POLAR-2 is a space-borne polarimeter, built to investigate the polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts and help elucidate their mechanisms. The instrument is targeted for launch in 2024 or 2025 aboard the China Space Station and is being developed by a collaboration between institutes from Switzerland, Germany, Poland and China. The instrument will orbit at altitudes between 340km and 450km with an inclination of 42$^{\circ}$ and will be subjected to background radiation from cosmic rays and solar events. It is therefore pertinent to better understand the performance of sensitive devices under space-like conditions. In this paper we focus on the radiation damage of the silicon photomultiplier arrays S13361-6075NE-04 and S14161-6050HS-04 from Hamamatsu. The S13361 are irradiated with 58MeV protons at several doses up to 4.96Gy, whereas the newer series S14161 are irradiated at doses of 0.254Gy and 2.31Gy. Their respective performance degradation due to radiation damage are discussed. The equivalent exposure time in space for silicon photomultipliers inside POLAR-2 with a dose of 4.96Gy is 62.9 years (or 1.78 years when disregarding the shielding from the instrument). Primary characteristics of the I-V curves are an increase in the dark current and dark counts, mostly through cross-talk events. Annealing processes at $25^{\circ}C$ were observed but not studied in further detail. Biasing channels while being irradiated have not resulted in any significant impact. Activation analyses showed a dominant contribution of $\beta^{+}$ particles around 511keV. These resulted primarily from copper and carbon, mostly with decay times shorter than the orbital period., Comment: accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

Despite several decades of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger spectral observations, Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) remain one of the big mysteries of modern astrophysics. Polarization measurements are essential to gain a more clear and complete picture of the emission processes at work in these extremely powerful transient events. In this regard, a first generation of dedicated gamma-ray polarimeters, POLAR and GAP, were launched into space in the last decade. After 6 months of operation, the POLAR mission detected 55 GRBs, among which 14 have been analyzed in detail, reporting a low polarization degree and a hint of a temporal evolution of the polarization angle. Starting early 2024 and based on the legacy of the POLAR results, the POLAR-2 instrument will aim to provide a catalog of high quality measurements of the energy and temporal evolution of the GRB polarization thanks to its large and efficient polarimeter. Several spectrometer modules will additionally allow to perform joint spectral and polarization analyzes. The mission is foreseen to make high precision polarization measurements of about 50 GRBs every year on board of the China Space Station (CSS). Despite over 50 years of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) observations many open questions remain about their nature and the environments in which the emission takes place. Polarization measurements of the GRB prompt emission have long been theorized to be able to answer most of these questions. The POLAR detector was a dedicated GRB polarimeter developed by a Swiss, Chinese and Polish collaboration. The instrument was launched, together with the second Chinese Space Lab, the Tiangong-2, in September 2016 after which it took 6 months of scientific data. During this period POLAR detected 55 GRBs as well as several pulsars. From the analysis of the GRB polarization catalog we see that the prompt emission is lowly polarized or fully unpolarized. There is, however, the caveat that within single pulses there are strong hints of an evolving polarization angle which washes out the polarization degree in the time integrated analysis. Building on the success of the POLAR mission, the POLAR-2 instrument is currently under development. POLAR-2 is a Swiss, Chinese, Polish and German collaboration and was recently approved for launch in 2024. Thanks to its large sensitivity POLAR-2 will produce polarization measurements of at least 50 GRBs per year with a precision equal or higher than the best results published by POLAR. POLAR-2 thereby aims to make the prompt polarization a standard observable and produce catalogs of the gamma-ray polarization of GRBs. Here we will present an overview of the POLAR mission and all its scientific measurement results. Additionally, we will present an overview of the future POLAR-2 mission, and how it will answer some of the questions raised by the POLAR results., Presented at the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

