Research on two-dimensional van der Waals materials has demonstrated that the layer degree of freedom can significantly alter the physical properties of materials due to the substantial modification of bulk bands. Inspired by this concept, layered photonic systems have been proposed and realized, revealing novel phenomena absent in their monolayer counterparts. In this work, we experimentally investigate the band structures of bilayer valley photonic crystals. Two typical structures with different stacking configurations are experimentally imaged via the near-field scanning technology, exhibiting distinct bulk band structures. Furthermore, different topological edge modes induced by distinct topology are observed, revealing that the layer degree of freedom can be regarded as a pseudospin and offer further capabilities for controlling the flow of light. Our work not only elucidates the evolution of band structures from monolayer to bilayer topological systems but also provides an experimental platform for the further exploration of bilayer topological insulators., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Disorder, which is ubiquitous in nature, has been extensively explored in photonics for understanding the fundamental principles of light diffusion and localization, as well as for applications in functional resonators and random lasers. Recently, the investigation of disorder in topological photonics has led to the realization of topological Anderson insulators characterized by an unexpected disorder-induced phase transition. However, the observed photonic topological Anderson insulators so far are limited to the time-reversal symmetry breaking systems. Here, we propose and realize a photonic quantum spin Hall topological Anderson insulator without breaking time-reversal symmetry. The disorder-induced topological phase transition is comprehensively confirmed through the theoretical effective Dirac Hamiltonian, numerical analysis of bulk transmission, and experimental examination of bulk and edge transmissions. We present the convincing evidence for the unidirectional propagation and robust transport of helical edge modes, which are the key features of nontrivial time-reversal invariant topological Anderson insulators. Furthermore, we demonstrate disorder-induced beam steering, highlighting the potential of disorder as a new degree of freedom to manipulate light propagation in magnetic-free systems. Our work not only paves the way for observing unique topological photonic phases but also suggests potential device applications through the utilization of disorder.

3-dB couplers, which are commonly used in photonic integrated circuits for on-chip information processing, precision measurement, and quantum computing, face challenges in achieving robust performance due to their limited 3-dB bandwidths and sensitivity to fabrication errors. To address this, we introduce topological physics to nanophotonics, developing a framework for topological 3-dB couplers. These couplers exhibit broad working wavelength range and robustness against fabrication dimensional errors. By leveraging valley-Hall topology and mirror symmetry, the photonic-crystal-slab couplers achieve ideal 3-dB splitting characterized by a wavelength-insensitive scattering matrix. Tolerance analysis confirms the superiority on broad bandwidth of 48 nm and robust splitting against dimensional errors of 20 nm. We further propose a topological interferometer for on-chip distance measurement, which also exhibits robustness against dimensional errors. This extension of topological principles to the fields of interferometers, may open up new possibilities for constructing robust wavelength division multiplexing, temperature-drift-insensitive sensing, and optical coherence tomography applications., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Manipulating radiation asymmetry of photonic structures is of particular interest in many photonic applications such as directional optical antenna, high efficiency on-chip lasers, and coherent light control. Here, we proposed a term of pseudo-polarization to reveal topological nature of radiation asymmetry in bilayer metagratings. Robust pseudo-polarization vortex with an integer topological charge exists in P-symmetry metagrating, allowing for tunable directionality ranging from -1 to 1 in synthetic parameter space. When P-symmetry-breaking, such vortex becomes pairs of C points due to the conservation law of charge, leading to the phase difference of radiation asymmetry from {\pi}/2 to 3{\pi}/2. Furthermore, topologically enabled coherent perfect absorption is robust with customized phase difference at will between two counter-propagating external light sources. This work can not only enrich the understanding of two particular topological photonic behavriors, i.e., bound state in the continuum and unidirectional guided resonance, but also provide a topological view on radiation asymmetry, opening an unexplored avenue for asymmetric light manipulation in on-chip laser, light-light switch and quantum emitters.

The introduction of synthetic dimensions in topological photonic systems enriches the exploration of topological phase of light in higher-dimensional space beyond three-dimensional real-space. Recently, the gapless corner modes of topological photonic crystals under translational deformation have been proposed, but their experimental observation is still absent. Here, we observe the gapless corner modes in a photonic crystal slab under translational deformation. The corner mode exhibits a frequency dependence that can be tuned through the translation of the slab. Importantly, we find that the existence of gapless corner modes is independent of the specific corner configuration. The gapless corner modes are experimentally imaged via the near-field scanning measurement, and validated numerically by full-wave simulations. Our work contributes to the advancement of topological photonics and provides valuable insights into the exploration of gapless corner modes in synthetic dimensions.

