Understanding the invasion of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) into adjacent evergreen broadleaf forest based on functional traits is crucial due to its significant influence on ecosystem processes. However, existing research has primarily focused on above- or below-ground traits in isolation, lacking a comprehensive integration of both. In this study, we conducted a trait-based analysis including 23 leaf traits and 11 root traits in three forest types - bamboo forest, mixed bamboo and broadleaf forest, and evergreen broadleaf forest - to investigate trait differences, phenotypic integration, and above- and below-ground resource strategies in bamboo and broadleaf species. Our findings demonstrated significant differences in leaf and root key traits between bamboo and broadleaf species, strongly supporting the “phenotypic divergence hypothesis”. Bamboo exhibited stronger trait correlations compared to broadleaf species, indicating higher phenotypic integration. Above- and below-ground strategies were characterized by trade-offs rather than coordination, resulting in a multi-dimensional trait syndrome. Specifically, a unidimensional leaf economics spectrum revealed that bamboo with higher leaf N concentrations (LNC), P concentrations (LPC), and specific leaf area (SLA) adopted a “fast acquisitive” above-ground strategy, while broadleaf species with thicker leaves employed a “slow conservative” above-ground strategy. A two-dimensional root trait syndrome indicated a “conservation” gradient with bamboo adopting a “slow conservative” below-ground strategy associated with higher root tissue density (RTD), and broadleaf species exhibiting a “fast acquisitive” below-ground strategy linked to higher root N concentrations (RNC) and P concentrations (RPC), and a “collaboration” gradient probably ranging from broadleaf species with a “do-it-yourself” strategy characterized by high specific root length (SRL), to bamboo adopting an “outsourcing” strategy with thicker roots. In conclusion, key trait divergence from coexisting broadleaf species, higher phenotypic integration, and multi-dimensional opposite above- and below-ground resource strategies confer competitive advantages to moso bamboo, shedding light on the mechanistic understanding of its invasion into subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest and providing theoretical guidance for maintaining the stability of subtropical forest ecosystem.

Abstract Purpose The specific neurovascular compression (NVC) event responsible for the symptomatic manifestation of hemifacial spasm (HFS) remains difficult to assess accurately using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We aim to evaluate the MRI characteristics of HFS. Method We retrospectively included patients with HFS and divided them into a test group (n = 186) and a validation group (n = 28). The presence, severity, and offending vessel type of NVC in each portion, and the orientation of the offending vessel around the facial nerve, were recorded. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate correlations using test group. The validation group was used to verify whether our findings improved diagnostic performance. Results Deformity in the proximal cisternal segment was significantly correlated with HFS occurrence (odds ratio [OR]: 256.58, p = .002), whereas contact was not (p = .233). IntroductionThe pivotal roles of both abundant and rare bacteria in ecosystem function are widely acknowledged. Despite this, the diversity elevational patterns of these two bacterial taxa in different seasons and influencing factors remains underexplored, especially in the case of rare bacteria.MethodsHere, a metabarcoding approach was employed to investigate elevational patterns of these two bacterial communities in different seasons and tested the roles of soil physico-chemical properties in structuring these abundant and rare bacterial community.Results and discussionOur findings revealed that variation in elevation and season exerted notably effects on the rare bacterial diversity. Despite the reactions of abundant and rare communities to the elevational gradient exhibited similarities during both summer and winter, distinct elevational patterns were observed in their respective diversity. Specifically, abundant bacterial diversity exhibited a roughly U-shaped pattern along the elevation gradient, while rare bacterial diversity increased with the elevational gradient. Soil moisture and N:P were the dominant factor leading to the pronounced divergence in elevational distributions in summer. Soil temperature and pH were the key factors in winter. The network analysis revealed the bacteria are better able to adapt to environmental fluctuations during the summer season. Additionally, compared to abundant bacteria, the taxonomy of rare bacteria displayed a higher degree of complexity. Our discovery contributes to advancing our comprehension of intricate dynamic diversity patterns in abundant and rare bacteria in the context of environmental gradients and seasonal fluctuations.

