Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We find that the wind spectral lines weaken at higher luminosities, most likely due to an increasing ionization parameter as previously found in a few similar sources. Instead, the velocity is anticorrelated with the luminosity, which is opposite to the trend observed in the NLS1 IRAS 13224-3809. Furthermore, the detection of the emission lines, which are not observed in IRAS 13224-3809, indicates a wind with a larger opening angle in 1H 0707-495, presumably due to a higher accretion rate. The emitting gas is found to remain broadly constant with the luminosity. We describe the variability of the wind with a scenario where the strong radiation extends the launch radius outwards and shields the outer emitting gas, similarly to super-Eddington compact objects, although other possible explanations are discussed. M82 X-2 is the first pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX) discovered. The luminosity of these extreme pulsars, if isotropic, implies an extreme mass transfer rate. An alternative is to assume a much lower mass transfer rate, but with an apparent luminosity boosted by geometrical beaming. Only an independent measurement of the mass transfer rate can help discriminate between these two scenarios. In this Paper, we follow the orbit of the neutron star for seven years, measure the decay of the orbit ($\dot{P}_{orb}/{P}_{orb}\approx-8\cdot10^{-6}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$), and argue that this orbital decay is driven by extreme mass transfer of more than 150 times the mass transfer limit set by the Eddington luminosity. If this is true, the mass available to the accretor is more than enough to justify its luminosity, with no need for beaming. We present the first high signal-to-noise broadband X-ray spectrum of the radio-quiet type-2 Seyfert ESO 033-G002, combining data from $XMM$-$Newton$ and $NuSTAR$. The nuclear X-ray spectrum is complex, showing evidence for both neutral and ionised absorption, as well as reflection from both the accretion disc and more distant material, but our broadband coverage allows us to disentangle all of these different components. The total neutral column during this epoch is $N_{\rm{H}} \sim 5-6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, consistent with the optical classification of ESO 033-G002 as a type-2 Seyfert but not so large as to prevent us from robustly determining the properties of the innermost accretion flow. The ionised absorption - dominated by lines from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI - reveals a moderately rapid outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 5400$ km s$^{-1}$) which has a column comparable to the neutral absorption. We find the disc reflection from the innermost regions to be extreme, with a reflection fraction of $R_{\rm{frac}} \sim 5$. This requires strong gravitational lightbending and, in turn, both an extremely compact corona (within $\sim$2 $R_{\rm{G}}$ of the black hole) and a rapidly rotating black hole ($a^* > 0.96$). Despite this tight size constraint, with a temperature of $kT_{\rm{e}} = 40-70$ keV the X-ray corona in ESO 033-G002 appears similar to other AGN in terms of its placement in the compactness-temperature plane, consistent with sitting close to the limit determined by runaway pair production. Finally, combining X-ray spectroscopy, timing and updated optical spectroscopy, we also estimate the mass of the black hole to be $\log[M_{\rm{BH}} / M_{\odot}] \sim 7.0 - 7.5$., 15 pages, 8 figures; published in MNRAS

SS433 is the only Galactic binary system known to persistently accrete at highly super-critical (or hyper-critical) rates, similar to those in tidal disruption events, and likely needed to explain the rapid growth of those very high redshift quasars containing massive SMBHs. Probing the inner regions of SS433 in the X-rays is crucial to understanding this system, and super-critical accretion in general, but is highly challenging due to obscuration by the surrounding wind, driven from the accretion flow. NuSTAR observed SS433 in the hard X-ray band across multiple phases of its 162 day super-orbital precession period. Spectral-timing tools allow us to infer that the hard X-ray emission from the inner regions is likely being scattered towards us by the walls of the wind-cone. By comparing to numerical models, we determine an intrinsic X-ray luminosity of $\ge$ 2$\times$10$^{37}$ erg/s and that, if viewed face on, we would infer an apparent luminosity of $>$ 1$\times$10$^{39}$ erg/s, confirming SS433's long-suspected nature as an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We present the discovery of a narrow, $\sim 100$s lag due to atomic processes occurring in outflowing material travelling at least 0.14-0.29c, which matches absorption lines seen in ULXs and -- in the future -- will allow us to map a super-critical outflow for the first time., 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present XMM-Newton X-ray observations of nine confirmed lensed quasars at $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ identified by the Gaia Gravitational Lens program. Eight systems are strongly detected, with 0.3--8.0 keV fluxes $F_{0.3-8.0} \gtrsim 5 \times 10^{-14}\ {\rm erg}\ {\rm cm}^{-2}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Modeling the X-ray spectra with an absorbed power law, we derive power law photon indices and 2--10 keV luminosities for the eight detected quasars. In addition to presenting sample properties for larger quasar population studies and for use in planning for future caustic crossing events, we also identify three quasars of interest: a quasar that shows evidence of flux variability from previous ROSAT observations, the most closely-separated individual lensed sources resolved by XMM-Newton, and one of the X-ray brightest quasars known at $z>3$. We present an analysis of the NuSTAR and Swift spectra of the black hole candidate MAXI J1813-095 in a failed-transition outburst in 2018. The NuSTAR observations show evidence of reflected emission from the inner region of the accretion disc. By modelling the reflection component in the spectra, we find a disc inner radius of $R_{\rm in}, 9 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