Refractive index is a fundamental electromagnetic (EM) parameter that can describe photonic continuous media (PCM) traditionally as either transparency or opacity. Recently, topological theory offers a new set of phases to characterize PCM as either trivial or nontrivial, by using topological invariant which are not direct to EM parameters. As all of optical properties in PCM should be related to EM parameters, we formulate a topological index based on EM parameters and establish its phase map in this work. The map can analytically describe the deterministic condition for a topologically nontrivial phase. Our findings indicate that the topology of 2D bi-anisotropic PCM is determined by the sign of the topological index. Another EM parameter of pseudo surface impedance is also introduced for the opaque regions of PCM, showing that the topological opacity has a full range of impedance values ranging from negative to positive, while the trivial case only has either negative or positive impedance. The simulation results show that an interface between two opacities with differing index signs can support robustly optical propagation of topological edge states. As the index only depends on EM parameters, it will pave an insightful way to further understand the intrinsic properties of photonic topology.

We demonstrate a kind of grating coupler that generates high quality flat-top beam with a small beamwidth from photonic integrated circuits into free-space. The grating coupler is designed on a silicon-on-insulator wafer with a 220 nm-thick silicon layer and consists of a dual-etch grating (DG) and a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). By adjusting the structural parameters of DG and DBR, a pixel-level (6.6 um) flat-top beam with the vertical radiation of -0.5 dB and the mode match of 97% at 1550 nm is realized. Furthermore, a series of high-efficiency grating couplers are designed to create flat-top beam with different scales.

The recent research of topological photonics has not only proposed and realized novel topological phenomena such as one-way broadband propagation and robust transport of light, but also designed and fabricated photonic devices with high-performance indexes which are immune to fabrication errors such as defects or disorders. Photonic crystals, which are periodic optical structures with the advantages of good light field confinement and multiple adjusting degrees of freedom, provide a powerful platform to control the flow of light. With the topology defined in the reciprocal space, photonic crystals have been widely used to reveal different topological phases of light and demonstrate topological photonic functionalities. In this review, we present the physics of topological photonic crystals with different dimensions, models and topological phases. The design methods of topological photonic crystals are introduced. Furthermore, we review the applications of topological photonic crystals in passive and active photonics. These researches pave the way of applying topological photonic crystals in practical photonic devices.

Topological states, first known as quantum Hall effect or Chern insulating crystal, have been generalized to many classical wave systems where potential applications such as robust waveguiding, quantum computing and high-performance lasers are expected. However, a crystal can be either topologically trivial or nontrivial, depending on its detailed configuration, and one needs to carefully design the structure and calculate its topological invariant before the actual applications. Here, we theoretically study and experimentally demonstrate the second Chern crystal in a four-dimensional space by introducing two extra synthetic translation dimensions. Due to the inherently nontrivial topology of the synthetic translation space, this abstract four-dimensional crystal is guaranteed to be topologically nontrivial regardless of the detailed configuration. The dimensional hierarchy of gapless boundary modes can be deduced by dimension reduction. Remarkably, one-dimensional gapless dislocation modes are observed and their robustness is confirmed in our experiments. Three-dimensional (3D) artificial metacrystals host rich topological phases, such as Weyl points, nodal rings and 3D photonic topological insulators. These topological states enable a wide range of applications, including 3D robust waveguide, one-way fiber and negative refraction of surface wave. However, these carefully designed metacrystals are usually very complex, hindering their extension to nanoscale photonic systems. Here, we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized an ideal nodal ring in visible region using a simple 1D photonic crystal. The pi Berry phase around the ring is manifested by a 2pi reflection phase's winding and the resultant drumhead surface states. By breaking the inversion symmetry, the nodal ring can be gapped and the pi-Berry phase would diffuse into a toroidal shaped Berry flux, resulting in photonic ridge states (the 3D extension of quantum valley Hall states). Topological photonics has been introduced as a powerful platform for integrated optics, since it can deal with robust light transport, and be further extended to the quantum world. Strikingly, valley-contrasting physics in topological photonic structures contributes to valley-related edge states, their unidirectional coupling, and even valley-dependent wave-division in topological junctions. Here, we design and fabricate nanophotonic topological harpoon-shaped beam splitters (HSBSs) based on $120$-deg-bending interfaces and demonstrate the first on-chip valley-dependent quantum information process. Two-photon quantum interference, namely, HongOu-Mandel (HOM) interference with a high visibility of $0.956 \pm 0.006$, is realized with our 50/50 HSBS, which is constructed by two topologically distinct domain walls. Cascading this kind of HSBS together, we also demonstrate a simple quantum photonic circuit and generation of a path-entangled state. Our work shows that the photonic valley state can be used in quantum information processing, and it is possible to realize more complex quantum circuits with valley-dependent photonic topological insulators, which provides a novel method for on-chip quantum information processing., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Valley photonic crystal is one type of photonic topological insulator, whose realization only needs P-symmetry breaking. The domain wall between two valley-contrasting photonic crystals support robust edge states which can wrap around sharp corners without backscattering. Using the robust edge states, one can achieve the pulse transmission. Here, using time-domain measurement in the microwave regime, we show distortionless pulse transmission in a sharply bended waveguide. An Omega-shaped waveguide with four 120-degree bends is constructed with the domain wall between two valley photonic crystal slabs. Experimental results show the progress of Gaussian pulse transmission without distortion, and the full width at half maximum of the output signal was changed slightly in the Omega-shaped waveguide. By measuring steady state electric field distribution, we also confirmed the confined edge states without out-of-plane radiation which benefits from the dispersion below the light line. Our work provides a way for high-fidelity optical pulse signal transmission and develop high-performance optical elements such as photonic circuits or optical delay lines., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

