ESTUARIES , *SEA horses , *STATURE , *POPULATION density , *MANGROVE forests , *COASTS , *SALINITY - Abstract
The longsnout seahorse (Hippocampus reidi) is a vulnerable species found along most of the Brazilian coastline, such as semi-arid estuaries with strong rainfall seasonality, hypersalinity, and low depth. To evaluate the population structure of H. reidi over time, we monitored the seahorse population in the Pacoti estuary (Brazil) for one year, based on 248 registered specimens. Salinity, water transparency, sex, pregnancy, body height, and holdfast use were registered. Mixed linear models revealed that sampling month, salinity, and transparency had no influence on population density in the lower zone of the estuary. Pregnant individuals were more frequent in the dry season and at higher salinities. Mean body height (12.7 cm) increased in the dry season. Bright colors were predominant. The seahorses employed nine types of holdfasts, most often mangrove roots, and were found to reproduce throughout the year, peaking in the dry season. Salinity and transparency did not impact population density. In Brazilian semi-arid estuaries, the longsnout seahorse is strongly associated with mangrove vegetation, used as holdfast. Therefore, the conservation of seahorse populations depends on the conservation of the local mangrove forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DENGUE , *AEDES , *COMMUNICABLE diseases , *ARBOVIRUSES , *TROPICAL medicine - Abstract
Dengue is a tropical infectious disease transmitted through the bite of female mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and is of the most common arboviruses in the world. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of the number of hospitalizations for dengue cases in Brazil between the years 2008 and 2020, comparing the incidences by month, year, states and regions of Brazil. Data on hospitalizations for dengue in the 26 Federative Units of Brazil and the Federal District were used, and these data were obtained through the Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde do Brasil (DATASUS) [Department of Data Processing of the Unified Health System in Brazil]. Investigating cases over the years, 2010 recorded the highest number of cases (275.87 ± 20.01) and 2018 the lowest (52.59 ± 5.23). State data differ greatly, with Bahia standing out (596.63 ± 48.41) with the highest number of cases. There is a predominance of hospitalizations during the first semester in Brazilian states and the region of Brazil with the highest number of hospitalizations was the Southeast (281.67 ± 18.72), and the lowest was the South (66.18 ± 9.22). In conclusion, there is no strong trend of increase or decrease of cases over the years; months after the rainy season recorded a higher number of cases; warmer regions had more cases than colder ones.

The bees of the Meliponini tribe, popularly known as indigenous or stingless (ASF), constitute a tribe of eusocial insects that use different substrates for nesting, such as hollows and forks of trees, cavities in the ground and human constructions. Aiming at a better understanding of substrate selection for nesting, the objective of the present study was to report the species of Meliponini and the respective plant species used for nesting, in anthropized areas, in the municipality of Inconfidentes - Minas Gerais. The work was carried out in three areas from April 2021 to February 2022. Thirteen nests of five genera/species of meliponines occupying different tree families/species were recorded. The stingless bees found were Scaptotrigona sp., Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille), Plebeia droryana (Friese), Tetragona clavipes (Fabricius) and Cephalotrigona capitata (Smith), corroborating studies that indicate the genera as successful in occupying disturbed forests, with the exception of Cephalotrigona (Schwarz). The trees most used for nesting Meliponini were Eucalyptus sp. and individuals of the Lauraceae, Pinaceae and Fabaceae families. The results are related to the greater supply of substrates by individuals of Eucalyptus sp. in an area of abandoned forestry, with large trees with the possibility of forming cavities, and history of successful nesting of ASF in individuals of the families Lauraceae and Fabaceae. Population fluctuation of Blastopsylla occidentalis in eucalyptus plantation in Sinop, Mato Grosso (Brazil) A B S T R A C T The eucalyptus shoot psyllid Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor, 1985 (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) is native to Australia and has been inadvertedly introduced into other continents, including the Americas. The colonies are concentrated on the apical tips of the branches, where adults and immatures suck plant sap, causing distortions, reduced growth, death of the apical tip and general weakening of the plant. This work aims to evaluate the population fluctuation of the eucalyptus shoot psyllid under field conditions, in Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The observations were made between May 2018 and April 2021, in plantations of hybrids of Eucalyptus urophylla x E. camaldulensis, with collections carried out in intervals of 20 days. To obtain eggs and immatures, eucalypt branchlets were collected and, to capture adults, an entomological net was used. As a result, monthly averages per plant of 14.4 eggs, 12.6 immatures and 5.2 adults were obtained. The highest number of B. occidentalis individuals occurred in the dry season (May to September) and population decline in the periods with high rainfall (December to January), showing an inversely proportional correlation between the insect population and rainfall. None of the insect phases was significantly correlated with temperature. Blastopsylla occidentalis was found in the field in all life stages (eggs, immatures and adults), at all times of the year, indicating that, under the observed conditions, the species is polyvoltine. Despite the high number of fish species described for the Amazon region, the ichthyofauna that inhabits the depths of the main channels of large tropical rivers is one of the least known. In order to know the diversity patterns of these fish in whitewater rivers of the Central Amazon, we used data from the main channel benthic fish assemblage of the Japurá, Purus and Madeira rivers and tested the hypothesis that there are marked spatial and seasonal differences in the composition of the fish community among them. For this, we used a multivariate dispersion test, total β diversity and its decomposition into local (LCBD) and species contribution to β diversity (SCBD). Additionally, we tested for relationships between LCBD values and richness, total abundance, and environmental variables. We categorized species with higher SCBD values into resident or migratory to investigate the potential importance of floodplains to benthic fish assemblage of the main channel of whitewater rivers. Our results corroborate the proposed hypothesis, showing that there are seasonal and inter-river differences in benthic ichthyofauna, being more evident for the Purus River. LCBD showed strong negative relationships with species richness and total abundance, particularly in the Japurá and Madeira rivers in rising season, indicating that rivers and season with high uniqueness in their composition also had low richness and abundance. LCBD was negatively correlated with conductivity and pH, which increased with declining these environmental variables, as observed mainly in Japurá River in both seasons. Approximately one third of the species had higher than average SCBD values and were considered major contributors to β diversity, as well as classified as migratory. This demonstrates the importance of conducting studies that use spatial and seasonal variables, in addition to including the background fish fauna in conservation studies, expanding the protected area and taking into account the different patterns of diversity between rivers. Furthermore, these differences in assemblage composition might be explained by the asymmetrical spatial use of habitats during different seasons, strongly suggesting the importance of the flood-pulse cycle for maintaining diversity in this environment.

