, the presence of B-stars is significant.IntroductionDifferent ALMA surveys in individual star forming regions have significantly improved our understanding of the evolution of protoplanetary disks in recent times. In particular, most of the nearby low-mass star-forming regions (SFRs) have now been observed at mm-wavelengths, as well as several SFRs hosting massive stars (e.g., Ansdell et al. 2016, Pascucci et al. 2016, Eisner et al. 2018, van Terwisga et al. 2020). These studies have provided key insight in how circumstellar matter evolves as planetary systems take shape. Observations so far have shown that disks of all masses evolve rapidy within the first few Myr of their existence (Tychoniec et al. 2020). In addition to these age effects, the disk mass distribution of populations of disks in strongly irradiated environments has also been shown to be subject to external photoevaporation. Disks decrease in mass in stronger radiation fields in regions like σ Ori and the Trapezium (Ansdell et al. 2017, Mann et al. 2014, Eisner et al. 2018), demonstrating the direct impact of extreme environments on disk evolution. Model predictions (frome.g. the FRIED grid, by Haworth et al. 2018) and observations of individual disks in low-mass SFRs have shown that even in an environment like Taurus, where the UV radiation is a factor 1000 weaker than in the Trapezium, half of the disks undergo significant mass loss. A key problem is that even with the current state-of-the-art data, the number of different star-forming regions sampled is quite small. Additionally, even in regions where complete surveys of the Class II population exist, like Lupus, stars exist in a range of environmental conditions. Our survey of Orion A, the largest of its kind so far, covers large numbers of disks in a wide variety of environments, allowing us to link disk properties to their enviroment more firmly than before. Data reductionOur observations cover a large number of sources at low (1.4'') resolution in ALMA Band 6. This resolution is low compared to the expected disk structure. This meant we could use a high-performance computing cluster to reduce and image the data in a fraction of the time it would otherwise take, simulateously guaranteeing consistent and reproducible results.Results Figure 2: Disk mass distribution in the SODA sample, compared to several other well-studied nearby star-forming regions. By converting disk fluxes to masses we can compare the properties of the Orion A disks sample, both within different regions of Orion A, and between Orion A and other clouds, like Lupus and Taurus, which have been surveyed previously. As Figure 2 shows, the large number of disks in our sample allows us to determine the disk mass distribution much more accurately than previously possible. However, the large sample size also enables us to compare average disk masses between regions in Orion A, as shown in Figure 3, which shows that there are only small differences in average disk masses between areas of vastly different surface densities, even across the length of the cloud, and emphasizes the remarkable similarity between disks in Orion, Taurus, and Lupus. However, the presence of nearby B-stars is relevant for disk masses, out to scales of several parsecs, a parameter range that it was not previously possible to probe. Complex organic molecules (COMs) have been detected in the gas-phase in cold and lightless molecular cores. Recent solid-state laboratory experiments have provided strong evidence that COMs can be formed on icy grains through 'non-energetic' processes. In this contribution, we show that propanal and 1-propanol can be formed in this way at the low temperature of 10 K. Propanal has already been detected in space. 1-propanol is an astrobiologically relevant molecule, as it is a primary alcohol, and has not been astronomically detected. Propanal is the major product formed in the C2H2 + CO + H experiment, and 1-propanol is detected in the subsequent propanal + H experiment. The results are published in Qasim et al. (2019c). Exoplanet science is one of the most thriving fields of modern astrophysics. A major goal is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small, terrestrial exoplanets in order to search for signatures in their atmospheres that indicate biological activity, assess their ability to provide conditions for life as we know it, and investigate their expected atmospheric diversity. None of the currently adopted projects or missions, from ground or in space, can address these goals. In this White Paper we argue that a large space-based mission designed to detect and investigate thermal emission spectra of terrestrial exoplanets in the MIR wavelength range provides unique scientific potential to address these goals and surpasses the capabilities of other approaches. While NASA might be focusing on large missions that aim to detect terrestrial planets in reflected light, ESA has the opportunity to take leadership and spearhead the development of a large MIR exoplanet mission within the scope of the "Voyage 2050" long-term plan establishing Europe at the forefront of exoplanet science for decades to come. Given the ambitious science goals of such a mission, additional international partners might be interested in participating and contributing to a roadmap that, in the long run, leads to a successful implementation. A new, dedicated development program funded by ESA to help reduce development and implementation cost and further push some of the required key technologies would be a first important step in this direction. Ultimately, a large MIR exoplanet imaging mission will be needed to help answer one of mankind's most fundamental questions: "How unique is our Earth?"

