Over the past decade, several millimeter interferometer programs have mapped the nearby star-forming galaxy M51 at a spatial resolution of ${\le}170$ pc. This study combines observations from three major programs: the PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS), the SMA M51 large program (SMA-PAWS), and the Surveying the Whirlpool at Arcseconds with NOEMA (SWAN). The dataset includes the (1-0) and (2-1) rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O isotopologues. The observations cover the $r{<}\rm 3\,kpc$ region including center and part of the disk, thereby ensuring strong detections of the weaker $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O lines. All observations are convolved in this analysis to an angular resolution of 4$''$, corresponding to a physical scale of ${\sim}$170 pc. We investigate empirical line ratio relations and quantitatively evaluate molecular gas conditions such as temperature, density, and the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$). We employ two approaches to study the molecular gas conditions: (i) assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE) to analytically determine the CO column density and $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and (ii) using non-LTE modeling with RADEX to fit physical conditions to observed CO isotopologue intensities. We find that the $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ values {in the center and along the inner spiral arm} are $\sim$0.5 dex (LTE) and ${\sim}$0.1 dex (non-LTE) below the Milky Way inner disk value. The average non-LTE $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is $2.4{\pm}0.5$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$. While both methods show dispersion due to underlying assumptions, the scatter is larger for LTE-derived values. We present a near infrared (NIR) candidate star cluster catalog for the central kiloparsec of M82 based on new JWST NIRCam images. We identify star cluster candidates using the F250M filter, finding 1357 star cluster candidates with stellar masses $>10^4$ M$_\odot$. Compared to previous optical catalogs, nearly all (87%) of the candidates we identify are new. The star cluster candidates have a median intrinsic cluster radius of $\approx$1 pc and have stellar masses up to $10^6$ M$_\odot$. By comparing the color-color diagram to dust-free yggdrasil stellar population models, we estimate that the star cluster candidates have A$_{\rm V}\sim3-24$ mag, corresponding to A$_{\rm 2.5\mu m}\sim0.3-2.1$ mag. There is still appreciable dust extinction towards these clusters into the NIR. We measure the stellar masses of the star cluster candidates, assuming ages of 0 and 8 Myr. The slope of the resulting cluster mass function is $\beta=1.9\pm0.2$, in excellent agreement with studies of star clusters in other galaxies., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJL

The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is crucial to the evolution of the interstellar medium in galaxies. We investigate the balance between the atomic ($\Sigma_{\rm HI}$) and molecular gas ($\Sigma_{\rm H2}$) surface densities in eight nearby star-forming galaxies using new high-quality observations from MeerKAT and ALMA (for HI and CO, respectively). We define the molecular gas ratio as $R_{\rm mol} = \Sigma_{\rm H2} / \Sigma_{\rm HI}$ and measure how it depends on local conditions in the galaxy disks using multi-wavelength observations. We find that, depending on the galaxy, HI is detected at $>3\sigma$ out to 20-120 kpc in galactocentric radius ($r_{\rm gal}$). The typical radius at which $\Sigma_{\rm HI}$ reaches 1~$\rm M_\odot~pc^{-2}$ is $r_{\rm HI}\approx22$~kpc, which corresponds to 1-3 times the optical radius ($r_{25}$). $R_{\rm mol}$ correlates best with the dynamical equilibrium pressure, P$_{\rm DE}$, among potential drivers studied, with a median correlation coefficient of $<\rho>=0.89$. Correlations between $R_{\rm mol}$ and star formation rate, total gas and stellar surface density, metallicity, and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$/P$_{\rm DE}$ are present but somewhat weaker. Our results also show a direct correlation between P$_{\rm DE}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, supporting self-regulation models. Quantitatively, we measure similar scalings as previous works and attribute the modest differences that we find to the effect of varying resolution and sensitivity. At $r_{\rm gal} {\gtrsim}0.4~r_{25}$, atomic gas dominates over molecular gas, and at the balance of these two gas phases, we find that the baryon mass is dominated by stars, with $\Sigma_{*} > 5~\Sigma_{\rm gas}$. The star formation rate (SFR) is tightly connected to the amount of dense gas in molecular clouds. However, it is not fully understood how the relationship between dense molecular gas and star formation varies within galaxies and in different morphological environments. In this work, we study dense gas and star formation in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4321 to test how the amount of dense gas and its ability to form stars varies with environmental properties at 260 pc scales. We present new ALMA observations of HCN(1-0) line emission. Combined with existing CO(2-1) observations from ALMA, and H-alpha from MUSE, as well as F2100W from JWST to trace the SFR, we measure the HCN/CO line ratio, a proxy for the dense gas fraction and SFR/HCN, a proxy for the star formation efficiency of the dense gas. Towards the centre of the galaxy, HCN/CO systematically increases while SFR/HCN decreases, but these ratios stay roughly constant throughout the disc. Spiral arms, interarm regions, and bar ends show similar HCN/CO and SFR/HCN. On the bar, there is a significantly lower SFR/HCN at a similar HCN/CO. We conclude that the centres of galaxies show the strongest environmental influence on dense gas and star formation, suggesting either that clouds couple strongly to the surrounding pressure or that HCN is tracing more of the bulk molecular gas that is less efficiently converted into stars. On the contrary, across the disc of NGC 4321, where the ISM pressure is typically low, SFR/HCN does not show large variations (< 0.3 dex) in agreement with Galactic observations of molecular clouds. Understanding the 3D structure of the Milky Way is a crucial step in deriving properties of the star-forming regions, as well as the Galaxy as a whole. We present a novel 3D map of the Milky Way plane that extends to 10 kpc distance from the Sun. We leverage the wealth of information in the near-IR APOGEE dataset and combine that with our state-of-the-art 3D mapping technique using Bayesian statistics and the Gaussian process to provide a large-scale 3D map of the dust in the Milky Way. Our map stretches across 10 kpc along both the X and Y axes, and 750 pc in the Z direction, perpendicular to the Galactic plane. Our results reveal multi-scale over-densities as well as large cavities in the Galactic plane and shed new light on the Galactic structure and spiral arms. We also provide a catalogue of large molecular clouds identified by our map with accurate distance and volume density estimates. Utilising