An air-sea interaction field campaign was conducted in September of 2017 within the warm and cold eddy region of the western Northwest Pacific (WNP) (17.5˚-20.5˚N, 127.5˚E-133.5˚E). Both near-surface oceanic and atmospheric conditions in addition to ocean heat content (OHC) were examined to better understand the mechanisms governing high heat flux magnitudes responsible for rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones. Observations from this experiment indicate that the latent heat flux (LHF) under modest wind conditions reached 400 W m-2 within the vicinity of a warm eddy, with OHC higher than 100 kJ cm-2 of warm eddy region being 2~3 times as large as that of cold eddy region. These high OHC and a resultant high LHF in the warm eddy, comparable to the magnitude of LHF in the North Equatorial Current, may explain the mechanism of why tropical cyclones over a warm eddy in eddy-rich zones often rapidly intensify in the WNP. A month later typhoon Lan rapidly intensified into a super typhoon, while passing over the boundary region of warm and cold eddies during the observation period. Results from this study illustrate that both the wind-normalized LHF and the difference (Qs-Qa) between the specific humidity at air (Qa) and at the sea surface (Qs), closely correlate with OHC patterns, which suggests that the ocean looks likely to control the spatial pattern of LHF. Overall, both the ocean and weather conditions govern the pattern of specific humidity difference between the air-sea interface, with large OHC over the warm eddy controlling higher Qs and the pattern of Qa depending on the pattern of wind direction. Qa as a factor impacting LHF magnitude is strongly linked to wind direction in the experimental area, that is, the drier northwesterly flow and southeasterly moist wind, resulting in the enhanced contrast of specific humidity at cold eddy region.

We investigated the export flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) using 234Th as a tracer in the western Indian Ocean along 60°E and 67°E transects in 2017 and 2018. The Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge (SCTR), where production is relatively high due to nutrient replenishment by upwelling of subsurface water, was observed at 3°S – 12°S in 2017 and 4°S – 13°S both 60°E and 67°E in 2018. POC fluxes in 2017 showed no differences between the SCTR and non-SCTR regions. However, in 2018, the POC fluxes in the SCTR regions (8.52 ± 7.89 mmol C m–2 d–1) were one order of magnitude higher than those observed in the non-SCTR regions (0.63 ± 0.07 mmol C m–2 d–1), which appeared to be related to the strong upwelling of subsurface water. These POC fluxes were comparable to those observed under bloom conditions, and thus, are important for estimating the efficiency of carbon sequestration in the ocean.

The interpretation of decline in dissolved oxygen (DO) in the oxygenated bottom water of the Ulleung Basin (UB), southwest of the East/Japan Sea has been challenging because of the integrated influence of various DO-consuming processes. Therefore, the stable oxygen isotopic fractionation of DO was investigated to enhance our understanding of the distinct DO consumption observed in the bottom layers of the center of the UB. We explored the relationship between DO and its oxygen isotope composition (δ18ODO) using data collected at a station located in the center of the UB in 2020, 2021, and 2022. An unforeseen decrease in δ18ODO in the bottom layer (> 1800 m) where DO was depleted was discovered. The overall DO consumption in the mesopelagic water layer (300–1000 m), primarily attributed to water column respiration, exhibited an isotopic fractionation factor (α) with 0.985 ± 0.001 in the δ18ODO/[O2] relationship. The consumptive isotope fractionation factor in the bottom waters near the sediments (approximately 2146 m) showed a value slightly higher (0.988 ± 0.002) than that in the mesopelagic water layer. This isotopic signature is likely due to a smaller fractionation in the bottom waters relative to the mesopelagic water. The isotopic evidence suggests the involvement of mineral oxidation associated with excess dissolved Mn and Fe in the bottom waters because mineral oxidation exhibits a smaller fractionation effect than respiration. Our study demonstrates that DO depletion results from multiple consumption processes, including respiration, mineral oxidation, and diffusive transport, and the isotopic behavior provides evidence that mineral oxidation significantly influences DO consumption.