The variability of the organisms living in a given area constitute what is referred to as biodiversity, one of nature's fundamental properties, responsible for the balance and stability of ecosystems. The loss of biodiversity has been of great concern to scientists, especially because of the role played by human activities in this regard, able to lead to irreversible circumstances. The São Paulo Research Foundation (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, FAPESP) plays a major role in supporting research efforts in the most diverse branches of science. In the late 1990's, FAPESP launched a major program to promote research on biodiversity, named BIOTA/FAPESP. So far, this program has financed the conduction of 26 projects, involving research activities in most of Brazil, while focusing mainly the State of São Paulo. These projects have generated about 1140 publications in peer-reviewed journals of high standard, providing relevant information, including the original description of 1187 species and 76 genera, the complementary description of 350 species, as well as a number of inventory works, biological studies, etc. The program has also been instrumental in the establishment or adequacy of research facilities and training of new taxonomists. Most extensively studied groups of terrestrial invertebrates include Insecta of the orders Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Diptera, and Arachnida of the subclasses Araneae and Acari. Distinct projects have also contributed to the detection of organisms potentially useful as biological control agents and in the determination of maps of major interest for the establishment of public policies. In the future, priority groups for study should include the Annelida and the Nematoda, for the potential both have as beneficial organisms, or for the potential some Nematoda have as organisms harmful to plants and animals.

The southeast of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) is characterized by a significant recurrence of nocturnal temperature inversion processes (ITN), mainly due to the large number of clear days throughout the year. The Segura River Basin District (DHS) has an altitude difference of 2100m in 150km with alternating valley areas and orographically complex and rugged areas. This gives rise to marked night-time thermal contrasts, whose vertical thermal differences are 13.0ºC between cold air pools (CAP) and uneven surfaces. Thermal contrasts are analysed through 58 meteorological observatories in the 50 mornings with the highest intensity of thermal inversion in the last years of observation (2011-2020). Furthermore, the characteristics and triggering causes of such processes are analysed through the analysis of variables influencing the distribution of minimum temperatures (wind, relative humidity, ...). In addition, a high-resolution satellite analysis technique is presented, through the elaboration of thermographies (distribution of surface temperatures) by means of the ASTER sensor, which complement, from the spatial point of view, the distribution of minimum temperatures in the early mornings of ITN in some sectors of the study area. Among the most conclusive results, notable thermal differences stand out during stable early mornings (mean differences of 7.1ºC and absolute differences of 13ºC between observatories located at valley bottoms (CAP) and those located at higher altitudes, in orographically rugged areas), recorded under masses warm and dry air at a geopotential level of 850hPa.

