Using appropriate QCD finite energy sum rules, we discuss the influence of an external magnetic field and baryonic density on the axial-vector coupling constant $g_{A}$. This scenario corresponds to a magnetar environment. We found that $g_{A}$ decreases both as function of the magnetic field strength and the baryonic density. It turns out that at the nuclear density $\rho _{0}$ the axial-vector coupling takes the value $g_{A}^{*} \approx 0.92$. Although $g_{A}$ decreases in general with the magnetic field intensity, $g_{A}^{*}$ does not change in a relevant way with the magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. The nucleon axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field, and in dense nuclear environments, to emulate nuclear matter in magnetars. For this purpose we use QCD finite energy sum rules for two-current and three-current correlators, the former involving nucleon-nucleon correlators and the latter involving proton-axial-neutron currents. As a result, the axial-vector coupling constant decreases both with baryon density as well as with magnetic field. The axial-vector coupling evaluated with baryon density near the nuclear density $\rho_0$ leads to $g_A^*\approx 0.92$. In the presence of magnetic fields $g_A$ decreases in general, but $g_A^*$ does not show significant changes., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Minor corrections and one reference added. In this work we present a model system built out of artificially layered materials, allowing us to understand the interrelation of magnetic phases with that of the metallic-insulating phase at long length-scales, and enabling new strategies for the design and control of materials in devices. The artificial model system consists of superlattices made of SmNiO$_3$ and NdNiO$_3$ layers -- two members of the fascinating rare earth nickelate family, having different metal-to-insulator and magnetic transition temperatures. By combining two complementary techniques -- resonant elastic x-ray scattering and muon spin relaxation -- we show how the magnetic order evolves, in this complex multicomponent system, as a function of temperature and superlattice periodicity. We demonstrate that the length scale of the coupling between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases is longer than that of the electronic metal-insulator phase transition -- despite being subsidiary to it. This can be explained via a Landau theory -- where the bulk magnetic energy plus a gradient cost between magnetic and non magnetic phases are considered. These results provide a clear understanding of the coupling of magnetic transitions in systems sharing identical order parameters.

The field of oxide spintronics can strongly benefit from the establishment of robust ferromagnetic insulators with near room-temperature Curie temperature. Here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of atomically-precise epitaxially-strained thin films of the double perovskite La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ (LNMO) grown by off-axis radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. We find that the films retain both a strong insulating behavior and a bulk-like Curie temperature in the order of 280 K, nearly independently from epitaxial strain conditions. These results suggest a prospective implementation of LNMO films in multi-layer device architectures where a high-temperature ferromagnetic insulating state is a prerequisite., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

11. Magnetic field dependence of nucleon parameters from QCD sum rules

Finite energy QCD sum rules involving nucleon current correlators are used to determine several QCD and hadronic parameters in the presence of an external, uniform, large magnetic field. The continuum hadronic threshold $s_0$, nucleon mass $m_N$, current-nucleon coupling $\lambda_N$, transverse velocity $v_\perp$, the spin polarization condensate $\langle\bar q\sigma_{12} q\rangle$, and the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate $\chi_q$, are obtained for the case of protons and neutrons. Due to the magnetic field, and charge asymmetry of light quarks up and down, all the obtained quantities evolve differently with the magnetic field, for each nucleon or quark flavor. With this approach it is possible to obtain the evolution of the above parameters up to a magnetic field strength $eB < 1.4$ GeV$^2$., Comment: Note added in proof. Accepted for publication in Phys. One of the advantages of the finite energy sum rules is the fact that every operator in the operator product expansion series can be selected individually by the use of an appropriate kernel function which removes other operator poles. This characteristic is maintained by QCD systems in the presence of external homogeneous magnetic field, providing interesting information about the magnetic evolution of QCD and hadronic parameters. We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_\mu/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_\mu^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$\sigma$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics., Comment: 196 pages, 103 figures, version published in Phys. We use resonant soft X-ray diffraction to track the photo-induced dynamics of the antiferromagnetic structure in a NdNiO$_{3}$ thin film. Femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 0.61 eV, resonant with electron transfer between long-bond and short-bond nickel sites, are used to excite the material and drive an ultrafast insulator-metal transition. Polarization sensitive soft X-ray diffraction, resonant to the nickel L$_{3}$-edge, then probes the evolution of the underlying magnetic spiral as a function of time delay with 80 picosecond time resolution. By modelling the azimuthal dependence of the scattered intensity for different linear X-ray polarizations, we benchmark the changes of the local magnetic moments and the spin alignment. The measured changes are consistent with a reduction of the long-bond site magnetic moments and an alignment of the spins towards a more collinear structure at early time delays.

