Search

The non-Markovianity is a prominent concept of the dynamics of the open quantum systems, which is of fundamental importance in quantum mechanics and quantum information. Despite of lots of efforts, the experimentally measuring of non-Markovianity of an open system is still limited to very small systems. Presently, it is still impossible to experimentally quantify the non-Markovianity of high dimension systems with the widely used Breuer-Laine-Piilo (BLP) trace distance measure. In this paper, we propose a method, combining experimental measurements and numerical calculations, that allow quantifying the non-Markovianity of a $N$ dimension system only scaled as $N^2$, successfully avoid the exponential scaling with the dimension of the open system in the current method. After the benchmark with a two-dimension open system, we demonstrate the method in quantifying the non-Markovanity of a high dimension open quantum random walk system.

We take a new approach to determine the scale parameter $r_0$, the physical masses of strange and charm quarks through a global fit which incorporates continuum extrapolation, chiral extrapolation and quark mass interpolation to the lattice data. The charmonium and charm-strange meson spectrum are calculated with overlap valence quarks on $2+1$-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaboration. We use the masses of $D_s$, $D_s^*$ and $J/\psi$ as inputs and obtain $m_c^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=1.110(24)\,{\rm GeV}$, $m_s^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\,{\rm GeV})=0.104(9)\,{\rm GeV}$ and $r_0=0.458(11)\,{\rm fm}$. Subsequently, the hyperfine-splitting of charmonium and $f_{D_s}$ are predicted to be $112(5)\,{\rm MeV}$ and $254(5)\,{\rm MeV}$, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, POS for lattice 2013

We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. The quark disconnected insertion loops are computed with $Z_4$ noise, and the signal-to-noise is improved with unbiased subtractions. The glue operator is comprised of gauge-field tensors constructed from the overlap operator. The calculation is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice at $\beta = 6.0$ for Wilson fermions with $\kappa=0.154, 0.155$, and $0.1555$ which correspond to pion masses at $650, 538$, and $478$~MeV, respectively. The chirally extrapolated $u$ and $d$ quark momentum/angular momentum fraction is found to be $0.64(5)/0.70(5)$, the strange momentum/angular momentum fraction is $0.024(6)/0.023(7)$, and that of the glue is $0.33(6)/0.28(8)$. The previous study of quark spin on the same lattice revealed that it carries a fraction of $0.25(12)$ of proton spin. The orbital angular momenta of the quarks are then obtained from subtracting the spin from their corresponding angular momentum components. We find that the quark orbital angular momentum constitutes $0.47(13)$ of the proton spin with almost all of it coming from the disconnected insertions., Comment: Renormalization section is expanded to include more details. We present a calculation of the strangeness and charmness contents and of the nucleon from dynamical lattice QCD with 2+1 flavors. The calculation is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations. The configurations are generated by the RBC collaboration on a 24^3*64 lattice with sea quark mass am_l=0.005, am_s=0.04, and inverse lattice spacing a^{-1}=1.73GeV. Both actions have chiral symmetry which is essential in avoiding contamination due to the operator mixing with other flavors. Nucleon propagator and the quark loops are both computed with stochastic grid sources, while low-mode substitution and low-mode averaging methods are used respectively which substantially improve the signal to noise ratio. We obtain the strangeness matrix element f_{T_{s}} = m_s / M_N = 0.0334(62), and the charmness content f_{T_{c}} = m_c / M_N = 0.094(31) which is resolved from zero by 3\sigma precision for the first time., Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures; correct typos and minor updates; Figures updated, final version published in Phys. We report a complete calculation of the quark and glue momenta and angular momenta in the proton. These include the quark contributions from both the connected and disconnected insertions. We report meson spectra obtained by using valence overlap fermion propagators generated on a background of 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 X 32, 24^3 X 64 and 32^3 X 64 lattices. We use many-to-all correlators with Z3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution which is efficient in reducing errors for the hadron correlators. The overlap fermion propagator is calculated on 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion