Abstract

Cosmic dust plays a dominant role in the universe, especially in the formation of stars and planetary systems. Furthermore, the surface of cosmic dust grains is the bench-work where molecular hydrogen and simple organic compounds are formed. We manipulate individual dust particles in water solution by contactless and non-invasive techniques such as standard and Raman tweezers, to characterize their response to mechanical effects of light (optical forces and torques) and to determine their mineral compositions. Moreover, we show accurate optical force calculations in the T-matrix formalism highlighting the key role of composition and complex morphology in optical trapping of cosmic dust particles.This opens perspectives for future applications of optical tweezers in curation facilities for sample return missions or in extraterrestrial environments.

Abstract

Optomechanics deals with the control and applications of mechanical effects of light that stems from the redistribution of photon momenta in light scattering. Here, we investigate, analytically and numerically, optical forces on polarizable particles in proximity of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. We look at the general features of the repulsive-attractive optomechanics from the nano to the microscale exploiting different theoretical methods (dipole approximation, finite elements calculations, transition (T-)matrix). We discuss the role of realistic layered materials, as our ENZ substrate, on optical forces and analyze the influence of composition and shape by studying a range of complex particles (dielectric, core-shell, plasmonic ellipsoids). Physical insights into the results are discussed and future research directions are forecasted. Our results provide new possibilities in exploiting engineered materials and surfaces for the manipulation and tailoring of light-induced forces in optomechanics., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Optical tweezers are powerful tools based on focused laser beams. They are able to trap, manipulate and investigate a wide range of microscopic and nanoscopic particles in different media, such as liquids, air, and vacuum. Key applications of this contactless technique have been developed in many fields. Despite this progress, optical trapping applications to planetary exploration is still to be developed. Here we describe how optical tweezers can be used to trap and characterize extraterrestrial particulate matter. In particular, we exploit light scattering theory in the T-matrix formalism to calculate radiation pressure and optical trapping properties of a variety of complex particles of astrophysical interest. Abstract

Background & Aims: Recurrent primary biliary cholangitis (rPBC) develops in approximately 30% of patients and negatively impacts graft and overall patient survival after liver transplantation (LT). There is a lack of data regarding the response rate to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in rPBC. We evaluated a large, international, multi-center cohort to assess the performance of PBC scores in predicting the risk of graft and overall survival after LT in patients with rPBC. Methods: A total of 332 patients with rPBC after LT were evaluated from 28 centers across Europe, North and South America. The median age at the time of rPBC was 58.0 years [IQR 53.2–62.6], and 298 patients (90%) were female. The biochemical response was measured with serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin, and Paris-2, GLOBE and UK-PBC scores at 1 year after UDCA initiation. Results: During a median follow-up of 8.7 years [IQR 4.3–12.9] after rPBC diagnosis, 52 patients (16%) had graft loss and 103 (31%) died. After 1 year of UDCA initiation the histological stage at rPBC (hazard ratio [HR] 3.97, 95% CI 1.36-11.55, p = 0.01), use of prednisone (HR 3.18, 95% CI 1.04-9.73, p = 0.04), ALP xULN (HR 1.59, 95% CI 1.26-2.01, p <0.001), Paris-2 criteria (HR 4.14, 95% CI 1.57-10.92, p = 0.004), GLOBE score (HR 2.82, 95% CI 1.71-4.66, p <0.001), and the UK-PBC score (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03-1.09, p <0.001) were associated with graft survival in the multivariate analysis. Similar results were observed for overall survival. Conclusion: Patients with rPBC and disease activity, as indicated by standard PBC risk scores, have impaired outcomes, supporting efforts to treat recurrent disease in similar ways to pre-transplant PBC. Abstract

