Abstract

In this work we present the results from two experiments dedicated to search for quadrupolecollective isovector valence-shell excitation, the states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), in nuclei around the doubly magic nucleus 208Pb. 212Po was studied in an α-transfer reaction. 204Hg was studied in an inverse kinematics Coulomb excitation reaction on a carbon target. Both experiments provide indications for existence of one-phonon MSSs. Those are the first experimentally identified MSSs in the mass A ≈ 208 region.

Abstract

A program of high-precision half-life and branching-ratio measurements for superallowed Fermi β emitters is being carried out at TRIUMF’s Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility. Recent half-life measurements for the superallowed decays of 14O, 18Ne, and 26Alm, as well as branching-ratio measurements for 26Alm and 74Rb are reported. These results provide demanding tests of the Standard Model and the theoretical isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections in superallowed Fermi β decays.

Abstract

We used the 8$\pi$ $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC radiocative ion beam facility to obtain high-precision branching ratios for $^{19}$Ne $\beta^+$ decay to excited states in $^{19}$F. Together with other previous work, our measurements determine the superallowed $1/2^+ \to 1/2^+$ beta branch to the ground state in $^{19}$F to be 99.9878(7)\%, which is three times more precise than known previously. The implications of these measurements for testing a variety of weak interaction symmetries are discussed briefly.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$, the $2^+_2$ and the $3^-_1$ states of $^{210}$Po have been measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The results for the lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for consistent description of the properties of the yrast $2^+_1$, $4^+_1$, $6^+_1$, and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. The Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na,p gamma) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1) hbar-omega shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei -- 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg -- is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion., Comment: 6 figures

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first 2⁺ excited states of ²¹²,²¹⁰Po were measured in two transfer reactions ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,⁸Be)²¹²Po and ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,¹⁰Be)²¹⁰Po by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method and by the Doppler Shift Attenuation method (DSAM), respectively. The derived absolute B(E2) values of 2.6(3) W.u. for ²¹²Po and 1.83(28) W.u. for ²¹⁰Po indicate low collectivity. It is shown that the properties of the yrast 2₁⁺, 4₁⁺, 6₁⁺ and 8₁⁺ states in both nuclei cannot be described consistently in the framework of nuclear shell models. It is also demonstrated in the case of ²¹⁰Po that Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

We report a precise determination of the 19Ne half-life to be $T_{1/2} = 17.262 \pm 0.007$ s. This result disagrees with the most recent precision measurements and is important for placing bounds on predicted right-handed interactions that are absent in the current Standard Model. We are able to identify and disentangle two competing systematic effects that influence the accuracy of such measurements. Our findings prompt a reassessment of results from previous high-precision lifetime measurements that used similar equipment and methods., Comment: 5 pages and 5 figures. Abstract

The equations for Yang-Mills field in a medium are derived in a linear approximation with respect to the gauge coupling parameter and the external field. The obtained equations closely resemble the macroscopic Maxwell equations. A canonical quantization is performed for a family of Fermi-like gauges in the case of constant and diagonal (in the group indices) tensors of electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The physical subspace is defined and the gauge field propagator is evaluated for a particular choice of the gauge. The propagator is applied for evaluation of the cross-section of ellastic quark scattering in the Born approximation. Abstract

The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+) and 4(1)(+) states of Po-208 were measured in the a-transfer reaction Pb-204(C-12, Be-8) Po-208 by gamma-ray spectroscopy utilizing the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The newly extracted transition strengths alongside ones of the decay of the 2(2)(+) state were compared to the results of large-scale shell-model calculations using an effective interaction derived from the realistic CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. The comparison indicates the importance of the quadrupole isovector excitations in the valence shell for a fine tuning of the two-body matrix elements of the shell-model interaction.

Abstract

The 5/2(1)(-), 9/2(1)(-), and 11 /2(1)(-) states in Po-209 were populated in the beta decay of At-209 and their lifetimes measured using the electronic gamma-gamma fast timing technique. The lifetime of the 9/2(1)(-) state is measured for first time. The lifetime of the 5/2(1)(-) is measured to be shorter than the value adopted in the literature while the lifetime of the 11/2(1)(-) state agrees well with the previous measurement. In order to get deeper insight into the structure of the states, a shell-model calculation was carried out adopting a microscopic effective interaction derived from the realistic CD-Bonn potential. The comparison between theoretical and experimental data for the low-lying negative-parity states of Po-209 supports the reliability of the predicted wave functions, which are found to be dominated by the coupling of a neutron hole to the yrast states of Po-210. However, it also points to the important role played by minor wave-function components in describing the reduced electromagnetic strengths, suggesting the need of additional configuration mixing for achieving a better quantitative agreement.

The absolute M1 strengths, B(M1; 2(2)(-) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.033(8)mu(2)(N), B(M1 ; 2(3)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) = 0.26(-0.10)(+0.11)mu(2)(N), and B(M1; 2(4)+ -> 2(1)(+)) < 0.04 mu(2)(N) identify the 2(3)(+) state as the main fragment of the one-quadrupole-phonon proton-neutron mixed-symmetry state of Nd-140. The degree of F-spin mixing in Nd-140 was quantified with the determination of the mixing matrix element VF-mix < 7(-7)(-13) keV.

Abstract

We present the results from an experiment dedicated to measure the lifetime of the 2(2)(+) state, candidate for the one-phonon mixed-symmetry state, of Po-208. This nucleus was studied in the a-transfer reaction Pb-204(C-12,Be-8)208Po and the lifetime of the 2(2)(+) state was determined by utilizing the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The experimental data show that the 2(2)(+) state decays with a sizable M1 transition to the 2(1)(+) state revealing its isovector nature.

