Shape memory alloy (SMA) wires have extensive use in many areas of the industry nowadays and its development continues reaching new applications as studies progress. This paper proposes a SMA measurement device that uses affordable components, such as the Arduino micro-controller and a LabVIEW programming language interface. With an antagonistic mechanism design, data on temperature, strain and stress is acquired to confirm the measuring capabilities of the full equipped instrument, rendering visualizations of phase transformations and opening way for further development in control and detailed acquisition of shape memory alloy wire properties.

Structural Health Monitoring—SHM—is known as the nondestructive process of online, in service, allowing the systems and structures to monitor their own integrity all along their useful lives. The most important goals in this context are to prevent failures, to increase security, and to reduce maintenance costs. One of the most important available techniques is the so-called impedance-based structural health monitoring, which is the focus of the present chapter. Practical implementations of the technique are described for illustration purposes.

This chapter first introduces the basic definitions and concepts related to smart materials and structures. Then, the underlying physical principles and main operational features of some of the smart materials most widely used in engineering applications are described. The potential of the technology of smart materials and structures for innovative solutions of practical problems is put in evidence by the description of some relevant research studies and engineering applications, with the support of relevant bibliographic references. The concepts introduced in this chapter are further developed in the other chapters of the book.

Due to problems caused by noise in industrial environment and in human daily life, techniques of noise control have received increasing attention from engineers and researchers lately. More recently, the use of piezeletric elements as sensors and/or actuators in noise and vibration control systems has been extensively investigated. The main advantage of the use of such devices is that they can be easily integrated to the mechanical system with little added mass and relatively high control authority. The present paper addresses a technique of active control of sound transmitted through a rectangular, thin, simply supported plate by employing multiple piezeletric patches bonded to the plate’s surface. A harmonic plane wave incident on one side of the plate is considered to be the primary noise source. Aiming at minimizing the noise transmitted to the other side of the plate, bending motion is induced through the piezeletric patches so that the plate behaves as a secondary sound source. Vibrações estruturais são a fonte mais comum dos ruídos aos quais as pessoas estão cotidianamente expostas. Este fenômeno de transmissão frequentemente surge de estruturas que se comportam como placas oscilantes, como as massivamente empregadas em máquinas em geral e aplicações automotivas, aeronáuticas e aeroespaciais. A crescente necessidade desses segmentos terem eficiência energética agrava o problema do ruído, já que dispositivos leves tendem a ser menos silenciosos, especialmente na faixa de baixas frequências. Para atacar esta questão, dispositivos conhecidos como metamateriais acústicos vem sendo desenvolvidos e colocados em uso em contextos de engenharia. Destes, destacam-se os metamateriais acústicos de membrana (MAMs), reconhecidos por sua capacidade de superar a lei das massas e entregar altos níveis de isolamento sonoro com baixa massa e volume adicionados aos sistemas vibroacústicos. O ressonador de membrana decorada (DMR), um conceito específico de MAM, alcança este feito a partir da massa efetiva negativa que apresenta entre seus dois primeiros modos de vibração normais. Várias configurações de DMR já foram investigadas, mas o estado da arte conta ainda com lacunas para aplicações em larga escala. Neste sentido, o presente trabalho de Mestrado tem como objetivo projetar e avaliar um metapainel de DMRs para a atenuação acústica no intervalo entre 178 e 355 Hz a partir de estratégias de modelagem numérica. Para isto, é criada uma metodologia de projeto baseada no modelo de elementos finitos do painel acoplado a um sistema composto de uma cavidade e uma placa radiante, com o nível de potência sonora irradiada para o campo distante sendo obtido a partir de diferentes formulações para estruturas flexíveis. A fim de diminuir o acoplamento vibroacústico com o resto do sistema, um metapainel aperiódico de padrão Penrose é concebido a partir da teoria de tesselação. Para verificar a robustez da solução frente a fontes de incertezas, foram aplicadas variações aleatórias de aspectos construtivos ao metapainel. Dois diferentes empilhamentos também foram simulados. A capacidade de atenuação da estrutura proposta é demonstrada, tendo sido a configuração nominal capaz de produzir perdas por inserção de 12, 26 e 25 dB nos três terços de oitava analisados e um máximo de quase 60 dB no intervalo. A metodologia desenvolvida se mostrou eficiente para o projeto e análise de um atenuador de DMRs. Structural vibrations are the most common source of noise that people are exposed to on a daily basis. This transmission phenomenon often arises from plate-like oscillating structures, such as the ones massively employed in machines in general and automotive, aeronautical and aerospace applications. The growing need for these segments to be energy-efficient aggravates the noise problem, as lightweight devices tend to be less quiet, especially in the low-frequency range. To tackle this issue, devices known as acoustic metamaterials have been developed and put to use in engineering contexts. Of these, acoustic membrane metamaterials (MAMs) stand out, recognized for their capacity to overcome the mass-law and deliver high levels of sound insulation with low mass and volume added to vibroacoustic systems. The decorated membrane resonator (DMR), a specific MAM concept, achieves this feat from the negative effective mass it presents between its first two normal vibration modes. Several DMR configurations have already been investigated, but the state of the art still has gaps for large-scale applications. In this sense, the present Masters work aims at designing and evaluating a DMRs metapanel for acoustic attenuation in the range between 178 and 355 Hz with the use of numerical modeling strategies. For this, a design methodology is created based on the finite element model of the panel coupled to a system composed of a cavity and a radiant plate, with the sound power level radiated to the free field being obtained from different formulations for flexible structures. In order to decrease the vibroacoustic coupling, an aperiodic Penrose metapanel is conceived based on the tesselations theory. To verify the robustness of the solution against sources of uncertainty, random variations of constructive aspects were applied to the metapanel. Two different stacking configurations were also simulated. The attenuation capacity of the proposed structure is demonstrated, with the nominal configuration being capable of producing insertion losses of 12, 26 and 25 dB over the three thirds of the octave analyzed, and a maximum of almost 60 dB in the range. The developed methodology proved to be efficient for the design and analysis of a DMRs attenuator.

CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior This work presents an experimental study of the influence of the axial groove shape of semi-floating ring bearings on the dynamic and thermodynamic behavior of small turbochargers used in the automotive and aeronautical industries. A hot flow test bench using LPG gas for turbocharger tests at different speed and mass flow conditions is used for the development of this study. Seven different turbochargers with semi-floating ring bearings with different axial groove shapes are selected for the evaluation of dynamic and thermodynamic response under different operating conditions, including pre-surge and surge. Each semi-floating ring bearing has in its internal part two end areas to bear the rotor and one middle area for the free flow of the lubricant. The bearings are manufactured by conventional machining processes directly by the turbocharger manufacturer. The electrical discharge machining (EDM) process is used for the exclusive manufacture of grooves, which are: triangular, half-ellipse, quarter-ellipse, quarter-ellipse inverted, rectangular, trapezoidal and circle (or half-moon). The comparative analysis of the thermodynamic behavior is carried out through performance and efficiency tests of compressors and turbine-rotor assemblies at constant speed and mass flow. Temperature, pressure and air and gas mass flow transducers are installed at various points upstream and downstream of the compressor and turbine in the test bench. For the study of rotor dynamics, frequency spectra and diagrams of the journal precession orbits are obtained from the measurement of vibrations at different stationary speeds and constant operating airflows. Waterfall plots are performed on acceleration and deceleration of turbochargers. Accelerometers and displacement transducers (proximity probes) are used to pick up the vibration signals on turbochargers under different turbocharger operating conditions. Synchronous and subsynchronous responses are also obtained and analyzed for each turbocharger for the range of rotational speeds from approximately 0 to 145,000 rpm. Acoustic emission signals are captured under steady-state speed and flows. Several treatments are performed on these data, with different electronic filters and statistical analysis. Correlations are made of the acoustic emission data with the change only in the operating speed, only in the mass flow of air from the compressor, with the pre-surge and surge condition. A preliminary evaluation of the dimensions of the grooves of the analyzed bearings is carried out by means of dimensional metrological analysis before the tests to certify that the amount of lubricant and the effective area of rotor-bearing contact are within the determined in the design. The experimental results obtained allow the creation of important thermodynamic performance maps and dynamic response curves of the seven turbochargers analyzed, providing relevant subsidies for the selection of the most appropriate axial groove shape of the floating ring bearing for a given turbocharger operating condition. Additionally, it is possible to show that acoustic emission data using a bandpass filter between 50 and 100 kHz with kurtosis analysis have strong characteristics for detecting the pre-surge condition in small turbochargers. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo experimental da influência do perfil da ranhura axial de mancais radias hidrodinâmicos semiflutuantes sobre o comportamento dinâmico e termodinâmico em pequenos turbocompressores utilizados nas indústrias automotiva e aeronáutica. Uma bancada de ensaios a quente utilizando gás GLP para testes de turbocompressores capaz de representar diferentes condições de velocidade e vazão mássica é utilizada para o desenvolvimento desse estudo. Sete diferentes turbocompressores com mancais semiflutuantes de diferentes perfis de ranhura axial são selecionados para a avaliação da resposta dinâmica e termodinâmica em diferentes condições de operação, inclusive pré-surge e surge. Cada mancal semiflutuante possui em seu corpo interno duas áreas de apoio do eixo e uma para o fluxo livre do lubrificante e são fabricados por processos de usinagem convencional diretamente pelo fabricante do turbocompressor. É utilizado o processo de eletroerosão de precisão (EDM) para a fabricação exclusiva das ranhuras, sendo elas: triangular, meia elipse, quarto de elipse, quarto de elipse invertido, retangular, trapezoidal e circular (ou "meia lua"). A análise comparativa do comportamento termodinâmico é efetuada por meio de ensaios de desempenho e eficiência dos compressores e dos conjuntos turbina-rotor em velocidade e vazão mássica constantes. Sensores de temperatura, pressão e fluxo mássico de ar e de gás são instalados em diversos pontos à montante e à jusante do compressor e da turbina. Para o estudo de dinâmica de rotores, espectros de frequência e diagramas das órbitas de precessão do munhão são obtidos a partir da medição das vibrações em diferentes velocidades estacionárias e fluxos de ar constantes de operação. Diagramas em cascata (waterfall plots) são realizados em aceleração e desaceleração dos turbocompressores. Acelerômetros e sensores de proximidade sem contato são utilizados para captar os sinais desejados de vibração sobre os turbocompressores sob diferentes condições de operação do turbocompressor. As respostas síncronas e subsíncronas também são obtidas e analisadas para cada turbocompressor para a faixa de velocidades de rotação de, aproximadamente, 0 a 145.000 rpm. Sinais de emissão acústica são captadas nas condições de velocidades e fluxos constante. Diversos tratamentos nesses dados são realizados, com diferentes filtros eletrônicos e análise estatística. São realizadas correlações dos dados de emissão acústica com a mudança apenas da velocidade de operação, apenas do fluxo de massa de ar do compressor, com a situação pré-surge e surge. Uma avaliação preliminar das dimensões das ranhuras dos mancais analisados é efetuada por meio de análise metrológica dimensional antes dos testes para certificar que a quantidade de lubrificante e a área efetiva de contato rotor-mancal estão dentro do determinado em projeto. Os resultados experimentais obtidos permitem a confecção de importantes mapas de desempenho termodinâmico e curvas da resposta dinâmica dos sete turbocompressores analisados, fornecendo subsídios relevantes para a seleção do perfil da ranhura axial do mancal flutuante mais apropriado para uma dada condição de operação do turbocompressor. Adicionalmente, é possível apresentar que os dados de emissão acústica utilizando filtro passa-banda entre 50 e 100 kHz com análise de curtose apresentam fortes características para detecção da situação de pré-surge em pequenos turbocompressores.