This study aimed to develop and validate a combined nomogram model based on superb microvascular imaging (SMI)-based deep learning (DL), radiomics characteristics, and clinical factors for noninvasive differentiation between immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) and non-IgAN. We prospectively enrolled patients with chronic kidney disease who underwent renal biopsy from May 2022 to December 2022 and performed an ultrasound and SMI the day before renal biopsy. The selected patients were randomly divided into training and testing cohorts in a 7:3 ratio. We extracted DL and radiometric features from the two-dimensional ultrasound and SMI images. A combined nomograph model was developed by combining the predictive probability of DL with clinical factors using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The proposed model’s utility was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics, calibration, and decision curve analysis. In this study, 120 patients with primary glomerular disease were included, including 84 in the training and 36 in the test cohorts. In the testing cohort, the ROC of the radiomics model was 0.816 (95% CI:0.663–0.968), and the ROC of the DL model was 0.844 (95% CI:0.717–0.971). The nomogram model combined with independent clinical risk factors (IgA and hematuria) showed strong discrimination, with an ROC of 0.884 (95% CI:0.773–0.996) in the testing cohort. Decision curve analysis verified the clinical practicability of the combined nomogram. The combined nomogram model based on SMI can accurately and noninvasively distinguish IgAN from non-IgAN and help physicians make clearer patient treatment plans.

To increase the antitumor drug concentration in the liver tumor site and improve the therapeutic effects, a functionalized liposome (PPP-LIP) with tumor targetability and enhanced internalization after matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2)-triggered cell-penetrating peptide (TATp) exposure was modified with myrcludex B (a synthetic HBV preS-derived lipopeptide endowed with compelling liver tropism) for liver tumor-specific delivery. After intravenous administration, PPP-LIP was mediated by myrcludex B to reach the hepatocyte surface. The MMP2-overexpressing tumor microenvironment deprotected PEG, exposing it to TATp, facilitating tumor penetration and subsequent efficient destruction of tumor cells. In live imaging of small animals and cellular uptake, PPP-LIP was taken up much more than typical unmodified liposomes in the ICR mouse liver and liver tumor cells. Hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT)-loaded PPP-LIP showed a better antitumor effect than commercially available HCPT injections among MTT, three-dimensional (3 D) tumor ball, and tumor-bearing nude mouse experiments. Our findings indicated that PPP-LIP nanocarriers could be a promising tumor-targeted medication delivery strategy for treating liver cancers with elevated MMP2 expression.

Foliage leaves are the primary photosynthetic organ of the majority of vascular plants, and their area vs. biomass scaling relationships provide valuable insights into the capacity and investment in light interception, which is critical to plant growth and performance. The “diminishing returns” hypothesis (DRH), which is based primarily on data from gymnosperms and angiosperms, posits that leaf (lamina) area scales with leaf dry mass. on average with a scaling exponent less than 1.0. However, it remains uncertain whether DRH applies to ferns or whether ecological factors affect the scaling exponents governing fern leaf morphometrics. To address this issue, 182 individuals of 28 subtropical ferns species were studied at low, medium, and high elevations (i.e., 600 m, 900 m, and 1200 m, respectively) in Mount Wuyi National Park, Jiangxi Province, China. The scaling relationships between leaf area and leaf biomass for individual and total leaf of ferns at different elevations were examined by using standardized major axis regression protocols. Analyses of the 28 fern species (using Blomberg K-value protocols) indicated no phylogenetic biases among the species compositions of the three different elevations. In addition, at the individual plant level, individual leaf area (ILA) did not differ significantly among the three different elevations (P > 0.05). However, individual leaf mass (ILM) was significantly higher at 900m than at 1200m (P < 0.05), resulting in a significantly higher leaf mass per area (LMA) at the 900m elevation than at the 600m and 1200m elevations (P < 0.05). The ILA and ILM at the 900m elevation were significantly higher than at the 600m elevation (P < 0.05). At the species level, ILA and ILM did not differ significantly among the three elevations (P > 0.05). The total leaf area per individual (TLA) did not differ significantly across the different elevations (P > 0.05). However, total leaf mass per individual (TLM) did differ significantly (P < 0.05). At the individual plant level, the scaling exponents for ILA vs. ILM and TLA vs. TLM at the three different elevations were all significantly less than 1.0 (P < 0.05), which was consistent with the DRH. At the species level, the scaling exponents for the ILA vs. ILM were significantly less than 1.0 at the middle and high elevations, but not at the low elevation. The scaling exponents of the TLA and TLM were numerically highest in the middle elevation, and all were less than 1.0 for the three elevations. These results indicate that the scaling relationships of leaf area versus mass of subtropical ferns at different elevations support the DRH hypothesis. The study further informs our understanding of the resource allocation strategies of an ancient and diverse plant lineage.

