Abstract

Cerebral aneurysms are an abnormal ballooning of blood vessels which have the potential to rupture and cause hemorrhagic stroke. The diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of cerebral aneurysms is highly dependant on high resolution imaging. As an imaging modality capable of cross-sectional resolution down to 10 μm, intraluminal optical coherence tomography (OCT) has great potential in improving care for cerebral aneurysms. The ability to assess the blood vessel microanatomy in vivo may be able to predict aneurysm growth and rupture. During treatment, intraluminal OCT may aid in assessment of treatment efficacy and complication avoidance, such as via visualization of in-stent thrombosis, stent wall apposition, and the fate of covered branch vessels. This technology can also be used in post-treatment monitoring, to assess for aneurysmal remnants or for endothelialisation and healing over the diseased segments. The goal of this clinically focused narrative review is to provide an overview of the previous applications of intraluminal OCT in cerebral aneurysms and future prospects of applying this technology to improve care in patients with cerebral aneurysms, including a specific neurovascular OCT catheter, doppler OCT for high resolution blood flow assessment, and further research endeavors.

Abstract

Sensing is the process of detecting and monitoring any physico‐chemical environmental parameters. Herein, new self‐powered iontronic sensors, which utilize touch‐induced ionic charge separation in ionically conductive hydrogels, are introduced for potential use in object mapping, recognition, and localization. This is accomplished using high‐resolution stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing of stacked ionic assemblies consisting of discrete compartments having different ion transport properties. The latter assemblies readily allow programming the output voltage magnitude and polarity by means of variations in ion type, charge density, and cross‐linking density within the iontronic device. Voltages of up to 70 mV are generated on application of compressive strains of as much as 50% (≈22.5 kPa), with the magnitude directly proportional to stress, and the polarity dependent on the sign of the mobile ion. As a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, the resulting touch sensors are integrated on the fingertip to enable the tactile feedback, mimicking the tactile perception of objects for recognition applications. In addition, it is proposed that streaming potential is the underlying mechanism behind the iontronic touch sensors. Abstract

Symposium SB04 - Hydrogel Materials - From Theory to Applications via 3D and 4D Printing, paper SB04.05.02; International audience; Ionic conductors offer exciting device possibilities, particularly with the advent of highly extensible and easily synthesized hydrogels. Following on from recent work on hydrogel “ionic skin”, ‘piezo-ionic’ sensors and ionic artificial muscle, we present example ionic devices, including stretchable and transparent capacitive sensor arrays, pressure sensors that generate currents upon stretching, actuators that bend or contract when ions are inserted, as well as stretchable electrochromic elements and batteries.Hydrogels and other ionic conductors offer advantages over metals and semiconductors in being intrinsically stretchable and non-absorbing of visible light. Their moderate to low moduli and non-linear mechanical properties can match those of tissue, and make them of interest for use in human interfacing devices. On the other hand, ions are much less mobile than electrons, ionic conductors don’t have bandgaps, and, unlike electrons and holes, anions and cations don’t recombine. The materials are typically wet, and properties can depend significantly on dimensions, pH and temperature. Given these drawbacks, how can we make practical use of ionic conductors?In order to avoid being limited by the low mobility of ions, we can take two approaches. One is to implement gels and other ionic conductors in devices that consume very little current – such as capacitive sensor arrays. Even in low current devices, dropping temperatures can dramatically and unacceptably increase resistance, so a careful consideration of RC charging time is important in the design. Another approach to avoid being limited by low mobility is to make the transit distances short. We present bending actuators that can operate hundreds of hertz.Relative speed of ion motion is important in ‘piezo-ionic’ sensors, where application of a pressure gradient leads to differential rates of ion motion between positive and negative ions – and the generation of current. NMR and electromechanical measurements suggest that in hydrogels ions move more slowly than solvent, perhaps hindered by the polymer structure. The small voltages that result are sufficient to stimulate nerves.Electrochemical devices combine electronic and ionic conductors – for example in batteries, electrochromics and ionic diodes. In such cases, the electrode material is not as stretchable as the hydrogel. We present a symmetric conducting polymer-based electrochromic element that can stretch and change colour, and battery that is robust under extension.If ionic devices dry out, they will slow or stop. One approach to avoid drying is to use salts that dramatically reduce vapour pressure – but this can come at the cost of conductivity. We instead demonstrate the use of non-volatile ionic liquids to keep a capacitive sensor array working for years without encapsulation. Alternatively, low vapour transmission rate elastomers can keep fast actuators and stretchable batteries functional for months or even years without preventing bending.

Abstract

Paper 2.2.2; International audience; Trilayer ionic EAP actuators exhibit nonlinear electrical and mechanical properties as a function of their oxidation state making it more challenging to accurately predict their mechanical behavior. In this study, an analytical multi-physics model of the conducting polymer actuators is proposed to predict their non-linear dynamic mechanical behavior. To demonstrate the accuracy of the model, a trilayer actuator composed of a solid polymer electrolyte sandwiched between two poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) electrodes was fabricated and characterized. This system consists of an electrical subsystem, an electro-mechanical coupling matrix, and a mechanical subsystem described by using a rigid finite element method. The electrical conductivity and the volumetric capacitance, an empirical strain-to-charge ratio, and Young's modulus of the actuator as a function of the PEDOT electrode charge state were also implemented into the model, using measured values. The proposed model was represented using a Bond Graph formalism. The concordance between the simulations and the measurements confirmed the accuracy of the model in predicting the non-linear dynamic electrical and mechanical response of the actuators. In addition, the information extracted from the model also provided an insight into the critical parameters of the actuators and how they affect the actuator efficiency, as well as the energy distribution including dissipated, stored, and transferred energy.

42. Transparent and conformal 'piezoionic' touch sensor

Abstract

A polyurethane hydrogel based touch sensor with high transparency and conformability is demonstrated. Polyurethane hydrogels swollen with various electrolytes were compressed at a pressure of 30 kPa, simulating a fingertap on a conventional touch screen device. Unlike ionic polymer metal composite and conducting polymer trilayer sensors, where electrodes render the sensors opaque and relatively rigid, the electrodes used in this work are metal wires or strips, separated from each other by regions of transparent film, enabling transparency and compliance. The voltages and currents observed when the perturbation is above one electrode are on the order of 10(-2) V and 10(-7) A, relative to a second electrode that is approximately 1 cm away. The sign of voltage and current signals detected from perturbations made between electrodes is determined by relative proximity to each electrode, and the magnitude appears to decrease with increasing distance from the electrodes. These observations suggest that it may be possible to discriminate the location of touch based on signals transmitted to the edges of an ionically conductive film. A model to describe the inhomogeneous ionic distribution and predict the resultant voltage and current is presented to qualitatively explain the sensing, based on the Donnan potential.