gauge configurations on 16^3 x 32, 24^3 x 64 and 32^3 x 64 lattices. With HYP smearing and low eigenmode deflation, it is shown that the inversion of the overlap operator can be expedited by ~ 20 times for the 16^3 x 32 lattice and ~ 80 times for the 32^3 x 64 lattice. Through the study of hyperfine splitting, we found that the O(m^2a^2) error is small and these dynamical fermion lattices can adequately accommodate quark mass up to the charm quark. The low energy constant \Delta_{mix} which characterizes the discretization error of the pion made up of a pair of sea and valence quarks in this mixed action approach is calculated via the scalar correlator with periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. It is found to be small which shifts a 300 MeV pion mass by ~ 10 to 19 MeV on these sets of lattices. We have studied the signal-to-noise issue of the noise source for the meson and baryon. It is found that the many-to-all meson and baryon correlators with Z_3 grid source and low eigenmode substitution is efficient in reducing errors for the correlators of both mesons and baryons. With 64-point Z_3 grid source and low-mode substitution, it can reduce the statistical errors of the light quark (m_{\pi} ~ 200 - 300 MeV) meson and nucleon correlators by a factor of ~ 3-4 as compared to the point source. The charmed-strange meson spectrum is calculated with the overlap valence fermions on 2+1 flavor domain wall dynamical configurations for $32^3\times 64$ lattices with a spatial size of 2.7 fm. Both charm and strange quark propagators are calculated with the overlap fermion action. The calculated scalar meson at 2304(22) MeV and axial-vector meson at 2546(27) MeV are in good agreement with the experimental masses of $D{s0}^*$(2317) and $D_{s1}$(2536)., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. We extend the study of lowest moments, $$ and $$, of the parton distribution function of the nucleon to include those of the sea quarks; this entails a disconnected insertion calculation in lattice QCD. This is carried out on a $16^3 \times 24$ quenched lattice with Wilson fermion. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_2$ noise vectors and unbiased subtractions, and multiple nucleon sources are employed to reduce the statistical errors. We obtain 5$\sigma$ signals for $$ for the $u,d,$ and $s$ quarks, but $$ is consistent with zero within errors. We provide results for both the connected and disconnected insertions. The perturbatively renormalized $$ for the strange quark at $\mu = 2$ GeV is $_{s+\bar{s}} = 0.027 \pm 0.006$ which is consistent with the experimental result. The ratio of $$ for $s$ vs. $u/d$ in the disconnected insertion with quark loops is calculated to be $0.88 \pm 0.07$. This is about twice as large as the phenomenologically fitted $\displaystyle\frac{< x>_{s+\bar{s}}}{< x>_{\bar{u}}+< x>_{\bar{d}}}$ from experiments where $\bar{u}$ and $\bar{d}$ include both the connected and disconnected insertion parts. The charmed-strange meson masses are calculated on a quenched lattice QCD. The charm and strange quark propagators are calculated on the same lattice with the overlap fermion. $16^3\times 72$ lattice with Wilson gauge action at $\beta=0.6345$ are used. The charm and strange quark masses are determined by fitting the $J/\psi$ and $\phi$ masses respectively. The charmed strange meson spectrum for the scalar, axial, pseudoscalar and vector channels are calculated. They agree with experiments. In this talk, we shall assess the finite ma errors from the overlap fermion. We shall present results on the speed of light from the dispersion relation and hyperfine splitting between the vector and pseudoscalar mesons as a function to ma to reveal the m\Lambda_{QCD}a^2 and m^2a^2 errors. We conclude from this study that one should be limited to using ma less than 0.5 in order to keep the systematic ma errors below a few percent level., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures Lattice 2007 Conference

We study the a0 and sigma mesons with the overlap fermion in the chiral regime with the pion mass as low as 182 MeV in the quenched approximation. After the eta'pi ghost states are separated, we find that the a0 mass with q\bar{q} interpolation field to be almost independent of the quark mass in the region below the strange quark mass. The chirally extrapolated results are consistent with a0(1450) being the u\bar{d} meson and K0*(1430) being the u\bar{s} meson with calculated masses at 1.42+_0.13 GeV and 1.41+_ 0.12 GeV respectively. We also calculate the scalar mesonium with a tetraquark interpolation field. In addition to the two pion scattering states, we find a state at around 550 MeV. Through the study of volume dependence, we confirm that this state is a one-particle state, in contrast to the two-pion scattering states. This suggests that the observed state is a tetraquark mesonium which is quite possibly the sigma(600) meson., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. D