M51 ULX7 is among a small group of known ultraluminous X-ray pulsars (ULXP). The neutron star powering the source has a spin period of 2.8s, orbits its companion star with a period of 2 days, and a super-orbital period of 38 days is evident in its X-ray lightcurve. Here we present NuSTAR and XMM-Newton data on the source from 2019 obtained when the source was near its peak brightness. We detect the pulsations, having spun up at a rate of 3$\pm0.5\times10^{-10}$ s s$^{-1}$ since they were previously detected in 2018. The data also provide the first high-quality broadband spectrum of the source. We find it to be very similar to that of other ULXPs, with two disk-like components, and a high energy tail. When combined with XMM-Newton data obtained in 2018, we explore the evolution of the spectral components with super-orbital phase, finding that the luminosity of the hotter component drives the super-orbital flux modulation. The inclination the disk components appear to change with phase, which may support the idea that these super-orbital periods are caused by disk precession. We also reexamine the super-orbital period with 3 years of Swift/XRT monitoring, finding that the period is variable, increasing from 38.2$\pm0.5$ days in 2018--2019 to 44.2$\pm0.9$ days in 2020--2021, which rules out alternative explanations for the super-orbital period., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a detailed analysis of the spectral properties of the black hole transient GRS 1716-249, based on the archival Swift and NuSTAR observations taken during the outburst of this source in 2016-2017. The first six NuSTAR observations show that the source is in a canonical hard state, where the spectrum is dominated by a power-law continuum. The seventh NuSTAR observation is taken during the intermediate state where both a disc thermal component and a power-law continuum are shown. All of our observations show a broad emission line feature in the iron band and a Compton hump above 10 keV. We model the broad band spectra using a high density disc reflection model, where the soft X-ray emission in the hard state is interpreted as part of the disc reflection component. This model enables us to constrain the disc density parameter of GRS 1716-249 in the range of $10^{19}$-$10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. We only obtain an upper limit of the inner disc radius using high density disc reflection spectroscopy and the results indicate either a non-truncated disc or a slightly truncated disc with $R_{\rm in}, 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present a detailed spectral analysis of the joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the Seyfert 1.5 Galaxy ESO 362-G18. The broadband ($0.3\mbox{--}79$ keV) spectrum shows the presence of a power-law continuum with a soft excess below $2$ keV, iron K$\alpha$ emission ($\sim 6.4$ keV), and a Compton hump (peaking at $\sim 20$ keV). We find that the soft excess can be modeled by two different possible scenarios: a warm ($kT_\mathrm{e}\sim0.2$ keV) and optically thick ($\tau\sim34$) Comptonizing corona; or with relativistically-blurred reflection off a high-density ($\log{[n_\mathrm{e}/\mathrm{cm}^{-3}]}>18.3$) inner disk. These two models cannot be easily distinguished solely from their fit statistics. However, the low temperature ($kT_\mathrm{e}\sim20$ keV) and the thick optical depth ($\tau\sim5$) of the hot corona required by the warm corona scenario are uncommon for AGNs. We also fit a 'hybrid' model, which includes both disk reflection and a warm corona. Unsurprisingly, as this is the most complex of the models considered, this provides the best fit, and more reasonable coronal parameters. In this case, the majority of the soft excess flux arises in the warm corona component. However, based on recent simulations of warm coronae, it is not clear whether such a structure can really exist at the low accretion rates relevant for ESO 362-G18 ($\dot{m}\sim0.015$). This may therefore argue in favor of a scenario in which the soft excess is instead dominated by the relativistic reflection. Based on this model, we find that the data would require a compact hot corona ($h\sim3\,R_\mathrm{Horizon}$) around a highly spinning ($a_\star>0.927$) black hole., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by ApJ