Carbon absorption capability and morphological traits are crucial for plant leaf function performance. Here, we investigated the five bamboos at different elevations in Wuyi Mountain to clarify how the leaf trait responds to the elevational gradient and drives the photosynthetic capacity variations. The Standardized Major Axis Regression (SMA) analyses and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) are applied to identify how the bamboo leaf trait, including the ratio of leaf width to length (W/L), leaf mass per area (LMA), photosynthesis rates (Pn), leaf nitrogen, and phosphorus concentration (Leaf N and Leaf P) response to elevation environment, and the driving mechanism of Pn changes. Across the five bamboo species, our results revealed that leaf P scaled isometrically with respect to W/L, leaf N scaled allometrically as the 0.80-power of leaf P, and leaf N and leaf P scaled allometrically to Pn, with the exponents of 0.58 and 0.73, respectively. Besides, the SEM result showed altitude, morphological trait (W/L and LMA), and chemical trait (leaf N and leaf P) could together explain the 44% variations of Pn, with a standard total effect value of 70.0%, 38.5%, 23.6% to leaf P, leaf N, and W/L, respectively. The five bamboo species along the different elevational share an isometric scaling relationship between their leaf P and W/L, providing partial support for the general rule and operating between morphological and chemical traits. More importantly, the leaf W/L and leaf P as the main trait that affects leaf area and P utilization in growth and thus drives bamboo leaf photosynthetic capacity variations in different elevations.

Abstract Discrete element calculations of the top-coal drawing process for different gangue-coal density ratios were conducted to investigate the effect of the gangue-coal density ratio on the drawing mechanism in longwall top-coal caving. The effects were analyzed for the drawing body, the top-coal boundary, and the recovery of top coal. The results show that for increasing density ratio, the initial drawing body on the goaf side is farther away from the drawing support and its width and volume gradually increase. The upper part of the sickle-shaped drawing body extends near the initial drawing body with increasing density ratio in the normal cycling stage, and the distance from the drawing body to the initial drawing body is its maximum width. The larger the density ratio, the smaller the height of the top coal above the goaf at the end of the initial drawing process. The height of the top-coal boundary decreases with increasing density ratio, until it reaches a limit. In a normal cycle, due to hysteretic development, the top-coal boundary moves toward the goaf until the density ratio is approximately 2.0, which is consistent with the physical experiment results. Finally, increasing the advance length of the working face is beneficial for increasing the overall recovery of top coal.