volume densities derived from this map, we explore mass distribution across various Galactocentric radii. A general decline towards the outer Galaxy is observed, followed by local peaks, some aligning with established features like the Molecular Ring and segments of the spiral arms. Moreover, this work explores extragalactic observational effects on derived properties of molecular clouds by demonstrating the potential biases arising from column density measurements in inferring properties of these regions, and opens exciting avenues for further exploration and analysis, offering a deeper perspective on the complex processes that shape our galaxy and beyond., Comment: Revised version after first referee report; to appear in A&A. Convection-permitting models (CPMs) enable the representation of meteorological variables at horizontal high resolution spatial scales (higher than 4 km), where convection plays a significant role. Physical schemes need to be evaluated considering factors in the studied region such as orography and climate variability. This study investigates the sensitivity of the WRF model as CPM to the use of different physics schemes on Andalusia, a complex orography region in southern Iberian Peninsula (IP). A set of 1-year WRF simulations was completed based on two one-way nested domains: the parent domain (d01) spanning the entire IP with 5 km spatial resolution and the nested domain (d02) for the region of Andalusia at 1 km of spatial resolution. 12 physic schemes were examined from combinations of microphysics (MP) schemes including THOMPSON, WRF single moment 6-class (WSM6), and WRF single moment 7-class (WSM7), and different options for the convection in d01, the Grell 3D (G3), Grell-Freitas (GF), Kain-Fritsch (KF), and deactivated cumulus parameterization (OFF). The simulated precipitation and 2-m temperature for the year 2018, a very wet year, were compared with observational datasets to determine the optimal WRF configuration, including point-to-point and station-point comparisons at different time aggregations. In general, greater differences were shown when comparing the results of convection schemes in d01. Simulations completed with GF or OFF presented better performance compared to the reference datasets. Concerning the MP, although THOMPSON showed a better fit in high mountain areas, it generally presents a worse agreement with the reference datasets. In terms of temperature, the results were very similar and, therefore, the selection of the best configuration was based mainly on the precipitation results with the WSM7-GF scheme being suitable for Andalusia region.

Studying molecular gas in nearby galaxies using hydrogen cyanide (HCN) as a tracer for higher densities than CO emission still poses a significant challenge. Even though several galaxies have HCN maps on a few kpc scales, higher-resolution maps are still required. Our goal is to examine the contrast in intensity between two tracers that probe different density regimes - HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1) ratio - and their kinematics across NGC 253. By utilizing the advanced capabilities of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we can map these features at high resolution across a large field of view and uncover the nature of such dense gas in extragalactic systems. We present new ALMA Atacama Compact Array and Total Power (ACA+TP) observations of the HCN emission across NGC 253, covering the inner 8.6' of the galaxy disk at 300 pc scales. We analyze the integrated intensity and mean velocity of HCN and CO along each line of sight and use SCOUSE software to perform spectral decomposition, which considers each velocity component separately. Molecular gas traced by HCN piles up in a ring-like structure at a radius of 2 kpc. The HCN emission is enhanced by 2 orders of magnitude in the central 2 kpc regions, beyond which its intensity decreases with increasing galactocentric distance. The number of components in the HCN spectra shows a robust environmental dependence, with multiple velocity features across the center and bar. We have identified an increase in the HCN/CO ratio in these regions, corresponding to a velocity component likely associated with a molecular outflow. We have also discovered that the ratio between the total infrared luminosity and dense gas mass, which indicates the star formation efficiency of dense gas, is anti-correlated with the molecular gas surface density up to approximately 200 Msul/pc^2. We present new observations of the central 1 kpc of the M 82 starburst obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) near-infrared camera (NIRCam) instrument at a resolution ~0.05"-0.1" (~1-2 pc). The data comprises images in three mostly continuum filters (F140M, F250M, and F360M), and filters that contain [FeII] (F164N), H2 v=1-0 (F212N), and the 3.3 um PAH feature (F335M). We find prominent plumes of PAH emission extending outward from the central starburst region, together with a network of complex filamentary substructure and edge-brightened bubble-like features. The structure of the PAH emission closely resembles that of the ionized gas, as revealed in Paschen alpha and free-free radio emission. We discuss the origin of the structure, and suggest the PAHs are embedded in a combination of neutral, molecular, and photoionized gas., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

The exquisite angular resolution and sensitivity of JWST is opening a new window for our understanding of the Universe. In nearby galaxies, JWST observations are revolutionizing our understanding of the first phases of star formation and the dusty interstellar medium. Nineteen local galaxies spanning a range of properties and morphologies across the star-forming main sequence have been observed as part of the PHANGS-JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program at spatial scales of $\sim$5-50pc. Here, we describe pjpipe, an image processing pipeline developed for the PHANGS-JWST program that wraps around and extends the official JWST pipeline. We release this pipeline to the community as it contains a number of tools generally useful for JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations. Particularly for extended sources, pjpipe products provide significant improvements over mosaics from the MAST archive in terms of removing instrumental noise in NIRCam data, background flux matching, and calibration of relative and absolute astrometry. We show that slightly smoothing F2100W MIRI data to 0.9" (degrading the resolution by about 30 percent) reduces the noise by a factor of $\approx$3. We also present the first public release (DR1.1.0) of the pjpipe processed eight-band 2-21 $\mu$m imaging for all nineteen galaxies in the PHANGS-JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program. We study young massive clusters (YMCs) in their embedded "infant" phase with $\sim0.\!