KUG 1141+371 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy that shows a simultaneous flux increase in the optical and UV bands in the past decade. For instance, the latest Swift observation in 2019 shows that the UVW2 flux of the AGN in KUG 1141+371 has increased by over one order of magnitude since 2009. Meanwhile, the soft X-ray flux of KUG 1141+371 also shows a steady increase by one order of magnitude since 2007. The significant multi-wavelength luminosity change is likely due to a boost of mass accretion rate from approximately 0.6% of the Eddington limit to 3.2%, assuming a black hole mass of $10^{8}M_{\odot}$. In this work, we conduct detailed multi-epoch X-ray spectral analysis focusing on the variability of the X-ray continuum emission and the puzzling soft excess emission. In addition, our SED models also suggest a simultaneous increase of disc temperature and a decreasing inner disc radius along with the increasing accretion rate. We present a detailed analysis of the spectral properties of the Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0419-577, based on the archival XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and simultaneous Swift observations taken between 2002-2015. All the observations show a broad emission line feature at the iron band. We demonstrate that the broad band spectral variability at different levels can be explained by the combination of light-bending effects in the vicinity of the central black hole plus a thin warm absorber. We obtain a black hole spin of a > 0.98 by fitting the multi-epoch spectra with the relativistic disc reflection model. 1H0419-577 is accreting at 40% of its Eddington limit and its X-ray band shows the hardest powerlaw continuum in the highest flux state, which was previously more commonly seen in AGNs with a low accretion rate (e.g. $L_{\rm X} /L_{\rm Edd} < 10^{-2}$). The NuSTAR observation shows a cool coronal temperature of $kT=30^{+22}_{-7}$keV in the high flux state., Accepted by MNRAS

From Swift monitoring of a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we found a transient X-ray obscuration event in Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3227, and thus triggered our joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations to study this event. Here in the first paper of our series we present the broadband continuum modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) for NGC 3227, extending from near infrared (NIR) to hard X-rays. We use our new spectra taken with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/COS in 2019, together with archival unobscured XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST/STIS data, in order to disentangle various spectral components of NGC 3227 and recover the underlying continuum. We find the observed NIR-optical-UV continuum is explained well by an accretion disk blackbody component (Tmax = 10 eV), which is internally reddened by E(B-V) = 0.45 with a Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) extinction law. We derive the inner radius (12 Rg) and the accretion rate (0.1 solar mass per year) of the disk by modelling the thermal disk emission. The internal reddening in NGC 3227 is most likely associated with outflows from the dusty AGN torus. In addition, an unreddened continuum component is also evident, which likely arises from scattered radiation, associated with the extended narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 3227. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) continuum, and the 'soft X-ray excess', can be explained with a 'warm Comptonisation' component. The hard X-rays are consistent with a power-law and a neutral reflection component. The intrinsic bolometric luminosity of the AGN in NGC 3227 is about 2.2e+43 erg/s in 2019, corresponding to 3% Eddington luminosity. Our continuum modelling of the new triggered data of NGC 3227 requires the presence of a new obscuring gas with column density NH = 5e+22 cm^-2, partially covering the X-ray source (Cf = 0.6)., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 11 pages, 7 figures

We present results for the first observed outburst from the transient X-ray binary source MAXI J0637-430. This study is based on eight observations from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and six observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-Ray Telescope (Swift/XRT) collected from 2019 November 19 to 2020 April 26 as the 3-79 keV source flux declined from 8.2e-10 to 1.4e-12 erg/cm^2/s. We see the source transition from a soft state with a strong disk-blackbody component to a hard state dominated by a power-law or thermal Comptonization component. NuSTAR provides the first reported coverage of MAXI J0637-430 above 10 keV, and these broadband spectra show that a two-component model does not provide an adequate description of the soft state spectrum. As such, we test whether blackbody emission from the plunging region could explain the excess emission. As an alternative, we test a reflection model that includes a physical Comptonization continuum. Finally, we also test a spectral component based on reflection of a blackbody illumination spectrum, which can be interpreted as a simple approximation to the reflection produced by returning disk radiation due to the bending of light by the strong gravity of the black hole. We report the discovery of a third ULX in NGC 925 (ULX-3), detected in November 2017 by Chandra at a luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (7.8\pm0.8)\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Examination of archival data for NGC 925 reveals that ULX-3 was detected by Swift at a similarly high luminosity in 2011, as well as by XMM-Newton in January 2017 at a much lower luminosity of $L_{\rm X} = (3.8\pm0.5)\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. With an additional Chandra non-detection in 2005, this object demonstrates a high dynamic range of flux of factor >26. In its high-luminosity