Abstract

The Large Latin American Millimeter Array (LLAMA for short) is a joint scientific and technological undertaking of Argentina and Brazil whose goal is to install and to operate an observing facility capable of performing observations of the Universe at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. It will consist of a 12m ALMA-like antenna with the addition of two Nasmyth cabins. LLAMA is located at 4850m above sea level in the Puna Saltenia, in the northwest region of Argentina. When completed, LLAMA will be equipped with six ALMA receivers covering Bands 1, 2+3, 5, 6, 7, and 9, which will populate the two Nasmyth cabins. Abstract

We present the basic concept of a new astronomical instrument: SPARC4 - Simultaneous Polarimeter and Rapid Camera in 4 bands. SPARC4 combines in one instrument: (i) photometric and polarimetric modes; (ii) sub-second time-resolution in photometric mode and excellent time-resolution in polarimetric mode; (iii) simultaneous imaging in four broad-bands for both modes. This combination will make SPARC4 a unique facility for ground-based optical observatories. Abstract

In this paper we present multiband optical polarimetric observations of the VHE blazar PKS 2155-304 made simultaneously with a H.E.S.S./Fermi high-energy campaign in 2008, when the source was found to be in a low state. The intense daily coverage of the dataset allowed us to study in detail the temporal evolution of the emission and we found that the particle acceleration timescales are decoupled from the changes in the polarimetric properties of the source. We present a model in which the optical polarimetric emission originates at the polarised mm-wave core and propose an explanation for the lack of correlation between the photometric and polarimetric fluxes. The optical emission is consistent with an inhomogeneous synchrotron source in which the large scale field is locally organised by a shock in which particle acceleration takes place. Finally, we use these optical polarimetric observations of PKS 2155-304 at a low state to propose an origin for the quiescent gamma-ray flux of the object, in an attempt to provide clues for the source of its recently established persistent TeV emission., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

4. Wind-wind collision in the Carinae binary system II: Constrains to the binary orbital parameters from radio emission near periastron passage

Abstract

In this paper we use the 7 mm and 1.3 mm light curves obtained during the 2003.5 low excitation phase of the eta Carinae system to constrain the possible parameters of the binary orbit. To do that we assumed that the mm wave emission is produced in a dense disk surrounding the binary system; during the low excitation phase, which occurs close to periastron, the number of ionizing photons decreases, producing the dip in the radio emission. On the other hand, due to the large eccentricity, the density of the shock region at periastron is very high and the plasma is optically thick for free-free radiation at 7 mm, explaining the sharp peak that was observed at this frequency and lasted for about 10 days. From the shape and duration of the peak we were able to determine the orbital parameters of the binary system, independently of the stellar parameters, such as mass loss rates, wind velocities or temperature at the post-shock region., Comment: accepted for publication by MNRAS

5. Millimeter-wave emission during the 2003 low excitation phase of eta Carinae

Abstract

In this paper we present observations of eta Carinae in the 1.3 mm and 7 mm radio continuum, during the 2003.5 low excitation phase. The expected minimum in the light curves was confirmed at both wavelengths and was probably due to a decrease in the number of UV photons available to ionize the gas surrounding the binary system. At 7 mm a very well defined peak was superimposed on the declining flux density. It presented maximum amplitude in 29 June 2003 and lasted for about 10 days. We show that its origin can be free-free emission from the gas at the shock formed by wind-wind collision, which is also responsible for the observed X-ray emission. Even though the shock strength is strongly enhanced as the two stars in the binary system approach each other, during periastron passage the X-ray emission is strongly absorbed and the 7 mm observations represent the only direct evidence of this event.

6. Long-term optical variability of the blazars PKS 2005-489 and PKS 2155-304

Abstract

We present optical light curves for the period 1996-2000, of two of the brightest known EGRET BL Lac objects: PKS 2005-489 and PKS 2155-304, the latter also one of the few known TeV sources. For both objects, quiescent epochs of low level of variability were followed by active periods, without any indication of periodicity. In PKS 2005-489, several variability events with duration of about 20 days were observed. In PKS 2155-304 fast drops and subsequent rises in luminosity occurred in time scales of days. We proposed an explanation in which a region moving along the relativistic jet is eclipsed by broad line region clouds or star clusters in the host galaxy. We compare our light curves with contemporaneous X-ray observations from All-Sky Monitor/RXTE. Correlations between optical and X-ray activity were not found in any of the sources at long time scales. However in PKS 2005-489 possible correlations were observed in 1997 and 1998 at short time scales, with optical variability preceding X-rays by 30 days in 1997 and succeeding them by about 10 days in 1998. The analysis of the SED, using the optical data presented here and BeppoSAX contemporaneous observations obtained from the literature, shows only small shifts in the synchrotron peak as the X-ray flux density changes., Comment: 23 pages,12 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