The glueball-to-vacuum matrix elements of local gluonic operators in scalar, tensor, and pseudoscalar channels are investigated numerically on several anisotropic lattices with the spatial lattice spacing ranging from 0.1fm - 0.2fm. These matrix elements are needed to predict the glueball branching ratios in $J/\psi$ radiative decays which will help identify the glueball states in experiments. Two types of improved local gluonic operators are constructed for a self-consistent check and the finite volume effects are studied. We find that lattice spacing dependence of our results is very weak and the continuum limits are reliably extrapolated, as a result of improvement of the lattice gauge action and local operators. We present the first study of the charmonium spectrum using overlap fermions, on quenched configurations. Simulations are performed on $16^3 \times 72$ lattices, with Wilson gauge action at $\beta$ = 6.3345. We demonstrate that we have discretization errors under control at about 5%. We obtain 88(4) MeV for hyperfine splitting using the $r_0$ scale, and 121(6) MeV using the ($1\bar{P}-1\bar{S}$) scale. This paper raises the possibility that the discrepancy between the lattice results and the experimental value for charmonium hyperfine splitting can be resolved using overlap fermions to simulate the charm quark on lattice., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We compute non-perturbatively the renormalization constants of composite operators on a quenched $16^3 \times 28 $ lattice with lattice spacing $a$ = 0.20 fm for the overlap fermion by using the regularization independent (RI) scheme. The quenched gauge configurations were generated with the Iwasaki action. We test the relations $Z_A = Z_V$ and $ Z_S=Z_P$ and find that they agree well {(less than 1%)} above $\mu$ = 1.6 GeV. %even for our lattice with a coarse lattice spacing. We also perform a Renormalization Group (RG) analysis at the next-to-next-to-leading order and match the renormalization constants to the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme. The wave-function renormalization $Z_{\psi}$ is determined from the vertex function of the axial current and $Z_A$ from the chiral Ward identity. Finally, we examine the finite quark mass behavior for the renormalization factors of the quark bilinear operators. We find that the $(pa)^2$ errors of the vertex functions are small and the quark mass dependence of the renormalization factors to be quite weak., Comment: 40 pages, 20 figures

We calculate the lattice two-point function of topological charge density in pure-glue QCD using the discretization of the operator based on the overlap Dirac matrix. Utilizing data at three lattice spacings it is shown that the continuum limit of the correlator complies with the requirement of non-positivity at non-zero distances. For our choice of the overlap operator and the Iwasaki gauge action we find that the size of the positive core is ~2a (with a being the lattice spacing) sufficiently close to the continuum limit. This result confirms that the overlap-based topological charge density is a valid local operator over realistic backgrounds contributing to the QCD path integral, and is important for the consistency of recent results indicating the existence of a low-dimensional global brane-like topological structure in the QCD vacuum. We also confirm the divergent short-distance behavior of the correlator, and the non-integrable nature of the associated contact part., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We have recently presented evidence that in configurations dominating the regularized pure-glue QCD path integral, the topological charge density constructed from overlap Dirac operator organizes into an ordered space-time structure. It was pointed out that, among other properties, this structure exhibits two important features: it is low-dimensional and geometrically global, i.e. consisting of connected sign-coherent regions with local dimensions 1<= d < 4, and spreading over arbitrarily large space--time distances. Here we show that the space-time structure that is responsible for the origin of topological susceptibility indeed exhibits global behavior. In particular, we show numerically that topological fluctuations are not saturated by localized concentrations of most intense topological charge density. To the contrary, the susceptibility saturates only after the space-time regions with most intense fields are included, such that geometrically global structure is already formed. We