The prompt emission of GRBs has been investigated for more than 50 years but remains poorly understood. Commonly, spectral and temporal profiles of {\gamma}-ray emission are analysed. However, they are insufficient for a complete picture on GRB-related physics. The addition of polarization measurements provides invaluable information towards the understanding of these astrophysical sources. In recent years, dedicated polarimeters, such as POLAR and GAP, were built. The former of which observed low levels of polarization as well as a temporal evolution of the polarization angle. It was understood that a larger sample of GRB polarization measurements and time resolved studies are necessary to constrain theoretical models. The POLAR-2 mission aims to address this by increasing the effective area by an order of magnitude compared to POLAR. POLAR-2 is manifested for launch on board the China Space Station in 2024 and will operate for at least 2 years. Insight from POLAR will aid in the improvement of the overall POLAR-2 design. Major improvements (compared to POLAR) will include the replacement of multi-anode PMTs (MAPMTs) with SiPMs, increase in sensitive volume and further technological upgrades. POLAR-2 is projected to measure about 50 GRBs per year with equal or better quality compared to the best seen by POLAR. Despite over 50 years of research, many open questions remain about the origin and nature of GRBs. Polarization measurements of the prompt emission of these extreme phenomena have long been thought to be the key to answering a range of these questions. The POLAR detector was designed to produce the first set of detailed and reliable polarization measurements in an energy range of approximately 50-500 keV. During late 2016 and early 2017, POLAR detected a total of 55 GRBs. Analysis results of 5 of these GRBs have been reported in the past. The results were found to be consistent with a low or unpolarized flux. However, previous reports by other collaborations found high levels of polarization. We study the polarization for all the 14 GRBs observed by POLAR for which statistically robust inferences are possible. Additionally, time-resolved polarization studies are performed on GRBs with sufficient apparent flux. A publicly available polarization analysis tool, developed within the 3ML framework, was used to produce statistically robust results. The method allows to combine spectral and polarimetric data from POLAR with spectral data from the Fermi GBM and Swift-BAT to jointly model the spectral and polarimetric parameters. The time integrated analysis finds all results to be compatible with a low or zero polarization with the caveat that, when time-resolved analysis is possible within individual pulses, we observe moderate polarization with a rapidly changing polarization angle. Thus, time-integrated polarization results, while pointing to lower polarization are potentially an artifact of summing over the changing polarization signal and thus, washing out the true moderate polarization. Therefore, we caution against over interpretation of any time-integrated results and encourage one to wait for more detailed polarization measurements from forthcoming missions such as POLAR-2 and LEAP., Comment: 43 pages, 78 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Gamma-ray bursts are the strongest explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang, believed to be produced either in forming black holes at the end of massive star evolution or merging of compact objects. Spectral and timing properties of gamma-ray bursts suggest that the observed bright gamma-rays are produced in the most relativistic jets in the Universe; however, the physical properties, especially the structure and magnetic topologies in the jets are still not well known, despite several decades of studies. It is widely believed that precise measurements of the polarization properties of gamma-ray bursts should provide crucial information on the highly relativistic jets. As a result there have been many reports of gamma-ray burst polarization measurements with diverse results, see, however many such measurements suffered from substantial uncertainties, mostly systematic. After the first successful measurements by the GAP and COSI instruments, here we report a statistically meaningful sample of precise polarization measurements, obtained with the dedicated gamma-ray burst polarimeter, POLAR onboard China's Tiangong-2 spacelab. Our results suggest that the gamma-ray emission is at most polarized at a level lower than some popular models have predicted; although our results also show intrapulse evolution of the polarization angle. This indicates that the low polarization degrees could be due to an evolving polarization angle during a gamma-ray burst., 34 pages, 15 figures (16 pages and 3 figures without supplementary information). POLAR is a compact space-borne detector designed to perform reliable measurements of the polarization for transient sources like Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50-500keV. The instrument works based on the Compton Scattering principle with the plastic scintillators as the main detection material along with the multi-anode photomultiplier tube. POLAR has been launched successfully onboard the Chinese space laboratory TG-2 on 15th September, 2016. In order to reliably reconstruct the polarization information a highly detailed understanding of the instrument is required for both data analysis and Monte Carlo studies. For this purpose a full study of the in-orbit performance was performed in order to obtain the instrument calibration parameters such as noise, pedestal, gain nonlinearity of the electronics, threshold, crosstalk and gain, as well as the effect of temperature on the above parameters. Furthermore the relationship between gain and high voltage of the multi-anode photomultiplier tube has been studied and the errors on all measurement values are presented. Finally the typical systematic error on polarization measurements of Gamma-Ray Bursts due to the measurement error of the calibration parameters are estimated using Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 43 pages, 30 figures, 1 table; Preprint accepted by NIMA