Here, the frequency degree of freedom is introduced into valley photonic crystals with dual band gaps. Based on the high-order plane wave expansion model, we derive an effective Hamiltonian which characterizes dual band gaps. Metallic valley photonic crystals are demonstrated as examples in which all four topological phases are found. At the domain walls between topologically distinct valley photonic crystals, frequency-dependent edge states are demonstrated and a broadband photonic detouring is proposed. Our findings provide the guidance for designing the frequency-dependent property of topological structures and show its potential applications in wavelength division multiplexers., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Metagratings have been shown to form an agile and efficient platform for extreme wavefront manipulation, going beyond the limitations of gradient metasurfaces. Previous approaches for transmissive metagratings have resorted on compound asymmetric inclusions to achieve single-channel near-perfect diffraction. However, such complex inclusions are sensitive to geometric parameters and lack the flexibility for arbitrary phase modulation, restricting applications to beam deflection. Here, we show perfect unitary diffraction in all-dielectric transmissive metagratings using rectangular inclusions by tailoring their multipole interferences. Using this principle, we experimentally demonstrate analog phase profile encoding of a hologram through displacement modulation of CMOS-compatible silicon nitride nanobars, manifesting broadband and wide-angle high diffraction efficiencies for both polarizations and across the entire visible range. Featured with extreme angle/wavelength/polarization tolerance and alleviated structural complexity for both design and fabrication, our demonstration unlocks the full potential of metagrating-based wavefront manipulation for a variety of practical applications.

The existence of surface electromagnetic waves in the dielectric-metal interface is due to the sign change of real parts of permittivity across the interface. In this work, we demonstrate that the interface constructed by two semi-infinite photonic crystals with different signs of the imaginary parts of permittivity also supports surface electromagnetic eigenmodes with real eigenfrequencies, protected by $ PT $ symmetry of such loss-gain interface. Using a multiple scattering method and full wave numerical methods, we show that the dispersion of such interface states exhibit unusual features such as zig-zag trajectories or closed-loops. To quantify the dispersion, we establish a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model that can account for the zig-zag and closed-loop behaviour for arbitrary Bloch momentums. The properties of the interface states near the Brillouin zone center can also be explained within the framework of effective medium theory. It is shown that turning points of the dispersion are exceptional points (EPs), which are characteristic features of non-Hermitian systems. When the permittivity of photonic crystal changes, these EPs can coalesce into higher order EPs or anisotropic EPs. These interface modes hence exhibit and exemplify many complex phenomena related to exceptional point physics., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