detections, ULX-3 exhibits a hard power-law spectrum with $\Gamma=1.6\pm0.1$, whereas the XMM-Newton detection is slightly softer, with $\Gamma=1.8^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ and also well-fitted with a broadened disc model. The long-term light curve is sparsely covered and could be consistent either with the propeller effect or with a large-amplitude superorbital period, both of which are seen in ULXs, in particular those with neutron star accretors. Further systematic monitoring of ULX-3 will allow us to determine the mechanism by which ULX-3 undergoes its extreme variability and to better understand the accretion processes of ULXs., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Swift J1858.6-0814 was discovered by Swift-BAT on October 25, 2018. Here we report on the first follow-up NuSTAR observation of the source, which shows variability spanning two orders of magnitude in count rate on timescales of ~10-100 s. The power-spectrum of the source does not show any quasi-periodic oscillations or periodicity, but has a large fractional rms amplitude of 147%$\pm3$%, exhibiting a number of large flares throughout the observation. The hardness ratio (defined as $R_{10-79 \rm keV}/R_{3-10 \rm keV}$) of the flares tends to be soft, while the source spans a range of hardness ratios during non-flaring periods. The X-ray spectrum of the source shows strong reflection features, which become more narrow and peaked during the non-flaring intervals. We fit an absorbed relativistic reflection model to the source spectra to place physical constraints on the system. Most notably, we find that the source exhibits a large and varying intrinsic absorbing column density ($N_{\rm H}=1.4-4.2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). This large intrinsic absorption is further supported by the energy spectra extracted from two flares observed simultaneously by NuSTAR and NICER. We find that the inner accretion disk of the source has a low inclination, $i0.0$. Lastly, we compare the properties of Swift J1858.6$-$0814 to those of V404 Cygni and V4641 Sgr, which both show rapid flaring and a strong and variable absorption., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

M82 hosts two well-known ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). X-1, an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidate, and X-2, an ultraluminous X-ray pulsar (ULXP). Here we present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of both sources based on ten observations made simultaneously with Chandra and NuSTAR. Chandra provides the high spatial resolution to resolve the crowded field in the 0.5--8 keV band, and NuSTAR provides the sensitive hard X-ray spectral data, extending the bandpass of our study above 10 keV. The observations, taken in the period 2015--2016, cover a period of flaring from X-1, allowing us to study the spectral evolution of this source with luminosity. During four of these observations, X-2 was found to be at a low flux level, allowing an unambiguous view of the emission from X-1. We find that the broadband X-ray emission from X-1 is consistent with that seen in other ULXs observed in detail with NuSTAR, with a spectrum that includes a broadened disk-like component and a high-energy tail. We find that the luminosity of the disk scales with inner disk temperature as L~T^-3/2 contrary to expectations of a standard accretion disk and previous results. These findings rule out a thermal state for sub-Eddington accretion and therefore do not support M82 X-1 as an IMBH candidate. We also find evidence that the neutral column density of the material in the line of sight increases with L$_X$, perhaps due to an increased mass outflow with accretion rate. For X-2, we do not find any significant spectral evolution, but we find the spectral parameters of the phase-averaged broadband emission are consistent with the pulsed emission at the highest X-ray luminosities., In press at ApJ

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are extragalactic X-ray emitters located off-centre of their host galaxy and with a luminosity in excess of a few 1039 erg s−1, if emitted isotropically1,2. The discovery of periodic modulation revealed that in some ULXs the accreting compact object is a neutron star3–7, indicating luminosities substantially above their Eddington limit. The most extreme object in this respect is NGC 5907 ULX-1 (ULX1), with a peak luminosity that is 500 times its Eddington limit. During a Chandra observation to probe a low state of ULX1, we detected diffuse X-ray emission at the position of ULX1. Its diameter is 2.7 ± 1.0 arcsec and contains 25 photons, none below 0.8 keV. We interpret this extended structure as an expanding nebula powered by the wind of ULX1. Its diameter of about 200 pc, characteristic energy of ~1.9 keV and luminosity of ~2 × 1038 erg s−1 imply a mechanical power of 1.3 × 1041 erg s−1 and an age of ~7 × 104 yr. This interpretation suggests that a genuinely super-Eddington regime can be sustained for timescales much longer than the spin-up time of the neutron star powering the system. As the mechanical power from a single ULX nebula can rival the injection rate of cosmic rays of an entire galaxy8, ULX nebulae could be important cosmic ray accelerators9. Diffuse X-ray emission is detected around an ultraluminous X-ray source, interpreted as a wind-powered expanding nebula. Its energetics suggests that a super-Eddington regime can be longer than the spin-up time of the central neutron star.