The self-excited aeroelastic instability of thin plates or shells in the supersonic regime is called panel flutter, which may cause severe structural failure in aircraft and spacecraft. Thus, a reliable modeling of such phenomenon is crucial for safely predicting the lifespan of aircraft skins. Indeed, aeronautical skins are typically composed of large internally reinforced panels. The presence of the stiffening components subdivides the panel into several cells, which may interact structurally. However, the ample majority of published studies concerning the aeroelastic behavior of shells and plates treats each skin panel as an isolated structure. In this context, the present research project aims to investigate the effects of the structural coupling between the multiple curved panels and to assess the inaccuracies of the single-panel model by systematically comparing its results with those from the current multibay model. Moreover, the curvature effects will also be investigated. To do that, the Mindlin shallow shell theory coupled with the nonlinear von Kármán strains was applied. For the aerodynamic model, the first-order piston theory is applied, which is suitable for high-supersonic flows. The energy equations are discretized through the Finite Element Method, and the resulting aeroelastic equations of motion are solved in the time domain by using a Newmark integration method. The final algorithm is verified and validated through comparison with numerical and analytical solutions from the literature and with the commercial finite element software, ABAQUS. Symmetric and asymmetric composite laminated double cylindrical panels with different curvature ratios were analyzed for the streamwise and cross-stream configurations concerning the supersonic flow direction. Therefore, the effect of curvature, flow direction, and lamination scheme in the pre- and post flutter behavior of curved cylindrical panels were investigated. A instabilidade aeroelástica autoexcitada de placas ou cascas finas no regime supersônico é denominada flutter de painel e é capaz de causar falhas estruturais graves em aeronaves e veículos espaciais. Desse modo, para a previsão segura da vida em fadiga de revestimentos aeroespaciais, é fundamental que sejam realizadas análises confiáveis deste fenômeno. De fato, revestimentos aeronáuticos são tipicamente compostos por grandes painéis reforçados internamente. A presença desses elementos acaba subdividindo o painel em várias células menores capazes de interagir estruturalmente. No entanto, a grande maioria dos trabalhos publicados a respeito do comportamento aeroelástico de cascas e placas trata cada painel como uma estrutura isolada. Nesse contexto, o presente projeto de pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar os efeitos do acoplamento estrutural entre múltiplos painéis curvos e avaliar as imprecisões do modelo de painel isolado através de uma análise comparativa sistemática dos resultados de painéis isolados com o do presente modelo multicélula. Além disso, os efeitos de curvatura também serão investigados. Para tanto, a teoria de Mindlin para cascas rasas será utilizada em conjunto com as deformações não lineares de von Kármán. Para o modelo aerodinâmico, foi utilizada a teoria de primeira ordem do pistão, adequada para escoamentos supersônicos. As equações de energia são discretizadas através do método dos elementos finitos, obtendo-se, então, as equações aeroelásticas do movimento. Essas equações são resolvidas no domínio do tempo através de um método de integração de Newmark. O código final é verificado e validado por meio da comparação com soluções numéricas e analíticas das literatura e com o software comercial de elementos finitos, ABAQUS. Painéis cilíndricos de compósito com laminação simétrica e assimética com diferentes razões de curvatura foram analisados para as configurações streamwise e cross-stream referentes à direção do escoamento supersônico. Portanto, o efeito da curvatura, da direção do fluido e do esquema de laminação no comportamento anterior e posterior ao flutter de painéis curvos cilíndricos foram investigados.

Hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs) arise as a response of the automotive industry to the quest of implementing clean and sustainable propulsion, face to the potential scarcity of fossil fuels. The integration of the electric motor to the powertrain in this sort of vehicles presents acoustic stimuli that elicit new perceptions. The large number of spectral components, as well as the bandwidth of the hybrid electric powertrain noise, pose new challenges to current noise, vibration and harshness approaches. None of the state-of-the-art techniques is able to simultaneously tackle low-, mid- and high-frequency issues, and probably just a handful of them take the auditory perception as a fundamental design criteria. This research proposes a framework for enhancing the sound quality (SQ) of the hybrid electric powertrain noise that is perceived inside the passenger compartment. The proposed method relies on the extensive use of active noise equalizer systems, which are capable of modifying the SQ of harmonic disturbances by means of profiling their magnitude and relative-phase functions. An extension of single-channel active noise equalizers to multichannel environments has been developed and the challenges related to cross-channel interferences tackled, which allows simultaneous active sound profiling for a number of listeners. In addition, as Loudness, Roughness, Sharpness and Tonality are the most relevant SQ metrics for HEVs noise, they have been used as performance metrics in the concurrent optimization analysis that drives the control design method. The proposed method is verified experimentally with realistic hybrid electric powertrain noise, by attaining SQ improvement for either single or multiple locations within a scaled vehicle mock-up. The results show success rates in excess of 90%, which indicate the proposed method is promising, not only for HEVs noise, but also for a variety of periodic disturbances with similar features. Veículos elétricos e híbridos surgem como uma resposta da indústria automotiva ao desafio de se implementarem tecnologias limpas e sustentáveis de propulsão, em função do potencial esgotamento de combustíveis fósseis. A integração do motor elétrico ao trem-de-força neste tipo de veículos apresenta novas sensações auditivas aos passageiros. A grande quantidade de componentes espectrais, bem como a largura de banda que esse tipo de ruído abrange, caracterizam-se como desafios para as atuais abordagens de controle de ruído, vibração e aspereza veicular. Nenhuma das técnicas atuais abrange problemas vibro-acústicos de baixas, médias e altas frequências simultaneamente, ao tanto que poucos métodos encaram esses aspectos do ponto de vista da percepção humana. Esta pesquisa propõe uma metodologia para melhoria da qualidade sonora do ruído gerado por trens de força híbridos, percebido pelos passageiros no interior de veículos. O método proposto baseia-se no uso extensivo de sistemas ativos de equalização de ruído, que se mostram capazes de promover a melhoria da qualidade sonora de distúrbios harmônicos, por meio da manipulação das funções de magnitude e de fase relativa. Uma extensão destes sistemas para ambientes multicanal também foi desenvolvida, na base da solução de desafios relativos às interferências entre canais. Métricas objetivas de qualidade sonora (Loudness, Roughness, Sharpness e Tonality) são utilizadas para se avaliar o desempenho, bem como guiar o processo de otimização concorrente, que é parte da metodologia proposta para o desenvolvimento destes controladores. A verificação das técnicas propostas é realizada por meio de experimentos, usando estímulos auditivos realísticos de trens de força híbridos, que visam promover a melhoria da qualidade sonora em uma ou mais posições no interior da cabine. Os resultados apresentam percentagens de sucesso acima de 90%, o que demonstra que a metodologia proposta é promissora, não somente para controle de ruído de trens-de-força híbridos, mas também quaisquer distúrbios periódicos com características similares.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Nesta tese, uma metodologia simples para encontrar bandas de atenuação robustas é apresentada. Quatro estruturas periódicas diferentes são usadas como exemplos numéricos para modelos infini-tos e finitos. As duas primeiras estão relacionadas às zonas de atenuação criadas para ondas longitudinais utilizando sistemas massa-mola e barras como células unitárias. O método da Matrix de Transferência é usado para modelar a célula unitária. Com este método, é possível obter respostas em frequência, usando um método espectral, e constantes de dispersão, resolvendo um problema de autovalor. Os parâmetros físicos e geométricos mais influentes são determinados pela realização de análises de sensibilidade através de derivadas parciais e diferenças finitas usando um modelo infinito. Para o segundo exemplo, a área de seção transversal de meia célula é considerada como uma variável estocástica representada por uma função densidade de probabilidade com propriedades de desvio específicas para uma análise probabilística. O terceiro exemplo diz respeito às bandas proibidas para ondas de flexão usando células unitárias compostas por vigas. Para este caso, o método clássico de Matriz de Transferência não pode ser usado para obter as respostas de estruturas finitas em baixa frequência devido à presença de matrizes mal condicionadas. Portanto, um método recursivo denominado Matriz de Translação, que evita a multiplicação de matrizes, é usado e a análise probabilística correspondente é realizada usando a espessura de meia célula co-mo variável aleatória. Uma análise experimental também é realizada para este caso, mas considerando o comprimento de meia célula como incerto. O último exemplo é uma treliça periódica considerada com e sem componentes inteligentes. A célula unitária desta estrutura é modelada utilizando o método de elementos finitos e pode apresentar membros passivos e ativos. No entanto, esse tipo de estrutura não possui rupturas de impedância fortes o suficiente para abrir bandas de atenuação, embora haja a presença de subestruturas repetitivas. Em virtude disto, oito cenários são investigados considerando a introdução de massa concentrada em articulações e atuadores piezoelétricos em circuito shunt ressonante que são considerados estocásticos para casos específicos. Para cada modelo estrutural, uma Simulação de Monte Carlo com amostragem por Hipercubo Latino é realizada, as diferenças entre as zonas de atenuação incertas correspondentes aos modelos finitos e infinitos são expostas e a relação com modos localizados é esclarecida. Os resultados levam a concluir que os modelos finitos possuem uma região de atenuação maior do que as regiões equivalentes apresentadas por modelos infinitos considerando parâmetros estocásticos. Em outras palavras, as incertezas entre células vizinhas se compensam e as estruturas periódicas finitas são naturalmente mais robustas. Finalmente, o efeito do aumento do nível de incerteza, variando um coeficiente estocástico, é analisado e o conceito de banda de atenuação robusta é apresentado. In this thesis, a simple methodology to find robust bandgaps is presented. Four different periodic structures are used as numerical examples for infinite and finite models. The first two are related to attenuation zones created for longitudinal waves using spring-mass and stepped rod unit cells. The Transfer Matrix method is used to model the unit cell. With this method, it is possible to obtain the frequency responses, using a spectral method, and dispersion constants, solving an eigenvalue problem. The most influential physical and geometrical parameters are determined by performing partial derivative and finite difference sensitivity analysis through an infinite model. Therein, for the second example, the cross-section area of half-cell is considered as a stochastic variable represented by a probability density function with specific deviation properties for a probabilistic analysis. The third example concerns the bandgaps for flexural waves using stepped beams unit cells. For this case, the classical Transfer Matrix method cannot be used to obtain finite structures response in low frequency because of the presence of ill-conditioned matrices. Therefore, a recursive method termed Translation Matrix, which avoids matrix multiplication, is used and the corresponding probabilistic analysis is performed using the half-cell thickness as a random variable. An experimental analysis is also performed for this case, but considering half-cell length as uncertain. The last example is a periodic truss that is considered with and without smart components. The unit cell of this lattice structure can present passive and active members. As long as the type of unit cell is more complex, the finite element method is used. However, this kind of structure does not have impedance mismatches strong enough to open bandgaps although the presence of repetitive sub-structures. In virtue of this, eight scenarios are investigated considering the introduction of concentrated mass on joints and piezoelectric actuators in resonant shunt circuit which are considered as stochastic for specific cases. For each structure model, a Monte Carlo Simulation with Latin Hyper-cube sampling is carried out, the distinctions between the corresponding uncertain attenuation zones for finite and infinite models are exposed and the relation with localized modes is clarified. These results lead to conclude that the finite models present a larger stop zone considering stochastic parameters than infinite models. In other words, the uncertainties between neighbor cells compensate each other and the finite structures are naturally more robust. Finally, the effect of increasing the uncertainty level, by varying a stochastic coefficient, is analyzed and the concept of robust band gap is presented. Tese (Doutorado)