POLAR is a new satellite-born detector aiming to measure the polarization of an unprecedented number of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the 50-500 keV energy range. The instrument, launched on-board the Tiangong-2 Chinese Space lab on the 15th of September 2016, is designed to measure the polarization of the hard X-ray flux by measuring the distribution of the azimuthal scattering angles of the incoming photons. A detailed understanding of the polarimeter and specifically of the systematic effects induced by the instrument's non-uniformity are required for this purpose. In order to study the instrument's response to polarization, POLAR underwent a beam test at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France. In this paper both the beam test and the instrument performance will be described. This is followed by an overview of the Monte Carlo simulation tools developed for the instrument. The POLAR detector is a space based Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) polarimeter with a wide field of view, which covers almost half the sky. The instrument uses Compton scattering of gamma rays on a plastic scintillator hodoscope to measure the polarization of the incoming photons. The instrument has been successfully launched on board of the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong 2 on September 15, 2016. The construction of the instrument components is described in this article. Details are provided on problems encountered during the construction phase and their solutions. Initial performance of the instrument in orbit is as expected from ground tests and Monte Carlo simulation.

The Gamma-ray Burst Polarimeter-POLAR is a highly sensitive detector which is dedicated to the measurement of GRB’s polarization with a large effective detection area and a large field of view (FOV). The optimized performance of POLAR will contribute to the capture and measurement of the transient sources like GRBs and Solar Flares. The detection energy range of POLAR is 50 keV ~ 500 keV, and mainly dominated by the Compton scattering effect. POLAR consists of 25 detector modular units (DMUs), and each DMU is composed of low Z material Plastic Scintillators (PS), multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMT) and multi-channel ASIC Front-end Electronics (FEE). POLAR experiment is an international collaboration project involving China, Switzerland and Poland, and is expected to be launched in September in 2016 onboard the Chinese space laboratory “Tiangong-2 (TG-2)”. With the efforts from the collaborations, POLAR has experienced the Demonstration Model (DM) phase, Engineering and Qualification Model (EQM) phase, Qualification Model (QM) phase, and now a full Flight Model (FM) of POLAR has been constructed. The FM of POLAR has passed the environmental acceptance tests (thermal cycling, vibration, shock and thermal vacuum tests) and experienced the calibration tests with both radioactive sources and 100% polarized Gamma-Ray beam at ESRF after its construction. The design of POLAR, Monte-Carlo simulation analysis, as well as the performance test results will all be introduced in this paper.

The hard X-ray polarimeter POLAR aims to measure the linear polarization of the 50-500 keV photons arriving from the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The position in the sky of the detected GRBs is needed to determine their level of polarization. We present here a method by which, despite of the polarimeter incapability of taking images, GRBs can be roughly localized using POLAR alone. For this purpose scalers are attached to the output of the 25 multi-anode photomultipliers (MAPMs) that collect the light from the POLAR scintillator target. Each scaler measures how many GRB photons produce at least one energy deposition above 50 keV in the corresponding MAPM. Simulations show that the relative outputs of the 25 scalers depend on the GRB position. A database of very strong GRBs simulated at 10201 positions has been produced. When a GRB is detected, its location is calculated searching the minimum of the chi2 obtained in the comparison between the measured scaler pattern and the database. This GRB localization technique brings enough accuracy so that the error transmitted to the 100% modulation factor is kept below 10% for GRBs with fluence Ftot \geq 10^(-5) erg cm^(-2) . Gamma-ray polarimetry is a new powerful tool to study the processes responsible for the emission from astrophysical sources and the environments in which this emission takes place. Few successful polarimetric measurements have however been performed thus far in the gamma-ray energy band due to the difficulties involved. POLAR is a dedicated polarimeter designed to perform high precision measurements of the polarization of the emission from gamma-ray burst in the 50-500 keV energy range. This new polarimeter is expected to detect approximately 50 gamma-ray bursts per year while performing high precision polarization measurements on approximately 10 bursts per year. The instrument was launched into lower earth orbit as part of the second Chinese space lab, the Tiangong-2, on September 15th 2016 and has been taking data successfully since being switched on one week after. The instrument uses a segmented scintillator array consisting of 1600 plastic scintillator bars, read out by 25 flat-panel multi-anode photomultipliers, to measure the Compton scattering angles of incoming photons. The small segmentation and relatively large uniform effective area allow the instrument to measure the polarization of a large number of transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts, with an unprecedented precision during its two year life-time. The final flight model underwent detailed calibration prior to launch as well as intensive space qualification tests, a summary of which will be presented in this paper. The instrument design will be discussed first followed by an overview of the on-ground tests, finally the in-orbit behavior as measured during the first weeks of the mission will be presented.

