Abstract

In order to take advantage of the very high nonlinear susceptibility of conjugated polymer materials, Poly(3- AlkylThiophene)s, P3AT, were synthesized in the laboratory. The physical, thermomechanical and linear optical proper- ties of synthesized P3AT have been investigated and the first experimental attempts at creating nonlinear optical waveguides and determining their characteristics are presented. After synthesizing P3AT, the relationships between poly- mer chain characteristics and mechanical properties are investigated to see if the polymer is suitable for optical waveguide process technology. We also examine the optical attenuation of the synthesized material, a crucial factor in anticipating the relative opacity of the future component. For the first time we present the absorption spectrum of 3-Octylthiophene molecules in the Near Infra-Red (NIR) region that suggests optical losses for the material are about 0.6 dB.cm -1 at 1550 nm. Next we examined several waveguide structures such as ridge, buried and Strip Loaded WaveGuides (SLWG) based on P3AT material. For the buried waveguides, we have observed the signal transmission and in our opinion the low opti- cal transmission of P3AT ridge and SLWG could be attributed to extrinsic losses (mainly scattering) due to both the re- maining insoluble products in the polymer and to the poor adhesion between optical layers.

Abstract

The radical copolymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl a-fluoroacrylate (FATRIFE) with tert-butyl a-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) initiated by tertbutyl 2,2-dimethylperoxypropanoate was investigated in acetonitrile solution. A series of poly(FATRIFE-co-MAF-TBE) copolymers were synthesized with MAF-TBE compositions, determined by 19F NMR, ranging from 12 to 44 mol %. MAF-TBE incorporation was less than 50 mol % as this monomer underwent no radical homopolymerization. The obtained copolymers exhibited number-average molecular weights and polydispersity indexes ranging from 1.5 3 104 to 9.6 3 104 g/mol and from 1.5 to 3.1, respectively. The reactivity ratios were determined by the Kelen-Tu¨ dos method (rFATRIFE ¼ 1.71 6 0.01 and rMAF-TBE ¼ 0 at 74 8C) leading to random copolymers and alternating copolymers when the MAF-TBE molar ratio in copolymer is close to 50 mol %. Thermal and optical properties of the resulting polymers were examined. Glass transition temperatures of copolymers were varying from 89 to 108 8C. Abstract

International audience; Holey fibres have a broad range of optical properties thanks to their microstructuration and offer a wide range of applications. The combination of intrinsic properties of compound glass, such as chalcogenide glass, and a microstructured fibre geometry allows to consider exacerbated optical properties such as dispersion and nonlinearity for these fibres. In this study, high-index sulphide glass holey fibres (n = 2.251 at 1.55 μm) have been accomplished using the capillary-stacking technique. Sulphide glasses from the GeGaSbS system are used. The drawing step is crucial for microstructuration and for determination of optical properties. Sulphide holey fibres, which were optically characterised with near-field spectroscopy at 1.55 μm, show a single-mode guidance with an effective mode area of 108 μm2.