Esta dissertação visa a modelagem, simulação e controle de um veículo aéreo não tripulado (VANT) do tipo quadricóptero, utilizando-se as técnicas de controle ótimo e controle robusto no espaço de estados. O quadricóptero deve realizar as funções de decolagem, voo em cruzeiro e pouso de maneira autônoma. A dissertação inclui a síntese e análise comparativa entre um observador de estados de ordem plena de Luenberger e um filtro de Kalman. Além disso, um controlador linear quadrático gaussiano e um controlador robusto serão sintetizados e avaliados, procurando-se avaliar qual tem o melhor desempenho nas diversas tarefas do VANT. This dissertation includes the modeling, simulation and control of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle by using optimum control and robust control techniques on the space state. The quadrotor must perform the takeoff, cruise flight and landing in an autonomous way. This report also presents the synthesis and comparative analysis between a Luenberger full order state observer and a Kalman filter. A linear quadratic gaussian controller and a robust controller will be also synthetized and analyzed, to compare which one exhibits the best performance on the UAV tasks.

Absorvedores de vibração são comumente usados em aplicações com intuito de reduzir indesejadas amplitudes de vibração de estruturas e maquinas vibrantes. O conceito de um absorvedor de vibração linear consiste na ideia de projetar um subsistema com frequência de ressonância coincidente com uma dada frequência de interesse, tal que a amplitude de vibração do sistema primário e significativamente reduzida quando comparada a situação original, sem o absorvedor de vibração. Porem, uma deficiência dos absorvedores de vibração lineares típicos e sua estreita faixa de frequência de operação. Para superar essa deficiência, muitas tentativas de solução usando subsistemas não lineares tem sido propostas na literatura, ja que se apropriadamente projetados, eles podem aumentar a faixa de frequência de absorção de vibração e/ou melhorar a redução das amplitudes de vibração do sistema primário. Contudo, a síntese e o projeto de tais absorvedores não lineares não e tão simples e direta como no caso linear. Baseado na geometria de uma topologia proposta e encontrada na literatura, que compreende a inclusão de uma montagem do tipo snap through truss no lugar da mola linear do absorvedor de vibração, este trabalho tem intenção de apresentar um estudo sobre o projeto e otimização de um absorvedor dinâmico de vibrações não linear. Portanto, o efeito dos parâmetros do absorvedor e analisado quanto as perspectivas de redução das amplitudes de vibração do sistema principal como também de aumento da faixa de frequência de operação. A analise paramétrica do absorvedor foi promovida para responder questões sobre as variáveis de projeto, tanto físicas como geométricas. Realizou-se otimização do absorvedor com objetivo de sintoniza-lo a frequência de trabalho desejada, através de busca extensiva e algoritmos genéticos. Os resultados mostram que o absorvedor não linear proposto pode ser mais efetivo que seu correspondente linear em ambos os aspectos, na redução da máxima amplitude de vibração e no aumento da faixa de frequência de absorção. Portanto, apesar da dificuldade inicial de projeto, esse tipo de absorvedor representa uma alternativa interessante na atenuação das amplitudes de vibração ao longo de uma extensa faixa de frequência. Dynamic vibration absorbers are commonly used in several applications in order to reduce undesired vibration amplitudes of vibrating machinery and structures. The concept of a linear vibration absorber is based on the idea of designing a subsystem with a resonance frequency coincident with a given frequency of interest such that the vibration amplitude of the primary system is significantly reduced when compared to the original situation (without the vibration absorber). But one of the known handicaps of typical linear vibration absorbers is their narrow frequency range of operation. To overcome this handicap, a number of tentative solutions have been proposed in the literature using nonlinear subsystems. If properly designed, they could enlarge the frequency range of vibration absorption and/or improve vibration reduction of the primary system. However, the synthesis and design of such nonlinear absorbers are not as straightforward as for their linear counterpart. A proposed design found in the open literature consists of replacing the linear spring of the vibration absorber by a nonlinear snap-through truss. This work aims to present a study on the design and optimization of a nonlinear dynamic vibration absorber based on snap-through absorber geometry. The effect of the absorber parameters was analyzed on both, the primary system vibration amplitude reduction and the frequency range of operation. Parametric analyses of the absorber were carried out to answer questions about the physical and geometric design variables. The absorber optimization was performed in two different ways, by extensive search and genetic algorithms, in order to tune it in the desired working frequency. The results show that the proposed nonlinear vibration absorber may be more effective than its linear counterpart both in terms of maximum vibration amplitude reduction and absorption frequency-range. Therefore, despite the increased design complexities such an absorber is an interesting alterna- tive in attenuating vibration amplitudes over a wide frequency range.