Sophisticated electronic devices comprising sensitive microelectronic components have been installed in the close proximity of the 720 MeV superconducting electron linear accelerator (linac) driving the FLASH (Free Electron Laser in Hamburg), presently in operation at DESY in Hamburg. Microelectronic chips are inherently vulnerable to ionizing radiation, usually generated during routine operation of high-energy particle accelerator facilities like the FLASH. Hence, in order to assess the radiation effect on microelectronic chips and to develop suitable mitigation strategy, it becomes imperative to characterize the radiation field in the FLASH environment. We have evaluated the neutron and gamma energy (spectra) and dose distributions at critical locations in the FLASH tunnel using superheated emulsion (bubble) detectors, GaAs light emitting diodes (LED), LiF-thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) and radiochromic (Gafchromic EBT) films. This paper highlights the application of passive dosimeters for an accurate analysis of the radiation field produced by high-energy electron linear accelerators.

POLAR is a space-borne instrument designed for measurements of the polarization of the prompt hard X- and gamma-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB). POLAR consists of 25 identical Detection Modules equipped with Front-End Electronics (FEE) units. This paper describes: design, strategy and verification process of the POLAR trigger mechanism.

The results of proton irradiation test of electronic devices, selected for the RPC trigger electronic system of the CMS detector, will be presented. For Xilinx Spartan-IIE FPGA the cross-section for Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in configuration bits was measured. The dynamic SEUs in flip-flops were also investigated, but not observed. For the FLASH memories no single upsets were detected. Only after irradiating with a huge dose permanent damages of devices were observed. For Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM), the SEU cross-section was measured.

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the strongest explosions in the universe which might be associated with creation of black holes. Magnetic field structure and burst dynamics may influence polarization of the emitted gamma-rays. Precise polarization detection can be an ultimate tool to unveil the true GRB mechanism. POLAR is a space-borne Compton scattering detector for precise measurements of the GRB polarization. It consists of a 40$\times$40 array of plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 multi-anode PMTs (MaPMTs). It is scheduled to be launched into space in 2016 onboard of the Chinese space laboratory TG2. We present a dedicated methodology for POLAR calibration and some calibration results based on the combined use of the laboratory radioactive sources and polarized X-ray beams from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. They include calibration of the energy response, computation of the energy conversion factor vs. high voltage as well as determination of the threshold values, crosstalk contributions and polarization modulation factors., Comment: 2015 IEEE NSS conference proceedings

POLAR is a joint European-Chinese experiment aimed at a precise measurement of hard X-ray polarization (50-500 keV) of the prompt emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts. The main aim is a better understanding of the geometry of astrophysical sources and of the X-ray emission mechanisms. POLAR is a compact Compton polarimeter characterized by a large modulation factor, effective area, and field of view. It consists of 1600 low-Z plastic scintillator bars read out by 25 at-panel multi-anode photomultipliers. The incoming X-rays undergo Compton scattering in the bars and produce a modulation pattern; experiments with polarized synchrotron radiation and GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the polarization degree and angle can be retrieved from this pattern with the accuracy necessary for identifying the GRB mechanism. The flight model of POLAR is currently under construction in Geneva. The POLAR instrument will be placed onboard the Chinese spacelab TG-2, scheduled for launch in low Earth orbit in 2015. The main milestones of the space qualification campaign will be described in the paper.

POLAR is a space instrument designed for measurements of the polarization of the prompt hard X- and gamma-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB).