Abstract

session 7 " Waveguiding and photonic crystals " [O-27]; International audience; Oxidised porous layers (OPS) were impregnated with index-matching liquids with high thermo-optical coefficient. In this paper, we will present some results on the evolution of the refractive index of impregnated OPS, as a function of the temperature. Refractive index linearly varies with temperature. The thermo-optical coefficients of OPS/liquid composite material have been measured. They directly depend on the OPS porosity. We have shown that the experimental results are in agreement with the temperature variations of the refractive index calculated using the effective medium Bruggeman model. The existence of a switching temperature Ts in impregnated two-layer plane waveguides has been demonstrated and the possibility for obtaining thermo-optical switches is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Research on sensors has experienced a noticeable development over the last decades especially in label free optical biosensors. However, compact sensors without markers for rapid, reliable and inexpensive detection of various substances induces a significant research of new technological solutions. The context of this work is the development of a sensor based on easily integrated and inexpensive micro-resonator (MR) component in integrated optics, highly sensitive and selective mainly in the areas of health and food. In this work, we take advantage of our previous studies on filters based on micro-resonators (MR) to experiment a new couple of polymers in the objective to use MR as a sensing function. MRs have been fabricated by processing SU8 polymer as core and PMATRIFE polymer as cladding layer of the waveguide. The refractive index contrast reaches 0.16 @ 1550 nm. Sub-micronic ring waveguides gaps from 0.5 to 1 µm have been successfully achieved with UV (i-line) photolithography. This work confirms our forecasts, published earlier, about the resolution that can be achieved. First results show a good extinction coefficient of ~17 dB, a quality factor around 104 and a finesse of 12. These results are in concordance with the theoretical study and they allow us to validate our technology with this couple of polymers. Work is going on with others lower cladding materials that will be used to further increase refractive index contrast for sensing applications.

7 pages; International audience; The Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a non-invasive method for estimating the tissular blood flow and speed at a microscopic scale (microcirculation). It is used for medical research as well as for the diagnosis of diseases related to circulatory system tissues and organs including the issues of microvascular flow (perfusion). It is based on the Doppler effect, created by the interaction between the laser light and tissues. LDF measures the mean blood flow in a volume formed by the single laser beam, that penetrate into the skin. The size of this measurement volume is crucial and depends on skin absorption, and is not directly reachable. Therefore, current developments of the LDF are focused on the use of always more complex and sophisticated signal processing methods. On the other hand, laser Double Doppler Flowmeter (FL2D) proposes to use two laser beams to generate the measurement volume. This volume would be perfectly stable and localized at the intersection of the two laser beams. With FL2D we will be able to determine the absolute blood flow of a specific artery. One aimed application would be to help clinical physicians in health care units.

Abstract

The optimization procedure for designing silica integrated components (specially in the telecommunication infrared spectrum, around wavelength 1550 nm) uses specific index liquids as a core top layer. These liquids consist of transparent silicone oils which present a very low vapor pressure. In this paper we present an accurate method to measure the thermo-optical coefficient of these liquids. We determine that, for liquid based silicone, this coefficient is −4.5×10 −4 K −1 . By the way, this technique also enable us to know the behavior of integrated directional coupler as thermo-optical switch. These experiments are useful to design such kind of integrated components.

Abstract

With a view to improving the realisation of polymer optical waveguide some features relevant to the photolithography process are analysed. This paper focuses on defects that occur on the surface of polymer layers involved in the process. For example, depending on the heat treatment or the deposited material, some worm-like defects appear on the polymer surface. When they occur, the waveguide surface roughness becomes too high (about one hundred nm and more). This means that the optical performance of the waveguides is too poor. In this document, we show the changes in temperature on polymer film surfaces which are coated with a thin inorganic layer and the occurrence of these defects is observed. This work confirms that the defect occurrence is clearly linked to the glass transition temperature. The paper reports that, in some cases, the adjustment of thermal properties by annealing can advantageously shift the glass transition, without changing the target optical properties.

Abstract

International audience; In the context of optical transmission in the polymer integrated waveguides, transmission losses are a limiting factor for the development of such a technology. In this paper, we analyze the different features that cause optical losses namely intrinsic absorption of the material and light scattering in the bulk. This analysis of optical transmissions mainly in the telecom C-band (1530-1565 nm) and O-band (1260- 1360 nm) is based on measurements in bulk material and solutions. These allow to assess the limiting level of losses induced by the material itself. The results can give the intensity attenuation resulting from defects induced by the waveguide processing. It results that losses by scattering process can reach 0.1 dB/cm at 1550 nm when samples are filtered at 0.2 µm. It is slightly higher at 1320 nm but probably less than 0.2 dB/cm. Most of the optical losses are then due to the intrinsic absorption and can be around 0.7 dB/cm for PMMA, at 1550 nm. Consequently, in the case of channel singlemode waveguides, the global linear loss is higher at this wavelength, and, the additional losses are brought by imperfections of the channel both in the bulk and on the surface. This article also shows that reducing the level of C-H bonds content of the polymers down to 25x 10- 3 cm- 3 the material losses are limiting by scattering and can fall down to around 0.2 dB/cm (at 1550 nm).