Ao empregar a teoria de controle para a dinâmica de uma estrutura, é possível projetar um observador potencialmente complexo que a partir da leitura de apenas um sensor estime o estado do sistema e determine os modos de vibração presentes. Este trabalho, no entanto, estuda o uso de filtros modais em controle de vibrações, com a motivação de que essa estratégia dependa de menos componentes eletrônicos. O objetivo é encontrar um filtro modal que possua alto desempenho em malha fechada mesmo com um número reduzido de sensores. Primeiramente foi desenvolvido o modelo dinâmico do sistema em malha aberta, com posterior otimização do filtro modal por meio do método do ponto interior. Depois, foi desenvolvido o modelo dinâmico do sistema em malha fechada. A seguir, um algoritmo genético otimizou o sistema de controle de vibrações seguindo duas metodologias. A primeira considera apenas as posições dos sensores como variáveis de otimização, enquanto a segunda leva em consideração não só as posições dos sensores como também os ganhos do filtro modal e o ganho de retroalimentação de velocidade. Os resultados do estudo do sistema em malha aberta mostram que se trata se um problema de otimização não-convexa, mas todas as tentativas levaram a crer que o mínimo global tenha sido encontrado para a função objetivo proposta, baseada no desvio quadrático da função de resposta em frequência do filtro modal com relação a uma referência pré-estabelecida. Os resultados do estudo do sistema em malha fechada mostram que considerar as posições e os ganhos como variáveis de otimização levam a um filtro modal mais conveniente do que o que é obtido levando-se em consideração apenas as posições. Finalmente, a partir da interpretação dos resultados, conclui-se que mesmo com um filtro modal composto por 5 sensores é possível ainda desenvolver um sistema de controle de vibrações que seja de fase mínima. Apesar de existir spillover de observação do ponto de vista de um filtro modal, nota-se que todos os modos estão em fase, o que acaba por ser até benéfico para o sistema de controle de vibrações. The control systems theory may be applied to structural dynamics in order to design a potentially complex observer which is able to estimate the system\'s state from the readings of a sole sensor. This work, though, focused on the application of modal filters in vibration control based on the premise that this strategy will require a simpler hardware. The main target consists of finding a modal filter which can deliver high performance in vibration control despite being composed of a reduced number of sensors. In the first step, a dynamic model of a modal filter on a cantilever beam was developed, followed by an optimization carried on with the interior-point method. Then, the dynamic model of the closed-loop cantilever beam was developed aftwerwards. However, this time a genetic algorithm was used as the optimization method instead, with two methodologies being employed. While the first one considered only the placement of the sensors, the second one also takes into consideration the modal filter gains and the negative velocity feedback gain. The results yielded by the open-loop cantilever beam analysis showed that it is a non-convex optimization problem. However, all of the attempts support the belief that the global minimum has been found in the sense of the proposed objective function, which was based on the quadratic error between the frequency response function (FRF) of the modal filter and an idealized FRF used as reference. The results yielded by the closed-loop system optimization showed that it is more convenient to consider as optimization variables not only the placement of the sensors, but also their gains and the negative velocity feedback gain. Finally, after pondering over the obtained results, it has been concluded that the observation spillover resulting from a modal filter composed of a reduced number of sensors may be turned to the vibration control system\'s favour by means of optimization. The minimal-phase modal filter composed of 5 sensors found in this work stands out as the most notable example in this work, being able to guarantee stability for the first 12 modes since all of them are in-phase.

