The aim of this study was to evaluate the permanence and viability of diced cartilage grafts shaped with the help of biodegradable, three-dimensionally-printed polycaprolactone molds. METHODS: Three groups were studied in each of the eight rabbits: block cartilage (group 1), diced cartilage (group 2), and diced cartilage shaped with polycaprolactone molds (group 3). A total of 24 cartilage grafts were obtained at the end of the 12-week follow-up period, and 10 different histopathologic parameters were analyzed in each cartilage graft. RESULTS: Diced cartilages shaped with a three-dimensionally-printed polycaprolactone mold showed increased regeneration potential of chondrocytes, vascularization, and collagen production. Use of polycaprolactone molds did not cause any additional risk of inflammation, fibrosis, or metaplastic bone formation. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, it has been shown that three-dimensionally-printed polycaprolactone molds can be used safely in shaping diced cartilage grafts. In light of this study, it will be possible to produce hybrid grafts that can be used safely in many operations such as nasal reconstruction, rhinoplasty, auricle reconstruction, and repair of orbital floor fractures with the help of molds produced in more complex ways. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Three-dimensionally-printed polycaprolactone molds can be used to shape diced cartilages in the areas of both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

Estimates for roll damping are important input parameters for simulation studies on vessels operating at sea, e.g. FPSO mooring in waves, wind and current, workability and operability investigations, Dynamic Position studies, ship-to-ship operations and safety studies of vessels. To accurately predict the motions of vessels this quantity should be determined with confidence in the values. Traditionally, model experiments in water basins using so-called decay tests are carried out to determine the roll damping. With recent advancements in CFD modelling, the offshore industry has started using CFD as an alternative tool to compute the roll damping of FPSO’s. In order to help adopt CFD as a widely accepted tool, there is a need to develop confidence in CFD predictions. Therefore, a practical CFD modelling practice is developed within the Reproducible CFD JIP for roll decay CFD simulations. The Modelling Practice describes the geometry modelling, computational mesh, model set-up and post-processing for these type of CFD calculations. This modelling practice is verified and validated by three independent verifiers against available model test data. This paper provides an overview of the developed modelling practice and the calculated CFD results from the verifiers. The CFD modelling practice is benchmarked against available model test results for a tanker-shaped FPSO. By following this modelling practice, the CFD predictions for the equivalent linear damping coefficient and natural period of the roll motions are within 10% for all verifiers and within 10% from the model test results. Therefore, we conclude that when following the developed modelling practice for roll decay simulations, reliable, accurate and reproducible results can be obtained for the roll damping of tanker-shaped FPSOs.

An increasing use of submarine power cables is found in dynamic applications such as floating wind, floating wave and tidal generation technologies. These applications substantially differ from common applications, such as floating oil and gas installations in that they are more dynamic. Power cables that cross the water column, so-called umbilicals will be exposed to considerable extreme and fatigue loads mainly induced by the motion of the device, incident waves and tidal current. The actual loading regimes of dynamic submarine power cables in operation are not well understood for marine renewable energy (MRE) applications due to a lack of field experience. The cable design has to consider a combination of cable geometry, hydrodynamic parameters, suitable layout configuration, suitable ancillary systems (e.g. bend stiffeners) in relation to the environmental site conditions. This paper evaluates the influence of the environmental conditions and the cable design parameters on the mechanical loads and potential failure modes of a dynamic submarine power cable attached to a dynamic floating body in form of a generic point absorber. One notable result is the large effect of the tidal direction, even in relatively moderate flow conditions. The full range of tidal flow conditions should be considered in the power cable design to ensure that the cable MBR is not exceeded in any conditions. The shown configurations also give some insight into the possible variations of the geometric cable configuration. A well balanced S-curve shape yields some of the best results and achieves a good load distribution along the cable and the transition points, whilst avoiding cable compression. The design challenge for the cable configuration is to maintain the S-shape for as many environmental and device response modes as possible in order to achieve high reliability. This paper will be useful for cable, device and site developers of floating MRE to inform the selection of the most suitable cable design.

Objective: Group A Streptococci (GAS) are the most important bacterial cause of pharyngitis. Antibiotic therapy can be prescribed and failure to treat it is associated with suppurative and nonsuppurative complications. Nonsuppurative complications occur after a latency period of a few weeks and include acute rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with group A streptococci. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of nonsuppurative complications in properly treated children with GAS pharyngitis. Methods: We investigated the frequency of nonsuppurative complications in 1030 proven GAS pharyngitis patients between 5 and 15 years old, who were properly treated by a prospective observational study. All patients diagnosed with GAS pharyngitis were followed up prospectively using a standard form for six months made by monthly phone calls. Results: All the isolates recovered from the patients were susceptible to penicillin. Twentyseven (2.6%) patients developed scarlet fever. No other nonsuppurative complications occured in our patient cohort. Conclusions: Penicillin remains the drug of choice for treatment of GAS pharyngitis. The rate of nonsuppurative complications of GAS pharyngitis has decreased significantly in the antibiotic era. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis is now accepted as the treatment of choice for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and for heterozygotes with cardiovascular disease refractory to lipid-lowering drug therapy. However, a paucity of evidence has meant that detailed guidance on the extent of cholesterol reduction required to prevent the onset or progression of cardiovascular disease in these high risk patients is lacking. This review defines criteria for expressing the efficacy of apheresis, proposes target levels of total and LDL cholesterol for homozygotes and heterozygotes based on recent follow-up studies and suggests a scheme for monitoring cardiovascular disease in these patients. Establishing a uniform approach to data collection would facilitate the setting up of national or multi-national registers and might eventually provide the information needed to formulate evidence-based guidelines for LDL apheresis.