^{\prime\prime}1$ ALMA, HST, and JWST observations targeting the central starburst ring in NGC 3351, a nearby Milky Way analog galaxy. Our new ALMA data reveal 18 bright and compact (sub-)millimeter continuum sources, of which 8 have counterparts in JWST images and only 6 have counterparts in HST images. Based on the ALMA continuum and molecular line data, as well as ancillary measurements for the HST and JWST counterparts, we identify 14 sources as infant star clusters with high stellar and/or gas masses (${\sim}10^5\;\mathrm{M_\odot}$), small radii (${\lesssim}\,5\;\mathrm{pc}$), large escape velocities ($6{-}10\;\mathrm{km/s}$), and short free-fall times ($0.5{-}1\;\mathrm{Myr}$). Their multiwavelength properties motivate us to divide them into four categories, likely corresponding to four evolutionary stages from starless clumps to exposed HII region-cluster complexes. Leveraging age estimates for HST-identified clusters in the same region, we infer an evolutionary timeline going from $\sim$1-2 Myr before cluster formation as starless clumps, to $\sim$4-6 Myr after as exposed HII region-cluster complexes. Finally, we show that the YMCs make up a substantial fraction of recent star formation across the ring, exhibit an non-uniform azimuthal distribution without a very coherent evolutionary trend along the ring, and are capable of driving large-scale gas outflows., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures; ApJ accepted

We present ALMA observations of two dense gas tracers, HCN(1-0) and HCO$^{+}$(1-0), for three galaxies in the green valley and two galaxies on the star-forming main sequence with comparable molecular gas fractions as traced by the CO(1-0) emissions, selected from the ALMaQUEST survey. We investigate whether the deficit of molecular gas star formation efficiency (SFE$_{\rm mol}$) that leads to the low specific star formation rate in these green valley galaxies is due to a lack of dense gas (characterized by the dense gas fraction $f_{\rm dense}$) or the low star formation efficiency of dense gas (SFE$_{\rm dense}$). We find that SFE$_{\rm mol}$ as traced by the CO emissions, when considering both star-forming and retired spaxels together, is tightly correlated with SFE$_{\rm dense}$ and depends only weakly on $f_{\rm dense}$. The specific star formation rate (sSFR) on kpc scales is primarily driven by SFE$_{\rm mol}$ and SFE$_{\rm dense}$, followed by the dependence on $f_{\rm mol}$, and is least correlated with $f_{\rm dense}$ or the dense-to-stellar mass ratio ($R_{\rm dense}$). When compared with other works in the literature, we find that our green valley sample shows lower global SFE$_{\rm mol}$ as well as lower SFE$_{\rm dense}$ while exhibiting similar dense gas fractions when compared to star-forming and starburst galaxies. We conclude that the star formation of the 3 green valley galaxies with a normal abundance of molecular gas is suppressed mainly due to the reduced SFE$_{\rm dense}$ rather than the lack of dense gas., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, ApJ accepted

Galactic centers are very dynamically active environments, often harbouring a nuclear star cluster and supermassive black hole at their cores. Binaries in these environments are subject to strong tidal fields that can efficiently torque its orbit, exciting near unity eccentricities that ultimately lead to their merger. In turn, frequent close interactions with passing stars impulsively perturb the orbit of the binary, generally softening their orbit until their evaporation, potentially hindering the role of tides to drive these mergers. In this work, we study the evolution of compact object binaries in the galactic center and their merger rates, focusing for the first time on the combined effect of the cluster's tidal field and flyby interactions. We find a significant synergy between both processes, where merger rates increase by a factor of ~10-30 compared to models in which only flybys or tides are taken into account. This synergy is a consequence of the persistent tides-driven eccentricity excitation that is enhanced by the gradual diffusion of $j_z$ driven by flybys. The merger efficiency peaks when the diffusion rate is ~10-100 slower than the tides-driven torquing. Added to this synergy, we also find that the gradual softening of the binary can lift the relativistic quenching of initially tight binaries, otherwise unable to reach extreme eccentricities, and thus expanding the available phase-space for mergers. Cumulatively, we conclude that despite the gradual softening of binaries due to flybys, these greatly enhance their merger rates in galaxy centers by promoting the tidal field-driven eccentricity excitation., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. We present the first results from "Surveying the Whirlpool at Arcseconds with NOEMA" (SWAN), an IRAM Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA)+30m large program that maps emission from several molecular lines at 90 and 110 GHz in the iconic nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M~51 at cloud-scale resolution ($\sim$3\arcsec=125\,pc). As part of this work, we have obtained the first sensitive cloud-scale map of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) of the inner $\sim5\,\times 7\,$kpc of a normal star-forming galaxy, which we compare to HCN(1-0) and CO(1-0) emission to test their ability in tracing dense, star-forming gas. The average N$_2$H$^+$-to-HCN line ratio of our total FoV is $0.20\pm0.09$, with strong regional variations of a factor of $\gtrsim 2$ throughout the disk, including the south-western spiral arm and the center. The central $\sim1\,$kpc exhibits elevated HCN emission compared to N$_2$H$^+$, probably caused by AGN-driven excitation effects. We find that HCN and N$_2$H$^+$ are strongly super-linearily correlated in intensity ($\rho_\mathrm{Sp}\sim 0.8$), with an average scatter of $\sim0.14\,$dex over a span of $\gtrsim 1.5\,$dex in intensity. When excluding the central region, the data is best described by a power-law of exponent $1.2$, indicating that there is more N$_2$H$^+$ per unit HCN in brighter regions. Our observations demonstrate that the HCN-to-CO line ratio is a sensitive tracer of gas density in agreement with findings of recent Galactic studies which utilize N$_2$H$^+$. The peculiar line ratios present near the AGN and the scatter of the power-law fit in the disk suggest that in addition to a first-order correlation with gas density, second-order physics (such as optical depth, gas temperature) or chemistry (abundance variations) are encoded in the N$_2$H$^+$/CO, HCN/CO and N$_2$H$^+$/HCN ratios., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 6 pages, 3 figures (+ Appendix 4 pages, 2 figures)