Abstract

In this paper, the syntheses of two styrene-based monomers bearing either an optical active group, Dispersed Red 1, or a photocrosslinkable cinnamate group are described. The study of their copolymerizations with maleic anhydride and the characterizations of the copolymers are given. Polymer materials with exposure to UV curing light, 254 nm, exhibit a photobleaching process. This feature can be used in the preparation of channelized wave-guide using photomask methods.

Abstract

International audience; In order to create thermally tunable filter, we fabricate integrated micro-ring resonators with specific polymers. Their high index contrast (Δn ~ 0.15 at the wavelength of 1550 nm) allows to make small size waveguides (typically with cross sections of 1.2 × 1.5 μm2). We study the impact of different ring radii and gaps on the response of filters. Compared to the state of the art with polymers, we have obtained ring resonators with good characteristics. These results and the high thermo-optic coefficient of polymers enable us to plan the creation of thermally tunable resonators. For that purpose, we develop a thermal model of the polymer waveguide behaviour in order to minimize the electrical consumption of a tunable filter. First experiments of thermal tunability of the micro-ring filter are also reported to work on a range of 40 °C giving a 5 nm shift of the dropped wavelength.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we present optical and thermo-optical characterization results of integrated filters based on micro-ring resonators fabricated with a couple of polymers ''PVCI/PMATRIFE''. Their high index contrast (Dn 0.15 at the wavelength of 1550 nm) allows to make small size waveguides with cross sections of 1.5 1.5 mm2. The study of the impact of different gaps on the extinction ratio and FWHM (full width at half maximum) of filters leads to a better design. First experiments of thermal tunability of the microring filter using a thermo-electric cooler (TEC) are also reported giving a 5 nm shift of the dropped wavelength for a temperature change of 40 K. The fabrication of gold electrodes on microrings is reported and the electrical power required for the tuning of the drop wavelength of 0.0055 nm/1 mW show that with an optimized electrode design the consumption will be low.

Abstract

The electro-optic properties of a new variety of cross-linked polymer referred to as Red-acid Magly are being reported. Its linear and nonlinear optical properties are characterized in comparison with the classical side-chain polymer DR1-MMA. The combined curing and poling processes are optimized so as to improve the thermal stability of the nonlinear optical properties. Polymer films are shown to sustain a high electro-optic coefficient of 12 pm/V at 1.32$~\mu$m during several weeks at 85 °C. An electro-optic phase modulator based on this polymer has been fabricated and demonstrated.

Abstract

In this paper, theoretical studies about refractive index and attenuation of halogenated and deuterated monomers and polymers are described. Concerning refractive index study, a mathematical model is elaborated to calculate the refractive index of acrylic monomers accurately. Concerning the attenuation in a near infrared (NIR) and visible region, we have shown and quantified that the most important factor of intrinsic absorption in Plastic Optical Fibers (POF) is the presence of C-H bonds. So to reduce attenuation of POF, halogenated and deuterated acrylates and vinyl carbonates are synthesized. Thermal and optical properties of the corresponding homo and copolymers are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; High-quality trails of ridge waveguides were successfully fabricated using a new cross-linkable polymer (PCC01) by UV photolithography followed by Reactive-Ion Etching (RIE) process. The cross-linking reaction of PCC01 is based on the copper-free Huisgen cyclo-addition between an azide and an acetylene group. The new cross-linkable polymer (PCC01) consists of a structural modification of the previously described materials (Scarpaci et al. Polym. Chem.2011, 2, 157), because the ethynyl group is functionalized by a methyl group instead of the TMS protecting group. This feature prevents the formation of silica (SiO(2)) generated by trimethylsilyl groups and which was stopping the engraving process before completion. Herein, we describe the synthesis, the NLO characterizations, and the fabrication of a high-quality ridge waveguide with PCC01. The new cross-linkable polymer PCC01 not only solves the problems encountered with our previously described polymers, but also presents an enhancement of the electro-optic stability, because d(33) coefficients up to 30 pm/V stable at 150 °C were recorded.