7. Microvariability in the optical polarization of 3C279

Abstract

We present results of a microvariability polarization study in the violently variable quasar 3C279. We have resolved the polarization curves in the V band for this object down to timescales of minutes. We found two main components in the evolution of the degree of linear polarization, one consisting of a flicker with timescales of several tens of minutes and other component with far more significant variations on timescales of a few days. The linear polarization descended from $\sim 17$ % down to $\sim 8$ % in three nights. The polarization angle underwent a sudden change of more that 10 degrees in a few hours, perhaps indicating the injection of a new shock in the jet. The amplitude of the intranight flickering in the degree of polarization is at the level of $\sim 1$%. These are probably the best sampled polarization data ever obtained for this object. We also performed IR observations and we provide a follow-up of the evolution of this source at such energies after the main polarization outburst., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

8. Stellar variability in low-extinction regions towards the Galactic Bulge

Abstract

Intensive monitoring of low-extinction windows towards the galactic bulge has provided in the last years valuable information for studies about the dynamics, kinematics and formation history of this part of the galaxy, mainly by characterizing the bulge stellar populations (Paczy\'nski, 1996). Since 1997, we have been conducting an intensive photometric-astrometric survey of the galactic bulge, with the monitoring of about 120000 stars in 12 windows uniformly distributed in galactic latitude and longitude (Blanco & Terndrup, 1989 e Blanco, 1988) never before submitted to this kind of survey. For this purpose, we have used the IAG/USP CCD Meridian Circle of the Abrah\~ao de Moraes Observatory. The main objective of this work is the identification and classification of variable objects. In this work we present the set up and development of the necessary tools for a project like this and the posterior analysis of our data. We briefly describe the construction of a program to organize and detect variables among the observed stars, including real time alerts (for variations greater than 0.3 magnitudes). The preliminary analysis after the processing of 76 nights of observation yielded 479 variable stars, from which 96.7 % of them are new. We discuss the preliminary classification of this variables, based on: a) the observed amplitude of variation; b) the shape of light curve; c) the expected variable classes among our data and d) the calculated periods, whenever possible. Finally, we discuss the future perspectives for the project and for the applications and analysis of the discovered variable stars., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures. Accepted by A&AS

9. Extension of Tycho catalog for low-extinction windows in the galactic bulge

Abstract

We present in this work secondary catalogs up to $m_{Val} \sim 13$ based on the Tycho reference frame (ESA, 1997) for 12 selected low-extinction fields towards the galactic bulge. The observations have been performed with the Askania-Zeiss Meridian Circle equiped with a CCD camera, located at the Abrah\~ao de Moraes Observatory (Valinhos, Brazil) and operated by the Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, S\~ao Paulo University. The presented catalog, though not complete, has been designed to help in intensive search programmes (e.g. microlensing and variable searches) and therefore the selected standards have a high astrometric and photometric ($V$ band, approximately) quality. The mean precisions obtained were $0.0018^{s}$ in $\alpha$, 0.013'' in $\delta$, 0.030 for the standard deviation in magnitude and 0.0042 for the magnitude when weighted with the error bars in each night (in the mean, 42 stars for the catalog of each window). 14. DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY AND THERAPEUTIC FOLLOW–UP: EXPERIENCE OF A DEDICATED HEART FAILURE CLINIC