The low-$J$ rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO are commonly used to trace the distribution of molecular gas in galaxies. Their ratios are sensitive to excitation and physical conditions in the molecular gas. Spatially resolved studies of CO ratios are still sparse and affected by flux calibration uncertainties, especially since most do not have high angular resolution or do not have short-spacing information and hence miss any diffuse emission. We compare the low-$J$ CO ratios across the disk of two massive, star-forming spiral galaxies NGC2903 and NGC3627 to investigate whether and how local environments drive excitation variations at GMC scales. We use Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the three lowest-$J$ CO transitions at a common angular resolution of 4$''$ (190pc). We measure median line ratios of $R_{21}=0.67^{+0.13}_{-0.11}$, $R_{32}=0.33^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$, and $R_{31}=0.24^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$ across the full disk of NGC3627. We see clear CO line ratio variation across the galaxy consistent with changes in temperature and density of the molecular gas. In particular, toward the center, $R_{21}$, $R_{32}$, and $R_{31}$ increase by 35\%, 50\%, and 66\%, respectively compared to their average disk values. The overall line ratio trends suggest that CO(3-2) is more sensitive to changes in the excitation conditions than the two lower-$J$ transitions. Furthermore, we find a similar radial $R_{32}$ trend in NGC2903, albite a larger disk-wide average of $\langle R_{32}\rangle=0.47^{+0.14}_{-0.08}$. Determining how galactic environment, especially the high gas densities and complex dynamics in bar-fed galaxy centers, alters the star formation efficiency (SFE) of molecular gas is critical to understanding galaxy evolution. However, these same physical or dynamical effects also alter the emissivity properties of CO, leading to variations in the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_\rm{CO}$) that impact the assessment of the gas column densities and thus of the SFE. To address such issues, we investigate the dependence of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ on local CO velocity dispersion at 150-pc scales using a new set of dust-based $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ measurements, and propose a new $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ prescription that accounts for CO emissivity variations across galaxies. Based on this prescription, we estimate the SFE in a sample of 65 galaxies from the PHANGS-ALMA survey. We find increasing SFE towards high surface density regions like galaxy centers, while using a constant or metallicity-based $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ results in a more homogeneous SFE throughout the centers and disks. Our prescription further reveals a mean molecular gas depletion time of 700 Myr in the centers of barred galaxies, which is overall 3-4 times shorter than in non-barred galaxy centers or the disks. Across the galaxy disks, the depletion time is consistently around 2-3 Gyr regardless of the choice of $\alpha_\rm{CO}$ prescription. It has been shown in previous publications that the TNG100 simulation quantitatively reproduces the observed reduction in each of the total atomic and total molecular hydrogen gas for galaxies within massive halos, i.e.~dense environments. In this Letter, we study how well TNG50 reproduces the resolved effects of a Virgo-like cluster environment on the gas surface densities of satellite galaxies with $m_* > \! 10^9\,{\rm M}_\odot$ and ${\rm SFR} \! > 0.05\,{\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. We select galaxies in the simulation that are analogous to those in the HERACLES and VERTICO surveys, and mock-observe them to the common specifications of the data. Although TNG50 does not quantitatively match the observed gas surface densities in the centers of galaxies, the simulation does qualitatively reproduce the trends of gas truncation and central density suppression seen in VERTICO in both HI and H$_2$. It is proven that the rotation of the spin of a polarized neutron is accompanied by a net nuclear force upon it. This force arises from the weak nuclear self-interaction of its constituent quarks, whose chiral nature induces the transfer of a net momentum to the fields of Z and W-bosons. This effect is linear in Fermi's constant. We study how environment regulates the star formation cycle of 33 Virgo Cluster satellite galaxies on 720 parsec scales. We present the first resolved star-forming main sequence for cluster galaxies, dividing the sample based on their global HI properties and comparing to a control sample of field galaxies. HI-poor cluster galaxies have reduced star formation rate (SFR) surface densities with respect to both HI-normal cluster and field galaxies (0.5 dex), suggesting that mechanisms regulating the global HI content are responsible for quenching local star formation. We demonstrate that the observed quenching in HI-poor galaxies is caused by environmental processes such as ram pressure stripping (RPS) simultaneously reducing molecular gas surface density and star formation efficiency (SFE), compared to regions in HI-normal systems (by 0.38 and 0.22 dex, respectively). We observe systematically elevated SFRs that are driven by increased molecular gas surface densities at fixed stellar mass surface density in the outskirts of early-stage RPS galaxies, while SFE remains unchanged with respect to the field sample. We quantify how RPS and starvation affect the star formation cycle of inner and outer galaxy discs as they are processed by the cluster. We show both are effective quenching mechanisms with the key difference being that RPS acts upon the galaxy outskirts while starvation regulates the star formation cycle throughout disc, including within the truncation radius. Nitrogen hydrides such as NH$_3$ and N$_2$H$^+$ are widely used by Galactic observers to trace the cold dense regions of the interstellar medium. In external galaxies, because of limited sensitivity, HCN has become the most common tracer of dense gas over large parts of galaxies. We provide the first systematic measurements of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) across different environments of an external spiral galaxy, NGC6946. We find a strong correlation ($r>0.98,p<0.01$) between the HCN(1-0) and N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) intensities across the inner $\sim8\mathrm{kpc}$ of the galaxy, at kiloparsec scales. This correlation is equally strong between the ratios N$_2$H$^+$(1-0)/CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0), tracers of dense gas fractions ($f_\mathrm{dense}$). We measure an average intensity ratio of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0)/HCN(1-0)$=0.15\pm0.02$ over our set of five IRAM-30m pointings. These trends are further supported by existing measurements for Galactic and extragalactic sources. This narrow distribution in the average ratio suggests that the observed systematic trends found in kiloparsec-scale extragalactic studies of $f_\mathrm{dense}$ and the efficiency of dense gas (SFE$_\mathrm{dense}$) would not change if we employed N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) as a more direct tracer of dense gas. At kiloparsec scales our results indicate that the HCN(1-0) emission can be used to predict the expected N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) over those regions. Our results suggest that, even if HCN(1-0) and N$_2$H$^+$(1-0) trace different density regimes within molecular clouds, subcloud differences average out at kiloparsec scales, yielding the two tracers proportional to each other., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the first systematic study of the molecular gas and star formation