demonstrate this result both at the fundamental level (full topological density) and at low energy (effective density). The drastic mismatch between the point of fluctuation saturation (~ 50% of space-time at low energy) and that of global structure formation (<4% of space-time at low energy) indicates that the ordered space-time structure in topological charge is inherently global and that topological charge fluctuations in QCD cannot be understood in terms of individual localized pieces. We present preliminary results using overlap fermions for the charmonium spectrum, in particular for hyperfine splitting. Simulations are performed on $16^3 \times 72$ lattices, with Wilson gauge action at $\beta=6.3345$. Depending on how the scale is set, we obtain 104(5) MeV (using $1\bar{P}-1\bar{S}$) or 88(4) MeV (using $r_0$=0.5 fm) for the hyperfine splitting., Comment: 3 pages, 5 fiugres. We present a quenched lattice QCD calculation of spin-1/2 five-quark states with $uudd\bar{s}$ quark content for both positive and negative parities. We do not observe any bound pentaquark state in these channels for either I = 0 or I =1. The states we found are consistent with KN scattering states which are checked to exhibit the expected volume dependence of the spectral weight. The results are based on overlap-fermion propagators on two lattices, 12^3 x 28 and 16^3 x 28, with the same lattice spacing of 0.2 fm, and pion mass as low as ~ 180 MeV., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Lattice topological charge associated with Ginsparg-Wilson fermions exhibits generic topological stability over quantum ensemble of configurations contributing to the QCD path integral. Moreover, the underlying chiral symmetry leads to the suppression of ultraviolet noise in the associated topological charge densities ("chiral smoothing"). This provides a solid foundation for the direct study of the role of topological charge fluctuations in the physics of QCD vacuum. Using these tools it was recently demonstrated that: (a) there is a well-defined space-time structure (order) in topological charge density (defined through overlap fermions) for typical configurations contributing to QCD path integral; (b) this fundamental structure is low-dimensional, exhibiting sign-coherent behavior on subsets of dimension less than four and not less than one; (c) the structure has a long-range global character (spreading over maximal space-time distances) and is built around the locally one-dimensional network of strong fields (skeleton). Using the constrained curve fitting method and overlap fermions with the lowest pion mass at $180 {\rm MeV}$, we observe that the masses of the first positive and negative parity excited states of the nucleon tend to cross over as the quark masses are taken to the chiral limit. Both results at the physical pion mass agree with the experimental values of the Roper resonance ($N^{1/2+}(1440)$) and $S_{11}$ ($N^{1/2-}(1535)$). This is seen for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation. These results are obtained on a quenched Iwasaki $16^3 \times 28$ lattice with $a = 0.2 {\rm fm}$. We also extract the ghost $\eta' N$ states (a quenched artifact) which are shown to decouple from the nucleon interpolation field above $m_{\pi} \sim 300 {\rm MeV}$. From the quark mass dependence of these states in the chiral region, we conclude that spontaneously broken chiral symmetry dictates the dynamics of light quarks in the nucleon., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, revised version to appear in PLB

The quenched chiral logs are examined on a $16^3 \times 28$ lattice with Iwasaki gauge action and overlap fermions. The pion decay constant $f_{\pi}$ is used to set the lattice spacing, $a = 0.200(3) {\rm fm}$. With pion mass as low as $\sim 180 {\rm MeV}$, we see the quenched chiral logs clearly in $m_{\pi}^2/m$ and $f_P$, the pseudoscalar decay constant. We analyze the data to determine how low the pion mass needs to be in order for the quenched one-loop chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT) to apply. With the constrained curve-fitting method, we are able to extract the quenched chiral log parameter $\delta$ together with other low-energy parameters. Only for $m_{\pi} \leq 300 {\rm MeV}$ do we obtain a consistent and stable fit with a constant $\delta$ which we determine to be 0.24(3)(4) (at the chiral scale $\Lambda_{\chi}=0.8 {\rm GeV}$). By comparing to the $12^3 \times 28$ lattice, we estimate the finite volume effect to be about 2.7% for the smallest pion mass. We also fitted the pion mass to the form for the re-summed cactus diagrams and found that its applicable region is extended farther than the range for the one-loop formula, perhaps up to $m_{\pi} \sim 500-600$ MeV. The scale