Abstract

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)is associated with an increased risk of developing ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD), although to a lesser extent than ischemic heart disease (IHD).It is now well established that defibrillator implantation (ICD) reduces mortality in patients with reduced systolic function after a myocardial infarction, conversely, this effect is less evident in patients with DCM. The aim of this work is to report the experience of a dedicated outpatient clinic for heart failure patients and to underline the importance of a multiparametric assessment for a patient who is a candidate for ICD implantation. From December 2019 to December 2023, 38 patients (34 males and 4 females) (mean age 62.6 years) were referred to our hospital with a diagnosis of hypokinetic dilated heart disease of first detection, in 4 cases due to declared alcohol and/or substance abuse.Three patients had already undergone defibrillator implantation in primary prevention but did not have on board the 4 classes of drugs recommended by the latest guidelines, so they were subjected to the maximum tolerated dose and re–evaluated remotely with clinical improvement and echocardiographic values. The other 35 patients, whose disease began with de novo reduced ejection fraction heart failure (HFrEF), admitted to our ICU, all underwent coronary angiography with finding of a coronary tree free of critical alterations; 28 had performed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that showed no edema, necrosis and/or fibrosis; only in two patients have been documented fibrosis with a low percentage of distribution, which does not account for low EF values. Of the other 7 patients, 4 did not undergo MRI 2 for claustrophobia and 3 for atrial fibrillation. Maximal drug therapy with the 4 pillars recommended by the guidelines was set up for all patients;the introduction of glyphozines in diabetic patients has been shared with diabetologist. All patients underwent echocardiographic check–ups at 3–6 months and one year, which over time documented a recovery associated with improvement in symptoms and quality of life. All patients also underwent ECG according to Holter for arrhythmic risk stratification: none of them required ICD implantation procedures. This preliminary analysis shows that a correct application of the guidelines allows to improve the prognosis of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy; of course, further larger studies are needed to substantiate these findings.

Abstract

Clinical PET acquisitions of the heart suffer from artefacts and drops in image quality due to the poor spatial resolution of the PET system. Moreover, cardiac PET images are further degraded by the blur caused by the breathing and beating motions, thus hampering diagnosis and evaluation of myocardial pathologies. Anatomy-enhanced PET reconstruction, using a high-resolution CT, has proven useful in brain imaging. In cardiac datasets however, due to the motion artefacts, the application of any restoring technique on datasets affected by motion blur needs to be preceded by the validation of the proposed method on realistic static datasets. In this work, the validation is performed using static cardiac ex vivo datasets obtained from a number of sacrificed sheep, scanned on a clinical PET/CT scanner. The aim of this work is to assess the effectiveness of reconstructions of the acquired datasets with different CT-based anatomical priors, in comparison to reconstructions currently applied in clinical practise. The gold standard to which all reconstructions are compared consists of images of the same hearts scanned on a small-animal PET scanner, whose high spatial resolution allows for almost artefact-free images. Encouraging results were obtained so far, with improvements in volume delineation and uniformity of activity values when anatomical information was used. In a patient requiring pacing and defibrillation therapy, but without superior venous access, combined therapy with S-ICD and leadless pacemaker could be the best solution. Abstract

IVIA is a joint initiative of at least 8 Latin-American countries plus Portugal and Spain to make good use of large telecommunications antennas that are out of service in these countries, because most international communications are now using submarine cables. The first step will be to refurbish the antennas and then to start doing single dish observations of radiosources. In a second step the antennas will be equipped with VLBI (Very Long Base Interferometry) equipment, to establish a VLBI network. This project will be able to effectively promote scientific integration in Ibero-America. The work is starting in several countries; here we present several scientific cases for the use of the antennas, and we report on the first Brasilian activities.

Abstract

Background and Objective: An elevated heart rate (HR) is an independent risk factor for mortality and morbidity in patients with acute heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of ivabradine, a selective HR-lowering agent, in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) complicating ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (AMI)., Methods: Patients with post-AMI CS were randomized to standard treatment (SDT, 28 patients) or to standard treatment plus ivabradine (I + SDT, 30 patients). In the presence of orotracheal intubation (OTI), ivabradine was administered by nasogastric intubation. HR, BP, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class, NT-proBNP, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and diastolic function (LVDF) were monitored at specific times after the onset of AMI. The primary (surrogate) end-point was the in-hospital halving of plasma NT-proBNP levels. The secondary end-points were cardiovascular death, hospital re-admission for worsening HF, and clinical and haemodynamic improvement., Results: Treatment groups were statistically similar with regard to age, gender distribution, cardiovascular risk factors, number of diseased vessels and overall treated lesions, AMI site and occurrence of OTI. In-hospital mortality was double in the SDT group in comparison with the I + SDT group (14.3 vs. 6.7 %), but the difference was not statistically significant. HR, BP, NT-proBNP and LVEF favorably changed in both groups, but the change was more relevant in the I + SDT group. LVDF significantly changed only in the I + SDT group (p < 0.01). Patients in the I + SDT group did not experience adverse effects., Conclusion: Ivabradine in CS complicating AMI is safe, is associated with a short-term favourable outcome and can be effectively administered by nasogastric intubation.