efficiency in a sample of ten narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected to have X-ray Ultra Fast Outflows and, therefore, to potentially show AGN feedback effects. CO observations were obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope in six galaxies and from the literature for four galaxies. We derived the stellar mass, star formation rate, AGN and FIR dust luminosities by fitting the multi-band spectral energy distributions with the CIGALE code. Most of the galaxies in our sample lie above the main sequence (MS) and the molecular depletion time is one to two orders of magnitude shorter than the one typically measured in local star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we found a promising correlation between the star formation efficiency and the Eddington ratio, as well as a tentative correlation with the AGN luminosity. The role played by the AGN activity in the regulation of star formation within the host galaxies of our sample remains uncertain (little or no effect? positive feedback?). We analyze cold-gas distributions in Virgo cluster galaxies using resolved CO(2-1) (tracing molecular hydrogen, H2) and HI observations from the Virgo Environment Traced In CO (VERTICO) and the VLA Imaging of Virgo in Atomic Gas (VIVA) surveys. From a theoretical perspective, it is expected that environmental processes in clusters will have a stronger influence on diffuse atomic gas compared to the relatively dense molecular gas component, and that these environmental perturbations can compress the cold interstellar medium in cluster galaxies leading to elevated star formation. In this work we observationally test these predictions for star-forming satellite galaxies within the Virgo cluster. We divide our Virgo galaxy sample into HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated classes and show, unsurprisingly, that the HI-tailed galaxies have the largest quantitative HI asymmetries. We also compare to a control sample of non-cluster galaxies and find that Virgo galaxies, on average, have HI asymmetries that are 40 +/- 10 per cent larger than the control. There is less separation between control, HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated galaxies in terms of H2 asymmetries, and on average, Virgo galaxies have H2 asymmetries that are only marginally (20 +/- 10 per cent) larger than the control sample. We find a weak correlation between HI and H2 asymmetries over our entire sample, but a stronger correlation for those specific galaxies being strongly impacted by environmental perturbations. Finally, we divide the discs of the HI-tailed Virgo galaxies into a leading half and trailing half according to the observed tail direction. We find evidence for excess molecular gas mass on the leading halves of the disc. Mapping molecular line emission beyond the bright low-J CO transitions is still challenging in extragalactic studies, even with the latest generation of (sub-)mm interferometers, such as ALMA and NOEMA. We summarise and test a spectral stacking method that has been used in the literature to recover low-intensity molecular line emission, such as HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and even fainter lines in external galaxies. The goal is to study the capabilities and limitations of the stacking technique when applied to imaged interferometric observations. The core idea of spectral stacking is to align spectra of the low S/N spectral lines to a known velocity field calculated from a higher S/N line expected to share the kinematics of the fainter line, e.g., CO(1-0) or 21-cm emission. Then these aligned spectra can be coherently averaged to produce potentially high S/N spectral stacks. Here, we use imaged simulated interferometric and total power observations at different signal-to-noise levels, based on real CO observations. For the combined interferometric and total power data, we find that the spectral stacking technique is capable of recovering the integrated intensities even at low S/N levels across most of the region where the high S/N prior is detected. However, when stacking interferometer-only data for low S/N emission, the stacks can miss up to 50% of the emission from the fainter line. A key result of this analysis is that the spectral stacking method is able to recover the true mean line intensities in low S/N cubes and to accurately measure the statistical significance of the recovered lines. We present new HI observations of the nearby massive spiral galaxy M83, taken with the VLA at $21^{\prime\prime}$ angular resolution ($\approx500$ pc) of an extended ($\sim$1.5 deg$^2$) 10-point mosaic combined with GBT single dish data. We study the super-extended HI disk of M83 (${\sim}$50 kpc in radius), in particular disc kinematics, rotation and the turbulent nature of the atomic interstellar medium. We define distinct regions in the outer disk ($r_{\rm gal}>$central optical disk), including ring, southern area, and southern and northern arm. We examine HI gas surface density, velocity dispersion and non-circular motions in the outskirts, which we compare to the inner optical disk. We find an increase of velocity dispersion ($\sigma_v$) towards the pronounced HI ring, indicative of more turbulent HI gas. Additionally, we report over a large galactocentric radius range (until $r_{\rm gal}{\sim}$50 kpc) that $\sigma_v$ is slightly larger than thermal (i.e. $>8$km s$^{-1}$ ). We find that a higher star formation rate (as traced by FUV emission) is not always necessarily associated with a higher HI velocity dispersion, suggesting that radial transport could be a dominant driver for the enhanced velocity dispersion. We further find a possible branch that connects the extended HI disk to the dwarf irregular galaxy UGCA365, that deviates from the general direction of the northern arm. Lastly, we compare mass flow rate profiles (based on 2D and 3D tilted ring models) and find evidence for outflowing gas at r$_{\rm gal}$ $\sim$2 kpc, inflowing gas at r$_{\rm gal}$ $\sim$5.5 kpc and outflowing gas at r$_{\rm gal}$ $\sim$14 kpc. The quenching of cluster satellite galaxies is inextricably linked to the suppression of their cold interstellar medium (ISM) by environmental mechanisms. While the removal of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at large radii is well studied, how the environment impacts the remaining gas in the centres of galaxies, which are dominated by molecular gas, is less clear. Using new observations from the Virgo Environment traced in CO survey (VERTICO) and archival HI data, we study the HI and molecular gas within the optical discs of Virgo cluster galaxies on 1.2-kpc scales with spatially resolved scaling relations between stellar (${\Sigma}_{\star}$), HI (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$), and molecular gas (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$) surface densities. Adopting HI deficiency as a measure of environmental impact, we find evidence that, in addition to removing the HI at large radii, the cluster processes also lower the average ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ of the remaining gas even in the central 1.2 kpc. The impact on