A aeroelasticidade estuda a interação mútua entre os efeitos aerodinâmicos e estruturais. É sabido que essa relação muitas vezes se comporta de maneira não linear, causando diversos problemas, tais como flutter, oscilações em ciclo limite, bifurcações e caos. Tais fenômenos são difíceis de serem diagnosticados, podendo causar problemas graves à estrutura das aeronaves e também inviabilizar as suas operações. Dentre as principais fontes de não linearidades em sistemas aeroelásticos, pode-se citar as de origem aerodinâmica e estrutural. As de origem estrutural, por sua vez, podem ter caráter distribuído ou concentrado. Sabe-se que os efeitos estruturais concentrados denominados enrijecimento e folga são os de maior impacto na aeroelasticidade não linear. Desse modo, o objetivo desse trabalho é estudar a interação não linear entre duas não linearidades estruturais, ou seja, o enrijecimento associado à rigidez em torção e a folga presente nas articulações das superfícies de controle de seções típicas aeroelásticas. Experimentos em túnel de vento são realizados utilizando um dispositivo que permite variar a intensidade do efeito de enrijecimento e do tamanho da folga na articulação da superfície de comando. O modelo numérico de seção típica aeroelástica também é utilizado e validado com dados experimentais. Análises por meio de diagramas de bifurcação de Hopf e técnicas baseadas em espectros de potência são utilizadas. Todas as respostas aeroelásticas foram caracterizadas através de ferramentas de análise nos domínios do tempo e da frequência, como técnica de reconstrução de espaço de estados e os espectros de alta ordem (HOS), os quais são importantes na identificação dos tipos de acoplamentos não lineares. Resultados indicam que a combinação dos efeitos de enrijecimento e folga são responsáveis pelo comportamento subcrítico das bifurcações de Hopf e que a intensidade do enrijecimento tem influência direta nas amplitudes de ciclo limite. Aeroelasticity is the field of engineering that deals with the mutual interaction between the aerodynamic and structural dynamics effects. It is known that this relationship often shows nonlinear behavior, causing various problems such as flutter, limit cycle oscillations, bifurcations and chaos. Such phenomena are difficult to predict and can cause serious problems to the aircraft structure and also they can jeopardize their operations. The unsteady aerodynamic and structural dynamics provide the main sources of nonlinearities in aeroelastic systems. Structural nonlinearities can be treated as distributed or concentrated effects. It is know that the nonlinear concentrated structural effects referred as hardening and freeplay have a significant impact on nonlinear aeroelasticity. The objective of this work is to analyze an aeroelastic system under the influence of combined structural nonlinearities, i.e., the hardening nonlinearity in the pitch airfoil motion and the freeplay nonlinearity in the control surface hinge. Wind tunnel experiments are carried out using one device that allows to vary the intensity of the hardening effect and the size of the freeplay gap in the control surface hinge. The numerical model of the typical aeroelastic section is also used and validated with experimental data. All aeroelastic responses are characterized by analytical tools in time and frequency domains. It was used the state space reconstruction technique and the higher order spectral analysis (HOS) to identify types of nonlinear couplings. The results indicate that the combination of hardening and freeplay effects are responsible for inducing the subcritical behavior on the Hopf bifurcations and that the intensity of the stiffness has a direct influence on the limit cycle amplitudes.

Motivado pela crescente demanda por fontes energéticas alternativas, este trabalho discute o uso do efeito piezelétrico para geração de energia a partir de vibrações estruturais, cujo caráter ubíquo as têm colocado em posição de destaque dentre outras fontes renováveis. O processo conhecido por piezoelectric energy harvesting ou scavenging é estudado utilizando-se de múltiplos graus de liberdade para maximização da energia gerada e aumento da faixa de frequência útil do gerador, permitindo melhores resultados em aplicações sujeitas a excitações aleatórias de larga banda de frequência. Diretamente relacionada ao custo do dispositivo, e por isso, à sua viabilidade comercial, a eficiência dos harvesters em função da quantidade de material piezelétrico utilizado também é amplamente discutida. Para o desenvolvimento do tema são realizadas simulações numéricas em MATLAB, primeiramente para modelos de parâmetros concentrados, com análises de sensibilidade da geração de energia em relação a características mecânicas, bem como disposição e propriedades dos elementos piezelétricos em soluções com dois e três graus de liberdade. Usando modelos de parâmetros distribuídos os estudos são replicados a uma solução construtiva do tipo viga \"L\", com validação do modelo matemático e das proposições levantadas através de ensaios em laboratório usando um protótipo do gerador. Ao final é feita uma análise crítica relativa ao piezoelectric energy harvesting através de geradores de múltiplos graus de liberdade, em que são confrontados e discutidos os resultados teóricos e experimentais obtidos. Motivated by the increasing demand on alternative energy resources, this study discusses the usage of the piezoelectric effect for energy generation from structural vibrations, which stands out among other renewable energy resources by its ubiquitous essence. The process known as piezoelectric energy harvesting or scavenging is evaluated using multiple degrees-of-freedom to maximize the energy generated and broaden the useful frequency bandwidth of the harvester, enabling better outcomes in applications subjected to random broadband excitations. Due to its direct relation to costs, and therefore to market feasibility, the harvester efficiency based on the piezoelectric material quantity is widely discussed. Numeric simulation using MATLAB are performed for the subject development, firstly using lumped parameter models to conduct generation sensitivity analysis on the mechanical characteristics, piezoelectric properties and allocation of two and three degrees-of-freedom solutions. Using distributed parameter models the study is replicated to an L-shaped configuration, with validation of the theoretical model and the brought forward proposals through laboratory experiments using an energy harvester prototype. At the end, a critical analysis on piezoelectric energy harvesting through multiple degrees-of-freedom is conducted, comparing and discussing the theoretical and experimental results.

The modeling, analysis and experimental verification of a two-degree-of-freedom typical aeroelastic section with superelastic shape memory alloy springs are presented. The focus is to investigate the effects of the phase transformation of the shape memory alloy springs on the flutter and post-flutter behaviors of the typical section. The shape memory alloy phase transformation kinetics is described by a modified version of well-known phenomenological models. The shape memory alloy spring model is based on classical spring design (with the pure shear assumption) and modified to account for the nonlinear effects of phase transformation. The cross-section of the shape memory alloy wire is represented by a linear radial distribution of shear strain and nonlinear radial distributions of shear stress and martensitic fraction. The equations of motion of a linear typical section are modified to include the shape memory alloy springs. A linear unsteady aerodynamic model is employed to determine the aerodynamic loads. The proposed model is cast into state-space representation and solved with a Runge-Kutta method. It is numerically and experimentally shown that the phase transformation of shape memory alloy springs can be effectively exploited to enhance the aeroelastic behavior of a typical section by replacing unstable flutter oscillations by stable oscillations of acceptable amplitudes over a range of airflow speeds, providing a useful method of passive aeroelastic control. Since the modified aeroelastic behavior is attractive for wind energy harvesting purposes, electromechanical coupling is also modeled in the plunge degree-of-freedom along with a resistive load in the electrical domain for electrical power estimation. The exploitation of the shape memory alloy phase transformation is more attractive for airfoil-based wind energy harvesting performance than the use of typical concentrated nonlinearities (e.g., hardening steel) in terms of enhanced electrical power output. A modelagem, análise e verificação experimental de uma seção típica aeroelástica com dois graus de liberdade e molas com memória de forma superelásticas são apresentadas. O foco é investigar os efeitos da histerese pseudoelástica das molas com memória de forma nos comportamentos de flutter e pós-flutter da seção típica. A cinética das transformações de fase nas molas com memória de forma é descrita por uma versão modificada de modelos fenomenológicos amplamente conhecidos. O modelo de molas helicoidais com memória de forma é baseado em teoria clássica de molas (com a hipótese de cisalhamento puro) e modificado para representar os efeitos não lineares de transformação de fase. A seção transversal do fio da mola com memória de forma é representada por uma distribuição radial e linear de deformações de cisalhamento e por distribuições radiais e não lineares de tensões cisalhantes e de frações martensíticas. As equações de movimento de uma seção típica linear são modificadas para incluir as molas com memória de forma. Um modelo aerodinâmico linear não estacionário é utilizado para se determinar as cargas aerodinâmicas. O modelo proposto é representado em espaço de estados e resolvido com um método Runge-Kutta. Mostra-se, numérica e experimentalmente, que a histerese pseudoelástica de molas com memória de forma pode ser efetivamente explorada para melhorar o comportamento aeroelástico de uma seção típica ao transformar oscilações instáveis de flutter em oscilações estáveis e de amplitudes aceitáveis em uma faixa de velocidades do escoamento, provendo um método útil de controle aeroelástico passivo. Como o comportamento aeroelástico modificado (pela histerese pseudoelástica) é atrativo para a coleta de energia do escoamento, um acoplamento eletromecânico é modelado no grau de liberdade de deslocamento linear, juntamente com uma carga resistiva no domínio elétrico do problema para se estimar a potência elétrica gerada. A exploração da histerese pseudoelástica das molas com memória de forma é mais atrativa para a performance da coleta aeroelástica de energia do que o uso de não linearidades concentradas típicas (como o enrijecimento não linear do aço) em termos de melhoria na potência elétrica gerada.