We investigated dual carbon isotopes within the vertical water column at sites 67-1 and 67-2 of the western equatorial Indian Ocean to determine the source and age of particulate organic carbon (POC) and thus evaluated the contributions of modern and fossil (aged) POC. The concentration of POC ranged from 7 to 47.3 μgC L−1, δ13CPOC values ranged from –31.8 to –24.4‰, and Δ14CPOC values ranged from –548 to –111‰. Higher values of δ13CPOC and Δ14CPOC near the surface indicated an influence of autochthonous POC, whereas decreasing trends toward the bottom suggested a contribution of aged OC sources to the total POC pool. The contribution of fossil POC was lower near the surface, accounting for only 12% and 6% of the total POC at sites 67-1 and 67-2, respectively; however, in the deeper layers below 1,000 m, the contribution of fossil POC increased to 52% and 44% of the total POC at the two sites. Mechanisms for the increased contributions of fossil OC within deeper POC include the inflow of aged OC from sediments resuspended near slopes, the adsorption of old dissolved organic carbon in deep water masses, and the impact of aged OC that may originate from hydrothermal sources. This study highlights the importance of aged OC in the carbon cycle of the equatorial Indian Ocean.

A novel passive micromixer equipped with circulation promoters is proposed, and its mixing performance is simulated over a broad range of Reynolds numbers (0.1≤Re≤100). To evaluate the effectiveness of the circulation promoters, three different configurations are analyzed in terms of the degree of mixing (DOM) at the outlet and the associated pressure drop. Compared to other typical passive micromixers, the circulation promoter is shown to significantly enhance mixing performance. Among the three configurations of circulation promoters, Case 3 demonstrates the best performance, with a DOM exceeding 0.96 across the entire range of Reynolds numbers. At Re = 1, the DOM of Case 3 is 3.7 times larger than that of a modified Tesla micromixer, while maintaining a comparable pressure drop. The mixing enhancement of the present micromixer is particularly significant in the low and intermediate ranges of Reynolds numbers (Re<40). In the low range of Reynolds numbers (Re≤1), the mixing enhancement is primarily due to circulation promoters directing fluid flow from a concave wall to the opposite convex wall. In the intermediate range of Reynolds numbers (2≤Re<40), the mixing enhancement results from fluid flowing from one concave wall to another concave wall on the opposite side.

We propose a novel passive micromixer leveraging STC (split-to-circulate) flow characteristics and analyze its mixing performance comprehensively. Three distinct designs incorporating submerged circular walls were explored to achieve STC flow characteristics, facilitating flow along a convex surface and flow impingement on a concave surface. Across a broad Reynolds number range (0.1 to 80), the present micromixer substantially enhances mixing, with a degree of mixing (DOM) consistently exceeding 0.84. A novel passive micromixer based on curly baffles is proposed and optimized through the signal-to-noise analysis of various design parameters. The mixing performance of the proposed design was evaluated across a wide Reynolds number range, from 0.1 to 80. Through the analysis, the most influential parameter was identified, and its value was found to be constant regardless of the mixing mechanism. The optimized design, refined using the signal-to-noise analysis, demonstrated a significant enhancement of mixing performance, particularly in the low Reynolds number range (Re< 10). The design set obtained at the diffusion dominance range shows the highest degree of mixing (DOM) in the low Reynolds number range of Re< 10, while the design set optimized for the convection dominance range exhibited the least pressure drop across the entire Reynolds number spectrum (Re< 80). The present design approach proved to be a practical tool for identifying the most influential design parameter and achieving excellent mixing and pressure drop characteristics. The enhancement is mainly due to the curvature of the most influential design parameter.