16. Up- and down-quark masses from QCD sum rules

The QCD up- and down-quark masses are determined from an optimized QCD Finite Energy Sum Rule (FESR) involving the correlator of axial-vector current divergences. In the QCD sector this correlator is known to five loop order in perturbative QCD (PQCD), together with non-perturbative corrections from the quark and gluon condensates. This FESR is designed to reduce considerably the systematic uncertainties arising from the hadronic spectral function. The determination is done in the framework of both fixed order and contour improved perturbation theory. Results from the latter, involving far less systematic uncertainties, are: $\bar{m}_u (2\, \mbox{GeV}) = (2.6 \, \pm \, 0.4) \, {\mbox{MeV}}$, $\bar{m}_d (2\, \mbox{GeV}) = (5.3 \, \pm \, 0.4) \, {\mbox{MeV}}$, and the sum $\bar{m}_{ud} \equiv (\bar{m}_u \, + \, \bar{m}_d)/2$, is $\bar{m}_{ud}({ 2 \,\mbox{GeV}}) =( 3.9 \, \pm \, 0.3 \,) {\mbox{MeV}}$., Comment: A Mathematica^(C) file pertaining to numerical evaluations is attached as Ancillary

We study the one-loop gluon polarization tensor at zero and finite temperature in the presence of a magnetic field, to extract the thermo-magnetic evolution of the strong coupling $\alpha_s$. We analyze four distinct regimes, to wit, the small and large field cases, both at zero and at high temperature. From a renormalization group analysis we show that at zero temperature, either for small or large magnetic fields, and for a fixed transferred momentum $Q^2$, $\alpha_s$ grows with the field strength with respect to its vacuum value. However, at high temperature and also for a fixed value of $Q^2$ we find two different cases: When the magnetic field is even larger than the squared temperature, $\alpha_s$ also grows with the field strength. On the contrary, when the squared temperature is larger than the magnetic field, a turnover behavior occurs and $\alpha_s$ decreases with the field strength. This thermo-magnetic behavior of $\alpha_s$ can help explain the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon found by lattice QCD calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, typo in eq.(13) fixed, conclusions unchanged

We compute the gluon polarization tensor in a thermo-magnetic environment in the strong magnetic field limit at zero and high temperature. The magnetic field effects are introduced using Schwinger's proper time method. Thermal effects are computed in the HTL approximation. At zero temperature, we reproduce the well-known result whereby for a non-vanishing quark mass, the polarization tensor reduces to the parallel structure and its coefficient develops an imaginary part corresponding to the threshold for quark-antiquark pair production. This coefficient is infrared finite and simplifies considerably when the quark mass vanishes. Keeping always the field strength as the largest energy scale, in the high temperature regime we analyze two complementary hierarchies of scales: $q^2\ll m_f^2\ll T^2$ and $m_f^2\ll q^2\ll T^2$. In the latter, we show that the polarization tensor is infrared finite as $m_f$ goes to zero. - Abstract
Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

- Abstract
Background: Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods: This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results: 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3b) were higher in the HP group (P < 0.001). 30-day mortality was higher in HP patients (13.7%), especially in case of bowel perforation and diffused peritonitis. 1-year follow-up showed no differences on ostomy reversal rate between HP and RPA. (P = 0.127). A backward likelihood logistic regression model showed that RPA was preferred in younger patients, having low ASA score (≤ 3), in case of large bowel obstruction, absence of colonic ischemia, longer time from admission to surgery, operating early at the day working hours, by a surgeon who performed more than 50 colorectal resections. Conclusions: After 100 years since the first Hartmann’s procedure, HP remains the most common treatment for left-sided colorectal emergencies. Treatment’s choice depends on patient characteristics, the time of surgery and the experience of the surgeon. RPA should be considered as the gold standard for surgery, with HP being an exception.