O uso de materiais piezelétricos no desenvolvimento de dispositivos para o aproveitamento de energia provinda de vibrações mecânicas, Energy Harvesting, tem sido largamente estudado na última década. Materiais piezelétricos podem ser encontrados na forma de finas camadas ou pastilhas, sendo facilmente integradas a estruturas sem aumento significativo de massa. A conversão de energia mecânica em energia elétrica se dá graças ao acoplamento eletromecânico dos materiais piezelétricos. A maioria das publicações encontradas na literatura exploram o uso de dispositivos eletromecânicos ressonantes, sintonizados na frequência de operação da estrutura, maximizando assim, a energia elétrica de saída dada uma certa condição de operação. O desempenho desses dispositivos ressonantes para coletar e armazenar energia é altamente dependente da adequada sintonização da sua frequência de ressonância com a frequência de operação do sistema/estrutura. Este trabalho apresenta o projeto, otimização e análise de incertezas de um dispositivo coletor/armazenador de energia que consiste em uma placa sob duas condições de contorno, engastada-livre (EL) e deslizante-livre (DL), com massa sísmica e materiais piezelétricos conectados a um circuito shunt. Um modelo em elementos finitos de placa laminada piezelétrica conectada a circuitos R e RL é utilizado combinando as teorias de camada equivalente e deformação de cisalhamento de primeira ordem. A disposição/quantidade de material piezelétrico bem como a massa sísmica acoplados à estrutura foram otimizadas utilizando-se um Algoritmo Genético, levando em conta análises mecânica (modelo mecânico, geometria, peso) e elétrica (modelo elétrico, circuito armazenador). Além disso, o efeito de incertezas dos parâmetros dielétrico e piezelétrico do transdutor, e da indutância elétrica ligada em série ao circuito coletor/armazenador de energia foi estudado. Os resultados indicam que a inclusão de uma indutância sintética ao circuito pode melhorar a coleta de energia em uma banda de frequência e, ainda, que a otimização geométrica pode reduzir a quantidade de material piezelétrico sem no entanto diminuir significativamente a energia gerada. The use of piezoelectric materials in the development of devices to harvest energy from mechanical vibrations (Energy Harvesting) has been widely studied in the last decade. Piezoelectric materials can be found in the form of thin layers or patches easily integrated into structures without significant mass increase. The conversion of mechanical energy into electric power is provided by the electromechanical coupling of piezoelectric materials. Most publications in the literature explore the use of resonant electromechanical devices, tuned to the operating frequency of the host structure, thus maximizing the power output given a certain operating condition. The performance of these resonant devices to harvest and store energy is highly dependent on the proper tuning of its resonance frequency with the operation frequency of the system/structure. This work presents a design, optimization and uncertainty analysis of energy harvester device consisting of a plate with tip mass and piezoelectric materials connected to shunt circuits. Two boundary conditions are used for the plate, cantilever (EL) and sliding-free (DL). A coupled finite element model with R and RL circuits, combining equivalent single layer and first order shear deformation theories, was used. The distribution and volume of piezoelectric material and the tip mass coupled to the structure were optimized using a Genetic Algorithm, accounting for both mechanical (mechanical model, geometry, weight) and electric (electric model, storer circuit) analyses. Furthermore, the effect of uncertainties of transducer dielectric and piezoelectric constants and electric inductance connected in series with harvesting circuit was studied. The results indicate that the inclusion of a synthetic inductance can improve energy harvesting performance over a frequency range and also that the geometric optimization may reduce the piezoelectric material volume without diminishing significantly the harvested energy.

As estruturas aeronáuticas estão sujeitas a uma variedade de fenômenos aeroelásticos que podem comprometer o desempenho das aeronaves. Com o desenvolvimento de novos materiais, essas estruturas têm se tornado mais leves e flexíveis, e portanto mais sujeitas a problemas aeroelásticos, tais como flutter e buffeting. Pesquisadores têm trabalhado em soluções alternativas para resolver esses problemas aeroelásticos indesejáveis. Uma dessas soluções envolve o conceito de estruturas inteligentes, que são aquelas que apresentam atuadores e sensores incorporados, integrado com sistema de controle e processamento de sinal, possibilitando a adaptação do sistema estrutural a mudanças nas condições operacionais. Modelos matemáticos que incorporam elementos atuadores e sensores são de grande importância nas fases preliminares de análise de estruturas aeronáuticas inteligentes. Neste contexto, métodos de modelagem são necessários para capturar a ação da dinâmica estrutural e de carga aerodinâmica. O presente trabalho apresenta o estudo de um controlador difuso ativo para resposta aeroelástica de uma asa inteligente com atuadores piezelétricos incorporados. Características não-lineares da resposta aeroelástica são analisadas para condições críticas de flutter. É utilizado o método de elementos finitos para o modelo estrutural não-linear e o método de malha de vórtices para o modelo aerodinâmico não-estacionário. Aeronautical structures are submitted to a variety of aeroelastic phenomena that may compromise its performance. With this development of new materials, aeronautical structures have become lighter, more flexible, and more subjected to aeroelastic problems, such as flutter and buffeting. Researchers have been working on alternatives to solve these undesired aeroelastic problems, as the recent concept of smart or intelligent structures. Smart structures are those that present embedded sensors and actuators, integrated with control systems and signal processing, to enable the adaptation of the structural system to changes in the operational conditions. Mathematical models that incorporate actuator elements or sensors are of great importance in preliminary phases of analysis of smart aeronautical structures. In this context, modeling methods are necessary to capture dynamic-structural behavior and unsteady aerodynamic loading. The present work is the study of an active fuzzy controller for aeroelastic response of a smart wing with embedded piezoelectric actuators. Nonlinear characteristics of aeroelastic responses are analyzed for critical flutter conditions. The finite elements method for the nonlinear structural model and vortex-lattice method for the unsteady aerodynamic model has been used.