To determine the effects of mesoscale eddies on sea-air CO2 flux, we investigated the surface fugacity of CO2 (surface fCO2) distribution in the northern Philippine Sea, where mesoscale eddies are common. Surface fCO2 showed large spatial variations, such that values were high in the non-eddy and cyclonic eddy regions, while they were low within the anticyclonic eddy. The maximum fCO2 was observed in the non-eddy region; higher fCO2 values were observed in the area surrounding the cyclonic eddy than at the center of the cyclonic eddy. Within the cyclonic eddy, the contribution of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) enrichment because of upwelling was considerably offset by cooling. In the non-eddy region, the contribution of DIC enrichment from upwelling was rarely offset by cooling; thus, the maximum fCO2 was observed in the non-eddy region. Surface fCO2 showed a robust correlation with sea surface temperature (SST) within the cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies, but it did not display any correlation in the non-eddy region. Temperature was a major factor that controlled surface fCO2 in the anticyclonic eddy, but this effect was absent in the cyclonic eddy. Temperature-normalized fCO2 exhibited a clear negative relationship with SST in the cyclonic eddy and the non-eddy region, indicating that surface fCO2 was considerably affected by the upwelling of high-fCO2 deep water in both regions. Sea-air CO2 fluxes ranged from 0.011 to 9.92 mmol m-2 day-1 and all values were positive, indicating that the entire study area acted as a CO2 source during the research period. The estimated mean sea-air CO2 fluxes in the cyclonic eddy, anticyclonic eddy, and non-eddy region were 1.10 ± 0.75, 0.64 ± 0.66, and 1.42 ± 1.12 mmol m-2 day-1, respectively. The sea-air CO2 fluxes considerably varied according to eddy type; they were almost twofold higher in the cyclonic eddy than in the anticyclonic eddy. In the cyclonic eddy and non-eddy regions, upwelling caused surface fCO2 to increase, thereby increasing sea-air CO2 flux.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study is to develop a clinical application program that automatically calculates the effect for secondary cancer risk (SCR) of individual patient. The program was designed based on accurate dose calculations using patient computed tomography (CT) data and Monte Carlo engine. Automated patient-specific evaluation program was configured to calculate SCR. Methods The application program is designed to re-calculate the beam sequence of treatment plan using the Monte Carlo engine and patient CT data, so it is possible to accurately calculate and evaluate scatter and leakage radiation, difficult to calculate in TPS. The Monte Carlo dose calculation system was performed through stoichiometric calibration using patient CT data. The automatic SCR evaluation program in application program created with a MATLAB was set to analyze the results to calculate SCR. The SCR for organ of patient was calculated based on Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR) VII models. The program is designed to sequentially calculate organ equivalent dose (OED), excess absolute risk (EAR), excess relative risk (ERR), and the lifetime attributable risk (LAR) in consideration of 3D dose distribution analysis. In order to confirm the usefulness of the developed clinical application program, the result values from clinical application program were compared with the manual calculation method used in the previous study. Results The OED values calculated in program were calculated to be at most approximately 13.3% higher than results in TPS. The SCR result calculated by the developed clinical application program showed a maximum difference of 1.24% compared to the result of the conventional manual calculation method. And it was confirmed that EAR, ERR and LAR values can be easily calculated by changing the biological parameters. Conclusions We have developed a patient-specific SCR evaluation program that can be used conveniently in the clinic. The program consists of a Monte Carlo dose calculation system for accurate calculation of scatter and leakage radiation and a patient-specific automatic SCR evaluation program using 3D dose distribution. The clinical application program that improved the disadvantages of the existing process can be used as an index for evaluating a patient treatment plan.

A novel passive micromixer based on multiple baffles and a submergence scheme was designed, and its mixing performance was simulated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.1 to 80. The degree of mixing (DOM) at the outlet and the pressure drop between the inlets and outlet were used to assess the mixing performance of the present micromixer. The mixing performance of the present micromixer showed a significant enhancement over a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.1 ≤ Re ≤ 80). The DOM was further enhanced by using a specific submergence scheme. At low Reynolds numbers (Re < 5), submergence scheme Sub24 produced the highest DOM, approximately 0.57, which was 1.38 times higher than the case with no submergence. This enhancement was due to the fluid flowing from or toward the submerged space, creating strong upward or downward flow at the cross-section. At high Reynolds numbers (Re > 10), the DOM of Sub1234 became the highest, reaching approximately 0.93 for Re = 20, which was 2.75 times higher than the case with no submergence. This enhancement was caused by a large vortex formed across the whole cross-section, causing vigorous mixing between the two fluids. The large vortex dragged the interface between the two fluids along the vortex perimeter, elongating the interface. The amount of submergence was optimized in terms of DOM, and it was independent of the number of mixing units. The optimum submergence values were 90 μm for Sub24 and Re = 1, 100 μm for Sub234 and Re = 5, and 70 μm for Sub1234 and Re = 20.