We present results from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the new black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1631-479 at two epochs during its 2018-2019 outburst, which caught the source in a disk dominant state and a power-law dominant state. Strong relativistic disk reflection features are clearly detected, displaying significant variations in the shape and strength of the broad iron emission line between the two states. Spectral modeling of the reflection spectra reveals that the inner radius of the optically-thick accretion disk evolves from $0.94$. Given that the bolometric luminosity is similar in the two states, our results indicate that the disk truncation observed in MAXI J1631-479 in the power-law dominant state is unlikely to be driven by a global variation in the accretion rate. We propose that it may instead arise from local instabilities in the inner edge of the accretion disk at high accretion rates. In addition, we find an absorption feature in the spectra centered at $7.33\pm0.03$ keV during the disk dominant state, which is evidence for a rare case that an extremely fast disk wind ($v_{\rm out}=0.067^{+0.001}_{-0.004}~c$) is observed in a low-inclination black hole binary, with the viewing angle of $29\pm1^{\circ}$ as determined by the reflection modeling., 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

X-ray reverberation echoes are assumed to be produced in the strongly distorted spacetime around accreting supermassive black holes. This signal allows us to spatially map the geometry of the inner accretion flow - a region which cannot yet be spatially resolved by any telescope - and provides a direct measure of the black hole mass and spin. The reverberation timescale is set by the light travel path between the direct emission from a hot X-ray corona and the reprocessed emission from the inner edge of the accretion disc. However, there is an inherent degeneracy in the reverberation signal between black hole mass, inner disc radius and height of the illuminating corona above the disc. Here, we use a long X-ray observation of the highly-variable active galaxy, IRAS 13224-3809, to track the reverberation signal as the system evolves on timescales of a day. With the inclusion of all the relativistic effects, modelling reveals that the height of the X-ray corona increases with increasing luminosity, providing a dynamic view of the inner accretion region. This simultaneous modelling allows us to break the inherent degeneracies and obtain an independent timing-based estimate for the mass and spin of the black hole. The uncertainty on black hole mass is comparable to the leading optical reverberation method, making X-ray reverberation a powerful technique, particularly for sources with low optical variability., Comment: Accepted Nat. Hercules X-1 is one of the best studied highly magnetised neutron star X-ray binaries with a wealth of archival data. We present the discovery of an ionised wind in its X-ray spectrum when the source is in the high state. The wind detection is statistically significant in most of the XMM-Newton observations, with velocities ranging from 200 to 1000 km/s. Observed features in the iron K band can be explained by both wind absorption or by a forest of iron emission lines. However, we also detect nitrogen, oxygen and neon absorption lines at the same systematic velocity in the high-resolution RGS grating spectra. The wind must be launched from the accretion disc, and could be the progenitor of the UV absorption features observed at comparable velocities, but the latter likely originate at significantly larger distances from the compact object. We find strong correlations between the ionisation level of the outflowing material and the ionising luminosity as well as the super-orbital phase. If the luminosity is driving the correlation, the wind could be launched by a combination of Compton heating and radiation pressure. If instead the super-orbital phase is the driver for the variations, the observations are likely scanning the wind at different heights above the warped accretion disc. If this is the case, we can estimate the wind mass outflow rate, corrected for the limited launching solid angle, to be roughly 70% of the mass accretion rate., Accepted to MNRAS. 23 pages, 16 figures and 7 tables

M82 X-2 is the first pulsating ultraluminous X-ray source (PULX)to be identified. Since the discovery in 2014, NuSTAR has observed the M82 field 15 times throughout 2015 and 2016. In this paper, we report the results of pulsation searches in all these datasets, and find only one new detection. This new detection allows us to refine the orbital period of the source and measure an average spin down rate between 2014 and 2016 of 5x10^-11 Hz/s, which is in contrast to the strong spin up seen during the 2014 observations and represent the first detection of spin down in a PULX system. Thanks to the improved orbital solution allowed by this new detection, we are also able to detect pulsations in additional segments of the original 2014 dataset. We find a glitch superimposed on the very strong and variable spin-up already reported, the first positive glitch