We compute the production of prompt photons and the $v_2$ harmonic coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions induced by gluon fusion in the presence of an intense magnetic field, during the early stages of the reaction. The calculations take into account several parameters which are relevant to the description of the experimental transverse momentum distribution, and elliptic flow for RHIC and LHC energies. The main imput is the strength of the magnetic field which varies in magnitude from 1 to 3 times the pion mass squared, and allows the gluon fusion that otherwise is forbidden in the absence of the field. The high gluon occupation number and the value of the saturation scale also play an important role in our calculation, as well as a flow velocity and geometrical factors. A new QCD sum rule determination of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$, is proposed. This approach combines data on $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation into hadrons, perturbative QCD and lattice QCD results for the first derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at zero momentum transfer, $\Pi_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$. The idea is based on the observation that, in the relevant kinematic domain, the integration kernel $K(s)$, entering the formula relating $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$ to $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data, behaves like $1/s$ times a very smooth function of $s$, the squared energy. We find an expression for $a_{\mu}$ in terms of $\Pi_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$, which can be calculated in lattice QCD. Using recent lattice results we find a good approximation for $a_{\mu}^{\rm hvp}$, but the precision is not yet sufficient to resolve the discrepancy between the $R(s)$ data-based results and the experimentally measured value., Comment: 14 pages, added some clarifying text and two references, removed typos, results unchanged. The leading order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, $a^{HAD}_\mu$, is determined entirely in the framework of QCD. The result in the light-quark sector, in units of $10^{-10}$, is $a^{HAD}_\mu|_{uds} =686 \pm 26$, and in the heavy-quark sector $a^{HAD}_\mu|_{c} =14.4 \pm 0.1$, and $a^{HAD}_\mu|_{b} =0.29 \pm 0.01$, resulting in $a^{HAD}_\mu = 701 \pm 26$. The main uncertainty is due to the current lattice QCD value of the first and second derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at the origin. We compute photon production at early times in semi-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions from non-equilibrium gluon fusion induced by a magnetic field. The calculation accounts for the main features of the collision at these early times, namely, the intense magnetic field and the high gluon occupation number. The gluon fusion channel is made possible by the magnetic field and would otherwise be forbidden due to charge conjugation invariance. Thus, the photon yield from this process is an excess over calculations without magnetic field effects. We compare this excess to the difference between PHENIX data and recent hydrodynamic calculations for the photon transverse momentum distribution and elliptic flow coefficient $v_2$. We show that with reasonable values for the saturation scale and magnetic field strength, the calculation helps to better describe the experimental results obtained at RHIC energies for the lowest part of the transverse photon momentum., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Also included are determinations in the light-quark vector and axial-vector channels, allowing to analyse the Weinberg sum rules, and predict the dimuon spectrum in heavy ion collisions in the region of the rho-meson. An exhaustive number of QCD finite energy sum rules for $\tau$-decay together with the latest updated ALEPH data is used to test the assumption of global duality. Typical checks are the absence of the dimension $d=2$ condensate, the equality of the gluon condensate extracted from vector or axial vector spectral functions, the Weinberg sum rules, the chiral condensates of dimensions $d=6$ and $d=8$, as well as the extraction of some low-energy parameters of chiral perturbation theory. Suitable pinched linear integration kernels are introduced in the sum rules in order to suppress potential quark-hadron duality violations and experimental errors. Hadronic spectral functions measured by the ALEPH collaboration in the vector and axial-vector channels are used to study potential quark-hadron duality violations (DV). This is done entirely in the framework of pinched kernel finite energy sum rules (FESR), i.e. in a model independent fashion. The kinematical range of the ALEPH data is effectively extended up to $s = 10\; {\mbox{GeV}^2}$ by using an appropriate kernel, and assuming that in this region the spectral functions are given by perturbative QCD. Support for this assumption is obtained by using $e^+ e^-$ annihilation data in the vector channel. 33. Determination of the temperature dependence of the up- down-quark mass in QCD

The temperature dependence of the sum of the QCD up- and down-quark masses, $(m_u + m_d)$ and the pion decay constant, $f_\pi$, are determined from two thermal finite energy QCD sum rules for the pseudoscalar-current correlator. This quark-mass remains mostly constant for temperatures well below the critical temperature for deconfinement/chiral-symmetry restoration. As this critical temperature is approached, the quark-mass increases sharply with increasing temperature. This increase is far more pronounced if the temperature dependence of the pion mass (determined independently from other methods) is taken into account. An approach is discussed on the determination of the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly, $a_\mu^{HAD}$, based entirely on theory. This method makes no use of $e^+ e^-$ annihilation data, a likely source of the current discrepancy between theory and experiment beyond the $3\, \sigma$ level. What this method requires is essentially knowledge of the first derivative of the vector current correlator at zero-momentum. In the heavy-quark sector this is obtained from the well known heavy quark expansion in perturbative QCD, leading to values of $a_\mu^{HAD}$ in the charm- and bottom-quark region which were fully confirmed by later lattice QCD (LQCD) results. In the light-quark sector, using recent preliminary LQCD results for the first derivative of the vector current correlator at zero-momentum leads to the value $a_\mu^{HAD} = (729 - 871)\, \times\,10^{-10}$, which is significantly larger than values obtained from using $e^+ e^-$ data. A separate approach based on the operator product expansion (OPE), and designed to quench the contribution of these data, reduces the discrepancy by at least 40\%. We study the thermo-magnetic properties of the strong coupling constant G and quark mass M entering the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. For this purpose, we compute the quark condensate and compare it to lattice QCD (LQCD) results to extract the behavior of G and M as functions of the magnetic field strength and temperature. We find that at zero temperature, where the LQCD condensate is found to monotonically increase with the field strength, M also increases whereas G remains approximately constant. However, for temperatures above the chiral/deconfinement phase transitions, where the LQCD condensate is found to monotonically decrease with increasing field, M and G also decrease monotonically. For finite temperatures, below the transition temperature, we find that both G and M initially grow and then decrease with increasing field strength. To study possible consequences of the extracted temperature and magnetic field dependence of G and M, we compute the pressure and compare to LQCD results, finding an excellent qualitative agreement. In particular, we show that the transverse pressure, as a function of the field strength, is always negative for temperatures below the transition temperature whereas it starts off being positive and then becomes negative for temperatures above the transition temperature, also in agreement with LQCD results. We also show that for the longitudinal pressure to agree with LQCD calculations, the system should be described as a diamagnet. We argue that the turnover of M and G as functions of temperature and field strength is a key element that drives the behavior of the quark condensate going across the transition temperature and provides clues for a better understanding of the inverse magnetic catalysis phenomenon., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. 40. Tau-decay hadronic spectral functions: probing quark-hadron duality