The recent realization of photonic topological insulators has brought the discovery of fundamentally new states of light and revolutionary applications such as non-reciprocal devices for photonic diodes and robust waveguides for light routing. The spatially distinguished layer pseudospin has attracted attention in two-dimensional electronic materials. Here we report layered photonic topological insulators based on all-dielectric bilayer photonic crystal slabs. The introduction of layer pseudospin offers more dispersion engineering capability, leading to the layer-polarized and layer-mixed photonic topological insulators. Their phase transition is demonstrated with a model Hamiltonian by considering the nonzero interlayer coupling. Layer-direction locking behavior is found in layer-polarized photonic topological insulators. High transmission is preserved in the bilayer domain wall between two layer-mixed photonic topological insulators, even when a large defect is introduced. Layered photonic topological insulators not only offer a route towards the observation of richer nontrivial phases, but also open a way for device applications in integrated photonics and information processing by using the additional layer pseudospin., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Recently, higher-order topological phases that do not obey the usual bulk-edge correspondence principle have been introduced in electronic insulators and brought into classical systems, featuring with in-gap corner/hinge states. So far, second-order topological insulators have been realized in mechanical metamaterials, microwave circuit, topolectrical circuit and acoustic metamaterials. Here, using near-field scanning measurements, we show the direct observation of corner states in second-order topological photonic crystal (PC) slabs consisting of periodic dielectric rods on a perfect electric conductor (PEC). Based on the generalized two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, we show that the emergence of corner states roots in the nonzero edge dipolar polarization instead of the nonzero bulk quadrupole polarization. We demonstrate the topological transition of 2D Zak phases of PC slabs by tuning intra-cell distances between two neighboring rods. We also directly observe in-gap 1D edge states and 0D corner states in the microwave regime. Our work presents that the PC slab is a powerful platform to directly observe topological states, and paves the way to study higher-order photonic topological insulators.

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) enables for capability improvement of modern information processing systems by replacing some of their electrical counterparts. With the miniaturization of SOI platform, backscattering suppression is one of the central issues to avoid energy loss and signal distortion in telecommunications. Valley, a new degree of freedom, provides an intriguing way for topologically robust information transfer and unidirectional flow of light, in particular for subwavelength strategy that still remains challenge in topological nanophotonics. Here, we realize topological transport in a SOI valley photonic crystal (VPC) slab. In such inversion asymmetry slab, singular Berry curvature near Brillouin zone corners guarantees valley-dependent topological edge states below light cone, maintaining a balance between in-plane robustness and out-of-plane radiation. Topologically robust transport at telecommunication wavelength is observed along two sharp-bend VPC interfaces with a compact size (< 10 um), showing flat-top high transmission of around 10% bandwidth. Furthermore, topological photonic routing is achieved in a bearded-stack VPC interface, originating from broadband unidirectional excitation of the valley-chirality-locked edge state by using a microdisk as a phase vortex generator. Control of valley in SOI platform not only shows a prototype of integrated photonic devices with promising applications for delay line, routing, optical isolation and dense wavelength division multiplexing for information processing based on topological nanophotonics, but also opens a new door towards the observation of non-trivial states even in non-Hermitain systems., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

The exploration of binary valley degree of freedom in topological photonic systems has inspired many intriguing optical phenomena such as photonic Hall effect, robust delay lines, and perfect out-coupling refraction. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the tunability of light flow in a valley photonic crystal waveguide. By continuously controlling the phase difference of microwave monopolar antenna array, the flow of light can split into different directions according to the charily of phase vortex, and the splitting ratio varies smoothly from 0.9 to 0.1. Topological valley transport of edge states is also observed at photonic domain wall. Tunable edge state dispersion, i.e., from gapless valley dependent modes to gapped flat bands, is found at the photonic boundary between a valley photonic crystal waveguide and a perfect electric conductor, leading to the tunable frequency bandwidth of high transmission. Light manipulations such as spin-direction locking propagation, robust transport, quantum teleportation and reconfigurable electromagnetic pathways have been investigated at the boundaries of photonic systems. Recently by breaking Dirac cones in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals, valley-pseudospin coupled edge states have been employed to realize selective propagation of light. Here, without photonic boundaries, we realize the propagation of pseudospin states in three-dimensional bulk metacrystal waveguides by employing the ubiquitous valley degree of freedom. Valley-dependent pseudospin bands are achieved in three-dimensional metacrystal waveguides without Dirac cones. Reconfigurable photonic valley Hall effect is proposed after studying the variation of pseudospin states near K' and K valleys. Moreover, a prototype of photonic blocker is realized by cascading two inversion asymmetric metacrystal waveguides in which the pseudospin direction locking propagation exists. In addition, valley-dependent pseudospin bands are also discussed in a realistic metamaterials sample. Edge states of photonic crystals have attracted much attention for the potential applications such as high transmission waveguide bends, spin dependent splitters and one-way photonic circuits. Here, we theoretically discuss and experimentally observe the deterministic edge states in checkerboard photonic crystals. Due to the self-complementarity of checkerboard photonic crystals, a common band gap is structurally protected between two photonic crystals with different unit cells. Deterministic edge states are found inside the common band gap by exploiting the Zak phase analysis and surface impedance calculation. Engineering local angular momentum of structured light fields in real space enables unprecedented applications in many fields, in particular for the realization of unidirectional robust transport in topological photonic crystals with non-trivial Berry vortex in momentum space. Here, we show transverse angular momentum modes in silicon topological photonic crystals when considering transverse electric polarization. Excited by a chiral external source with either transverse spin or orbital angular momentum, robust light flow propagating along opposite directions was observed in several kinds of sharp-turn interfaces between two topologically-distinct silicon photonic crystals. A transverse orbital angular momentum mode with alternating-sign topological charge was found at the boundary of such two photonic crystals. In addition, we also found that unidirectional transport is robust to the working frequency even when the ring-size or location of pseudo-spin source varies in a certain range, leading to the superiority of broadband photonic device. These findings enable for making use of transverse angular momentum, a kind of degree of freedom, to achieve unidirectional robust transport in telecom region and other potential applications in integrated photonic circuits such as on-chip robust delay line., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

