Abstract

Dynamic responses and vibration characteristics of a rotating functionally graded material (FGM) beam with a hollow circular cross-section in the temperature field are investigated in this paper. The material properties of the FGM beam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary along the thickness direction of the beam. By considering the rigid-flexible coupling effect, the geometrically nonlinear dynamic equations of a hub–FGM beam system are derived by employing the assumed modes method and Lagrange’s equations. With the high-order coupling dynamic model, the effect of temperature variations under two different laws of motion is discussed, and the free vibration of the system is studied based on the first-order approximate coupling model. This research can provide ideas for the design of space thermal protection mechanisms.

23. Assessing comparable bioconcentration potentials for nanoparticles in aquatic organisms via combined utilization of machine learning and toxicokinetic models.

Abstract

The toxicokinetic (TK) model‐derived kinetic bioconcentration factor (BCFk) provides a quantitatively comparable index to estimate the bioaccumulation potential of nanoparticles (NPs) that barely reach thermodynamic equilibrium in aquatic organisms, but experimental data are limited for various NPs. In the present study, a machine learning model was applied to offer reliable in silico predictions for the dynamic body burden of diverse NPs to derive corresponding parameters for the TK model. The developed eXtreme Gradient Boosting‐derived TK (XGB‐TK) model was applied to predict BCFk results for a broad range of metallic or carbonaceous NPs, with an appreciable prediction R2 of 0.96. The BCFk values were predicted based on a random combination of selected variable features, revealing that their bioaccumulation potential showed an overall negative correlation with NP density or organism size. By applying importance analysis and partial dependence plots, NP density and organism size were revealed to be the top essential features that impact the bioaccumulation potential. The conjunctively used XGB‐TK model enabled a prior comparison for diverse NPs and straightforward derivation on the dependency of features, which could also guide the bioaccumulation mechanism exploration and experimental condition formulation. 24. A Discontinuous Individual Growth Model of Swimming Crab Portunus trituberculatus and Its Application in the Nutrient Dynamic Simulation in an Intensive Mariculture Pond

Abstract

Environmental problems such as organic pollution and eutrophication caused by highly intensive mariculture activities constrain the sustainable and healthy development of industry. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify the nutrient dynamics of aquaculture animals in order to reduce the risk of environmental pollution. In this study, a discontinuous individual growth model of Portunus trituberculatus in an intensive mariculture pond of P. trituberculatus–Penaeus japonicus–Sinonovacula constricta was constructed based on a dynamic energy budget theory combined with the index of condition factor. This model better predicted the growth and molting behavior of P. trituberculatus, and an acceptable fit was obtained through model parameterization using the Add-my-Pet (AmP) method (mean relative error = 0.058, symmetric mean squared error = 0.007). Ten molts were simulated over 180 days and generally coincided with the recorded molt time points. Based on this model and P. trituberculatus populations, the dynamic processes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in ingestion, respiration, excretion, feces, residual feed, dead crabs, seeding, molt, and harvest were simulated. The carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus ingested during the 180-day culture period were 4,938.57 kg ha-1, 1,255.88 kg ha-1, and 244.16 kg ha-1, respectively. Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal by harvest accounted for 1.06%, 1.03% and 0.62% of the total ingestion, respectively, while carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal by dead crabs accounted for 6.84%, 6.63%, and 4.04%, respectively, and carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus released from residual feed into the water accounted for 41.43% of the total feed. The accurate simulation of molting behavior and nutrient dynamics in this study provides a theoretical basis for molting risk prevention and environmental stress assessment of P. trituberculatus and provides basic modules and data support for the construction of the integrated mariculture ecosystem model.

Abstract

Scallop farming is the main economic activity in the northern parts of China, with a production that has increased quickly since the 1980s. In the present study, a bioenergetics growth model to the Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, in the mariculture area of Zhangzidao Island was applied, based on dynamic energy budget (DEB) theory which describes energy flux variation through different compartments of the scallop body. Estimates of most DEB parameters were based on available physiological data or published information, and the two parameters, i.e., detritus contribution to food (αDet) and half-saturation constant for food (XK) were calibrated using datasets in this study. The model relied on two forcing variables: water temperature and food density expressed by different food quantifiers. The sets of data used to validate the model came from a growth experiment performed on P. yessoensis for bottom-sowing culture. The DEB model developed here for P. yessoensis was allowed to simulate growth and reproduction of the scallop in the growing area of the Zhangzidao Island.