Abstract

Poly(3-octylthiophene), (P3OT) in addition to its electronics properties exhibits a high Kerr coefficient, n2, due to its third order nonlinear dielectric susceptibility. At the wavelength of 1550 nm, this coefficient n2 is one of the highest. So, this material should be suitable to build integrated all optical switching devices. To construct this device, it is necessary to make a single-mode optical waveguide. For the time being, such a P3OT waveguide has never been obtained due to excessive optical losses. In view to produce single-mode waveguide with P3OT as a core, we investigated the different causes of these optical losses in the material and in the guiding structure. We characterized the optical transmission at key steps in its development. First, we demonstrated that the intrinsic polymer absorption is not a limiting factor at 1550 nm, and then we studied the transmission properties of planar (1-D confined light) and channel waveguides (2-D confined light). The results revealed that better transmission properties can be achieved using planar waveguides rather that confined channel waveguides. This article describes the development and the characterization of the guiding structures that enabled us to identify the main origins of optical losses. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As a result, the Aeff decreases from 12 μm2 down to 2.3 μm2, the total thickness of the waveguide is thus reduced and consequently the Vπ. Optimal parameters were calculated at λ= 1550 nm for single mode inverted-rib waveguides structure. The PAS1 a new polymer is used as electro-optic material for the core. An analytical model taking account the losses by tunnelling, allowed us to estimate the optimum distance between electrodes to reduce the Vπ which could be about 1.6V ( 0.8 V in a push-pull configuration). Related with the bandwidth of the modulator, permittivity measurements were carried out on core and cladding polymers as well. The process of waveguides fabrication is described in details and several waveguides are performed. Finally, a new experimental technique for precision measurements of the propagation losses in waveguides is presented. The principle is simple, and the propagation losses measured is found to be independent of coupling conditions.

Abstract

New methacrylic copolymers with prospective second-order nonlinear optical effects are synthesized by radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with conjugated zwitterionic methacrylate monomers (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-[1-(ω-methacryloyloxyalkyl)-4-pyridino]phenolates,1a and 1b). These monomers are obtained via a multi-step reaction. First, 4-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine (2) is electrosynthesized by an SRN1 reaction in liquid ammonia. Then, this pyridine derivative is N-alkylated by an ω-bromoalkyl methacrylate (5a or 5b) which, in its turn, is obtained by esterification of an ω-bromoalcohol and methacryloyl chloride.

Abstract

International audience; Laser interferometry and optical emission spectroscopy are well known techniques to characterize thin film etching during plasma processes. On one hand, laser interferometry allows the detection of end point and in situ etching rate, however it supposes using an external laser source. On the other hand, optical emission spectroscopy is useful for end point detection and also gives information on the plasma composition, if it works in a sufficient range of wavelength (for example 400-800 nm in our case) to find the characteristics plasma emission lines. As a result, this technique could also enable us to determine the etching rate in real time. The main topic of this paper is to show that, in a specific etching condition and geometrical configuration with the appropriated materials, Optical Emission Spectroscopy can gather the advantages of the two diagnostic techniques. This will be study on O2 etching plasma dedicated to polymers patterning in an optical integrated circuit process.

