23. Impact of Nutritional Status on Antibody Titer After Booster mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine Among Elderly Adults in Japan.

Abstract

Background Published studies on mRNA coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine effects focus on younger individuals, comprising the majority of the workforce. Studies in elderly adults are sparse. Methods In total, 107 subjects were recruited (median age 78; interquartile range [IQR], 58.5–90.5; range, 35–105 years). Factors associated with antibody titer after the third mRNA COVID-19 vaccination were compared between 49 elderly (age ≥80; median, 94; IQR, 86–97; range, 80–105 years) and 58 younger (age ≤79; median, 61; IQR, 46–71; range, 35–79 years) adults. Results Among body mass index (BMI) categories, the group of underweight elderly adults had a lower antibody titer compared to those with normal weight (P <.01 after 1, 3, and 5 months). Elderly adults were less likely to maintain effective antibody titer (≥4160 AU/mL) compared to younger adults: 76% versus 98%, P <.001 after 1 month, and 45% versus 78%, P <.001 after 3 months. Elderly adults who maintained effective antibody titer for 5 months had a higher BMI (22.9 kg/m2 vs 20.1 kg/m2, P =.02), and were less likely to have underweight BMI (0% vs 31%, P =.02) compared to the subjects who failed to maintain effective antibody titer. Conclusions These results highlight the impact of nutritional status and the deleterious effect of underweight BMI on antibody titer and its maintenance among elderly adults following booster mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. 31. Delayed laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy in acute cholecystitis with severe fibrotic adhesions

Abstract

Abstract: Background: Conversion rate to open surgery is higher for patients with acute cholecystitis than in those without acute cholecystitis. We attempted to develop a laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy to decrease this conversion rate. Methods: From 2000 to 2005, laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis was performed in 60 patients (22 women, 38 men). Patients were divided into two groups: group A (2000 to 2002, n = 22) and group B (2003 to 2005, n = 38). When significant difficulty was encountered dissecting the gallbladder from its bed, we incised the gallbladder wall leaving the posterior wall and cauterizing the remnant mucosa (subtotal cholecystectomy, SC-1). When dissection of the gall bladder neck and triangle of Calot was difficult, the neck of the gallbladder was sutured despite clipping (SC-2). Results: Mean duration from onset of symptoms to operation was 55.3 ± 52.0 days. SC-1 was performed in 8 patients in group A and 18 patients in group B. SC-2 was performed in three patients in Group B. Conversion rate was 18.1% (4/22) in group A and 0% (0/38) in group B, compared to 0.4% (1/221) for patients without acute cholecystitis. No complications were associated with ablated gallbladder mucosa. Conclusion: Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy offers safe and effective treatment for acute cholecystitis. The conversion rate in group B is decreased by avoiding hazardous dissection of the cystic duct.

Abstract

An electron energy analyzer based on the retarding electrostatic field generated by a cavity electrode was prototyped, where the designed energy resolution is smaller than 10 meV at acceleration voltages Vo less than 5 kV and a half angle spread θo less than 20 mrad for the incident electron beams with the scanning voltage range of 3 V. Precise energy resolution, however, has not been recognized experimentally because of the difficulties of equipping such a narrow energy spread electron source. This paper describes the principle of the newly developed energy analyzer and shows the obtained energy spectra from a Schottky emitter ZrO/W(100) with a tip of the curvature radius of 1.5 μm, which could highly reproduce the theoretically expected spectra at various emitter temperatures because of its predominantly thermal emission. Abstract

This paper presents the origin and mechanism of a dissolution inhibition effect of a photochemical acid generator (PAG) for a non‐chemically amplified resist based on hexafluoroisopropylalcohol (HFA)‐containing styrene (HFASt) in an alkaline developer. For the photoresist systems consisting of copolymers of HFASt/another p‐substituted St and a sulfonium salt‐type PAG, solubility tests for coating films in the alkaline developer and proton nuclear magnetic resonance analysis and theoretical calculations for mixtures of the monomers and PAG were performed. It was found that p‐substituted St monomers with a highly polar functional group and an electron‐dense aromatic ring were effective in the dissolution inhibition. Since the interaction between p‐substituted St monomers and the cationic part of PAG was well predictable and quantifiable with theoretical calculations, which was consist well with the experimental data, the study method adopted in this study enables rational structural design of the polymers/PAG system that exhibits a high dissolution inhibition effect, which can lead to the development of non‐chemically amplified positive tone‐type resist materials usable for the formation of high‐resolution patterns.