Pampacladius gaucho Donato, Zanotto, Arpellino et Siri gen. nov., sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on all life stages from the Pampean province in Central Argentina. This genus can be separated from all other male adult Orthocladiinae by absence of virga; anal point placed slightly forward on tergite IX with apical part short and reduced to a hump with posterior elongation; more than two scalpellate median acrostichals; bare wings; straight Cu1; presence of a squamal fringe; and well developed pulvilli. Molecular analyses support the status of Pampacladius as a new genus within Orthocladiinae. The analyses place the new form closely related to Echinocladius Cranston, Paulfreemania Cranston and Krosch, genus 'Australia' (called by Cranston after Brundin's notebook name for two very distinctive pupae), Tonnoirocladius Cranston, and Naonella Boothroyd. Event-based biogeographical analysis found this clade as part of a major clade whose ancestral distribution was on continents that were part of Gondwana. This 'late Gondwanan' clade was dated in 76.4 Mya (95% HPD: 90.4–61.5 Mya) and in such scenario several events took place linking Pampacladius gaucho with other species belonging to Austral areas, mainly Australia and New Zealand. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) and its common variants mycosis fungoides (MF) and leukemic Sézary syndrome (SS) are rare extranodal non-Hodgkins lymphomas. Patients who present with advanced disease and large-cell transformation (LCT) are incurable with standard treatments. In this article, we report the largest single-center experience with allogeneic stem-cell transplantation (SCT) for advanced CTCL. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective case series of 47 CTCL patients who underwent allogeneic SCT after failure of standard therapy between July 2001 and September 2013. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) curves. The method of Fine and Gray was used to fit regression models to the same covariates for these cumulative incidence data. RESULTS: The Kaplan-Meier estimates of OS and PFS at 4 years were 51% and 26%, respectively. There was no statistical difference in the OS in patients who had MF alone, SS, MF with LCT, or SS with LCT. PFS at 4 years was superior in patients who had SS versus those who did not (52.4% versus 9.9%; P = 0.02). The cumulative incidences of grade 2-4 acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and chronic GVHD were 40% and 28%, respectively. The cumulative nonrelapse mortality rate was 16.7% at 2 years. CONCLUSION: Allogeneic SCT may result in long-term remissions in a subset of patients with advanced CTCL. Although post-SCT relapse rates are high, many patients respond to immunomodulation and achieve durable remissions. CLINICALTRIALSGOV: NCT00506129.

Abstract

Introduction: The study of immune response to SARSCoV-2 infection in different solid organ transplant settings represents an opportunity for clarifying the interplay between SARS-CoV-2 and the immune system. In our nationwide registry study from Italy, we specifically evaluated, during the first wave pandemic, i.e., in non-vaccinated patients, COVID-19 prevalence of infection, mortality, and lethality in liver transplant recipients (LTRs), using non-liver solid transplant recipients (NL-SOTRs) and the Italian general population (GP) as comparators. Methods: Case collection started from February 21 to June 22, 2020, using the data from the National Institute of Health and National Transplant Center, whereas the data analysis was performed on September 30, 2020.To compare the sex- and age-adjusted distribution of infection, mortality, and lethality in LTRs, NL-SOTRs, and Italian GP we applied an indirect standardization method to determine the standardized rate. Results: Among the 43,983 Italian SOTRs with a functioning graft, LTRs accounted for 14,168 patients, of whom 89 were SARS-CoV-2 infected. In the 29,815 NL-SOTRs, 361 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were observed. The geographical distribution of the disease was highly variable across the different Italian regions. The standardized rate of infection, mortality, and lethality rates in LTRs resulted lower compared to NL-SOTRs [1.02 (95%CI 0.81-1.23) vs. 2.01 (95%CI 1.8-2.2); 1.0 (95%CI 0.5-1.5) vs. 4.5 (95%CI 3.6-5.3); 1.6 (95%CI 0.7-2.4) vs. 2.8 (95%CI 2.2-3.3), respectively] and comparable to the Italian GP. Discussion: According to the most recent studies on SOTRs and SARS-CoV-2 infection, our data strongly suggest that, in contrast to what was observed in NL-SOTRs receiving a similar immunosuppressive therapy, LTRs have the same risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, mortality, and lethality observed in the general population. Abstract

Recent applications of ANN, in geophysics include, e.g., the prediction of site amplification response (Boudghene Stambouli et al. 2017; Salameh et al. 2017; Bergamo et al. 2021) and seismic site classification (Zhao et al. 2006; Ghasemi et al. 2009; Ji et al. 2021; Díaz et al. 2022). The identification of significant peaks on microtremor H/V curves is traditionally assessed by means of the popular SESAME (2004) criteria, which, however, cannot discriminate between the stratigraphic and non-stratigraphic nature of them. Non-stratigraphic peaks are typically caused by machineries acting in the proximity of the recording station or result as an effect of vibrations induced from large nearby structures. Low frequency artefacts perturb the noise wavefield up to large distances from the source. The frequency of anthropogenic peak can also coincide or be very close to the frequency of a peak of stratigraphic origin. H/V curves are easily affected by artefacts that it is mandatory to discriminate them, before attempting any interpretation of the H/V curve itself.Given the worldwide extended use of H/V methods in seismic microzonation, being altered about the possible presence of non-stratigraphic peaks is important to avoid misclassifications of soil resonance frequencies or wrong stratigraphic interpretations when the H/V method is combined with, e.g., surface wave multichannel methods to achieve Vs profiles. Given the limited capability of standard techniques in this type of signal classification, we decided to explore the performance of different NNs in this sorting problem consisting in discriminating between stratigraphic and non-stratigraphic features in microtremor signals., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)