The angular resolution of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the excellent sensitivity of GRAVITY have led to the first detection of spatially resolved kinematics of high velocity atomic gas near an accreting super- massive black hole, revealing rotation on sub-parsec scales in the quasar 3C 273 at a distance of 550 Mpc. The observations can be explained as the result of circular orbits in a thick disc configuration around a 300 million solar mass black hole. Within an ongoing Large Programme, this capability will be used to study the kinematics of atomic gas and its relation to hot dust in a sample of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. We will measure a new radius-luminosity relation from spatially resolved data and test the current methods used to measure black hole mass in large surveys., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 20-24, December 2019.

The role of H2 in forming interstellar complex organics is still not clear due to the high activation energies required for “non-energetic” association reactions. In this work, we investigated the potential contribution of H2 to the hydrogenated species (HnNCO) formation on dust grains when the “energetic” processing is involved. The goal is to test whether an additional hydrogenation pathway is possible upon UV irradiation of a CO:H2 ice mixture. It is proposed that the electronically excited carbon monoxide (CO*) induced by UV-photons can react with a ground-state H2 to form HCO, ultimately enhancing the production of COMs in ice mantle.

Protoplanetary disks with cavities in their dust distribution, also named transitional disks, are expected to be in the middle of active evolution and possibly planet formation. In recent years, millimeter-dust rings observed by ALMA have been suggested to have their origin in dust traps, caused by pressure bumps. One of the ways to generate these is by the presence of planets, which lower the gas density along their orbit and create pressure bumps at the edge. We present spatially resolved ALMA Cycle 0 and Cycle 1 observations of CO and CO isotopologues of several famous transitional disks. Gas is found to be present inside the dust cavities, but at a reduced level compared with the gas surface density profile of the outer disk. The dust and gas emission are quantified using the physical-chemical modeling code DALI. In the majority of these disks we find clear evidence for a drop in gas density of at least a factor of 10 inside the cavity, whereas the dust density drops by at least a factor 1000. The CO isotopologue observations reveal that the gas cavities are significantly smaller than the dust cavities. These gas structures suggest clearing by one or more planetary-mass companions.

Molecular oxygen, O$_2$, was recently detected in comet 67P by the ROSINA instrument on board the Rosetta spacecraft with a surprisingly high abundance of 4 % relative to H$_2$O, making O$_2$ the fourth most abundant in comet 67P. Other volatile species with similar volatility, such as molecular nitrogen N$_2$, were also detected by Rosetta, but with much lower abundances and much weaker correlations with water. Here, we investigate the chemical and physical origin of O$_2$ and other volatile species using the new constraints provided by Rosetta. We follow the chemical evolution during star formation with state-of-the-art astrochemical models applied to dynamical physical models by considering three origins: i) in dark clouds, ii) during forming protostellar disks, and iii) during luminosity outbursts in disks. Connecting the observed composition of exoplanets to their formation sites often involves comparing the atmospheric C/O ratio to a disk midplane model with a fixed chemical composition. In this scenario chemistry during the planet formation era is not considered. However, kinetic chemical evolution during the lifetime of the gaseous disk can change the relative abundances of volatile species, thus altering the C/O ratios of planetary building blocks. In our chemical evolition models we utilize a large network of gas-phase, grain-surface and gas-grain interaction reactions, thus providing a comprehensive treatment of chemistry. The results show that, if sufficient ionisation is present, then chemistry does alter the C/O ratios of gas and ice during the epoch of planet(esimal) formation. This modifies the picture of C/O ratios in disk midplanes defined simply by volatile ice lines in a midplane of fixed chemical composition. Chemical evolution thus needs to be addressed when predicting the makeup of planets and their atmospheres.