As one of nanoscale planar structures, metasurface has shown excellent superiorities on manipulating light intensity, phase and/or polarization with specially designed nanoposts pattern. It allows to miniature a bulky optical lens into the chip-size metalens with wavelength-order thickness, playing an unprecedented role in visible imaging systems (e.g. ultrawide-angle lens and telephoto). However, a CMOS-compatible metalens has yet to be achieved in the visible region due to the limitation on material properties such as transmission and compatibility. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a divergent metalens based on silicon nitride platform with large numerical aperture (NA~0.98) and high transmission (~0.8) for unpolarized visible light, fabricated by a 695-nm-thick hexagonal silicon nitride array with a minimum space of 42 nm between adjacent nanoposts. Nearly diffraction-limit virtual focus spots are achieved within the visible region. Such metalens enables to shrink objects into a micro-scale size field of view as small as a single-mode fiber core. Furthermore, a macroscopic metalens with 1-cm-diameter is also realized including over half billion nanoposts, showing a potential application of wide viewing-angle functionality. Thanks to the high-transmission and CMOS-compatibility of silicon nitride, our findings may open a new door for the miniaturization of optical lenses in the fields of optical fibers, microendoscopes, smart phones, aerial cameras, beam shaping, and other integrated on-chip devices., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Optical complex materials offer unprecedented opportunity to engineer fundamental band dispersion which enables novel optoelectronic functionality and devices. Exploration of photonic Dirac cone at the center of momentum space has inspired an exceptional characteristic of zero-index, which is similar to zero effective mass in fermionic Dirac systems. Such all-dielectric zero-index photonic crystals provide an in-plane mechanism such that the energy of the propagating waves can be well confined along the chip direction. A straightforward example is to achieve the anomalous focusing effect without longitudinal spherical aberration, when the size of zero-index lens is large enough. Here, we designed and fabricated a prototype of zero-refractive-index lens by comprising large-area silicon nanopillar array with plane-concave profile. Near-zero refractive index was quantitatively measured near 1.55 um through anomalous focusing effect, predictable by effective medium theory. The zero-index lens was also demonstrated to perform ultralow longitudinal spherical aberration. Such IC compatible device provides a new route to integrate all-silicon zero-index materials into optical communication, sensing, and modulation, and to study fundamental physics on the emergent fields of topological photonics and valley photonics., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we study valley degree of freedom in all dielectric silicon photonic graphene. Photonic band gap opening physics under inversion symmetry breaking is revisited by the viewpoint of nonzero valley Chern number. Bulk valley modes with opposite orbital angular momentum are unveiled by inspecting time-varying electric fields. Topological transition is well illustrated through photonic Dirac Hamiltonian. We proposed a group-theory method to calculate topological invariant in bi-isotropic photonic crystals invariant under crystallographic point group symmetries. Spin Chern number has been evaluated by the eigenvalues of rotation operators at high symmetry k-points after the pseudo-spin polarized fields are retrieved. Topological characters of photonic edge states and photonic band gaps can be well predicted by total spin Chern number. Nontrivial phase transition is found in large magnetoelectric coupling due to the jump of total spin Chern number. Light transport is also issued at the {\epsilon}/{\mu} mismatching boundary between air and the bi-isotropic photonic crystal. Achieving robust transport has attracted much attention in both electronic and photonic systems. Time-reversal invariant photonic crystal can be employed to realize backscattering-immune chiral state, but the chiral bandgap is topologically trivial. Here, we designed and fabricated a metacrystal comprising non-resonant meta-atoms sandwiched between two metallic plates and the system exhibits topological phase transition as established by group classification. The nontrivial bandgap was confirmed by experimentally measured transmission spectra, calculated nonzero spin Chern number and Z2 index. Gapless spin-filtered edge states were demonstrated experimentally by measuring the magnitude and phase of the fields. A gain-assisted plasmonic waveguide with two detuned resonators is investigated in the plasmon-induced transparency window. Phase map is employed to study power transmittance and group delay for varying gain coefficients and frequency detunings of the two resonators. The gain coefficient for lasing oscillation condition is analytically shown to vary quadratically with the frequency detuning. In the amplification regime below the lasing threshold, the spectrum implies not only large group delay, but also high transmittance and narrow linewidth. This is in contrast to those in the loss-compensation regime and the passive case in which there always exists a trade-off between the linewidth and the peak transmittance., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