independent $\delta$ is determined to be 0.20(3) in this case. We study the quenched non-analytic terms in the nucleon mass and find that the coefficient $C_{1/2}$ in the nucleon mass is consistent with the prediction of one-loop $\chi$PT\@. We also obtain the low energy constant $L_5$ from $f_{\pi}$. We conclude from this study that it is imperative to cover only the range of data with the pion mass less than $\sim 300 {\rm MeV}$ in order to examine the chiral behavior of the hadron masses and decay constants in quenched QCD and match them with quenched one-loop $\chi$PT\@., Comment: 37 pages and 24 figures, pion masses are fitted to the form for the re-summed cactus diagrams, figures added, to appear in PRD

While sign-coherent 4-dimensional structures cannot dominate topological charge fluctuations in the QCD vacuum at all scales due to reflection positivity, it is possible that enhanced coherence exists over extended space-time regions of lower dimension. Using the overlap Dirac operator to calculate topological charge density, we present evidence for such structure in pure-glue SU(3) lattice gauge theory. It is found that a typical equilibrium configuration is dominated by two oppositely-charged sign-coherent connected structures (``sheets'') covering about 80% of space-time. Each sheet is built from elementary 3-d cubes connected through 2-d faces, and approximates a low-dimensional curved manifold (or possibly a fractal structure) embedded in the 4-d space. At the heart of the sheet is a ``skeleton'' formed by about 18% of the most intense space-time points organized into a global long-range structure, involving connected parts spreading over maximal possible distances. We find that the skeleton is locally 1-dimensional and propose that its geometrical properties might be relevant for understanding the possible role of topological charge fluctuations in the physics of chiral symmetry breaking., Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 4 figures; v2: 6 pages, 5 figures, more explanations provided, figure and references added, published version

Recently, we have pointed out that sign-coherent 4-dimensional structures can not dominate topological charge fluctuations in QCD vacuum at all scales. Here we show that an enhanced lower-dimensional coherence is possible. In pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory we find that in a typical equilibrium configuration about 80% of space-time points are covered by two oppositely-charged connected structures built of elementary 3-dimensional coherent hypercubes. The hypercubes within the structure are connected through 2-dimensional common faces. We suggest that this coherence is a manifestation of a low-dimensional order present in the QCD vacuum. The structure of topological charge fluctuations in the QCD vacuum is strongly restricted by the spectral negativity of the Euclidean 2-point correlator for $x\neq 0$ and the presence of a positive contact term. Using the constrained-fitting method based on Bayesian priors, we extract the masses of the two lowest states of octet and decuplet baryons with both parities. The calculation is done on quenched 16^3x28 lattices of a=0.2 fm using an improved gauge action and overlap fermions, with the pion mass as low as 180 MeV. The Roper state N(1440)1/2+ is clearly observed for the first time as the 1st-excited state of the nucleon from the standard interpolating field. Together with other baryons, our preliminary results indicate that the level-ordering of the low-lying baryon states on the lattice is largely consistent with experiment. We introduce the Dirac eigenmode filtering of topological charge density associated with Ginsparg-Wilson fermions as a tool to investigate the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The resulting framework is used to demonstrate that the bulk of topological charge in QCD does not appear in the form of unit quantized lumps. This means that the mixing of "would-be" zeromodes associated with such lumps is probably not the prevalent microscopic mechanism for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. To characterize the coherent local behavior in topological charge density at low energy, we compute the charges contained in maximal coherent spheres enclosing non-overlapping peaks. We find a continuous distribution essentially ending at ~0.5. Finally, we study, for the first time, the overlap-operator topological-charge-density correlators and find consistency with non-positivity at nonzero physical distance. This represents a non-trivial check on the locality (in gauge paths) of the overlap Dirac operator for realistic gauge backgrounds., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, talk, Lattice2002(topology)

