This paper focuses on the investigation of the meaning of reduplication in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) analyzing the contribution of each of its forms: repetition (\rep) and alternation (\alt). In order to check their role, we proceeded a data collection with a native signer during elicitation sessions following the methodology for semantic elicitation (Matthewson, 2004). We also collected a spontaneous datum with another signer. We show that \rep is related to aspectual distribution, and \alt is associated to two pieces of information - participant-related distribution and aspectual distribution. We propose a formal analysis for each of the forms as well as of the way they interact compositionally. RESUMO Este artigo enfoca a investigação do significado da reduplicação na Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) analisando sua contribuição para cada uma das seguintes formas: repetição (\rep) e alternância (\alt). Para testar seu papel, procedemos a uma coleta de dados com um sinalizante nativo durante uma sessão de elicitação controlada segundo o protocolo para coleta em semântica (Matthewson, 2004). Nós coletamos, ainda, um dado espontâneo com outro sinalizante. Mostramos que \rep está relacionado a distribuição aspectual enquanto \alt está associado a uma dupla informação - distribuição de participante e aspectual. Propomos uma análise formal para cada uma das formas e para a forma como interagem composicionalmente.

O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a semântica dos numerais distributivos em três línguas: português brasileiro (românica), chinês mandarim (sino-tibetana), e karitiana (arikém, tupi). A despeito da diferença tipológica, propomos uma análise uniforme para esses operadores. Analisamos os numerais distributivos nas três línguas como advérbios que estão associados a uma semântica de pluracionalidade dos eventos. Consideramos que a distribuição é um subproduto da pluralização dos eventos (CABLE, 2014). Assim, torna-se possível fornecer uma entrada lexical única que abarca as diferentes interpretações das sentenças em que esses numerais ocorrem.&nbsp

The aim of this talk is to compare the semantics and distribution of the Mandarin adverb "zài" and the French adverb "encore". • We will characterize "encore" and "zài" as two repetitive adverbs, sharing the same presuppositional semantics ; • We will show that the interpretive and distributional differences between them can be described as terms of constraints on the temporal configuration and aspectual setting of their host sentences ; • In order to capture the differences and similarities in distribution between the two adverbs, we take advantage of a lattice organization of a Reichenbachian formal model description of tense, Le but de cet exposé est de comparer la sémantique et la distribution de l'adverbe mandarin "zài" et français "encore". • Nous les considérerons ici comme deux adverbes répétitifs présupposistionnels; • nous montrerons que les différences d'interprétation et de distribution peuvent se décrire en termes de contraintes aspectuo-temporelles de la proposition hôte ; • Nous nous appuierons sur une organisation en treillis de la représentation reichenbachienne des temps verbaux pour reprérer les différences et les similarités de l'emploi de ces deux marqueurs.

The paper presents a semantic analysis of Mandarin Chinese adverb zài, which is analysed as a repetitive adverb restricted to the repetition of prospective events and compared to the French repetitive adverb encore. The present study follows in this sense the direction indicated by Renaud & Luo (1987) and develops an analysis of the interaction of the two adverbs with the temporal information conveyed by the sentence and of the constraints imposed by the aspectual system in the two languages. The formal description relies on the definition of event repetition given by Donazzan (2008) ; Tovena et Donazzan (2008), and on the formal representation of Reichenbach's temporal system by means of Delannoy generalized lattices first applied to the temporal domain by Schwer (2007)., Ce travail étudie les propriétés sémantiques de l'adverbe zài du chinois mandarin, que nous analysons comme un adverbe de répétition restreint aux événements prospectifs par rapport au temps d'évaluation, et comparons avec l'adverbe encore du français, en reprenant l'analyse de Renaud et Luo (1987). Un examen détaillé des contraintes imposées par le système aspectuel des deux langues nous permet d'analyser les interactions de ces deux adverbes avec l'information temporelle véhiculée par la phrase. International audience; This paper is concerned with the semantics of the Romanian adverb mai in its occurrence as a VP-modifier. We propose that mai has the core meaning of an additive particle whose argument is a predicate of events. Following this monosemic analysis, we are able to explain the different interpretations of mai (its continuative, iterative and 'experiential' readings) by considering the aspectual information of the sentence and the structural properties of the predicate. Our claim is also supported by a comparison with additive and aspectual adverbs in Italian.