The chemical evolution of a star- and planet-forming system begins in the prestellar phase and proceeds across the subsequent evolutionary phases. The chemical trail from cores to protoplanetary disks to planetary embryos can be studied by comparing distant young protostars and comets in our Solar System. One particularly chemically rich system that is thought to be analogous to our own is the low-mass IRAS 16293-2422. ALMA-PILS observations have made the study of chemistry on the disk scales (< 100 AU) of this system possible. Under the assumption that comets are pristine tracers of the outer parts of the innate protosolar disk, it is possible to compare the composition of our infant Solar System to that of IRAS 16293-2422. The Rosetta mission has yielded a wealth of unique in situ measurements on comet 67P/C-G, making it the best probe to date. Herein, the initial comparisons in terms of the chemical composition and isotopic ratios are summarized. This paper provides a brief overview of the journey of molecules through the Cosmos, from local diffuse interstellar clouds and PDRs to distant galaxies, and from cold dark clouds to hot star-forming cores, protoplanetary disks, planetesimals and exoplanets. Recent developments in each area are sketched and the importance of connecting astronomy with chemistry and other disciplines is emphasized. Recently the ROSINA mass spectrometer suite on board the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft discovered an abundant amount of molecular oxygen, O2, in the coma of Jupiter family comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko of O2/H2O = 3.80+/-0.85%. It could be shown that O2 is indeed a parent species and that the derived abundances point to a primordial origin. One crucial question is whether the O2 abundance is peculiar to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko or Jupiter family comets in general or whether also Oort cloud comets such as comet 1P/Halley contain similar amounts of molecular oxygen. We investigated mass spectra obtained by the Neutral Mass Spectrometer instrument obtained during the flyby by the European Space Agency's Giotto probe at comet 1P/Halley. Our investigation indicates that a production rate of O2 of 3.7+/-1.7% with respect to water is indeed compatible with the obtained Halley data and therefore that O2 might be a rather common and abundant parent species.

The outflow force of molecular bipolar outflows is a key parameter in theories of young stellar feedback on their surroundings. The focus of many outflow studies is the correlation between the outflow force, bolometric luminosity and envelope mass. However, it is difficult to combine the results of different studies in large evolutionary plots over many orders of magnitude due to the range of data quality, analysis methods and corrections for observational effects such as opacity and inclination. We aim to determine the outflow force for a sample of low luminosity embedded sources. We will quantify the influence of the analysis method and the assumptions entering the calculation of the outflow force. We use the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope to map 12CO J=3-2 over 2'x2' regions around 16 Class I sources of a well-defined sample in Ophiuchus at 15" resolution. The outflow force is then calculated using seven different methods differing e.g. in the use of intensity-weighted emission and correction factors for inclination. The results from the analysis methods differ from each other by up to a factor of 6, whereas observational properties and choices in the analysis procedure affect the outflow force by up to a factor of 4. For the sample of Class I objects, bipolar outflows are detected around 13 sources including 5 new detections, where the three non-detections are confused by nearby outflows from other sources. When combining outflow forces from different studies, a scatter by up to a factor of 5 can be expected. Although the true outflow force remains unknown, the separation method (separate calculation of dynamical time and momentum) is least affected by the uncertain observational parameters. We present 50-210 um spectral scans of 30 Class 0/I protostellar sources, obtained with Herschel-PACS, and 0.5-1000 um SEDs, as part of the Dust, Ice, and Gas in Time (DIGIT) Key Program. Some sources exhibit up to 75 H2O lines ranging in excitation energy from 100-2000 K, 12 transitions of OH, and CO rotational lines ranging from J=14-13 up to J=40-39. [O I] is detected in all but one source in the entire sample; among the sources with detectable [O I] are two Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs). The mean 63/145 um [O I] flux ratio is 17.2 +/- 9.2. The [O I] 63 um line correlates with Lbol, but not with the time-averaged outflow rate derived from low-J CO maps. [C II] emission is in general not local to the source. The sample Lbol increased by 1.25 (1.06) and Tbol decreased to 0.96 (0.96) of mean (median) values with the inclusion of the Herschel data. Most CO rotational diagrams are characterized by two optically thin components ( = (0.70 +/- 1.12) x 10^49 total particles). N_CO correlates strongly with Lbol, but neither Trot nor N_CO(warm)/N_CO(hot) correlates with Lbol, suggesting that the total excited gas is related to the current source luminosity, but that the excitation is primarily determined by the physics of the interaction (e.g., UV- heating/shocks).