The feasibility of using lattice chiral fermions which are free of $O(a)$ errors for both the heavy and light quarks is examined. The fact that the effective quark propagators in these fermions have the same form as that in the continuum with the quark mass being only an additive parameter to a chirally symmetric antihermitian Dirac operator is highlighted. This implies that there is no distinction between the heavy and light quarks and no mass dependent tuning of the action or operators as long as the discretization error $O(m^2 a^2)$ is negligible. Using the overlap fermion, we find that the $O(m^2a^2)$ (and $O(ma^2)$) errors in the dispersion relations of the pseudoscalar and vector mesons and the renormalization of the axial-vector current and scalar density are small. This suggests that the applicable range of $ma$ may be extended to $\sim 0.56$ with only 5% error, which is a factor of $\sim 2.4$ larger than that of the improved Wilson action. We show that the generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation with unequal masses can be utilized to determine the finite $ma$ errors in the renormalization of the matrix elements for the heavy-light decay constants and semileptonic decay constants of the B/D meson., Comment: final version to appear in Int. The local structure of low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator is studied. It is found that these modes cannot be described as linear combinations of 't Hooft "would-be" zeromodes associated with instanton excitations that underly the Instanton Liquid Model. This implies that the instanton liquid scenario for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is not accurate. We consider the lattice topological charge density introduced by Hasenfratz, Laliena and Niedermayer and propose its eigenmode expansion as a tool to investigate the structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The resulting effective density is built from local chiralities studied previously. At every order of the expansion the density exactly sums up to the global topological charge, and the leading term describes the maximally smooth space-time distribution of charge relevant for propagating light fermions. We use this framework to demonstrate our previous suggestion that the bulk of topological charge in QCD does not effectively appear in the form of quantized unit lumps. Our conclusion implies that it is unlikely that the mixing of "would-be" zeromodes associated with such lumps is the prevalent microscopic mechanism for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. We also present first results quantitatively characterizing the space-time behavior of effective densities. The reasons for using low-lying Dirac eigenmodes to probe the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD are discussed, and it is pointed out that the qualitative double-peaked behavior of the local chiral orientation probability distribution in these modes is necessary, but not sufficient for dominance of instanton-like fluctuations. The results with overlap Dirac operator in Wilson gauge backgrounds at lattice spacings ranging from a~0.04 fm to a~0.12 fm are reported, and it is found that the size and density of local structures responsible for double-peaking of the distribution are in disagreement with the assumptions of the Instanton Liquid Model. We report our calculation of the pion decay constant $f_\pi$, the axial renormalization constant $Z_A$, and the quenched chiral logarithms from the overlap fermions. The calculation is done on a quenched $20^4$ lattice at $a=0.148$ fm using tree level tadpole improved gauge action. The smallest pion mass we reach is about 280 MeV. We discuss the utility of low-lying Dirac eigenmodes for studying the nature of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The implications of previous results using the local chirality histogram method are discussed, and the new results using the overlap Dirac operator in Wilson gauge backgrounds at lattice spacings ranging from a~0.04 fm to a~0.12 fm are reported. While the degree of local chirality does not change appreciably closer to the continuum limit, we find that the size and density of local structures responsible for chiral peaking do change significantly. The resulting values are in disagreement with the assumptions of the Instanton Liquid Model. The chiral properties of the pseudoscalar mesons are studied numerically on a quenched $20^4$ lattice with the overlap fermion. We elucidate the role of the zero modes in the meson propagators, particularly that of the pseudoscalar meson. The non-perturbative renormalization constant $Z_A$ is determined from the axial Ward identity and is found to be almost independent of the quark mass for the range of quark masses we study; this implies