POLAR, a joint European-Chinese experiment, is a novel compact space-borne Compton polarimeter conceived and optimized for detection of the prompt emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) and precise measurements of polarization in the hard X-ray energy range 50-500 keV. The complete instrument consists of two parts: internal one, placed inside spacelab and the detector itself, placed outside spacelab, called respectively IBOX and OBOX. The OBOX constitutes of 25 frontend electronic modules (FEE), high voltage and low voltage power supplies and the Central Task Processing Unit. The main functions of Central Task Processing Unit system are defined as follows: communication and transfer of data to IBOX, communication with all frontends, analysis of trigger signals and generation of global trigger signals, data acquisition, synchronizing of all frontends and control of power supplies. The functional requirements are fulfilled by three individual FPGA chips named respectively to their functions: Concentrator, Trigger and CPU. This article presents description of the Central Task Processing Unit hardware design and brief introduction to main components of the firmware developed for this device. Ongoing integration activities of the device with the complete POLAR instrument proved that all basic functions are working correctly. The qualification model of the instrument has been constructed and currently undergoes verification and validation tests in view of planned flight onboard the Chinese spacelab TG-2 scheduled for 2015.

The main performance challenge of POLAR - a novel hard X-ray polarimeter, is to achieve high statistical accuracy and large modulation factors. Both require great level of response uniformity. Though, typical sensitivity of multi-anode PMTs may vary between its channels up to the factor of two to three. Moreover, the measured signal can be further altered by light coupling quality. We investigate response equalization based on utilizing of an optical mask with light-blocking diaphragms. It is placed between scintillator bars and the PMT photo-cathode. Each PMT channel-pad is equipped with the unique diaphragm with its area related to the initial sensitivity of the corresponding channel. We present module/mask construction details, test setup and measurement results done before and after applying of the mask corrections. Applicability of the method is discussed with respect to the instrument dynamic range, low energy threshold requirements and aging effects due to the in-space utilization.

POLAR is a novel compact space-borne Compton polarimeter conceived for a precise measurement of hard X-ray polarization and optimized for the detection of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) photons in the energy range 50–500 keV. In December 2009 we have performed a systematic calibration of one modular unit of POLAR at four energy levels (200, 288, 356 and 511 keV) with a 100% polarized synchrotron radiation source at the beam line ID15A at ESRF. The detector was displaced several times on the beam line in order to achieve a uniform illumination, which mimics the flux from a GRB placed on the zenith of the experiment. Several rotations of the detector on the beam axis allowed us to test the response of POLAR to several polarization angles. Two different analysis methods to reconstruct the polarization angle of the beam and the modulation factor μ 100 are presented; the first relies on the existence of a unpolarized sample, produced by merging two data sets with orthogonal polarization directions, and is less dependent on systematic effects due to asymmetries in the detector; the second is independent from unpolarized measurements, and will likely be used to analyze the polarization of GRB during the flight. Both methods reconstruct the input polarization angle within 2° and produce modulation factors μ 100 between 30% and 50% depending on the beam energy. Monte Carlo simulations performed with GEANT4 confirm the experimental results.

In modern High Energy Physics Experiments the electronics modules for controlling and/or data acquisition are very often exposed to high neutron radiation. It's well known that it can cause many failures during work of such systems, even total break downs. In such case, the studies of radiation sensitivity of electronic devices should take place to avoid problems during the lifetime of the experiments. This article describes the Single Event Effects (SEE) tests of Xilinx Spartan3 XC3S400 FPGA populated on Altium Live Design Evaluation Board. The results of the tests are presented and discussed. Additionaly gamma-ray spectrometry analysis of the board has been performed.

The concept of the Altera Nios II embedded processor implementation inside Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) of the CCD camera for the "Pi of the Sky" experiment is presented. The digital board of the CCD camera, its most important components, current implementation of firmware (VHDL) inside the FPGA and the role of external 8051 microcontroller is briefly described. The main goal of the presented work is to get rid of the external microcontroller and to design new system with Nios II processor built inside FPGA chip. Constraints for implementing the design into the existing camera boards are discussed. New possibilities offered by a larger FPGA for next generation of cameras are considered.

In Summer 2005, a high brilliance, vacuum ultraviolet (lambda=13 nm) free electron laser named FLASH (free electron laser in Hamburg) commenced its routine operation at DESY in Hamburg. The FLASH is driven by a 700 MeV electron linac based on high-purity superconducting Niobium cavities developed by the TESLA Technology collaboration at DESY. The gamma radiation doses along the containment tank walls of the accelerator modules 4 and 5 of the electron linac were evaluated using radiochromic films during its routine operation. This paper highlights a genetic algorithm (GA) developed by us in order to unfold the dosimeter readings. The unfolded data were used to inverse calculate the radiation source strength at the cavities, thereby quantifying the field emission induced radiation produced by each individual cavity belonging to the accelerator module.