We detected a new target quantitative trait locus (QTL) for lodging resistance in rice by analyzing lodging resistance to typhoons (Maysak and Haishen) using a scale from 0 (no prostrating) to 1 (little prostrating or prostrating) to record the resistance score in a Cheongcheong/Nagdong double haploid rice population. Five quantitative trait loci for lodging resistance to typhoons were detected. Among them, qTyM6 and qTyH6 exhibited crucial effects of locus RM3343–RM20318 on chromosome 6, which overlaps with our previous rice lodging studies for the loci qPSLSA6-2, qPSLSB6-5, and qLTI6-2. Within the target locus RM3343–RM20318, 12 related genes belonging to the cytochrome P450 protein family were screened through annotation. Os06g0599200 (OsTyM/Hq6) was selected for further analysis. We observed that the culm and panicle lengths were positively correlated with lodging resistance to typhoons. However, the yield was negatively correlated with lodging resistance to typhoons. The findings of this study improve an understanding of rice breeding, particularly the culm length, early maturing, and heavy panicle varieties, and the mechanisms by which the plant’s architecture can resist natural disasters such as typhoons to ensure food safety. These results also provide the insight that lodging resistance in rice may be associated with major traits such as panicle length, culm length, tiller number, and heading date, and thereby improvements in these traits can increase lodging resistance to typhoons. Moreover, rice breeding should focus on maintaining suitable varieties that can withstand the adverse effects of climate change in the future and provide better food security.

In global oceans, ubiquitous and persistent sound scattering layers (SL) are frequently detected with echosounders. The southwest Indian Ocean has a unique feature, a region of significant upwelling known as the Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge (SCTR), which affects sea surface temperature and marine ecosystems. Despite their importance, sound SL within and beyond the SCTR are poorly understood. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of the sound SL within and beyond the SCTR in connection with environmental properties, and dominant zooplankton. To this end, the region north of the 12°S latitude in the survey area was defined as SCTR, and the region south of 12°S was defined as non-SCTR. The results indicated contrasting oceanographic properties based on the depth layers between SCTR and non-SCTR regions. Distribution dynamics of the sound SL differed between the two regions. In particular, the diel vertical migration pattern, acoustic scattering values, metrics, and positional properties of acoustic scatterers showed two distinct features. In addition, the density of zooplankton sampled was higher in SCTR than in the non-SCTR region. This is the first study to present bioacoustic and hydrographic water properties within and beyond the SCTR in the southwest Indian Ocean.

The East Sea (ES; Sea of Japan) meridional overturning circulation (MOC) serves as a crucial mechanism for the transportation of dissolved, colloidal, and suspended particulate matters, including pollutants, on the surface to deep waters via thermohaline circulation. Therefore, understanding the structure of the ES MOC is critical for characterizing its temporal and spatial distribution. Numerous studies have estimated these parameters indirectly using chemical tracers, severely limiting the accuracy of the results. In this study, we provide a method for directly estimating the turnover times of the ES MOC using the stream functions calculated from HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) reanalysis data by averaging the flow pattern in the meridional 2-D plane. Because the flow pattern is not consistent but various over time, three cases of stream function fields were computed over a 20-year period. The turnover time was estimated by calculating the time required for water particles to circulate along the streamlines. In the cases of multiple (two or three) convection cells, we considered all possible scenarios of the exchange of water particles between adjacent cells, so that they circulated over those cells until finally returning to the original position and completing the journey on the ES MOC. Three different cell cases were tested, and each case had different water particle exchange scenarios. The resulting turnover times were 17.91–58.59 years, 26.41–37.28 years, and 8.68–45.44 years for the mean, deep, and shallow convection cases, respectively. The maximum turnover time, namely 58.59 years, was obtained when circulating the water particle over all three cells, and it was approximately half of that estimated by the chemical tracers in previous studies (∼100 years). This underestimation arose because the streamlines and water particle movement were not calculated in the shallow (3,000 m) in this study. Regardless, the results of this study provide insight into the ES MOC dynamics and indicate that the traditional chemical turnover time represents only one of the various turnover scenarios that could exist in the ES.