molecular gas is comparatively weaker than on the HI, and we show that the lower ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ gas is removed first. In the most HI-deficient galaxies, however, we find evidence that environmental processes reduce the typical ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ of the remaining gas by nearly a factor of 3. We find no evidence for environment-driven elevation of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ or ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ in HI-deficient galaxies. Using the ratio of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$-to-${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ in individual regions, we show that changes in the ISM physical conditions, estimated using the total gas surface density and midplane hydrostatic pressure, cannot explain the observed reduction in molecular gas content. We measure empirical relationships between the local star formation rate (SFR) and properties of the star-forming molecular gas on 1.5 kpc scales across 80 nearby galaxies. These relationships, commonly referred to as "star formation laws," aim at predicting the local SFR surface density from various combinations of molecular gas surface density, galactic orbital time, molecular cloud free-fall time, and the interstellar medium dynamical equilibrium pressure. Leveraging a multiwavelength database built for the PHANGS survey, we measure these quantities consistently across all galaxies and quantify systematic uncertainties stemming from choices of SFR calibrations and the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factors. The star formation laws we examine show 0.3-0.4 dex of intrinsic scatter, among which the molecular Kennicutt-Schmidt relation shows a $\sim$10% larger scatter than the other three. The slope of this relation ranges $\beta\approx0.9{-}1.2$, implying that the molecular gas depletion time remains roughly constant across the environments probed in our sample. The other relations have shallower slopes ($\beta\approx0.6{-}1.0$), suggesting that the star formation efficiency (SFE) per orbital time, the SFE per free-fall time, and the pressure-to-SFR surface density ratio (i.e., the feedback yield) may vary systematically with local molecular gas and SFR surface densities. Last but not least, the shapes of the star formation laws depend sensitively on methodological choices. Different choices of SFR calibrations can introduce systematic uncertainties of at least 10-15% in the star formation law slopes and 0.15-0.25 dex in their normalization, while the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factors can additionally produce uncertainties of 20-25% for the slope and 0.10-0.20 dex for the normalization., Comment: 10 pages main text + 2 appendices. Carbon monoxide (CO) emission is the most widely used tracer of the bulk molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) in extragalactic studies. The CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, links the observed CO emission to the total molecular gas mass. However, no single prescription perfectly describes the variation of $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ across all environments across galaxies as a function of metallicity, molecular gas opacity, line excitation, and other factors. Using resolved spectral line observations of CO and its isotopologues, we can constrain the molecular gas conditions and link them to a variation in the conversion factor. We present new IRAM 30-m 1mm and 3mm line observations of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O} across the nearby galaxy M101. Based on the CO isotopologue line ratios, we find that selective nucleosynthesis and opacity changes are the main drivers of the variation in the line emission across the galaxy. Furthermore, we estimated $\alpha_{\rm CO(1-0)}$ using different approaches, including (i) the dust mass surface density derived from far-IR emission as an independent tracer of the total gas surface density and (ii) LTE-based measurements using the optically thin $^{13}$CO(1-0) intensity. We find an average value of $\alpha_{\rm CO}=4.4{\pm}0.9\rm\,M_\odot\,pc^{-2}(K\,km\,s^{-1})^{-1}$ across the galaxy, with a decrease by a factor of 10 toward the 2 kpc central region. In contrast, we find LTE-based values are lower by a factor of 2-3 across the disk relative to the dust-based result. Accounting for $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ variations, we found significantly reduced molecular gas depletion time by a factor 10 in the galaxy's center. In conclusion, our result suggests implications for commonly derived scaling relations, such as an underestimation of the slope of the Kennicutt Schmidt law, if $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ variations are not accounted for., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 25 pages, 15 figures

We use new HCN(1-0) data from the ALMOND (ACA Large-sample Mapping Of Nearby galaxies in Dense gas) survey to trace the kpc-scale molecular gas density structure and CO(2-1) data from PHANGS-ALMA to trace the bulk molecular gas across 25 nearby, star-forming galaxies. At 2.1 kpc scale, we measure the density-sensitive HCN/CO line ratio and the SFR/HCN ratio to trace the star formation efficiency in the denser molecular medium. At 150 pc scale, we measure structural and dynamical properties of the molecular gas via CO(2-1) line emission, which is linked to the lower resolution data using an intensity-weighted averaging method. We find positive correlations (negative) of HCN/CO (SFR/HCN) with the surface density, the velocity dispersion and the internal turbulent pressure of the molecular gas. These observed correlations agree with expected trends from turbulent models of star formation, which consider a single free-fall time gravitational collapse. Our results show that the kpc-scale HCN/CO line ratio is a powerful tool to trace the 150 pc scale average density distribution of the molecular clouds. Lastly, we find systematic variations of the SFR/HCN ratio with cloud-scale molecular gas properties, which are incompatible with a universal star formation efficiency. Overall, these findings show that mean molecular gas density, molecular cloud properties and star formation are closely linked in a coherent way, and observations of density-sensitive molecular gas tracers are a useful tool to analyse these variations, linking molecular gas physics to stellar output across galaxy discs., Comment: 48 pages, 40 figures