Abstract

Low-lying yrast states of Po-204 and Po-206 were investigated by the gamma-gamma fast timing technique with LaBr3(Ce) detectors. Excited states of these nuclei were populated in the Au-197(B-11, 4n)Po-204 and the Pt-198(C-12, 4n )Po-206 fusion-evaporation reactions, respectively. The beams were delivered by the FN-Tandem accelerator at the University of Cologne. The lifetimes of the 4(1)(+) states of both nuclei were measured, along with an upper lifetime limit for the 2(1)(+) state of Po-204. A comparison between the derived B(E2; 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)) values and results from simplified empirical two-state mixing calculations suggests that for the 4(1)(+) states of even-even polonium isotopes the transition from single-particle mode at N = 126 to collective mode, when reducing the number of neutrons, occurs above N = 122.

Abstract

International audience; The lifetimes of the $ 2^+_1$ , the $ 2^+_2$ and the $ 3^-_1$ states of$^{210}$Po have been measured in the$^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the $ 2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast $ 2^+_1$ , $ 4^+_1$ , $ 6^+_1$ , and $ 8^+_1$ states of$^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

International audience; The lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state of $^{212}$Po was measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{8}$Be)$^{212}$Po transfer reaction by γ -ray spectroscopy employing the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method. The derived absolute B(E2) value of 2.6(3)W.u. indicates a low collectivity and contradicts previous claims of α-cluster components in the structure of the $2^+_1$ state. It is demonstrated that a consistent description of the properties of the $2^+_1$−$4^+_1$−$6^+_1$−$8^+_1$ sequence in $^{212}$Po cannot be achieved in the framework of a single-j shell-model calculation, either. This puzzle is traced to the properties of the seniority-2 configurations in $^{210}$Pb and $^{210}$Po.

Abstract

International audience; We present the results from an experiment dedicated to search for quadrupole-collective isovector valence-shellexcitations, states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), of 212Po. This nucleus was studiedin an α-transfer reaction. The lifetimes of two short-lived excited states, candidates for the one-phonon MSS,were determined by utilizing the Doppler shift attenuation method. The experimental results are in qualitativeagreement with a simple single-j shell model calculation, which, together with the observed lack of quadrupolecollectivity, indicates that the isovector nature of low-lying states is a property of the leading single-particlevalence shell configuration.

Abstract

The lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state of Po-212 was measured in the Pb-208(C-12, Be-8)Po-212 transfer reaction by gamma-ray spectroscopy employing the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method. The derived absolute B(E2) value of 2.6(3) W.u. indicates a low collectivity and contradicts previous claims of alpha-cluster components in the structure of the 2(1)(+) state. It is demonstrated that a consistent description of the properties of the 2(1)(+)-4(1)(+)-6(1)(+)-8(1)(+) sequence in Po-212 cannot be achieved in the framework of a single-j shell-model calculation, either. This puzzle is traced to the properties of the seniority-2 configurations in Pb-210 and Po-210.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the 2(1)(+), the 2(2)(+) and the 3-1 states of Po-210 have been measured in the Pb-208(C-12, Be-10)Po-210 transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast 2(1)(+), 4(1)(+), 6(1)(+), and 8(1)(+) states of Po-210 in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

Abstract

WOS: 000250620900030, High-spin states of (191,193)Au and (192)Pt have been populated in the (186)W((11)B, xn) and (186)W((11)B, p4n) reactions, respectively, at a beam energy of 68 MeV and their gamma decay was studied using the YRAST Ball detector array at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. The level scheme of (193)Au has been extended up to I(pi)=55/2(+). New transitions were observed also in (191)Au and (192)Pt. Particle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (PTR) and Total Routhian Surface (TRS) calculations were performed to determine the equilibrium deformations of the Au isotopes. The predictions for oblate deformations in these nuclei are in agreement with the experimental data. Development of nonaxial shapes is discussed within the framework of the PTR model.

Abstract

Nucleon transfer experiments have in recent years begun to be exploited in the study of nuclei far from stability, using radioactive beams in inverse kinematics. New techniques are still being developed in order to perform these experiments. The present experiment is designed to study the odd-odd nucleus Na which has a high density of states and therefore requires gamma-ray detection to distinguish between them. The experiment employed an intense beam of up to 3×10 pps of Na at 5.0 MeV/nucleon from the ISAC-II facility at triumf. The new silicon array SHARC was used for the first time and was coupled to the segmented clover gamma-ray array TIGRESS. A novel thin plastic scintillator detector was employed at zero degrees to identify and reject reactions occurring on the carbon component of the (CD) target. The efficiency of the background rejection using this detector is described with respect to the proton and gamma-ray spectra from the (d,p) reaction. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

A high-precision branching-ratio measurement for the superallowed β + emitter 26Alm was performed at the TRIUMF-ISAC radioactive ion beam facility. An upper limit of 12 ppm at 90% confidence level was found for the second forbidden β + decay of 26Alm to the 2+ 1 state at 1809 keV in 26Mg. An inclusive upper limit of 15 ppm at 90% confidence level was found when considering all possible nonanalog β + /EC decay branches of 26Alm, resulting in a superallowed branching ratio of 100.0000+0 −0.0015%.

Abstract

States in 26Na were populated in the (d, pγ) reaction, induced by bombarding deuterium target nuclei with an intense reaccelerated beam of 25Na ions from the ISAC2 accelerator at TRIUMF. Gamma-rays were recorded in coincidence with protons and used to extract differential cross sections for 21 states up to the neutron decay threshold of 5 MeV. Results for levels below 3 MeV are discussed in detail and compared with shell model calculations and with previous work. The angular distributions of decay gamma-rays were measured for individual states and are compared to theoretically calculated distributions, highlighting some issues for future work.