Hypoxia, as a typical hallmark of the tumour microenvironment (TME), has been verified to exist in most malignancies and greatly hinders the outcome of tumour treatments, including chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Various approaches to alleviate tumour hypoxia have been reported. Among them, biomimetic nanomaterial-facilitated tumour oxygenation strategies, based on the engagement of human endogenous proteins, red blood cells, the cell membrane, and catalase, are the most impressive due to their excellent tumour active-targeting ability and superior tumour-selective capability, which, however, have not yet been systematically reviewed. Herein, we are ready to describe the current progress in biomimetic nanomaterial-facilitated tumour oxygenation strategies and corresponding improvements in tumour treatment outputs. In this review, the underlying mechanism behind the superior effect of these biomimetic nanomaterials, compared with other materials, on alleviating the hypoxic TME is highlighted. Additionally, the ongoing problems and potential solutions are also discussed.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the predictors and threshold of failure in neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome. Methods: Newborns with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome aged 0–28 days and gestational age ≥36 weeks were included in the study if their cases were managed with non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatments. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they died before discharge. Predictors of non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatment failure were sought, and the threshold of predictors was calculated. Results: A total of 103 patients were included in the study. A total of 77 (74.8%) survived hospitalization and were discharged, whereas 26 (25.2%) died. Receiver operating characteristic analysis of oxygen index, pH, base excess, and combinations of these indicators demonstrated the advantage of the combination of oxygen index and base excess over the others variables regarding their predictive ability. The area under the curve for the combination of oxygen index and base excess was 0.865. When the cut-off values of oxygen index and base excess were 30.0 and −7.4, respectively, the sensitivity and specificity for predicting death were 77.0% and 84.0%, respectively. The model with base excess added a net reclassification improvement of 0.090 to the model without base excess. Conclusion: The combination of oxygen index and base excess can be used as a predictor of outcomes in neonates receiving non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome. Menopause is associated with dyslipidemia and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the underlying mechanism of dyslipidemia is attributed to an insufficiency of estrogen. In this study, we find that estrogen mediates an atherosclerotic-protective action via estrogen receptor alpha/SREBP-1 signaling. Increased lipid accumulation and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-uptake in HepG2 cells and THP-1 macrophages were induced by treatment of mixed hyperlipidemic serum from postmenopausal women; 17β-estradiol [estrogen (E2)] (10 nM) administration significantly improved hyperlipidemic profiles, relieved fatty-liver damage and attenuated the plaque area in the heart chamber of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed ovariectomized (OVX) ApoE–/– mice. Expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP)-1 mRNA of circulating leukocytes in postmenopausal women was strongly correlated to the serum E2 level. Exploration of data from the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database revealed that expression of SREBP-1 protein correlated to expression of estrogen receptor (ESR)α protein in the liver, blood and in normal tissue. Genetic overexpression/inhibition of ESRα resulted in increased/decreased SREBP-1 expression as well as attenuated/deteriorated lipid deposition in vitro. An inhibitor of the protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (AKT/mTOR) pathway, AZD8055, abolished ESRα-induced SREBP-1 expression in HepG2 cells. Moreover, E2 and statin co-treatment significantly reduced lipid accumulation in vitro and hindered the progression of atherosclerosis and fatty-liver damage in OVX ApoE–/– mice. Collectively, our results suggest that estrogen could exerted its atherosclerotic-protective action via ESRα/SREBP-1 signaling. E2 might enhance the cellular sensitivity of statins and could be used as a novel therapeutic strategy against atherosclerotic disorders in postmenopausal women.

Social-economic development and urbanization greatly modify landscape patterns and their associated ecological processes at regional scales, resulting in serious landscape ecological risk (LER). Effectively evaluating the LER is the basis for sustainable land use and development of regions. Because of the uncertainties in future socioeconomic development, precisely projecting future LER distribution is still challenging. To overcome this weakness, by using the Fujian Delta region as a case study, we employed patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model coupled with multiple linear regression and a Markov chain model to project the landscape patterns in 2050. The Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were selected as the scenario framework. Thus, the spatiotemporal characteristics of the landscape pattern changes and LER from 2000 to 2020 and the projections for 2050 under different localized SSPs scenarios were explored. The results show that the cropland and water areas changed remarkably during 2000–2020. The PLUS model based on the couple of multiple linear regression and Markov chain model has higher prediction accuracy (FoM = 0.244) than that without the multiple linear regression (FoM = 0.146). The simulation results show that the urban land continued to expand westward and northward in 2050. Large amounts of cropland will be transformed into urban land in the eastern part. The conversion area is the largest under the SSP2 scenario, and the smallest area occurs under the SSP4 scenario. From 2000 to 2020, the LER exhibited the characteristics of an east–west polarized spatial distribution, and the LER gradually increased. The localized SSP4 scenario is projected to have the largest LER, and the smallest LER occurs under the SSP1 scenario. The conversions from cropland to urban land will lead to the most significant increases in LER, followed by the conversion of grassland to urban land.