A passive micromixer based on the modified Tesla mixing unit was designed by embedding tip clearance above the wedge-shape divider, and its mixing performance was simulated over a wider range of the Reynolds numbers from 0.1 to 80. The mixing performance was evaluated in terms of the degree of mixing (DOM) at the outlet and the required pressure load between inlet and outlet. The height of tip clearance was varied from 40 μm to 80 μm, corresponding to 25% to 33% of the micromixer depth. The numerical results show that the mixing enhancement by the tip clearance is noticeable over a wide range of the Reynolds numbers Re < 50. The height of tip clearance is optimized in terms of the DOM, and the optimum value is roughly h = 60 μm. It corresponds to 33% of the present micromixer depth. The mixing enhancement in the molecular diffusion regime of mixing, Re ≤ 1, is obtained by drag and connection of the interface in the two sub-streams of each Tesla mixing unit. It appears as a wider interface in the tip clearance zone. In the intermediate range of the Reynolds number, 1 < Re ≤ 50, the mixing enhancement is attributed to the interaction of the flow through the tip clearance and the secondary flow in the vortex zone of each Tesla mixing unit. When the Reynolds number is larger than about 50, vortices are formed at various locations and drive the mixing in the modified Tesla micromixer. For the Reynolds number of Re = 80, a pair of vortices is formed around the inlet and outlet of each Tesla mixing unit, and it plays a role as a governing mechanism in the convection-dominant regime of mixing. This vortex pattern is little affected as long as the tip clearance remains smaller than about h = 70 μm. The DOM at the outlet is little enhanced by the presence of tip clearance for the Reynolds numbers Re ≥ 50. The tip clearance contributes to reducing the required pressure load for the same value of the DOM.

A new passive micro-mixer with mixing units stacked in the cross flow direction was proposed, and its performance was evaluated numerically. The present micro-mixer consisted of eight mixing units. Each mixing unit had four baffles, and they were arranged alternatively in the cross flow and transverse direction. The mixing units were stacked in four different ways: one step, two step, four step, and eight step stacking. A numerical study was carried out for the Reynolds numbers from 0.5 to 50. The corresponding volume flow rate ranged from 6.33 μL/min to 633 μL/min. The mixing performance was analyzed in terms of the degree of mixing (DOM) and relative mixing energy cost (MEC). The numerical results showed a noticeable enhancement of the mixing performance compared with other micromixers. The mixing enhancement was achieved by two flow characteristics: baffle wall impingement by a stream of high concentration and swirl motion within the mixing unit. The baffle wall impingement by a stream of high concentration was observed throughout all Reynolds numbers. The swirl motion inside the mixing unit was observed in the cross flow direction, and became significant as the Reynolds number increased to larger than about five. The eight step stacking showed the best performance for Reynolds numbers larger than about two, while the two step stacking was better for Reynolds numbers less than about two.