Atlantic Forest (AF) is amongst the most threatened forests in the world. To decide where conservation efforts should be focused to preserve species, assessment of ecological and biogeographic processes nowadays are crucial. Patterns of the distribution of organisms can provide an important source of information underlying the biogeographical history of a biota. Here, our main objective was to identify Areas of Endemism (AoE) for non-volant small mammals in the AF and to investigate if those AoE are covered by protected areas. We performed quantitative and qualitative approaches to delimit AoE and calculated the area overlaid by Conservation Units (CU) within each AoE. Our results supported the recognition of seven AoE for small mammals in the AF, which largely are congruent with previous studies undertaken on other organisms, thereby highlighting the importance of those regions as hotspots of endemism. Most of the AoE recovered in the present study have less than 12% of their territory covered by forest remnants, and less than 11% of their entire range is under legal protection. These findings bring to light an important discussion on how information pertaining to the representativeness of CU within regions of high endemicity could help to identify areas in need of urgent protection within a threatened biodiversity hotspot.

Marine apex predators, such as coastal dolphins, are key components of ecosystem function and dynamics; understanding their spatial use therefore is important for conservation planning. Here, we describe spatial use of the threatened Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis , within a mosaic of protected areas at their southern range in the Paranaguá estuarine complex (PEC), Brazil. Based on environmental characteristics and S. guianensis population densities, individual photo-identification surveys were focused on two sectors of the northern mouth of the PEC between 2013 and 2015. We photo-identified 107 individuals and recorded 351 groups of Guiana dolphins; nearly 50% of which contained calves. Group sizes were small (mean ± SD : Sector 1 = 3.4 ± 2.7; Sector 2 = 3.6 ± 2.0) and ranged from 1 to 30 individuals. Clustering algorithms were applied to resighted, photo-identified Guiana dolphins to classify individuals as "residents" (sighted in 87% of surveys, n = 11) and "transients" (two clusters; 62%, n = 22; 95%, n = 72). All individuals predominantly were observed foraging (90% in Sector 1 and 76% in Sector 2), but spatial use by transient individuals differed from the residents in terms of environmental (slope, water depth, and rainfall) and behavioral factors (presence of calves and foraging behavior). Compared to transients, resident dolphins ranged over smaller areas, typically more suitable for feeding, calf caring, and more protected from predators and vessels. Because resident Guiana dolphins exhibit small home ranges, they are particularly vulnerable to local anthropogenic activities and habitat loss. These characteristics imply a strong need for regionalized management plans to reduce negative impacts and to maintain the ecological functionality of the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work sought the survey of species and information about the distribution of the Class Oligochaeta in reservoirs sampled in the Sediment Quality Monitoring Network of CETESB (Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo). As such, this study aimed to inventory the limnic oligochaetes fauna to expand knowledge of the ecology and distribution of this group in reservoirs in the state of São Paulo. Ninety replicates were performed in 12 reservoirs in the state of São Paulo between 2014 and 2016, using van Veen or Ponar samplers in the sublittoral region, and Ekman-Birge in the deep region. Twenty-eight taxa were inventoried, belonging to the families Naididae and Opistocystidae. The species Dero righii and Pristina longisoma were recorded for the first time in São Paulo State, Nais magnaseta and Spirosperma velutina were first recorded in Brazil. The results presented here make this inventory extremely important for understanding the distribution of aquatic oligochaetes throughout the Brazilian territory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ANGLERFISHES , *SEXUAL dimorphism , *ANATOMICAL variation , *SEAMOUNTS , *CORAL reefs & islands - Abstract
The deep-sea anglerfishes of the suborder Ceratioidei (Lophiiformes) are represented by about 170 valid species with some of the most extraordinary morphological and reproductive adaptations among vertebrates, including extreme sexual dimorphism and male parasitism. Here we report on the diversity and distribution of rare ceratioids collected during the ABRACOS (Acoustics along the BRAzilian COaSt) expeditions off northeastern Brazil and the Fernando de Noronha Ridge (Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, and associated seamounts). Chaenophryne ramifera, Oneirodes anisacanthus, O. carlsbergi, Gigantactis watermani, and unidentified specimens of Caulophryne, Dolopichthys, and Rhynchactis are recorded for the first time in the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone. Ceratias uranoscopus, Melanocetus johnsonii, and Chaenophryne draco have their distributions extended in Brazilian waters. Caulophryne, O. anisacanthus, and G. watermani are also recorded for the first time in the western South Atlantic. The specimen of G. watermani reported here represents the third known specimen of the species, and variations of its escal anatomy in relation to the holotype are described. Based on specimens examined and a review of records in the literature, 20 species of the Ceratioidei, in addition to unidentified species of Caulophryne, Dolopichthys, and Rhynchactis, are confirmed in the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone. This comment came to refute and correct the idea of Charles (2007) about the negatively implications in the income distribution when the government expand the consumption in favour to households. We prove that the political choice, to both cases (increasing consumption or increasing profit), impact positively the income distribution and does not affect the essential nature of the Kaldor neo-Pasinetti dynamic equilibrium results and the "Cambridge Equation". The stability of the model is guarantee by applying the Olech's Theorem to the case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