identified in a PULX system. We present results from NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the new black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 at low accretion rates (below 1% of the Eddington luminosity). We detect a narrow Fe K$\alpha$ emission line, in contrast to the broad and asymmetric Fe K$\alpha$ line profiles commonly present in black hole binaries at high accretion rates. The narrow line, with weak relativistic broadening, indicates that the Fe K$\alpha$ line is produced at a large disk radius. Fitting with disk reflection models assuming standard disk emissivity finds a large disk truncation radius (a few tens to a few hundreds of gravitational radii, depending on the disk inclination). In addition, we detect a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) varying in frequency between $11.6\pm0.2$~mHz and $2.8\pm0.1$~mHz. The very low QPO frequencies suggest a large size for the optically-thin Comptonization region according to the Lense-Thirring precession model, supporting that the accretion disk recedes from the ISCO and is replaced by advection-dominated accretion flow at low accretion rates. We present results from modeling the broadband X-ray spectrum of the Type 1 AGN 2MASX J193013.80+341049.5 using NuSTAR, Swift and archival XMM-Newton observations. We find this source to be highly X-ray obscured, with column densities exceeding 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ across all epochs of X-ray observations, spanning an 8 year period. However, the source exhibits prominent broad optical emission lines, consistent with an unobscured Type 1 AGN classification. We fit the X-ray spectra with both phenomenological reflection models and physically-motivated torus models to model the X-ray absorption. We examine the spectral energy distribution of this source and investigate some possible scenarios to explain the mismatch between X-ray and optical classifications. We compare the ratio of reddening to X-ray absorbing column density ($E_{B-V}/N_{H}$) and find that 2MASX J193013.80+341049.5 likely has a much lower dust-to-gas ratio relative to the Galactic ISM, suggesting that the Broad Line Region (BLR) itself could provide the source of extra X-ray obscuration, being composed of low-ionization, dust-free gas., 13 pages, 9 figures. Ultraluminous pulsars are a definite proof that persistent super-Eddington accretion occurs in nature. They support the scenario according to which most Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are super-Eddington accretors of stellar mass rather than sub-Eddington intermediate mass black holes. An important prediction of theories of supercritical accretion is the existence of powerful outflows of moderately ionized gas at mildly relativistic speeds. In practice, the spectral resolution of X-ray gratings such as RGS onboard XMM-Newton is required to resolve their observational signatures in ULXs. Using RGS, outflows have been discovered in the spectra of 3 ULXs (none of which are currently known to be pulsars). Most recently, the fourth ultraluminous pulsar was discovered in NGC 300. Here we report detection of an ultrafast outflow (UFO) in the X-ray spectrum of the object, with a significance of more than 3{\sigma}, during one of the two simultaneous observations of the source by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR in December 2016. The outflow has a projected velocity of 65000 km/s (0.22c) and a high ionisation factor with a log value of 3.9. This is the first direct evidence for a UFO in a neutron star ULX and also the first time that this its evidence in a ULX spectrum is seen in both soft and hard X-ray data simultaneously. We find no evidence of the UFO during the other observation of the object, which could be explained by either clumpy nature of the absorber or a slight change in our viewing angle of the accretion flow., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We present a high density disc reflection spectral analysis of a sample of 17 Seyfert 1 galaxies to study the inner disc densities at different black hole mass scales and accretion rates. All the available XMM-Newton observations in the archive are used. OM observations in the optical/UV band are used to estimate their accretion rates. We find that 65% of sources in our sample show a disc density significantly higher than 1e15 cm^{-3}, which was assumed in previous reflection-based spectral analyses. The best-fit disc densities show an anti-correlation with black hole mass and mass accretion rate. High density disc reflection model can successfully explain the soft excess emission and significantly reduce inferred iron abundances. Conditions in a black hole outburst The binary system V404 Cygni consists of a red giant star orbiting a black hole. In 2015, a surge of accretion by the black hole caused the surrounding plasma to brighten suddenly for the first time since 1989, briefly becoming the brightest x-ray source in the sky. Dallilar et al. combined observations from radio, infrared, optical, and x-ray telescopes taken during the outburst. They compared how fast the flux decayed at each wavelength, which allowed them to constrain