33. Morphological and structural analysis of Penaeus vannameimandibles and an attempt at real-time cannibalism monitoring based on passive acoustics

Abstract

Cannibalism is a significant factor contributing to individual disability, mortality, and reduced shrimp production in commercial culture. The primary challenge of controlling cannibalism is the real-time and efficient monitoring of its occurrence. Here, we simultaneously captured high-speed video and feeding acoustics to match sound signals to feeding behaviors in Penaeus vannamei.Building upon a feeding acoustics signal acquisition system, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) was utilized to detect differences in the acoustic signals produced when shrimps fed on broken feed, pellet feed, and meat fragments of P. vannamei(cannibalism). The morphological and structural characteristics of P. vannameimandibles were analyzed using micro-CT, nano-indentation, and Raman testing. The main findings were: (1) Feeding on meat fragments resulted in a distinct high-frequency impulse train signal that may serve as an effective indicator for monitoring cannibalistic behavior during culture. (2) Shrimps produced similar and stable acoustic signals while consuming pellet feed, broken feed, or meat fragments; however, there were significant differences in the numbers of generated pulses (P< 0.05), with broken feed < pellet feed < meat fragments. (3) The mandibles consisted of thin anterior incisors and flat thick posterior molar processes, both with stratified structures; the mandibles exhibited greater elastic modulus and hardness values in their outer layers than inner layers, and calcium phosphate deposits were present in both incisors and molar processes. The collisions between incisors showed patterns that were highly synchronized with the acoustic feeding signals. This study has expanded research on passive acoustics monitoring in crustaceans and provided crucial data for the development of precious feeding technology in crustaceans.

Abstract

Currently, the state-of-the-art method about object detector in image mainly depends on deep backbones, such as ResNet-50, DarkNet-53, ResNet-101 and DenseNet-169, which benefits for their powerful capability of feature representations but suffers from high computational cost. On the basis of fast lightweight backbone network (i.e., VGG-16), this paper improves the capability of feature representations by combining features of different receptive fields and cross-fusing feature pyramids, and finally establishes a fast and accurate detector. The architecture of our model is designed to integrate FC-CF Net with two sub-modules: FC module and CF module. Inspired by the structure of receptive fields in visual systems of human, we propose a novel method about Feature Combination Based on Receptive Fields module (FC module), which takes the relationship between the size and eccentricity of receptive fields into account, and then combine them with original features for increasing the receptive field and information of the feature map. Furthermore, based on the structure of FPN (Feature Pyramid Network), we design a novel Cross-Fusion Feature Pyramid module (CF module), which combines top-down and bottom-up connections to fuse features across scales, and achieves high-level semantic feature map at all scales. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 demonstrate that FC-CF Net achieves state-of-the-art detection accuracy (i.e. 82.4% mAP, 80.5% mAP) with high efficiency (i.e. 69 FPS, 35 FPS).

47. Kupffer Cells Degrade 14C-Labeled Few-Layer Graphene to 14CO2in Liver through Erythrophagocytosis

Abstract

The distribution and clearance of graphene materials as drug delivery systems at organ and suborgan levels over the long term remain unclear. Here we compared the fate of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene with different lateral sizes in mice after one intravenous injection for up to 1 year and demonstrated that few-layer graphene mainly accumulated in the liver, and larger graphene can be degraded into 14CO2by Kupffer cells. The mechanism involves the uptake of graphene by liver cells, larger graphene-induced membrane perturbation of red blood cells, and enhanced erythrophagocytosis by the Kupffer cells, resulting in the degradation of hemoglobin into hemes and a rise in iron concentrations in cells. The increased iron triggered a Fenton reaction to generate the hydroxyl radical, facilitating the degradation of larger graphene into 14CO2. Our findings propose a mechanism for the transformation of graphene that significantly contributes to our understanding of the hepatic fate of graphene in vivo.

Abstract

The growing applications of graphene materials warrant a careful evaluation of their environmental fate in aquatic food webs. Escherichia cob (Bacteria), Te rahymena thermophita (protozoa), Daphnia magna (zooplankton), and Dania rerio (vertebrate) were used to build aquatic food chains to investigate the waterbome uptake and trophic transfer of [sup 14]C-labeled grapheme. Body burden factor (BEF) and trophic transfer factor (TTF) were analyzed for each organism and food chain to assess the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of graphene. The test organisms have high potential of accumulating graphene via direct uptake from culture medium with log-transformed BBF (log BBF) values of 3.66, 5.1, 3.9, and L62 for each organism, respectively. In the food chain from E. mli to T. thermophila, the calculated TiFs of 0.2 to 8.6 indicate the high trophic transfer potential in this aquatic food chain. However, the TTFs calculated for the food chain from T. thermophila to D. magna and from D. magna to D. rerio are much lower than 1, indicating that biomagnification was unlikely to occur in these food chains. Body burden measured for dietary uptake by T. thermophila, D. magna, and D. rerio are higher than that via waterborne exposure in a similar nominal concentration, respectively, indicating that trophic transfer is a nonnegligible route for the bioaccumulation of graphene in organisms.