Abstract

International audience; Copolymers based on 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl a-fluoroacrylate (FATRIFE) and 2,2,2-trichlororoethyl a-fluoroacrylate (FATRICE) were synthesized in good yields by radical process initiated by tert-butyl 2,2-dimethylperoxypropanoate. Molar composition of the obtained poly(FATRIFE-co-FATRICE) copolymers were assessed by means of 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios, ri, of both comonomers have been measured to be rFATRIFE ¼ 0.56 0.01 and rFATRICE ¼ 0.11 0.01 at 74 C using the Kelen-Tu¨ dos method. Thermal and optical properties of the resulting polymers were examined. Thermogravimetric analyses showed good thermal stability, thermal decomposition occurring from 300 C to 310 C for all copolymers. Moreover, the glass transition temperature of copolymers varied from 113 C to 127 C, increasing with the molar ratio of FATRICE in the copolymers. The refractive indices were measured at 633, 1320, and 1550 nm, ranging from 1.3750 to 1.4812 at 1550 nm and were found to increase linearly with the chlorine content of the copolymer, allowing a precise control of the refractive index.

Abstract

International audience; We studied the property adjustments of polymers such as PMMA poly(methylmethacrylate) and PMMI poly(methylmethacrylimide) for optical waveguide applications. The standard generic process to yield ridge waveguides requires the PMMA to undergo thermal treatment to avoid worm-like defects. We analysed the occurrence of these defects and found a solution to make the PMMA strengthened to pass the whole process. Then, the optical losses of both the polymers are investigated at two wavelengths and with two methods. Finally, small singlemode ridge waveguides are produced with mode diameters around 3-4 μm and linear optical losses ~1-3 dB/cm at 1550 nm. The index contrast is sufficiently high to perform, for example, wavelength micro-ring resonators based filters.

They possess ultra-fast response times and a large third order non-linearity compared to minerals (third order susceptibility Χ(3) of conjugated polymers can be 4 orders of magnitude larger than that of fused silica). Such large non-linearities would allow the fabrication of compact all-optical devices at low power levels. Here we present the first investigations into the creation of a conjugated polymer single mode optical waveguide based on Poly(3- AlkylThiophene) (P3AT). We first synthesized the P3AT and tried to control the chemical reaction conditions in order to improve polymer solubility in common organic solvents. In parallel, we studied the engineering of P3AT single mode waveguide structures made by photolithography techniques which requires the adjustment of P3AT thermo-mechanical properties. Recently, we have been able to fabricate and measure the parameters of Strip-Loaded and buried waveguides with usual polymers. We intend to adapt these processes to obtain the first P3AT single mode optical waveguide.

Abstract

conference 6996 " Silicon Photonics and Photonic Integrated Circuits ", poster session, [6996-63], http://spie.org/x24034.xml; International audience; Polymers are increasingly attractive for the creation of optical integrated circuits particularly owing to a high thermo-optical coefficient (-10-4 °C-1) which allows to design optical functions tunable according to temperature. For example, tunable filters or multiplexers are attractive in telecom applications for bringing broadband services to subscribers. Moreover, the large available range of refractive index, leads to large scale of integration, lowering the fabrication costs and could be an alternative solution to semiconductor or inorganic dielectric technologies. In this work, optical functions were created using standard photolithography and Reactive Ion Etching (RIE). Photolithography was used with particular conditions to improve pattern resolution. Firstly, the details of making optical polymer waveguides and wavelength micro-ring based filters are given. Optical loss measurements of waveguides and optical characterisation of micro-ring resonators are also shown for which the results are in agreement with the modelling. Secondly, the same micro-ring resonators were observed with the temperature change and we noticed that the variation of resonance wavelength is about 0.2 nm.°C-1. This is just what is needed for the creation of tunable filters or multiplexers without electrical high power, considering the very small size of the component.