Climate change could negatively alter plant ecosystems if rising temperatures exceed optimal conditions for obtaining carbon. The acclimation of plants to higher temperatures could mitigate this effect, but the potential of subtropical forests to acclimate still requires elucidation. We used space-for-time substitution to determine the photosynthetic and respiratory-temperature response curves, optimal temperature of photosynthesis (Topt), photosynthetic rate at Topt, temperature sensitivity (Q10), and the rate of respiration at a standard temperature of 25°C (R25) for Pinus taiwanensis at five elevations (1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, and 2000 m) in two seasons (summer and winter) in the Wuyi Mountains in China. The response of photosynthesis in P. taiwanensis leaves to temperature at the five elevations followed parabolic curves, and the response of respiration to temperature increased with temperature. Topt was higher in summer than winter at each elevation and decreased significantly with increasing elevation. Q10 decreased significantly with increasing elevation in summer but not winter. These results showed a strong thermal acclimation of foliar photosynthesis and respiration to current temperatures across elevations and seasons, and that R25 increased significantly with elevation and were higher in winter than summer at each elevation indicating that the global warming can decrease R25. These results strongly suggest that this thermal acclimation will likely occur in the coming decades under climate change, so the increase in respiration rates of P. taiwanensis in response to climatic warming may be smaller than predicted and thus may not increase atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

Watershed landscape ecological security and ecosystem service functions are the material basis and environmental guarantee for promoting socioeconomic development. Analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of landscape ecological risks (LERs) and ecosystem services (ESs) and exploring the coupling coordination relationship between the two are of great significance for promoting the construction of ecological civilization and achieving sustainable development in the watershed. With the Min River Basin as the study area, the landscape ecological risk assessment, Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), and Carnegie Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) models were used to evaluate the LERs and ESs based on the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), and the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model was used to predict the land use distribution of the Min River Basin in 2030. On this basis, the coupling coordination degree model was used to explore the coupling coordination relationship between the LERs and ESs. The results show that, from 2000 to 2020, the LER of the Min River Basin gradually decreased, and the overall spatial distribution pattern was “high in the north and low in the south”. The ES of the Min River Basin initially decreased and then increased, showing a spatial distribution pattern of “low in the south and high in the north”. Among the SSPs in 2030, the LER is the largest under the SSP3 scenario and the smallest under the SSP4 scenario. The ES improvement is the most significant under the SSP1 scenario and the lowest under the SSP3 scenario. From 2000 to 2030, the coupling coordination degree of the Min River Basin first decreased and then increased, showing a spatial distribution pattern of “high in the south and low in the north”. Among the five SSPs, the coupling coordination degree was the highest under SSP1. The spatial distribution of urban area is the main driving factor affecting the coupling coordination relationship between the LER and ES, and the development of social and economy is the beginning of landscape pattern optimization.