During a long range intercontinental commercial flight from Europe to Australia the neutron and photon dose equivalents have been evaluated using a pair of electronic pocket dosemeters ALOKA PDM-313 and ALOKA PDM-111, respectively. A temperature compensated superheated emulsion (bubble) detector and an aluminium oxide TL-Dosimeter were carried together for the purpose of in-flight calibration of the electronic dosemeters. We have evaluated the radiation doses during flights from various cities in the northern hemisphere to Sydney (Australia). The results were compared with the cosmic radiation exposure calculated using the EPCARD and CARI 6 flight dose computation codes developed by GSF (Germany) and FAA (USA), respectively. A simple method of aviation dose interpolation based on polynomial fitting has been proposed.

Displacement damage (DD) caused by fast neutrons in unbiased Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) light emitting diodes (LED) resulted in a reduction of the light output. On the other hand, a similar type of LED irradiated with gamma rays from a (60)Co source up to a dose level in excess of 1.0 kGy (1.0 x 10(5) rad) was found to show no significant drop of the light emission. This phenomenon was used to develop a low cost passive fluence monitor and kinetic energy released per unit mass dosemeter for accelerator-produced neutrons. These LED-dosemeters were used to assess the integrated fluence of photoneutrons, which were contaminated with a strong bremsstrahlung gamma-background generated by the 730 MeV superconducting electron linac driving the free electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. The applications of GaAs LED as a routine neutron fluence monitor and DD precursor for the electronic components located in high-energy accelerator environment are highlighted.

Electronic components during High Energy Physics experiments are exposed to high level of radiation. Radiation environment causes many problems to electronic devices. The goal of several experiments done at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron, Hamburg) was to investigate nature of irradiation effects, caused damages and possible techniques of mitigation. One of aspects of experiments is radiation measurements. The propositions of building radiation monitoring system, using different semiconductor components, are presented. Second aspect is radiation tolerance. Different electronic devices were tested: FPGA chips, CCD sensors, bubble dosimeters and LED diodes. Components were irradiated in TESLA Test Facility 2 tunnel and in laboratory using 241 Am/Be neutron source. The results of experiments are included and discussed.

TESLA Reports 2004 17 pp. (2004)., Electronic components during High Energy Physics experiments are exposed to high level of radiation. Radiation environment causes many problems to electronic devices. This report highlights the major hazards to electronics caused by radiation. Several experiments were done and results are included.

The results of proton radiation test of electronic devices for RPC trigger electronic system of CMS detector are presented. For Xilinx Spartan-IIE FPGA the cross section for Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in configuration bits was measured. The dynamic SEUs in flip-flops was also investigated, but not observed. For the FLASH memories no single upsets were detected, but after a huge dose permanent damages of devices were observed. For SDRAM memories, the SEU cross section was measured. A brief description of radiation inducted effects in FPGAs, SRAM and FLASH memories is also presented.© (2004) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Measurements of polarisation of gamma-rays emitted in Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) will provide a new parameter in collected data. This parameter is sensitive to predictions of different models of poorly known gamma-ray emission processes. Here, we present the POLAR experiment - a compact space detector dedicated to the measurement of polarisation of GRB gamma-rays prompt emission. The flight model of POLAR will be ready in 2014, for launch in space by 2015 on the Chinese Spacelab TG-2. Expected lifetime of experiment is 3 years.

Electronic measurement and control instruments incorporating sophisticated micro and macro electronic components operating in the radiation environment of high-energy particle accelerators are prone to radiation induced malfunctions. Many of such devices are now been installed in the containment tunnel of the high-energy electron linac driving the FLASH (free electron laser at Hamburg) facility at DESY. We have developed an efficient concrete material for constructing highly compact shielding walls to protect the electronic devices from the energetic neutrons. This report highlights the Monte Carlo simulation technique we have used for the optimised shielding calculations

In modern high energy physics experiments the electronics modules for controlling and/or data acquisition are very often exposed to various ionising radiation fields. It's well known that it can cause many failures during work of such systems, even total break downs. In such case, the studies of radiation hardness of electronic devices should take place to avoid problems during the lifetime of the experiment. This article describes the idea of a universal modular system, which is under development at Warsaw Univeristy of Technology, to perform radiation experiments of various types of electronic devices. The concept and main advantages of the system are presented and discussed.