that the $O(a^2)$ error is small. The pion decay constant, $f_{\pi}$, is calculated from which we determine the lattice spacing to be 0.148 fm. We look for quenched chiral log in the pseudoscalar decay constants and the pseudoscalar masses and we find clear evidence for its presence. The chiral log parameter $\delta$ is determined to be in the range 0.15 -- 0.4 which is consistent with that predicted from quenched chiral perturbation theory., Comment: Version accepted for publication by PRD. We report results on hadron masses, fitting of the quenched chiral log, and quark masses from Neuberger's overlap fermion on a quenched $20^4$ lattice with lattice spacing $a = 0.15$ fm. We used the improved gauge action which is shown to lower the density of small eigenvalues for $H^2$ as compared to the Wilson gauge action. This makes the calculation feasible on 64 nodes of CRAY-T3E. Also presented is the pion mass on a small volume ($6^3 \times 12$ with a Wilson gauge action at $\beta = 5.7$). We find that for configurations that the topological charge $Q \ne 0$, the pion mass tends to a constant and for configurations with trivial topology, it approaches zero possibly linearly with the quark mass., Comment: Lattice 2000 (Chiral Fermion), 4 pages, 4 figures

The chiral symmetry relation and scaling of the overlap fermions are studied numerically on the quenched lattices at 3 couplings with about the same physical volume. We find that the generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation is satisfied to better than 1% down to the smallest quark mass at $m_0a = 0.006$. We also obtain the quark mass from the PCAC relation and the pseudoscalar masses. The renormalization group invariant quark mass is shown to be fairly independent of scale. The $\pi$ and $\rho$ masses at a fixed $m_{\pi}/m_{\rho}$ ratio indicate small $O(a^2)$ corrections. We calculate the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon from the quark energy-momentum tensor form factors on the lattice. The disconnected insertion is estimated stochastically which employs the $Z_2$ noise with an unbiased subtraction. This reduced the error by a factor of 4 with negligible overhead. The total quark contribution to the proton spin is found to be $0.30 \pm 0.07$. From this and the quark spin content we deduce the quark orbital angular momentum to be $0.17 \pm 0.06$ which is $\sim 34$% of the proton spin. We further predict that the gluon angular momentum to be $0.20 \pm 0.07$, i. e. $\sim$ 40% of the proton spin is due to the glue., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

We present results on hadron masses and quark condensate from Neuberger's overlap fermion. The scaling and chiral properties and finite volume effects from this new Dirac operator are studied. We find that the generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation is well satisfied down to the physical u and d quark mass range. We calculate the form factor of the quark energy momentum tensor and thereby extract the quark orbital angular momentum of the nucleon. The calculation is done on a quenched $16^3 \times 24$ lattice at $\beta = 6.0$ and with Wilson fermions at $\kappa$ = 0.148, 0.152, 0.154 and 0.155. We calculate the disconnected insertion stochastically which employs the $Z_2$ noise with an unbiased subtraction. This proves to be an efficient method of reduce the error from the noise. We find that the total quark contribution to the proton spin is $0.29 \pm 0.07$. From this we deduce that the quark orbital angular momentum is $0.17 \pm 0.08$ and predict the gluon spin to be $0.21 \pm 0.07$, i.e. about 40% of the proton spin is due to the glue., Comment: LATTICE99(Matrix Elements), 3 pages, 3 figures

A valence QCD theory is developed to study the valence quark properties of hadrons. To keep only the valence degrees of freedom, the pair creation through the Z graphs is deleted in the connected insertions; whereas, the sea quarks are eliminated in the disconnected insertions. This is achieved with a new ``valence QCD'' lagrangian where the action in the time direction is modified so that the particle and antiparticle decouple. The theory has the vector and axial $U(2N_F)$ symmetry in the particle-antiparticle space. Through lattice simulation, it appears that this is dynamically broken down to $U_q(N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(N_F)$. Furthermore, the lattice simulation reveals spin degeneracy in the hadron masses and SU(6) relations in the ratios of $F_A/D_A, F_S/D_S$, and $\mu^n/\mu^p$. This leads to an approximate $U_q(2N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(2N_F)$ symmetry which is the basis for the valence quark model. We find that the masses of N, $\Delta, \rho, \pi, a_1$, and $a_0$ all drop