A passive micromixer was designed by combining two mixing units: the cross-channel split and recombined (CC-SAR) and a mixing cell with baffles (MC-B). The passive micromixer was comprised of eight mixing slots that corresponded to four combination units; two mixing slots were grouped as one combination unit. The combination of the two mixing units was based on four combination schemes: (A) first mixing unit, (B) first combination unit, (C) first combination module, and (D) second combination module. The statistical significance of the four combination schemes was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) in terms of the degree of mixing (DOM) and mixing energy cost (MEC). The DOM and MEC were simulated numerically for three Reynolds numbers (Re = 0.5, 2, and 50), representing three mixing regimes. The combination scheme (B), using different mixing units in the first two mixing slots, was significant for Re = 2 and 50. The four combination schemes had little effect on the mixing performance of a passive micromixer operating in the mixing regime of molecular dominance. The combination scheme (B) was generalized to arbitrary mixing slots, and its significance was analyzed for Re = 2 and 50. The general combination scheme meant two different mixing units in two consecutive mixing slots. The numerical simulation results showed that the general combination scheme was statistically significant in the first three combination units for Re = 2, and significant in the first two combination units for Re = 50. The combined micromixer based on the general combination scheme throughout the entire micromixer showed the best mixing performance over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, compared to other micromixers that did not adopt completely the general combination scheme. The most significant enhancement due to the general combination scheme was observed in the transition mixing scheme and was negligible in the molecular dominance scheme. The combination order was less significant after three combination units.

Purpose: We aim to fabricate a thermoplastic poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) Lab-on-a-Chip device to perform continuous- flow polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) for rapid molecular detection of foodborne pathogen bacteria. Methods: A miniaturized plastic device was fabricated by utilizing PMMA substrates mediated by poly(dimethylsiloxane) interfacial coating, enabling bonding under mild conditions, and thus avoiding the deformation or collapse of microchannels. Surface characterizations were carried out and bond strength was measured. The feasibility of the Lab-on-a-Chip device for performing on-chip PCR utilizing a lab-made, portable dual heater was evaluated. The results were compared with those obtained using a commercially available thermal cycler. Results: A PMMA Lab-on-a-Chip device was designed and fabricated for conducting PCR using foodborne pathogens as sample targets. A robust bond was established between the PMMA substrates, which is essential for performing miniaturized PCR on plastic. The feasibility of on-chip PCR was evaluated using Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Cronobacter condimenti, two worldwide foodborne pathogens, and the target amplicons were successfully amplified within 25 minutes. Conclusions: In this study, we present a novel design of a low-cost and high-throughput thermoplastic PMMA Lab-on-a-Chip device for conducting microscale PCR, and we enable rapid molecular diagnoses of two important foodborne pathogens in minute resolution using this device. In this regard, the introduced highly portable system design has the potential to enable PCR investigations of many diseases quickly and accurately.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improve the uptake of immobile mineral nutrients such as phosphate, thereby improving plant growth. In acid sulfate soil (ASS), AMF spore density is generally low which impacts root colonization and phosphate uptake. Thus, inoculation may help increase AMF colonization of crops grown in ASS. AMF spore density decreases after cultivation of a non-host crop or bare fallow. In addition, preceding crops affect the growth and yield of subsequent crops. The production of AMF inocula requires AMF-compatible plants. The objective of the present study is to elucidate the effect of preceding crops on the persistence of inoculated AMF and growth of succeeding maize under an ASS condition with lime application. Spore density of AMF after cultivation of preceding crops (soybean or job’s tears) was maintained in comparison to fallow leading to higher AMF colonization of maize and improved plant growth. Thus, maintenance of AMF spore density, either through selection of preceding crops or application of AMF inoculum, may be a viable strategy to improve maize growth in limed ASS of Thailand.

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach), a C4 tropical species, has been used for forage since it has high dry matter productivity, sustainability over several years in low-altitudinal sites of Kyushu, and little damage from serious pests. Recently, this grass has gained attention due to its potential as a bioethanol feedstock and for phytoremediation. Napiergrass cultivar Wruk Wona was grown as an annual crop in cadmium- (Cd-) contaminated soils under two cutting frequencies. Annual dry matter yield was not affected significantly by cutting frequency, but the concentration and uptake of Cd were higher when cut twice rather than only once, due to high Cd content of the herbage from the second cutting. Therefore, the soil Cd concentration was reduced by 4.6% when managed by cutting twice in a single year of Napiergrass cultivation.

However, in 2018, the POC fluxes in the SCTR regions (8.52 ± 7.89 mmol C m-2 d-1) were one order of magnitude higher than those observed in the non-SCTR regions (0.63 ± 0.07 mmol C m-2 d-1), which appeared to be related to the strong upwelling of subsurface water.