We present new HCN and HCO$^+$ ($J$=3-2) images of the nearby star-forming galaxies (SFGs) NGC 3351, NGC 3627, and NGC 4321. The observations, obtained with the Morita ALMA Compact Array, have a spatial resolution of $\sim$290-440 pc and resolve the inner $R_\textrm{gal} \lesssim$ 0.6-1 kpc of the targets, as well as the southern bar end of NGC 3627. We complement this data set with publicly available images of lower excitation lines of HCN, HCO$^+$, and CO and analyse the behaviour of a representative set of line ratios: HCN(3-2)/HCN(1-0), HCN(3-2)/HCO$^+$(3-2), HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1), and HCN(3-2)/CO(2-1). Most of these ratios peak at the galaxy centres and decrease outwards. We compare the HCN and HCO$^+$ observations with a grid of one-phase, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer models and find them compatible with models that predict subthermally excited and optically thick lines. We study the systematic variations of the line ratios across the targets as a function of the stellar surface density ($\Sigma_\textrm{star}$), the intensity-weighted CO(2-1) ($\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$), and the star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_\text{SFR}$). We find no apparent correlation with $\Sigma_\text{SFR}$, but positive correlations with the other two parameters, which are stronger in the case of $\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$. The HCN/CO-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ relations show $\lesssim$0.3 dex galaxy-to-galaxy offsets, with HCN(3-2)/CO(2-1)-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ being $\sim$2 times steeper than HCN(1-0)/CO(2-1). In contrast, the HCN(3-2)/HCN(1-0)-$\langle I_\text{CO}\rangle$ relation exhibits a tighter alignment between galaxies. We compare mid-infrared (mid-IR), extinction-corrected H$\alpha$, and CO (2-1) emission at 70--160 pc resolution in the first four PHANGS-JWST targets. We report correlation strengths, intensity ratios, and power law fits relating emission in JWST's F770W, F1000W, F1130W, and F2100W bands to CO and H$\alpha$. At these scales, CO and H$\alpha$ each correlate strongly with mid-IR emission, and these correlations are each stronger than the one relating CO to H$\alpha$ emission. This reflects that mid-IR emission simultaneously acts as a dust column density tracer, leading to the good match with the molecular gas-tracing CO, and as a heating tracer, leading to the good match with the H$\alpha$. By combining mid-IR, CO, and H$\alpha$ at scales where the overall correlation between cold gas and star formation begins to break down, we are able to separate these two effects. We model the mid-IR above $I_\nu = 0.5$~MJy sr$^{-1}$ at F770W, a cut designed to select regions where the molecular gas dominates the interstellar medium (ISM) mass. This bright emission can be described to first order by a model that combines a CO-tracing component and an H$\alpha$-tracing component. The best-fitting models imply that $\sim 50\%$ of the mid-IR flux arises from molecular gas heated by the diffuse interstellar radiation field, with the remaining $\sim 50\%$ associated with bright, dusty star forming regions. The PHANGS collaboration has been building a reference dataset for the multi-scale, multi-phase study of star formation and the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies. With the successful launch and commissioning of JWST, we can now obtain high-resolution infrared imaging to probe the youngest stellar populations and dust emission on the scales of star clusters and molecular clouds ($\sim$5-50 pc). In Cycle 1, PHANGS is conducting an 8-band imaging survey from 2-21$\mu$m of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. CO(2-1) mapping, optical integral field spectroscopy, and UV-optical imaging for all 19 galaxies have been obtained through large programs with ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and Hubble. PHANGS-JWST enables a full inventory of star formation, accurate measurement of the mass and age of star clusters, identification of the youngest embedded stellar populations, and characterization of the physical state of small dust grains. When combined with Hubble catalogs of $\sim$10,000 star clusters, MUSE spectroscopic mapping of $\sim$20,000 HII regions, and $\sim$12,000 ALMA-identified molecular clouds, it becomes possible to measure the timescales and efficiencies of the earliest phases of star formation and feedback, build an empirical model of the dependence of small dust grain properties on local ISM conditions, and test our understanding of how dust-reprocessed starlight traces star formation activity, all across a diversity of galactic environments. We present a high-resolution view of bubbles within The Phantom Galaxy (NGC 628); a nearby (~10Mpc), star-forming (~2Msun/yr), face-on (i~9deg) grand-design spiral galaxy. With new data obtained as part of the PHANGS-JWST treasury program, we perform a detailed case-study of two regions of interest, one of which contains the largest and most prominent bubble in the galaxy (The Phantom Void; over 1kpc in diameter), and the other being a smaller region that may be the precursor to such a large bubble (The Precursor Phantom Void). When comparing to matched resolution Halpha observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we see that the ionized gas is brightest in the shells of both bubbles, and is coincident with the youngest (~1Myr) and most massive (~100,000Msun) stellar associations. We also find an older generation (~20Myr) of stellar associations is present within the bubble of The Phantom Void. From our kinematic analysis of the HI, H2 (CO) and HII gas across The Phantom Void, we infer a high expansion speed of around 15 to 50km/s. The large size and high expansion speed of The Phantom Void suggest that the driving mechanism is sustained stellar feedback due to multiple mechanisms, where early feedback first cleared a bubble (as we observe now in The Precursor Phantom Void), and since then SNe have been exploding within the cavity, and have accelerated the shell. Finally, comparison to simulations shows a striking resemblance to our JWST observations, and suggests that such large-scale stellar feedback-driven bubbles should be common within other galaxies., Comment: 12 pages total, 8 figures, and 1 table. The first JWST observations of nearby galaxies have unveiled a rich population of bubbles that trace the stellar feedback mechanisms responsible for their creation. Studying these bubbles therefore allows us to chart the interaction between stellar feedback and the interstellar medium, and the larger galactic flows needed to regulate star formation processes globally. We present the first catalog of bubbles in NGC628, visually identified using MIRI F770W PHANGS-JWST observations, and use them to statistically evaluate bubble characteristics. We classify 1694 structures as bubbles with radii between 6-552 pc. Of these, 31% contain at least one smaller bubble at their edge, indicating that previous generations of star formation have a local impact on where new stars form. On large scales, most bubbles lie near a spiral arm, and their radii increase downstream compared to upstream. Furthermore, bubbles are elongated in a similar direction to the spiral arm ridge-line. These azimuthal trends demonstrate that star formation is intimately connected to the spiral arm passage. Finally, the bubble size distribution follows a power-law of index $p=-2.2\pm0.1$, which is slightly shallower than the theoretical value by 1-3.5$\sigma$ that did not include bubble mergers. The fraction of bubbles identified within the shells of larger bubbles suggests that bubble merging is a common process. Our analysis therefore allows us to quantify the