Abstract

session Affiches [P45]; National audience; Nous avons entrepris la réalisation et caractérisation de guides d'études afin de valider un banc de caractérisation de l'effet Kerr par auto-modulation de phase. L'objectif de ce montage est de caractériser des guides en polymères à fort c(3) à base de poly(3-alkylthiophène). Cet article présente la réalisation de guides monomodes (diamètre de mode < 3 µm) et les mesures de pertes sur guide avec ce type de matériau à 1,55 µm. Les résultats sont d'autant plus encourageants que l'on aurait pu suspecter des niveaux de pertes par absorption beaucoup plus importants.

L'optique intégrée à base de matériaux polymères est une solution attrayante pour la réalisation de fonctions complexes miniaturisées. Néanmoins, les difficultés technologiques liées à la réalisation de ces familles de composants photoniques imposent de nouvelles techniques de caractérisation. Le réflectométrie optique à faible cohérence (OLCR) permet la caractérisation et l'optimisation de guides d'ondes et de fonctions optiques intégrées innovantes, notamment des filtres à base de micro-résonateurs annulaires.

Abstract

International audience; Due to remarkable properties of the chalcogenide glasses, especially sulphide glasses, amorphous chalcogenide films should play a motivating role in the development of integrated planar optical circuits and their components. This paper describes the fabrication and properties of optical waveguides of pure and rare earth doped sulphide glass films prepared by two complementary techniques: RF magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The deposition parameters were adjusted to obtain, from sulphide glass targets with a careful control of their purity, layers with appropriate compositional, morphological, structural characteristics and optical properties. These films have been characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray measurements (EDX). Their optical properties were measured thanks to m-lines prism coupling and near field methods. Rib waveguides were produced by dry etching under CF4, CHF3 and SF6 atmosphere. The photo-luminescence of rare earth doped GeGaSbS films were clearly observed in the n-IR spectral domain and the study of their decay lifetime will be presented. First tests were carried out to functionalise the films with the aim of using them as sensor.

Conference 6183 "Integrated Optics, Silicon Photonics, and Photonic Integrated Circuits", poster session [6183-54], proceedings of SPIE (ISBN 9780819462398); International audience; Polymers are attractive to realize integrated circuits specially because they are very simple to process and are promising for low cost devices. Moreover, beside low cost technology, the large possible range of refractive index, could lead to large scale of integration, lowering the fabrication costs. In some cases, it could be an alternative solution to semiconductor or inorganic dielectric technologies. With usual UV photolithography technology, this work shows that it is possible to perform small guides in order to provide relatively high circuit densification. The refractive index contrast, between optical core and cladding, can be as high as 0.07 instead of 0.02 for the higher contrast in silica Ge doped waveguides. Recently, this contrast has been increased to 0.11 at the wavelength of 1550nm. These materials make possible the patterning of guides having radius of curvature smaller than 200μm. Such curvatures open the way to functions based on microrings that potentially lead to compact wavelength multiplexers. With the view to control the fabrication of polymer waveguides, some features of the process are reported here. For example, shortcomings such as unsuitable film worm aspects are described and solutions are given with requirements assigned to rough materials. Mechanical and thermal properties of polymers have to be adjusted to withstand integrated circuit processing. This paper also presents results concerning the realization of integrated passive microring resonators with this technology.