An optical Fano resonance, which is caused by birefringence control rather than frequency selection, is discovered. Such birefringence-induced Fano resonance comes with fast-switching radiation. The resonance condition $\varepsilon_t< 1/\varepsilon_r$ is revealed and a tiny perturbation in birefringence is found to result in a giant switch in the principal light pole induced near surface plasmon resonance. The loss and size effects upon the Fano resonance have been studied Fano resonance is still pronounced, even if the loss and size of the object increase. A strategy is proposed to realize robust transport in time reversal invariant photonic system. Using numerical simulation and microwave experiment, we demonstrate that a chiral guided mode in the channel of a three-dimensional dielectric woodpile photonic crystal is immune to the scattering of a square patch of metal or dielectric inserted to block the channel. We investigated the plasmonic modes in a two-dimensional quasicrystalline array of metal nanoparticles. The polarization of the modes is in the array plane. A simplified eigen-decomposition method is presented with the help of rotational symmetry. Two kinds of anti-phase ring modes with radial and tangential polarizations are of highest spatial localizations among all of plasmonic modes. For the leaky characteristic of the anti-phase ring modes, the highest fidelity mode is found to be tangential polarized mode in the quasicrystal array, whereas normal-to-plane polarized mode in the solo ring. The leaky characteristics and spatial localizations of other plasmonic modes are also studied, for example, collective vortex mode that may be potentially useful to form negative responses in plasmonic device, and collective radial mode that may be used to generate light sources with radial polarizations., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

We show that a metamaterial slab with arbitrary values of epsilon and mu behaves as a cloak at a finite frequency for a small object located sufficiently close to it due to the suppression of the object's optical excitations by enhanced reflections. Reflections due to propagating components can partially suppress the excitation while evanescent components can cloak the object completely. In this paper, we use the parameter retrieval method together with an analytical effective medium approach to design a well-performed invisible cloak, which is based on an empirical revised version of the reduced cloak. The designed cloak can be implemented by silver nanowires with elliptical cross-sections embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate host. This cloak is numerically proved to be robust for both the inner hidden object as well as incoming detecting waves, and is much simpler thus easier to manufacture when compared with the earlier proposed one [Nat. We investigated on the interface modes in a heterostructure consisting of a semi-infinite metallic layer and a semi-infinite Fibonacci quasi-periodic structure. Various properties of the interface modes, such as their spatial localizations, self-similarities, and multifractal properties are studied. The interface modes decay exponentially in different ways and the modes in the lower stable gap possess highest spatial localization. A localization index is introduced to understand the localization properties of the interface modes. We found that the localization index of the interface modes in the upper stable gap will converge to two slightly different constants according to the parity of the Fibonacci generation. A quantitative condition is derived to evaluate the monocular accommodation in holographic stereograms. We find that the reconstruction can be viewed as true-3D image when the whole scene is located in the monocular cues area, with compatible monocular cues and binocular cues. In contrast, it reveals incorrect monocular cues in the visible multi-imaging area and the lacking information area. To demonstrate our theoretical predictions, a pupil-function integral imaging algorithm is developed to simulate the mono-eye observation, and a holographic printing system is set up to fabricate the full-parallax holographic stereogram.