This dissertation develops the analysis of a collection of additive adverbs in the theoretical framework set by the semantic notion of event repetition. Among the manifestations of verbal plurality, event repetition can be defined by the presence of an order between the elements of the plural set and by the presuppositional status of the antecedent(s). Through the descriptive analysis of repetitive adverbs in three Romance languages (Italian, French, Romanian) and in Mandarin Chinese, we distinguish three main types of event repetition, which surface as iterative reading (Fr. Jean mange de nouveau chez nous), continuative reading (Fr. Jean mange encore son sandwich) and incremental reading (Fr. Jean mange encore un sandwich). It is shown that these distinctions depend mainly on the aspectual properties of the predicate and of the sentence, and can be paired with distinct structural positions of the adverbs at the syntactic interface.The notion of repetition is then applied to the analysis of specific cases. Through the analysis of Mandarin adverb hái, we suggest a repetitive account of aspectual\ continuative adverbs in comparative sentences (Jean est encore plus grand que Paul\ \ Zhāngsān bĭ Lĭsì hái gāo), basing our assumptions on the strong structural analogies between the two ordered domains of Time and Degree. We also give a semantic account of the incremental adverb zài in mandarin, showing that the distributional restrictions of the adverb and the interpretative differences in its presuppositional content can be explained by considering the aspectual properties of the predicate and the temporal reference of the sentence.; Dans ce travail, nous nous proposons d’analyser un certain nombre d’adverbes additifs dans le cadre de la notion sémantique de répétition d’événements. Du point de vue théorique, la répétition est définie, à l’intérieur des phénomènes de pluralité verbale, par l’existence d’une structure d’ordre entre les éléments et le statut de présupposition des antécédents de l’événement asserté. A travers l’étude descriptive de différents adverbes additifs dans trois langues romanes (italien, français, roumain) et en chinois mandarin, nous arrivons à distinguer trois types pertinents de répétition d’événements, qui se manifestent, au niveau empirique, à travers les trois lectures itérative (Jean mange de nouveau chez nous), continuative (Jean mange encore son sandwich) et incrémentale (Jean mange encore un sandwich). Nous montrons que la distinction entre ces trois lectures dépend principalement de l’aspect phrastique et verbal, et correspond à une distinction structurale entre les adverbes à l’interface syntaxique.La notion de répétition, ainsi définie, est ensuite étendue à l’étude de cas spécifiques. A travers l’étude de l’adverbe chinois hái nous proposons une analyse répétitive des adverbes aspectuels dans les constructions comparatives (Jean est encore plus grand que Paul\ Zhāngsān bĭ Lĭsì hái gāo), qui se fonde sur les analogies structurales entre le domaine du Temps et des Degrés. Finalement, nous proposons une analyse de l’adverbe incrémental zài du chinois mandarin, selon laquelle les restrictions distributionnelles subies par l’adverbe et les différences dans son contenu présuppositionnel dépendent des caractéristiques aspectuelles du prédicat et de la référence temporelle de la phrase.

The Mandarin Chinese adverb ZAI, in its adverbial use, displays a number of peculiarities--concerning the temporal orientation of the predicate, its aspectual properties and the syntactic/logical role of the sentence where it occurs--which, as a whole, have been subsumed under the feature 'irrealis'. In this paper, we consider ZAI as an additive particle in the domain of events and we propose to derive its 'irrealis' flavour from constraints on the structure and temporal location of the asserted event. As an additive particle, ZAI conveys a presupposition which cannot be recovered indipendently from the context of occurrence.