Abstract

Generalization of optical communication promotes fabrication of low cost integrated waveguide components. Polymer waveguides are attractive because they are very simple to process and are promising for low cost devices. Up to date, several met hods are used to make single mode guides in polymer films. Traditionally, they require multi-step processes involving photolithography, etching and annealing. The UV induced modification of the dielectrics property of polymers is a useful technique for low cost realization of integrated optical circuits and can enable a direct writing process. This paper reports a demonstration of photo-printed waveguides in an intrinsically photosensitive polymer film. In this polymer (PVCi: PolyVinylCinnamate), local UV irradiation yields a lowering of refractive index even at telecom wavelengths (1300 and 1550 nm). We show significant achievement concerning the index contrasts up to 3x10 -2 at 1550 nm. The more the refractive inde x contrast between the core and cladding increases, the more the guide size and curvature can be reduced, allowing the manufacture of smaller photonic devices. However miniaturization of optical planar waveguides in integrated devices increases the coupling losses from and to single-mode optical fibers. Simulations and experimental demonstrations with PVCi photosensitive waveguides also show the potential of photo-printing process to make efficient index mode converters betw een small planar waveguides and single-mode fibers. The process uses the pos t-irradiation of the guide by an UV source to gradually decrease the refractive index from the guide to the fibre. INTRODUCTION Polymer materials with their flexibility and ability to use, present a great interest for integrated optics and photonic integrated circuits. Beside fabrication of polymer waveguides by photolithography process, the photo-inscription method takes advantage to suppress the etching step. Furthermore, the ability to vary by UV irradiation the refractive index of a photosensitive polymer opens the way to new and low cost processes avoiding difficult steps of usual methods. Thus, for example, it enables to make easier all main functionalities of waveguides : pre-connecting, wa velength filtering, m ode coupling, wave length multiplexing and switching.

International audience; In this letter, we show the possibility to create by a photoinscription method a refractive index taper, in a photosensitive polymer waveguide, in order to reduce the coupling losses during connection to a single-mode optical fiber. The process uses the postirradiation of the guide by an ultraviolet source to gradually decrease the refractive index from the guide to the fiber. The losses decrease is controlled in situ in real time.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, the realisation and performances of a photo-printed waveguide in an intrinsically photosensitive polymer film have been demonstrated. One of the advantages of this technique, is the reduced number of process steps. In this polymer (polyvinylcinnamate), local UV irradiation yields a lowering of refractive index. Using this polymer, the photo-induced index contrast in a film is significantly improved from 1.5 × 10−2 (previous works) up to 2.5 × 10−2 at 1550 nm. This is one of the highest contrast value reported for a photo-printed non-birefringent waveguide. Concerning optical transmission properties, first promising results have been obtained. Optical measurements in the polymer film (0.25 dB/cm at 1550 nm) and in polymer solution (less than 0.2 dB/cm at telecommunication wavelengths) have shown the high potentiality of this material.

Publisher: ACS , ISSN 1520-6106; International audience; Under UV irradiation, poly(vinyl cinnamate) (PVCi) films undergo cross-linking due to [2 + 2] photocycloaddition between cinnamoyl groups. Consequently, electronic configuration of lateral polymer groups changes and also leads to the drop of the refractive index in the visible range. This mechanism is studied with regards to the level of the electronic absorption of cinnamate centered at 278 nm. It acts on refractive index by shifting the absorption UV band. Most of the time, this influence vanishes in the near infrared region (NIR). It is due to antagonist phenomena acting at the expense of the index lowering. The causes analysis leads us to optimize the irradiation spectrum, providing higher index contrasts between irradiated and nonirradiated area. We show that strong index changes can be achieved in PVCi film, up to 2.5 × 10-2 even in the NIR, enabling us, for example, to perform optical photoprinting waveguides for telecommunication wavelengths (1300-1550 nm).

Abstract

A difunctional NLO Azo-Dye chromophore has been synthesized and polymerization has been performed with a comonomer bearing a side-chain epoxy group. Deposition of the polymer on glass substrates was performed by spin-coating, resulting in uniform films up to 2 µm thickness. The orientation of the chromophore was performed under a " pin-to-plane " positive corona discharge followed by a heat-treatment in order to obtain reticulation of the films. Molecular orientation has been investigated using UV-Vis. and Raman spectroscopy. Poling of the films results in a decay of absorbency as well as in a blue shift of the spectrum. At the same time, the 1600 cm-1 band disappears from the Raman spectra, indicating orientation of the chromophores. Cross-linking has been studied by FTIR and all-optical poling and showed an improved stability of the electro-optic thin films.