the size of the emitting region, determine that the plasma within it cooled through synchrotron radiation, and measure the magnetic field around the black hole. Ultraluminous X-ray sources are non-nuclear point sources exceeding the Eddington luminosity of a 10 Solar mass black hole. Modern consensus for a majority of the ULX population is that they are powered by stellar-mass black holes or neutron stars accreting well above the Eddington limit. Theoretical models of super-Eddington accretion predict existence of powerful outflows of moderately ionised gas at mildly relativistic velocities. So far, these winds have been found in 3 systems: NGC 1313 X-1, NGC 5408 X-1, NGC 55 ULX. In this work, we create a sample of all ULXs with usable archival high resolution X-ray data, with 10 sources in total, in which we aim to find more signatures of outflows. We perform Gaussian line scans to find any narrow spectral signatures, and physical wind model scans where possible. We tentatively identify an outflow in NGC 5204 X-1, blueshifted to 0.34c, which produces emission features with a total significance of at least 3$\sigma$. Next we compare ULXs with similar hardness ratios. Holmberg IX X-1 shows absorption features which could be associated with a photoionized outflowing absorber, similar to that seen in NGC 1313 X-1. The spectrum of Holmberg II X-1 possesses features similar to NGC 5408 X-1 and NGC 6946 X-1 shows O VIII rest-frame emission. All other sources from the sample also show tentative evidence of spectral features in their high resolution spectra. Further observations with the XMM-Newton and Chandra gratings will place stronger constraints. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission is the first focusing X-ray telescope in the hard X-ray (3-79 keV) band. Among the phenomena that can be studied in this energy band, some require high time resolution and stability: rotation-powered and accreting millisecond pulsars, fast variability from black holes and neutron stars, X-ray bursts, and more. Moreover, a good alignment of the timestamps of X-ray photons to UTC is key for multi-instrument studies of fast astrophysical processes. In this Paper, we describe the timing calibration of the NuSTAR mission. In particular, we present a method to correct the temperature-dependent frequency response of the on-board temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. Together with measurements of the spacecraft clock offsets obtained during downlinks passes, this allows a precise characterization of the behavior of the oscillator. The calibrated NuSTAR event timestamps for a typical observation are shown to be accurate to a precision of ~65 microsec., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Comments welcome

Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback is the process by which supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies may moderate the growth of their hosts. Gas outflows from supermassive black holes release huge quantities of energy into the interstellar medium, clearing the surrounding gas. The most extreme of these, the ultra-fast outflows (UFOs), are the subset of X-ray detected outflows with velocities higher than 10,000 km/s, believed to originate in relativistic disc winds, a few hundred gravitational radii from the black hole. The absorption features produced by these outflows are variable, but no clear link has been found between the behaviour of the X-ray continuum and the energy or equivalent width of the outflow features due to the long time-scales of quasar variability. Here, we present the detection of multiple absorption lines from an extreme ultra-fast gas flow in the X-ray spectrum of the active galactic nucleus IRAS 13224-3809, at 0.236+/-0.006 times the speed of light (71,000 km/s), where the absorption is strongly anti-correlated with the emission from the inner regions of the accretion disk. If the gas flow is identified as a genuine outflow then it is in the fastest 5 per cent of such winds, and its variability is hundreds of times faster than in other variable winds, allowing us to observe in hours what would take months in a quasar. We find signatures of the wind simultaneously in both low and high energy detectors, which are consistent with a single ionized outflow, linking the two phenomena. The detection of the wind responding to the emission from the inner disk demonstrates a connection between accretion processes occurring on very different scales, with the X-rays from within a few gravitational radii of the black hole ionizing the relativistically outflowing gas as the flux rises., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, published in Nature 02/03/17

Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) are among the most luminous galaxies in the Universe. Powered by highly obscured, possibly Compton-thick, active galactic nuclei (AGNs), Hot DOGs are characterized by SEDs that are very red in the mid-IR yet dominated by the host galaxy stellar emission in the UV and optical. An earlier study identified a sub-sample of Hot DOGs with significantly enhanced UV emission. One target, W0204-0506, was studied in detail and, based on Chandra observations, it was concluded that the enhanced emission was most likely due to either extreme unobscured star-formation (${\rm SFR}>1000~M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}$) or to light from the highly obscured AGN scattered by gas or dust into our line of sight. Here, we present a follow-up study of W0204-0506 as well as two more Hot DOGs with excess UV emission. For the two new objects we obtained Chandra/ACIS-S observations, and for all three targets we obtained HST/WFC3 F555W and F160W imaging. We conclude that the excess UV emission is primarily dominated by light from the central highly obscured, hyper-luminous AGN that has been scattered into our line of sight. We cannot rule out, however, that star-formation may significantly contribute to the UV excess of W0204-0506., 17 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We investigated the time-variability and spectral properties of the eclipsing X-ray source Circinus Galaxy X-1 (GG X-1), using Chandra, XMM-Newton and ROSAT. We phase-connected the lightcurves observed over 20 years, and obtained a best-fitting period $P = (25,970.0 \pm 0.1)$ s $\approx$7.2 hr, and a period derivative $\dot{P}/P = ( 10.2\pm4.6) \times 10^{-7}$ yr$^{-1}$. The X-ray lightcurve shows asymmetric eclipses, with sharp ingresses and slow, irregular egresses. The eclipse profile and duration vary substantially from cycle to cycle. We show that the X-ray spectra are consistent with a power-law-like component, absorbed by neutral and ionized Compton-thin material, and by a Compton-thick, partial-covering medium, responsible for the irregular dips. The high X-ray/optical flux ratio rules out the possibility that CG X-1 is a foreground Cataclysmic Variable; in agreement with previous studies, we conclude that it is the first example of a compact ultraluminous X-ray source fed by a Wolf-Rayet star or stripped Helium star. Its unocculted luminosity varies between $\approx$4 $\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $\approx$3 $\times 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Both the donor star and the super-Eddington compact object drive powerful outflows: we suggest that the occulting clouds are produced in the wind-wind collision region and in the bow shock in front of the compact object. Among the rare sample of Wolf-Rayet X-ray binaries, CG X-1 is an exceptional target for studies of super-critical accretion and close binary evolution; it is also a likely progenitor of gravitational wave events., 27 pages, 11 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the analysis of the first Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array observations (~220 ks), simultaneous with the last Suzaku observations (~50 ks), of the active galactic nucleus of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509. The time-averaged spectrum in the 1–79 keV X-ray band is dominated by a power-law continuum (Γ ~ 1.8–1.9), a strong soft excess around 1 keV, and signatures of X-ray reflection in the form of Fe K emission (~6.4 keV), an Fe K absorption edge (~7.1 keV), and a Compton hump due to electron scattering (~20–30 keV). We show that these data can be described by two very different prescriptions for the soft excess: a warm (kT ~ 0.5–1 keV) and optically thick (τ ~ 10–20) Comptonizing corona or a relativistically blurred ionized reflection spectrum from the inner regions of the accretion disk. While these two scenarios cannot be distinguished based on their fit statistics, we argue that the parameters required by the warm corona model are physically incompatible with the conditions of standard coronae. Detailed photoionization calculations show that even in the most favorable conditions, the warm corona should produce strong absorption in the observed spectrum. On the other hand, while the relativistic reflection model provides a satisfactory description of the data, it also requires extreme parameters, such as maximum black hole spin, a very low and compact hot corona, and a very high density for the inner accretion disk. Deeper observations of this source are thus necessary to confirm the presence of relativistic reflection and further understand the nature of its soft excess.

We present a broad band spectral analysis of the black hole binary GX~339-4 with NuSTAR and Swift using high density reflection model. The observations were taken when the source was in low flux hard states (LF) during the outbursts in 2013 and 2015, and in a very high flux soft state (HF) in 2015. The high density reflection model can explain its LF spectra with no requirement for an additional low temperature thermal component. This model enables us to constrain the density in the disc surface of GX~339-4 in different flux states. The disc density in the LF state is $\log(n_{\rm e}/$ cm$^{-3})\approx21$, 100 times higher than the density in the HF state ($\log(n_{\rm e}/$ cm$^{-3})=18.93^{+0.12}_{-0.16}$). A close-to-solar iron abundance is obtained by modelling the LF and HF broad band spectra with variable density reflection model ($Z_{\rm Fe}=1.50^{+0.12}_{-0.04}Z_{\odot}$ and $Z_{\rm Fe}=1.05^{+0.17}_{-0.15}Z_{\odot}$ respectively)., Accepted by MNRAS