Abstract

The assessment of left ventricular shape changes during cardiac revolution may be a new step in clinical cardiology to ease early diagnosis and treatment. To quantify these changes, only point registration was adopted and neither Generalized Procrustes Analysis nor Principal Component Analysis were applied as we did previously to study a group of healthy subjects. Here, we extend to patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy the original approach and preliminarily include genotype positive/phenotype negative individuals to explore the potential that incumbent pathology might also be detected. Using 3D Speckle Tracking Echocardiography, we recorded left ventricular shape of 48 healthy subjects, 24 patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and 3 genotype positive/phenotype negative individuals. We then applied Generalized Procrustes Analysis and Principal Component Analysis and inter-individual differences were cleaned by Parallel Transport performed on the tangent space, along the horizontal geodesic, between the per-subject consensuses and the grand mean. Endocardial and epicardial layers were evaluated separately, different from many ecocardiographic applications. Under a common Principal Component Analysis, we then evaluated left ventricle morphological changes (at both layers) explained by first Principal Component scores. Trajectories' shape and orientation were investigated and contrasted. Logistic regression and Receiver Operating Characteristic curves were used to compare these morphometric indicators with traditional 3D Speckle Tracking Echocardiography global parameters. Geometric morphometrics indicators performed better than 3D Speckle Tracking Echocardiography global parameters in recognizing pathology both in systole and diastole. Genotype positive/phenotype negative individuals clustered with patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy during diastole, suggesting that incumbent pathology may indeed be foreseen by these methods. Left ventricle deformation in patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy compared to healthy subjects may be assessed by modern shape analysis better than by traditional 3D Speckle Tracking Echocardiography global parameters. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy pathophysiology was unveiled in a new manner whereby also diastolic phase abnormalities are evident which is more difficult to investigate by traditional ecocardiographic techniques.

Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of a psychological preoperative program in reducing preoperative anxiety and in promoting compliance of pediatric participants with surgical procedures., Methods: Fifty children and their mothers were subjected to two conditions of treatment to investigate whether psychological preparation activities and psychologist's support during all phases of the operatory iter (group 1) were as efficient in reducing mothers' and child's anxiety and in increasing the child's compliance as distraction activities (group 2). The observed child anxiety was assessed using mYPAS; compliant behaviors with Induction Compliance Checklist; and mothers' anxiety with Amsterdam Pre-operative Anxiety and Information Scale., Results: Children of the first group were less anxious and more cooperative in the preoperative period and during anesthesia induction than in the other condition. The psychological program was also more efficient in reducing mothers' anxiety. Finally, the mothers of group 1 showed a significantly higher satisfaction and judged as significantly more effective the program proposed to prepare their children than the mothers of group 2., Conclusions: Preparing children through playful dramatization of the operative procedure, manipulation of medical instruments and psychologist's support may be useful in pediatric surgery structures., (© 2013 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

Abstract

The prescription of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)) to patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this drug could prove harmful. The aim of the study was to assess the antiplatelet activity and safety of a combined antiplatelet treatment with indobufen and clopidogrel in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin, undergoing coronary stenting. Forty-two consecutive ACS patients treated with stent implantation were randomly assigned to receive clopidogrel 75 mg daily (loading dose 300 mg) plus indobufen 100 mg twice a day (group A), or clopidogrel 75 mg daily, after 300 mg of loading dose (group B). Platelet activity and safety were monitored in both groups at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 months with laboratory and clinical evaluation. A lower value of max % platelet aggregation to arachidonic acid and collagen was found in group A compared to group B (31.79 ± 27.33 vs. 73.67 ± 19.92; p < 0.0001 and 28.53 ± 21.32 vs. 73.58 ± 17.71; p < 0.0001, respectively). There was no difference in max % of platelet inhibition to adenosine diphosphate between the two groups (14.23 ± 18.92 vs. 10.30 ± 18.97; p = 0.23). In the population that was under indobufen treatment, the serum thromboxane B2 (TXB2) production at 1 week and 1 month was very low (2.6 ± 1.6 ng/ml and 3.0 ± 2.7 ng/ml, respectively; p = 0.82). The combined treatment was well tolerated in group A patients. This study suggests that the combined antiplatelet treatment with clopidogrel and indobufen could be a good option in ACS patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin undergoing coronary stenting.

Abstract

Levosimendan increases the sensitivity of the heart to calcium and consequently exerts positive inotropic effects. Levosimendan is indicated in acutely decompensated severe congestive heart failure. We report that levosimendan infusion may induce myocardial ischemia in patients with acute heart failure.