Esta dissertação apresenta uma análise numérica do controle de vibrações estruturais através de cerâmicas piezoelétricas em extensão e em cisalhamento conectadas a circuitos ativo-passivos compostos por resistência, indutância e fonte de tensão. Para tal, um modelo de elementos finitos de vigas sanduíche com três camadas elásticas e/ou piezoelétricas foi desenvolvido. Realizou-se também uma modelagem dos componentes do circuito elétrico e seu acoplamento à estrutura gerando assim uma equação de movimento acoplada para a estrutura com elementos piezoelétricos conectados aos circuitos elétricos. Uma análise harmônica das equações obtidas foi realizada para se obter uma avaliação preliminar dos efeitos causados pelos componentes elétricos do circuito na estrutura. Observou-se que os elementos passivos do circuito, resistência e indutância, tem não somente um efeito de absorvedor dinâmico de vibrações mas, também, promovem uma amplificação da autoridade de controle no caso de se atuar através da fonte de tensão. Usando a metodologia tradicional de projeto de absorvedores dinâmicos de vibrações, derivou-se expressões para os valores de resistência e indutância de modo a maximizar o desempenho passivo do sistema. Uma análise numérica do desempenho na redução das amplitudes de vibração em um viga engastada-livre com uma cerâmica piezoelétrica em extensão ou cisalhamento foi realizada mostrando bons resultados. Em seguida, uma análise da autoridade de controle para estas estruturas foi realizada visando a implementação de um controle híbrido ativo-passivo. A parcela ativa do controle foi obtida usando-se uma estratégia de controle por retroalimentação ótima do tipo linear quadratic regulator para calcular a tensão aplicada ao circuito. Uma comparação entre os resultados mostra que o controle híbrido ativo-passivo é sempre superior aos controles puramente ativos ou passivo para os dois casos estudados, com cerâmicas piezoelétricas em extensão e cisalhamento. This work presents a numerical analysis of the structural vibration control using piezoelectric materials in extension and shear mode connected to active-passive electric circuits composed of the resistance, inductance and voltage source. For that, a finite element model for sandwich beams with three elastic or piezoelectric layers was developed. A modeling of the electric circuit dynamics and its coupling to the structure with piezoelectric elements was also done. A harmonic analysis of the resulting equations was performed to yield a preliminary evaluation of the effects caused by the electric circuit components on the structure. It was observed that the passive circuit components not only lead to a dynamic vibration absorber effect but also to an amplification of the control authority in case of actuation using the voltage source. Using the standard methodology for the design of dynamic vibration absorbers, expressions were derived for the resistance and inductance values that optimize the passive vibration control performance of the system. A numerical analysis of the passive vibration control was performed for cantilever beams with extension and shear piezoelectric ceramics showing satisfactory results. Then, an analysis of the control authority was carried out for the same structures aiming at an active-passive vibration control. The active control was achieved using a linear quadratic regulator optimal feedback strategy to evaluate the voltage applied to the circuit. A comparison between the obtained results show that hybrid active-passive control is always superior to the purely active or purely passive control for both cases studied, with extension and shear piezoelectric ceramics.

Este trabalho apresenta e compara alguns meios para o estudo do comportamento dinâmico de uma lavadora de roupas de eixo vertical durante o processo de extração de água das roupas, também conhecido como centrifugação. Os três métodos utilizados para estudar o comportamento dinâmico de uma lavadora de roupas de eixo vertical foram: analítico, experimental e simulação através de multicorpos. O interesse nesta etapa é devido ao fato dos problemas de vibração de uma lavadora ocorrerem principalmente durante a centrifugação. A modelagem de uma lavadora de roupas durante a etapa de centrifugação permite a obtenção de seu comportamento dinâmico bem como de suas principais características. Um outro tópico estudado neste trabalho foi o fenômeno de deslocamento da lavadora, um dos principais motivos de reclamação dos usuários de lavadoras de roupa automáticas. This work presents and compares some ways to study the dynamic behavior of a vertical axis washing machine during the water extraction process, also called spinning stage. The three methodologies used to study the dynamic behavior of a vertical axis washing machine area: analytical, experimental and simulation using Multi Body System. The interest in this stage is due to the fact that the main vibration problems of an automatic washing machine occur in the spinning cycle. Since the unbalance force that causes the vibration problems is centrifugal in nature, this makes intuitive sense as the rotational speed of the basket is the largest during the spin extraction cycle. Thus, modeling the washing machine during the spinning cycle allow us to get its dynamic behavior as well as the main characteristics of this behavior. Another topic studied in this work was the walking phenomenon, the main complaint of the users.

Quando ocorre uma colisão, o comportamento estrutural de veículos, componentes ou sistemas mecânicos é analisado através de um parâmetro chamado crashworthiness, conceituado como a capacidade ou habilidade de uma estrutura, ou parte dela, de absorver energia cinética (resultante de impacto) e manter o colapso sob controle, mantendo a integridade no espaço do(s) ocupante(s). Este parâmetro pode também ser determinado para outro tipo de estruturas, como por exemplo, dispositivos de armazenamento de material (containers). Esta dissertação apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre crashworthiness e o comportamento de estruturas quando submetidas a ensaios de impacto. Apresentam-se conceitos, histórico, evolução e principais áreas envolvidas. Destaca-se a utilização de programas de modelamento por elementos finitos na simulação e análise de colisão. Simula-se e analisa-se o impacto de modelos simplificados de container, típicos para o armazenamento de material radioativo, em queda livre contra uma superfície rígida, utilizando o software de elementos finitos ANSYS/LS-DYNA numa análise dinâmica explícita, apresentando-se resultados e conclusões e sugestões para trabalhos futuros. The structural behavior of a vehicle or a mechanical system during collision is a very complex event. To analyze this behavior it's necessary to submit them to crash tests. These tests are made for the determination of the structure behavior and measure the kinetic energy absorption capability of a structure produced during a collision. This parameter is known as crashworthiness. In this work it is made a bibliographical review about crashworthiness and the behavior of structures under impact tests. Also, concepts, historical, evolution and the main involved areas are presented. The use of software's of finite elements in modeling and analyze of impact tests its highlighted. The drop test of a model of container, typical to storage of radioactive waste, is performed using the software of finite element ANSYS/LS-DYNA in an explicit analysis. Results, conclusions and comments for futures works are presented.