The leaf economics spectrum (LES) characterizes multivariate correlations that confine the global diversity of leaf functional traits onto a single axis of variation. Although LES is well established for traits of sun leaves, it is unclear how well LES characterizes the diversity of traits for shade leaves. Here, we evaluate LES using the sun and shade leaves of 75 woody species sampled at the extremes of a within-canopy light gradient in a subtropical forest. Shading significantly decreased the mean values of LMA and the rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration, but had no discernable effect on nitrogen and phosphorus content. Sun and shade leaves manifested the same relationships among Nmass, Pmass, Amass, and Rmass (i.e., the slopes of log–log scaling relations of LES traits did not differ between sun and shade leaves). However, the difference between the normalization constants of shade and sun leaves was correlated with functional trait plasticity. Although the generality of this finding should be evaluated further using larger datasets comprising more phylogenetically diverse taxa and biomes, these findings support a unified LES across shade as well as sun leaves.

The relationship between leaf and stem biomass as well as the relationship between leaf biomass and stem length and diameter are important to our understanding of a broad range of important plant scaling relationship because of their relationship to photosynthesis and thus growth. To understand how twig architecture (i.e., current year leaves, and stem diameter and length) affects stem diameter and length, and leaf number and biomass, we examined the twigs of 64 woody species collected from three forest types along an elevational gradient in the Wuyi Mountains, Jiangxi Province, China. We also compared the scaling relationships we observed with biomass allocation patterns reported at the whole tree level. Our results revealed isometric relationship between leaf and stem biomass on twigs despite differences in forest communities and despite changes in environmental factors along an elevational gradient. Across the 64 species, from twigs to individual trees, leaf biomass scaled approximately as the 2.0-power of stem diameter (but not for stem length or leaf number). These results help to identify a general rule that operates at two different levels of biological organization (twigs and whole trees). The scaling relationship between leaf biomass and stem diameter in twigs is insensitive to differences in species composition, elevation, or forest type. We speculate that this rule emerges because stem diameter serves as a proxy for the amount of resources supplied per unit cross section to developing leaves and for the flow of photosynthates from mature leaves to the rest of the plant body.

The conventional CO electrochemical gas sensor uses aqueous H2SO4 solution as electrolyte, with inevitable problems, such as the drying and leakage of electrolyte. Thus, research on new alternative electrolytes is an attractive field in electrochemical gas sensors. In this paper, the application of a new fumed SiO2 gel electrolyte was studied in electrochemical gas sensors. The effects of fumed SiO2 and H2SO4 contents on the performance of the CO gas sensor were investigated. The results showed that the optimized composition of the SiO2 gel electrolyte was 4.8% SiO2, 38% H2SO4, and 0.005% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Compared with aqueous H2SO4, the gel electrolyte had better water retention ability. The signal current of the sensor was proportional to the CO concentration. The sensitivity to CO was 78.6 nA/ppm, and the response and recovery times were 31 and 38 s, respectively. The detection limit was 2 ppm. The linear range was from 2 to 500 ppm. The gel electrolyte CO sensor possesses equivalent performance to that with aqueous electrolyte.