The vector and axial-vector ALEPH hadronic spectral functions from $\tau$-decay are used to probe potential quark-hadron duality violations (DV). This is done in the framework of finite energy QCD sum rules (FESR). A pinched integration kernel is introduced in the FESR in order to (a) quench potential duality violations on the real axis in the complex squared energy $s$-plane, and (b) effectively extend the analysis well beyond the kinematical $\tau$-decay end-point where there is no longer data, i.e.\ in the range $s = 3 - 10 \,{\mbox{GeV}}^2$. In the vector channel this procedure is supplemented with actual data from $e^+ e^-$-annihilation into hadrons, above the tau-decay kinematical end-point, with results fully supporting this extension. Very good agreement is obtained between data and two specific pinched FESR. Results from this analysis are confronted with those from a specific model of DV. As the sum rules are well satisfied in both cases within experimental errors, we conclude that possible DV must be buried under the experimental uncertainties. In other words, there seems to be no need for explicit models of DV in this case. 41. Inverse magnetic catalysis from the properties of the QCD coupling in a magnetic field

We compute the vacuum one-loop quark-gluon vertex correction at zero temperature in the presence of a magnetic field. From the vertex function we extract the effective quark-gluon coupling and show that it grows with increasing magnetic field strength. The effect is due to a subtle competition between the color charge associated to gluons and the color charge associated to quarks, the former being larger than the latter. In contrast, at high temperature the effective thermo-magnetic coupling results exclusively from the contribution of the color charge associated to quarks. This produces a decrease of the coupling with increasing field strength. We interpret the results in terms of a geometrical effect whereby the magnetic field induces, on average, a closer distance between the (electrically charged) quarks and antiquarks. At high temperature, since the effective coupling is proportional only to the color charge associated to quarks, such proximity with increasing field strength makes the effective coupling decrease due to asymptotic freedom. In turn, this leads to a decreasing quark condensate. In contrast, at zero temperature both the effective strong coupling and the quark condensate increase with increasing magnetic field. This is due to the color charge associated to gluons dominating over that associated to quarks, with both having the opposite sign. Thus, the gluons induce a kind of screening of the quark color charge, in spite of the quark-antiquark proximity. The QCD phase diagram in the temperature versus quark chemical potential plane is studied in the presence of a magnetic field, using the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. It is shown that the decrease of the couplings with increasing field strength obtained in this model leads to the critical temperature for the phase transition to decrease with increasing field intensity (inverse magnetic catalysis). This happens provided that plasma screening is properly accounted for. It is also found that with increasing field strength the location of the critical end point (CEP) in the phase diagram moves toward lower values of the critical quark chemical potential and larger values of the critical temperature. In addition, the CEP approaches the temperature axis for large values of the magnetic field. We argue that a similar behavior is to be expected in QCD, since the physical impact of the magnetic field, regardless of strength, is to produce a spatial dimension reduction, whereby virtual quark-antiquark pairs are closer on average and thus, the strength of their interaction decreases due to asymptotic freedom., Comment: Minor typos and one affiliation corrected

43. Quark deconfinement and gluon condensate in a weak magnetic field

We study QCD finite energy sum rules (FESR) for the axial-vector current correlator in the presence of a magnetic field, in the weak field limit and at zero temperature. We find that the perturbative QCD as well as the hadronic contribution to the sum rules get explicit magnetic field-dependent corrections and that these in turn induce a magnetic field dependence on the deconfinement phenomenological parameter s_0 and on the gluon condensate. The leading corrections turn out to be quadratic in the field strength. We find from the dimension d=2 first FESR that the magnetic field dependence of s_0 is proportional to the absolute value of the light-quark condensate. Hence, it increases with increasing field strength. This implies that the parameters describing chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement behave similarly as functions of the magnetic filed. Thus, at zero temperature the magnetic field is a catalysing agent of both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. From the dimension d=4 second FESR we obtain the behavior of the gluon condensate in the presence of the external magnetic field.