number of star-forming regions that are influenced by an earlier generation, and the role feedback processes have in setting the global star formation rate. We combine JWST observations with ALMA CO and VLT-MUSE H$\alpha$ data to examine off-spiral arm star formation in the face-on, grand-design spiral galaxy NGC 628. We focus on the northern spiral arm, around a galactocentric radius of 3-4 kpc, and study two spurs. These form an interesting contrast, as one is CO-rich and one CO-poor, and they have a maximum azimuthal offset in MIRI 21$\mu$m and MUSE H$\alpha$ of around 40$^\circ$ (CO-rich) and 55$^\circ$ (CO-poor) from the spiral arm. The star formation rate is higher in the regions of the spurs near to spiral arms, but the star formation efficiency appears relatively constant. Given the spiral pattern speed and rotation curve of this galaxy and assuming material exiting the arms undergoes purely circular motion, these offsets would be reached in 100-150 Myr, significantly longer than the 21$\mu$m and H$\alpha$ star formation timescales (both <10 Myr). The invariance of the star formation efficiency in the spurs versus the spiral arms indicates massive star formation is not only triggered in spiral arms, and cannot simply occur in the arms and then drift away from the wave pattern. These early JWST results show that in-situ star formation likely occurs in the spurs, and that the observed young stars are not simply the `leftovers' of stellar birth in the spiral arms. In this VERTICO science paper we aim to study how the star formation process depends on galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and the molecular gas surface density, also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. We use new ACA and TP observations from the VERTICO-ALMA Large Program at 720pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO(2-1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival observations, we estimate the parameters of the KS relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N=0.97+/-0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86Gyr for our full sample, in agreement with previous work in isolated star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find KS slopes ranging between 0.69 and 1.40, and typical star formation efficiencies (SFE) that can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ~4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ~0.20dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42dex scatter. We find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. While the molecular gas content in Virgo cluster galaxies appears to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. Challenging space missions include those at very low altitudes, where the atmosphere is source of aerodynamic drag on the spacecraft that finally defines the missions lifetime unless way to compensate for it is provided. This environment is named Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) and is defined for $h<450~km$. In addition to the satellite's aerodynamic design, to extend the lifetime of such missions an efficient propulsion system is required. One solution is Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) that collects atmospheric particles to be used as propellant for an electric thruster. The system would minimize the requirement of limited propellant availability and can also be applied to any planetary body with atmosphere, enabling new missions at low altitude ranges for longer times. One of the objectives of the H2020 DISCOVERER project, is the development of an intake and an electrode-less plasma thruster for an ABEP system. The article describes the characteristics of intake design and the respective final deigns providing collection efficiencies up to $94\%$. On the other side, the radio frequency (RF) Helicon-based plasma thruster (IPT) developed at IRS, is hereby presented as well, while its performances are being evaluated, the thruster has been operated with single atmospheric species as propellant, and has highlighted very low input power requirement for operation at comparable mass flow rates $P\sim 60~W$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2106.15912

Operating satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) benefits the already expanding New Space industry in applications including Earth Observation and beyond. However, long-term operations at such low altitudes require propulsion systems to compensate for the large aerodynamic drag forces. When using conventional propulsion systems, the amount of storable propellant limits the maximum mission lifetime. The latter can be avoided by employing Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) system, which collects the residual atmospheric particles and uses them as propellant for an electric thruster. Thus, the requirement of on-board propellant storage can ideally be nullified. At the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) of the University of Stuttgart, an intake, and a RF Helicon-based Plasma Thruster (IPT) for ABEP system are developed within the Horizons 2020 funded DISCOVERER project. In order to assess possible future use cases, this paper proposes and analyzes several novel ABEP based mission scenarios. Beginning with technology demonstration mission in VLEO, more complex mission scenarios are derived and discussed in detail. These include, amongst others, orbit maintenance around Mars as well as refuelling and space tug missions. The results show that the ABEP system is not only able to compensate drag for orbit maintenance but also capable of performing orbital maneuvers and collect propellant for applications such as Space Tug and Refuelling. We measure the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, $R_{\rm mol}$, and the star formation rate (SFR) per unit molecular gas mass, SFE$_{\rm mol}$, in 38 nearby galaxies selected from the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey. We determine their scale-lengths for the molecular and stellar components and find a roughly 3:5 ratio between them compared to $\sim$1:1 in field galaxies, indicating that the CO emission is more centrally concentrated than the stars. We compute $R_{\rm mol}$ as a function of different physical quantities. In this VERTICO early science paper we explore in detail how environmental mechanisms, identified in HI, affect the resolved properties of molecular gas reservoirs in cluster galaxies. The molecular gas is probed using ALMA ACA (+TP) observations of 12CO(2-1) in 51 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster (of which 49 are detected), all of which are included in the VIVA HI survey. The sample spans a stellar mass range of 9 < log M*/Msol < 11. We study molecular gas radial profiles, isodensity radii, and surface densities as a function of galaxy HI deficiency and morphology. There is a weak correlation between global HI and H2 deficiencies, and resolved properties of molecular gas correlate with HI deficiency: galaxies that have large HI deficiencies have relatively steep and truncated molecular gas radial profiles, which is due to the removal of low-surface density molecular gas on the outskirts.