Understanding the response of biomass allocation in twigs (the terminal branches of current-year shoots) to environmental change is crucial for elucidating forest ecosystem carbon storage, carbon cycling, and plant life history strategies under a changing climate. On the basis of interspecies investigations of broad-leaved plants, previous studies have demonstrated that plants respond to environmental factors by allocating biomass in an allometric manner between support tissues (i.e., stems) and the leaf biomass of twigs, where the scaling exponent (i.e., slope of a log-log linear relationship, α) is constant, and the scaling constant (i.e., intercept of a log-log linear relationship, log β) varies with respect to environmental factors. However, little is known about whether the isometric scaling exponents of such biomass allocations remain invariant for single species, particularly conifers, at different altitudes and in different growing periods. In this study, we investigated how twig biomass allocation varies with elevation and period among Pinus hwangshanensis Hsia trees growing in the mountains of Southeast China. Specifically, we explored how twig stem mass, needle mass, and needle area varied throughout the growing period (early, mid-, late) and at three elevations in the Wuyi Mountains. Standardized major axis analysis was used to compare the scaling exponents and scaling constants between the biomass allocations of within-twig components. Scaling relationships between these traits differed with growing period and altitude gradient. During the different growing periods, there was an isometric scaling relationship, with a common slope of 1.0 (i.e., α ≈ 1.0), between needle mass and twig mass (the sum of the total needle mass and the stem mass), whereas there were allometric scaling relationships between the stem mass and twig mass and between the needle mass and stem mass of P. hwangshanensis. The scaling constants (log β) for needle mass vs. twig mass and for needle mass vs. stem mass increased progressively across the growing stages, whereas the scaling constants of stem mass vs. twig mass showed the opposite pattern. The scaling exponents (α) of needle area with respect to needle biomass increased significantly with growing period, changing from an allometric relationship (i.e., α < 1.0) during the early growing period to a nearly isometric relationship (i.e., α ≈ 1.0) during the late growing period. This change possibly reflects the functional adaptation of twigs in different growing periods to meet their specific reproductive or survival needs. At different points along the altitudinal gradient, the relationships among needle mass, twig mass, and stem mass were all isometric (i.e., α ≈ 1.0). Moreover, significant differences were found in scaling constants (log β) along the altitudinal gradient, such that species had a smaller stem biomass but a relatively larger needle mass at low altitude. In addition, the scaling exponents remained numerically invariant among all three altitudes, with a common slope of 0.8, suggesting that needle area failed to keep pace with the increasing needle mass at different altitudes. Our results indicated that the twig biomass allocation pattern was significantly influenced by altitude and growing period, which reflects the functional adaptation of twigs to meet their specific survival needs under different climatic conditions.

Research Highlights: Short-term nitrogen (N) addition did not significantly alter the effects of seasonal drought on the leaf functional traits in Machilus pauhoi Kanehira seedlings in N-rich subtropical China. Background and Objectives: Seasonal drought and N deposition are major drivers of global environmental change that affect plant growth and ecosystem function in subtropical China. However, no consensus has been reached on the interactive effects of these two drivers. Materials and Methods: We conducted a full-factorial experiment to analyze the single and combined effects of seasonal drought and short-term N addition on chemical, morphological and physiological traits of M. pauhoi seedlings. Results: Seasonal drought (40% of soil field capacity) had significant negative effects on the leaf N concentrations (LNC), phosphorus (P) concentrations (LPC), leaf thickness (LT), net photosynthetic rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (Gs), and predawn leaf water potential (ψPD), and significant positive effects on the carbon:N (C:N) ratio and specific leaf area (SLA). Short-term N addition (50 kg N·hm−2·year−1 and 100 kg N·hm−2·year−1) tended to decrease the C:N ratio and enhance leaf nutrient, growth, and photosynthetic performance because of increased LNC, LPC, LT, leaf area (LA), SLA, A, E, and ψPD; however, it only had significant effects on LT and Gs. No significant interactive effects on leaf traits were detected. Seasonal drought, short-term N addition, and their interactions had significant effects on soil properties. The soil total C (STC), nitrate N (NO3−-N) and soil total N (STN) concentrations were the main factors that affected the leaf traits. Conclusions: Seasonal drought had a stronger effect on M. pauhoi seedling leaf traits than short-term N deposition, indicating that the interaction between seasonal drought and short-term N deposition may have an additive effecton M. pauhoi seedling growth in N-rich subtropical China.

Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves are extensively used in field and laboratory research to evaluate the photon-use efficiency of plants. However, most existing models for PI curves focus on the relationship between the photosynthetic rate (Pn) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and do not take account of the influence of environmental factors on the curve. In the present study, we used a new non-competitive inhibited Michaelis-Menten model (NIMM) to predict the co-variation of Pn, PAR, and the relative pollution index (I). We then evaluated the model with published data and our own experimental data. The results indicate that the Pn of plants decreased with increasing I in the environment and, as predicted, were all fitted well by the NIMM model. Therefore, our model provides a robust basis to evaluate and understand the influence of environmental pollution on plant photosynthesis.
