Objective: For 3,670 stroke patients from the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Belgium, and Italy, we performed a genome-wide meta-analysis of white matter hyperintensity volumes (WMHV) on data imputed to the 1000 Genomes reference dataset to provide insights into disease mechanisms. Methods: We first sought to identify genetic associations with white matter hyperintensities in a stroke population, and then examined whether genetic loci previously linked to WMHV in community populations are also associated in stroke patients. Having established that genetic associations are shared between the 2 populations, we performed a meta-analysis testing which associations with WMHV in stroke-free populations are associated overall when combined with stroke populations. Results: There were no associations at genome-wide significance with WMHV in stroke patients. All previously reported genome-wide significant associations with WMHV in community populations shared direction of effect in stroke patients. Background. Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to synthesize the evidence evaluating the association between obesity and 13 cancers shown previously to be significantly associated with obesity. Methods. Relevant papers from a previously conducted review were included in this paper. In addition, database searches of Medline and Embase identified studies published from the date of the search conducted for the previous review (January, 2007) until May, 2011. The reference lists of relevant studies and systematic reviews were screened to identify additional studies. Relevance assessment, quality assessment, and data extraction for each study were conducted by two reviewers independently. Meta-analysis was performed for men and women separately using DerSimonian and Laird’s random effects model. Results. A total of 98 studies conducted in 18 countries from 1985 to 2011 were included. Data extraction was completed on the 57 studies judged to be of strong and moderate methodological quality. Results illustrated that obese men were at higher risk for developing colon (Risk Ratio (RR), 1.57), renal (1.57), gallbladder (1.47), pancreatic (1.36), and malignant melanoma cancers (1.26). Obese women were at higher risk for esophageal adenocarcinoma (2.04), endometrial (1.85), gallbladder (1.82), renal (1.72), pancreatic (1.34), leukemia (1.32), postmenopausal breast (1.25), and colon cancers (1.19). Conclusions. The results of this meta-analysis illustrate a significant, positive, and, for some cancers, strong association between obesity and cancer incidence. Given that approximately 23% of Canadians are obese, a significant proportion of cancer in Canada could be avoided if obesity was eliminated or significantly reduced.

The purpose of this study was to better understand how partnerships are initiated, maintained, and sustained in public health practice. A qualitative design was employed to conduct individual interviews and focus groups. The participants included practitioners from 6 purposively selected public health units in the Canadian province of Ontario that developed partnerships in program planning. It was found that partnerships play an essential role in program planning but that minimal information is available regarding the partnership process. Most partnerships are formed on an ad hoc basis, with little formalization. Public health professionals rely on their experiential knowledge when seeking out and working with partners. These findings can serve to inform future public health planning and strengthen the formation and maintenance of partnerships in public health and other sectors. Understanding how partnerships are initiated, maintained, and sustained is an important first step in supporting the use of research to advance collaborative public health efforts.

In the literature it has been argued that Europeanization activities in higher education are likely to reshape national higher education policies and lead to policy and institutional convergence in varying degrees. As a result of the tightening of transnational linkages and the rapid consolidation of joint policy-making platforms such as the Bologna Process it is assumed that nation states will be prompted to reconfigure existing policy frameworks and historically embedded practices. Various authors have also argued that the Europeanization of higher education, and most prominently the Bologna Process, may have a transformative impact on institutions of governance, even though the main action lines aim to transform the core activities of universities rather than national institutional settings for higher education. In this article we will examine very current developments in higher education governance in two eastern European countries – Lithuania and Bulgaria – and to what extent those developments were shaped by the Bologna reform. With regard to the transformation of the state, we analyze to what extent the state has moved away from a model of state-centered policy design and control to a model of governance based on what Neave (1998) coined as the “evaluative state”. To do so, we will look, in particular, at funding policy and the emergence of a system of quality assurance. To conclude, we examine whether the governance patterns of both countries have converged and address to what extent the Bologna Process has increased policy similarity, while seeking to identify the factors accounting for potential variations.

The purpose of this systematic overview was to summarize evidence about the effectiveness of adolescent suicide prevention curricula programs. A comprehensive search of published and unpublished literature resulted in retrieval of 11 relevant studies. The findings, of this overview indicate that there is currently insufficient evidence to support curriculum-based suicide prevention programs. The evidence suggests that there may be both beneficial and harmful effects of the programs on students. In most studies, knowledge related to suicide improved as a result of the programs. However, studies found both beneficial and harmful effects on attitudes related to suicide. One study found in increase in hopelessness and maladaptive coping for males following the intervention. The literature suggests that more broadly based comprehensive school health programs should be evaluated for their effectiveness in addressing the determinants of adolescent risk behaviour.

Given a polygonal region containing a target point (which we assume is the origin), it is not hard to see that there are two points on the perimeter that are antipodal, that is, whose midpoint is the origin. We prove three generalizations of this fact. (1) For any polygon (or any compact planar set) containing the origin, it is possible to place a given set of weights on the boundary so that their barycenter (center of mass) coincides with the origin, provided that the largest weight does not exceed the sum of the other weights. (2) On the boundary of any 3-dimensional compact set containing the origin, there exist three points that form an equilateral triangle centered at the origin.
