2. GPSMirror: Expanding Accurate GPS Positioning to Shadowed and Indoor Regions with Backscatter

Abstract

Despite the prevalence of GPS services, they still suffer from intermittent positioning with poor accuracy in partially shadowed regions like urban canyons, flyover shadows, and factories' indoor areas. Existing wisdom relies on hardware modifications of GPS receivers or power-hungry infrastructures requiring continuous plug-in power supply which is hard to provide in outdoor regions and some factories. This paper fills the gap with GPSMirror, the first GPS-strengthening system that works for unmodified smartphones with the assistance of newly-designed GPS backscatter tags. The key enabling techniques in GPSMirror include: (i) a careful hardware design with microwatt-level power consumption that pushes the limit of backscatter sensitivity to re-radiate extremely weak GPS signals with enough coverage approaching the regulation limit; and (ii) a novel GPS positioning algorithm achieving meter-level accuracy in shadowed regions as well as expanding locatable regions under inadequate satellites where conventional algorithms fail. We build a prototype of the GPSMirror tags and conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate them. Our results show that a GPSMirror tag can provide coverage up to 27.7 m. 14. WiSion: Bolstering MAV 3D Indoor State Estimation by Embracing Multipath of WiFi

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a remarkable growth of micro aerial vehicle (MAV) technologies, which are desirable for many applications, ., warehouse inventory management and home entertainment. These indoor needs significantly improve work efficiency while posing fundamental challenges in the design of MAV state estimation. The state includes a vehicle's position, orientation, and velocity, which are fundamental to guide the motor control and adjust that vehicle's actions in autonomous flight. Existing vision-based solutions only work in well-lit texture-rich environments, while laser-based solutions are limited to MAVs' payload and budget. This paper presents WiSion, a robust and low-cost state estimator that leverages ubiquitous WiFi to estimate six-degree-of-freedom states for MAVs. Our observation is that the multipath of WiFi conceals a wealth of information about a vehicle's state, which helps combat the temporal drift of inertial sensors for smooth state estimation. We realize WiSion by an absolute-relative WiFi sensing module and a WiFi-inertial state estimation module. It works without knowing access points' (APs') positions. We implement the prototype with off-the-shelf products and conduct experiments in indoor venues. Our results show that WiSion achieves the position error of 35.25 cm and the attitude error of with a maximum linear velocity of 1.74 m/s. Moreover, WiSion can recover APs' positions and is robust to indoor hindrances such as obstacles and multipath.

Abstract

Two kinds of polyaniline coupled graphitized carbon nitride nanosheets doped with different organic phosphoric acids (CP@PA, with phytic acid; CP@NP, with amino trimethyl phosphonic acid) are developed by in‐situ polymerization. According to the analysis of the section morphology and element distribution of epoxy resin (EP) composites, although CP@PA and CP@NP show completely different morphology, they can significantly enhance the dispersion of graphitized carbon nitride nanosheets in EP. Moreover, the different oxidation states of phosphorus contained in the CP@PA and CP@NP lead to varying effects on the fire safety of EP. The flame retardancy Index (FRI) is a dimensionless index to evaluate the performance of flame retardants. When used as a flame retardant, CP@NP (FRI = 3.22) is better than CP@PA (FRI = 1.29) in flame retardant, especially in suppressing thermal hazards. As a synergist of intumescent flame retardants (IFR), CP@PA (FRI = 26.12) is most effective in improving the comprehensive fire safety property of EP and achieves an "Excellent" rating. Therefore, two different flame‐retardant mechanisms of CP@PA and CP@NP are summarized by analyzing the combustion behavior and changes of condensed phase. 25. Breeding of Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensiswith excellent ethanol tolerance based on adaptive evolution technology

Abstract

Fructilactobacillus (F.) sanfranciscensisLS1is one of the dominant strains in sourdough. Ethanol produced during fermentation is an inevitable stress factor for this stain. At present, the research on the mechanism of ethanol stress in lactic acid bacteria is limited compared to yeast species (particularly Saccharomyces (S.) cerevisiae). In this study microbial physiology and protein expression analysis technology was used. F. sanfranciscensisLS1served as the original bacteria, and evolutionary bacteria LS1‐1were obtained by adaptive evolution. The comparison of the two strains' growth, survival rate, morphology, hydrophobicity, cohesive force and protein expression revealed that the evolved bacteria had a significantly higher ethanol tolerance than the original bacteria. Similarly, the hydrophobicity of evolved bacteria was increased about 6.6 times than that of the original bacteria. With an increase in ethanol concentration, the level of damage on evolved bacteria was less, and the total proportion of damaged cells decreased. After 8 h of culturing, the self‐cohesion of the evolved strain was 1.29 times more than the original strain. Sodium dodecyl‐sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis has shown that the number of protein bands of the evolved bacteria LS1‐1increased significantly, indicating that the associated proteins were expressed more and the strain's ability to resist environmental pressure was improved. Abstract

This article mainly studied novel hollow carbon microspheres modified with molybdenum compounds for flame retardancy and toxicity reduction in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer. The structure of hollow carbon spheres (HCS) was investigated by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy‐energy‐dispersive spectrometer, respectively. The specific molybdenum compounds on the surface of HCS were further investigated by X‐ray diffraction. The flame retardancy and toxicity reduction of hollow carbon microsphere in TPU composites were studied by cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and so forth. The result shows that HCS modified by molybdenum compounds (MOH) can reduce fire hazards and toxic release of TPU during combustion. For example, under the same load, the peak heat release rate of TPU/MOH composite decreased by 63.39%, that of TPU composite prepared by modified HCS with ammonium molybdate (TPU/AMH) decreased by 52.89%, and that of TPU composite prepared by introducing acidulated carbonized HCS (TPU/CAH) decreased by 40.73%, compared with that of pure TPU. The peak smoke production rate (pSPR), peak carbon monoxide production (pCOP), and peak carbon dioxide production (pCO2P) of TPU/MOH composite decreased by 52.34%, 72.4%, and 68.3%, respectively.