precipitously compared to their counterparts in the quenched QCD calculation. This is interpreted as due to the disapperance of the `constituent' quark mass which is dynamically generated through tadpole diagrams. Form the near degeneracy between N and $\Delta$ for the quark masses we have studied (ranging from one to four times the strange mass), we conclude that the origin of the hyper-fine splitting in the baryon is largely attibuted to the Goldstone boson exchanges between the quarks. We report on a lattice QCD calculation of the strangeness magnetic moment of the nucleon. Our result is $G_M^s(0) = - 0.36 \pm 0.20 $. The sea contributions from the u and d quarks are about 80% larger. However, they cancel to a large extent due to their electric charges, resulting in a smaller net sea contribution of $ - 0.097 \pm 0.037 \mu_N$ to the nucleon magnetic moment. As far as the neutron to proton magnetic moment ratio is concerned, this sea contribution tends to cancel out the cloud-quark effect from the Z-graphs and result in a ratio of $ -0.68 \pm 0.04$ which is close to the SU(6) relation and the experiment. The strangeness Sachs electric mean-square radius $< r_s^2>_E$ is found to be small and negative and the total sea contributes substantially to the neutron electric form factor., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, LaTex, UK/97-23, ADP-97-55/T281

We describe a lattice calculation of the matrix elements relevant for glueball production in $J / \psi$ radiative decays. The techniques for such a calculation on anisotropic lattices with an improved action are outlined. We introduce the Pad\'e--Z$_2$ (PZ) stochastic estimator for calculating determinants and determinant ratios. The estimator is applied to the calculation of fermion determinants from the two ends of the Hybrid Monte Carlo trajectories with pseudofermions. Our results on the $8^3 \times 12$ lattice with Wilson action show that the statistical errors from the stochastic estimator can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude by employing an unbiased variational subtraction scheme which utilizes the off-diagonal matrices from the hopping expansion. Having been able to reduce the error of the determinant ratios to about 20 % with a relatively small number of noise vectors, this may become a feasible algorithm for simulating dynamical fermions in full QCD. We introduce a new method for estimating determinants or determinant ratios of large matrices, which combines the techniques of Pad\`{e} approximation with rational functions and $Z_{2}$ noise estimation of traces of large matrices. The method requires simultaneously solving several matrix equations, which can be conveniently accomplished using the MR method. We introduce a dynamical fermion algorithm which is based on the hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm, but without pseudofermions. The molecular dynamics steps in HMC are retained except the derivatives with respect to the gauge fields are calculated with the $Z_2$ noise. The determinant ratios are estimated with the Pa\`{d}e - $Z_2$ method. Finally, we use the Kennedy-Kuti linear accept/reject method for the Monte Carlo step which is shown to respect detailed balance. We report on a lattice QCD calculation of the $\pi N \sigma$ term, the scalar form factor, and $\langle N|\bar{s}s|N\rangle$. The disconnected insertion part of $\sg$ is found to be $1.8 \pm 0.1$ times larger than the connected insertion contribution. The $q^2$ dependence of $\sg(q^2)$ is about the same as $G_E(q^2)$ of the proton so that $\sg(2m_{\pi}^2) - \sg(0) = 6.6 \pm 0.6$ MeV. The ratio $y= \ss/\ud = 0.36 \pm 0.03$. Both results favor a $\sg \sim 53$ MeV, slightly larger than our direct calculation of $\sg = 49.7 \pm 2.6$ MeV. We also compute $F_s$ and $D_s$ and find that the agreement with those from the octect baryon mass splittings crucially depends on the inclusion of the large disconnected insertion. We report on a lattice QCD calculation of the flavor-singlet axial coupling constant $g_A$ of the proton from the axial-vector current. The simulation is carried out at $\beta = 6$ on a quenched $16^3 \times 24$ lattice. An extrapolation to the chiral limit shows that the connected insertion (valence and cloud parts) is $0.62 \pm 0.09$, which is close to $g_A^8$. The disconnected insertion (vacuum polarization from the sea quark) for the $u$ or $d$ quark is $- 0.12\pm 0.01 $ and the $s$ quark also contributes $-0.12\pm 0.01$. The total $g_A^1$ is thus $0.25 \pm 0.12$ which is in agreement with experiments. In addition, we find $g_A^3 = 1.20 \pm 0.11$, $g_A^8 = 0.61 \pm 0.13$ and $F_A/D_A = 0.60 \pm 0.02$, also in agreement with experiments., Comment: 8 pages, latex, 7 figures in uuencoded postscript file, minor typo changes.