Abstract

International audience; Photo-writing process of polymer optical waveguides can offer advantages to make easier connection fiber guide, and noticeably simplifies the fabrication procedure. In order to carry out a photo-writing technique, we choose a photosensitive polymer. Thus, under far UV irradiation, polyvinylcinnamate (PVCi) undergoes a change in its absorption, yielding a refractive index variation. This work presents the first results of relationship between the bleaching of the UV band and the refractive index change in the area of optical telecommunication spectrum. By the way, it is shown that the index contrast obtained by controlling the UV source, can be improved, in order to make suitable this process for printing integrated optical waveguides.

We present different glass ion-exchanged waveguide polarizer configurations using an electro-optic polymer (conjugated PMMA-DR1) overlay. The polarizer function is accomplished by modifying the propagation constant of a guided mode by changing the birefringence induced in the polymer by a poling process. A TE pass polarizer with an extinction ratio of 39 dB, has been realized using a corona poling. Further developments require a better control of the poling process. A TE polarizer structure using poling in the vertical direction have also been tested. A TM polarizer with planar metallic electrodes for poling is presented. Design considerations and fabrication results are presented.

Abstract

Design and synthesis of new electro-optic polymers are presented. These polymers have specific refractive index as low as the index of glass ion-exchange waveguides. With these materials, a novel hybrid structure can be designed for optical modulation in passive waveguide. The low index is obtained by copolymerization of an electro-optic monomer and two fluorinated comonomers. The result is a copolymer with an index close to 1.50, high electro-optic coefficient and good technical properties.

Abstract

We report on a new type of glass ion-exchanged waveguide TE polarizer using an electro-optic polymer (conjugated PMMA-DR1) overlay. The polarization function is assured by poling the polymer in the vertical direction using a Corona process. An extinction ratio of 39 dB is obtained at the wavelength of (lambda) equals 1.3 micrometer. The insertion losses of the device are in order of 7 dB. The performance of the polarizer are investigated. Our experimental investigations show a polarization efficiency over than 40 dB.

Abstract

A novel hybrid structure for optical modulation and switching is presented. It consists of a thin film of electro-optic polymer spin-coated on passive waveguide made by ion exchange on glass substrate. Two structures corresponding to weak guiding and strong guiding conditions are considered. Design issues and modulation performances are studied for the two structures. Low half-wave voltages less than 10 volts are expected for an interaction length of 1 cm provided the electro-optic coefficient of the nonlinear polymer is 10 pm/V.

Abstract

Topic: Photonics and Semiconductor Device Physics; International audience; This paper demonstrates the realization of submicrometric patterns by using standard photolithography (365 nm). Significant improvements in standard photolithography resolution can be achieved with specific conditions of a very thin layer of photoresist (0.13 µm). Usually, standard photolithography has a resolution limit of about 1 µm. Firstly, using Kirchhoff diffraction theory we show that with these new conditions the theoretical resolution limit could be 0.4 µm. Secondly, in the experimental part, the realization of 0.8 µm size patterns is demonstrated.

Abstract

We report the fabrication and the physical and optical characterizations of sulphide GaxGe25−xSb10S65(x=0,5) rib waveguides. High quality films fabricated on SiO2/Si wafer substrates were obtained using the sputtering magnetron rf deposition method. The slab waveguides obtained without annealing present propagation losses of about 0.6 dB/cm at 1550 nm. These optical losses are not important for implementation in optical devices based on silicon-on-insulator or polymer, for instance, atomic force microscopy measurements revealed low interface roughness between the different media (substrate/film and film/air). Reactive ion etching was used to pattern rib waveguides between 2 and 300 µm wide. The parameters were optimized to obtain a dry etching process that had low surface roughness, vertical sidewalls, etch depth of more than 1 µm, and reasonable etching rate. This technique was used to fabricate Y optical junctions for optical interconnections on chalcogenide amorphous films. Their optical transmission was demonstrated by optical near field of guided modes and optical losses were measured and discussed.
