Abstract The split-spectrum method (SSM) can largely isolate and correct for the ionospheric contribution in the L-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). The standard SSM is performed on the assumption of only the first-order ionospheric dispersive effect, which is proportional to the total electron content (TEC). It is also known that during extreme atmospheric events, either originated from the ionosphere or in the troposphere, other dispersive effects do exist and potentially provide new insights into the dynamics of the atmosphere, but there have been few detection reports of such signals by InSAR. We apply L-band InSAR into heavy rain cases and examine the applicability and limitation of the standard SSM. Since no events such as earthquakes to cause surface deformation took place, the non-dispersive component is apparently attributable to the large amount of water vapor associated with heavy rain, whereas there are spotty anomalies in the dispersive component that are closely correlated with the heavy rain area. The ionosonde and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) rate of total electron content index (ROTI) map both show little anomalies during the heavy rain, which suggests few ionospheric disturbances. Therefore, we interpret that the spotty anomalies in the dispersive component of the standard SSM during heavy rain are originated in the troposphere. While we can consider two physical mechanisms, one is runaway electron avalanche and the other is the dispersive effect due to rain, comparison with the observations from the ground-based lightning detection network and rain gauge data, we conclude that the rain dispersive effect is spatiotemporally favorable. We further propose a formulation to examine if another dispersive phase than the first-order TEC effect is present and apply it to the heavy rain cases as well as two extreme ionospheric sporadic-E events. Our formulation successfully isolates the presence of another dispersive phase during heavy rain that is in positive correlation with the local rain rate. In comparison with other dispersive phases during Sporadic-E episodes, the dispersive heavy rain phases seem to have the same order of magnitude with the ionospheric higher order effects.

This paper discusses the well-posedness and the multiscale algorithm for the heterogeneous scattering of Maxwell's equations in dispersive media with a periodic microstructure or with many subdivided periodic microstructures. An exact transparent boundary condition is developed to reduce the scattering problem into an initial-boundary value problem in heterogeneous materials. The well-posedness and the stability analysis for the reduced problem are derived. The multiscale asymptotic expansions of the solution for the reduced problem are presented. The convergence results of the multiscale asymptotic method are proved for the dispersive media with a periodic microstructure. A multiscale Crank-Nicolson mixed finite element method (FEM) is proposed where the perfectly matched layer (PML) is utilized to truncate infinite domain problems. In this paper we present a Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) algorithm for the simulation of electromagnetic wave interaction with a Debye dispersive medium. This new formulation is based on the use of the polarization currents in the medium. The auxiliary differential equation (ADE) method is considered to deal with dispersion after the classical discretization. The accuracy and efficiency of this approach were tested on 1D Debye medium by calculating the reflection coefficient on an air-dielectric interface. The potential of the developed algorithm to model the existence of tumors in a human breast is also demonstrated. The obtained results compared with the analytic model show a good agreement. The number of operations needed for each iteration has been reduced, hence the computational time in comparison with time convolution techniques, while maintaining a comparable numerical accuracy.

The risk of human exposure to finely-dispersed aerosol particles being airborne indoors is determined by the size and the number concentration of particles, the intensity of an aerosol emission source, the air filtration and ventilation efficiency, etc. The emphasis in this article is on behaviour patterns of aerosol particles when exposed to ultrasonic and electrostatic fields in different conditions of air temperature and relative humidity. Wood flour having sizes of interest (characteristic particle diameter about 10 μm) is chosen as a model aerosol. The article considers a physical and mathematical model presenting the evolution of aerosol particles in external fields, taking into account the moisture content and the temperature of a dispersive medium. The efficiency of ultrasonic and electrostatic precipitation in different relative humidity and temperature conditions in an enclosed space was studied using optical measurement methods of particle size and concentration. In this paper, the transient electromagnetic–thermal simulation is performed for dispersive media using the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method. Both the frequency-dependent and temperature-dependent properties of dispersive media are considered in the modeling. Instead of executing the complex convolution in the time domain, an auxiliary differential equation (ADE) method is employed to manipulate dispersive media, where the polarization current density is introduced as an auxiliary variable. While dealing with the thermal issue by the DGTD, the heat flux is utilized to construct the ADE for solving the thermal conduction equation. As the heat source in electromagnetic–thermal simulation, the transient power loss density for three typical dispersive media (Debye, Lorentz, and Drude) is derived by the electrodynamic approach and also explained with equivalent circuit models. The validity and accuracy of the proposed electromagnetic–thermal co-simulation method are demonstrated by the numerical examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is concerned with the approximation of the time domain Maxwell equations in a dispersive propagation medium by a Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain (DGTD) method. The Debye model is used to describe the dispersive behavior of the medium. We adapt the locally implicit time integration method from Verwer (2010) and derive a convergence analysis to prove that the locally implicit DGTD method for Maxwell–Debye equations retains its second order convergence.
